I remember having a Dreamcast as a child. Unfortunately my father sold it when it was discontinued. After that we had an Xbox and PS2. But I bought my own Dreamcast in 2009 and it was my first retro console in my collection. It still feels special to me. Even today I remember the day my father told me that Sega gave up. I was incredibly sad even though I didn't know any Sega console before the Dreamcast. Sega consoles became the first consoles in my console collection. After the Dreamcast I bought a Saturn, then a Mega Drive with a 32x and Sega CD, after that the Master System and last year an SG-1000. I just realized that I experienced Sega's history backwards... I think that the Dreamcast made me a retro gamer. It isn't my most played console but it influenced me the most.

The Dreamcast was my favourite console and Skies of Arcadia my favourite game.
All my Sega consoles and my Gamecube were left behind in the UK when I moved to Rome, but now I use emulators.
There's also an HD graphics pack for Skies that can be used through the emulator ReDream and the characters look like modern anime now.

Loved the Dreamcast. Think my brother owned one originally and sold it. I remember owning one of my own after that as I loved Sega Rally, must have part exchanged my Saturn (which explains what happened to that! Lol). I’m assuming I part ex’d my Dreamcast for an N64, not sure what happened to that one but I bought a PS2 after that from my brother and an Xbox 360 new after that.

Hmm... at least with the US pricing, I don't think the Dreamcast is the move for a new collector. Games are not only hard to find in the wild now, but also generally stupid expensive. I've been collecting since the early 00s with this one so I'm doing well, about 40 good titles and maybe about a dozen consoles? I even built up my original DC with new/upgraded everything except the motherboard. It's a gdemu unit now since the gdrom finally shit the bed. I had one or two swap candidates before that, but I figured my first DC was the best one to use.

One of the biggest gaming travesties was how many of us ignored the Dreamcast near launch because Sony were already doing spoilers. so we waited thinking we needed to choose a specific brand or loyalty was important. 🤦🏻 Wish I'd dived in and enjoyed it when it was current.

You know your stuff and you have great taste. For such a long form, almost continuous video you only have a few objective mistakes. The one worth correcting is regarding Sega Rally 2. You mention it only has a few tracks and it does in the arcade (4 tracks) like most arcade racers but, while usually Sega home ports of their arcade games were sadly quite barebones (see VF3, FV2, etc.) Sega Rally 2 makes the difference in that.
3 of the 4 tracks in the arcade (all except Riviera, the final track) were converted to track types/themes with 3 courses each and a 5th and 6th environment with their own 3 tracks each were added for a total of 16. The new 10 year championship mode takes you through all of them so it has quite good longevity (though all the tracks are open from the start for time attack practices).
It's not the greatest technically but makes up for that with content. If you can't stand the uneven framerate there's a cheat code that locks it to 30fps so that it's stable 99% of the time (it still dips below occasionally but it's night and day compared to the constant abrupt switches from 60 fps to 30 or less). That's different to the 60fps cheat code that massively degrades the visuals yet is still very uneven and can't hold the 60fps.
I just want to add that when you buy a Dreamcast you have to be warry of the state of the GD rom drive as it might seem fine but be degraded so that certain games will randomly reboot or so that it causes loading delays which affect the fluidity of gameplay. You can test if all in order by checking out things like the intro of Dead or Alive 2 where the transitions will pause and falter and the music track will be desynced.
Similarly if you intend to mod it with a more convenient GD rom drive replacement you must be sure the one you go for doesn't cause similar loading issues, I've seen videos of games like Crazy Taxi with constant stuttering due to such a device as that game streams data constantly too.

I forgot to mention the Sega Rally 2 10 year championship mode also has different weather and time of day conditons for the courses so that further enhances the variety on offer. In the time attack mode only vanilla default versions are selectable. So yeah, it's the one arcade port Sega kinda went all out with offering additional content over the coin op, even if it's a bit technically challenged.

The Dreamcast is a great console, it’s has games that look the best of the generation and has some great games. But I wouldn’t recommend it as a system to collect for unless you already had many others. The problem with it is that it has a small library and many of its games are expensive, especially anything that didn’t end up ported at a later date, given a lot of its best games can be found elsewhere, say for instance shenmue, crazy taxi etc. To get it to display better graphics in 480p you need to use VGA, which is also a hassle. If I was to choose a console of that generation to be a first to collect for, I would choose the PS2, massive library and affordable games. If I was to choose a first retro console to collect for, I think for retro the 16 bit reigns supreme and would choose the mega drive, closely followed by the snes which is more expensive to collect for, to me the 16 bit era is the sweet spot of retro gaming, pixelated graphics, no 3d and super playable games. Going back to Dreamcast, I think it’s really worth modding to house a SD card as then you can play the likes of cannon spike without remortgaging the house and still on original hardware.

    • @Lydgendary
      @Lydgendary  Год назад +1

PS2 is a great shout for first console. I know a lot of people don't really think of the PS2 as retro though (which I would argue it is). I suspect most people start off with playstation or definitely grew up with one and have one in their parents loft somewhere still. Dreamcast for me is something different and definitely what got me into Sega, Saturn is even less accessible so I think it's still good for a start especially if you don't want to dive straight into 16bit gaming

I played it 2 years into the PS1 launch and didn't find any need to give it up, the Saturn was also ridiculously expensive.

I remember being in awe at the graphics, and the excitement of playing my hero hedgehog in 3D for the first time.

Have two Dreamcast, both modified with USB GD-ROM drive and more silent fan, other has also DC HDMI mod that gives absolutely amazing pic for projector. Always liked both Power Stone games,Soul Calibur, Rez, racing games like Sega Rally, Crazy Taxi games, Daytona USA etc. Just love those arcade conversions. Soul Calibur and Crazy Taxi conversions actually better than Arcade. It’s just a shame that Dreamcast life was so short after Sony released PS2. It’s one of best and underrated retro consoles ever and absolutely love it❤

A word of warning from somebody who's owned a Dreamcast from day one- they are not built to last. Learn how to repair them or find a place that can. Fantastic fighting game library though and Skies of Arcadia!

Dang she's pretty! Wonder what she sounds like not speaking the queen's English. Wonder what she'd sound like with American English.
Anyway. Dreamcast was awesome. PAL territory got stuffed on boxart and such. American Dreamcast packaging and art always looks really good and doesn't have the PEGI rating system stamps on it that's an eye sore. The back of the cases are annoying too as they're in multiple languages. Today's games are similar though, having both Spanish and English that's annoying..... Unless you buy it and it came from Canada. Looks the same and you almost wouldn't know, except it's in English, Spanish, and French. Yuck......
Whew, pretty girl, smile a lot! It's a pretty smile, dang!

This is my first time watching the channel and I loved this video. I thoroughly enjoyed your perspective on the console, I'm in the good ol USA and of course, own a Dreamcast and I am continuing to expand my library. It was such a great system with so many absolutely fantastic games and as you stated you can get a lot of them for a very reasonable price. I'm really looking forward to enjoying more of your content. Thank you so much for the work you put in to make this video, it was awesome.

Dreamcast is one of the best machines to emulate. Be it on a PC or just one of these retro Linux/Android handhelds. I have a Dreamcast and all the games but I just emulate these days.

Great video! It's cool that indie developers are making games for it. Got a Dreamcast recently after always wanting one as a kid. It's a bit loud and the games are expensive, but the DC wins alot of points for being creative. Between the VMU and it's early internet support, it definitely took some swings. I just have Sonic Adventure now but I hope to build a DC collection slowly

The problem with SD card is you will lose value of your Dreamcast as it’s not gone be original anymore those consoles will be worth a lot of money there isn’t that many around fully functional and if there are any they most Japanese version.

It would have been cool if you showed a little bit of gameplay while talking about the games, just to get an impression of what the games are like to play. 😇 Also it makes the video a bitt more interesting to watch with gameplay b-roll. 😉 Otherwise, GREAT and informative video! 🥰

The Battery isn't empty per se, it lost its charging capacity. It gets recharged when you use your console so you have to replace it with a rechargeable coin cell as well, or you risk a blowing up battery in the long run.

Great video 👏 I never owned a Dreamcast growing up so had to settle with playing at a friends house. I always loved the controllers and the VMU. It's number one on my list of consoles to buy now (I'd better start saving 😅)
