  • This is my first video of this kind in which I put two nibs to the test and grade them in 10 different categories in order to get a score of 100 points. This system needs a lot of adjustments in order to become a reliable grading system for the writing experience with a nib and I would like to have your feedback on how things are showcased in this video - I would love to make changes and im open to hear your feedback. We have the famous Leonardo Officina Italiana 14k Gold Elastic Fine nib VS the popular Pilot FA flex nib, competing for a score of 100 points.

    Interesting approach. Two main challenges, many criteria are very subjective, one may like a simple nib. Second, nibs have a lot of variation. I have many B Jowo nibs, no 2 are the same. This is a great starting place, looking forward to seeing how you evolve your review of nibs.

      🙌🏻 thank you for your feedback - we can only be in one of these two : all nibs are the same / or all nibs are individually different - I tried my approach to showcase what can be normally expected from a nib in comparison to another one - most likely these two competing for a spot in ones collection when looking for some flex🙌🏻😁 for sure we will try to improve the method and make it more reliable

    Looking forward to seeing more Emy scores! :) It's an interesting challenge as different needs and tastes might dictate different scoring systems. It would be interesting and fun to have as a reference an example of a nib that would earn a 10 in each of your categories (presumably not the same nib, of course). So that you could imagine a hypothetical perfect nib that would have the smoothness of nib X and the elasticity of nib Y with the fun factor of nib Z ..... Have fun with this!

      Definitely! I still need to change a few things and maybe have a more scientific base scoring system, it is still a work in progress but with every nib / it will get more consistent and that is exactly what im after :D it is not a perfect system and it won't be - but lets make it as helpful as we can

    I came here because I am considering a Pilot Custom 823 with an FA nib. I've heard the 823 with the FA nib and an ebonite feed really opens this pen up which could help with the hard starts and rail roading that you mentioned.

    I think you should have specified that you are testing the #10 FA nib. I don't have any experiences with that particular nib but from the research I've done, the #15 FA nib is completely different. I have the #15 FA nib and I don't have issues with railroading with the stock feed.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      Yes and no, the only nib that is available on 912Heritage is the size 10 - and I did owned a size 15 FA and it was problematic and tricky just like the nr 10 that I have now. They are nice nibs that really flex dont get me wrong, but all that performance comes with a cost - they are very sensitive to all sorts of things like paper, speed of flexing, ink, the angle of grip, rotation of grip, oils from the hand and the list goes on. If your size 15FA doesnt railroad maybe is the fact that you have a slower movement in your handwriting, or maybe you dont push it too hard - I took mine in this video to 98% of its maximum capacity both speed and flex

    I could not understand how smoothness and feedback are two different parameters, this may need some explanation.
    After that, the temptation to sum up all the different parameters to a single number on a linear scale is a bit forced, as it means nothing. the better way is to break the parameters maybe to 2-3 groups and give them at least a 2D chart, so any person looking for a "score" of a pen could also see if it is in the style and type he is looking for, so a graph like that may have 4 quadrants (just an example) from cheap hard nibs to expensive and soft. not all people will look at the same quadrant for their dream pen. I have hard and soft nibs and I love them for different uses and at different times.
    Another idea: at least some of these categories can be marked on a scale of not 0-10 but instead maybe -5 to 5, for instance hard to soft. some really love the hard, sharp Japanese EF posting nibs and others would like a wet noodle, but most look for something in the middle. Here some will look for the ultimate 5 or the ultimate -5 and most will be very content with something closer to 0.
    So this goes back to my original point: these numbers are not all on a summable scale, you have a score system that has biassed, especially if you just end up summing up all the parameters, unweighted, to one scalar. desk pens, pocket pens, writing pens, Journaling pens, drawing pens, calligraphy pens, they cannot all be measured on the same parameters and a single scale. (I invite also @chrisrap52 to weigh in :)

      I'd second that, plus more -- is springy good and mushy bad, or is it the other way around? In any case, definitely not subject to addition to "fun factor" (what?). My suggestion would be to limit the factors to at least semi-objective (so "feedback" in, "fun factor" out) and then spend some time discussing what is a better use case for A vs B. As in "if you're in search of a modern flex nib, but don't want to spend much, FA is for you. on the other hand if you're after one pen that has it all, FA might not be the right choice (small cartridge capacity for this nib, hard starts, etc.), whilst Leonardo offers a more well rounded alternative with better color selection." Finally, there should not be a fp video without writing samples, and figure-eights don't count! On the positive side, this is the type of content the world needs, as opposed to endless unpacking. Go Emy!

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 года назад

      :D I can understand better now some aspects and for sure I will change a few things - considering we are talking about 2 flex nibs which are similar in what they are intended to deliver as a writing experience I wanted to have a round up on score. We need to find a proper scoring field to be applied to all sort of nibs not only to similar nibs (flex in this case). I dont intend to score desk pens/writing pens/journaling pens or drawing pens - only nibs.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 года назад

      Hey outpost12341 - not necessarily but the therm mushy is more of a description that implies a really soft nib that can be easy bend if you apply too much pressure and also the spring back is not that quick so in essence this is a nib that comes with these particularities that are not probably the best if you try flex nibs for the very first time or intend to use them in not a sensitive matter and always looking to preserve them and not over flex them. Fun factor is and will be a factor in my way of appreciating a nib because having a flex nib/elastic (called like this) - stiff as a nail / it not fun at all - this is just one example that can summarise this and also I will be explaining always why I score a nib to be fun or less fun. Figure-eights :)) ... love them or hate them :D pens are fun and unpacking them is just the first step of a endless fun journey, so yes, im all up for writing samples

    • @Seefood73
      @Seefood73 2 года назад +1

      @@pen.venture ahh, well, if we are only grading the nib, I would give extra score to the fact the Leonardo can be bought as a nib using and installed in other pens as well. I would get rid of subjective categories like "fun" and stick to measurable numbers, like how many grams of pressure before the tines begin to split, how many grams is the maximum pressure you dare use before the tines spring, what is the ratio between widest and narrowest lines, etc. (I only made one flex nibs video on my channel and those were the items I focused on, but that was only a shallow look at that one aspect.)

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 года назад +4

      Yes we can do that - from my experience the steel EF elastic has more line variation but is less wet and more prone to be a exotic nib while the elastic F steel is more prone to be a great overall writer with less line variation and more wetness

  • @PenFriends
    @PenFriends Год назад +1

    I think the premise of this test is excellent. But a few considerations
    1 whilst the design of the nib maybe important for overall aesthetics, I feel for this test it’s not needed.
    2 others have mentioned this, so I won’t lament. The pilot feed is pretty useless… so when you get your FNF feed, it would be interesting to see this test again.
    3 the jowo elastic gold nibs I’ve found to not to my taste, especially with SnapBack and keeping up to speed. Yes I’ve had the Leonardo with ebonite feed and wasn’t impressed.
    4 I like the idea of the metrics, but because of the elasticity test it seems to skew the overall figures.
    Lastly I look forward to seeing Leonardo making a true flex nib in the future. But , this to me is just an expressional nib 😢 and in terms of flexing and SnapBack, from my perspective it pails to that of the FA.

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  Год назад

      :D it needs some adjustments these metrics and all, but I think I will have another video soon and will dial in some things :D
      1 - partly agreeing with you, since its personal taste and maybe something for me is likeable and for some not, but if we have two nibs that have cut outs and look similar, we can have a sort of grading system for the visual looks of it :D
      2 - for sure... its coming, along with some housings for the conid kingsize in order to retrofit some exotic nibs :D
      3 - hmmm they are exactly what they say, elastic and not flex :D I like them because they are sort of best of both worlds, considering 99% of us will never reach the level of calligraphy that these nibs cant cope :D (you know what I mean)
      4 - hmmmm it can be improved - ill work on my method
      When you buy something as nice and flexy as a pilot FA, and experience skipping that drives you mad, I would not say even close that is pails in comparison to the Leonardo nib, but its just personal experience, I do pray to God that ebonite feeder with 3 ink channels will make it better and not brake the capillary action every 2 or 3 seconds when im writing - lets see :D

  • @andrewlensky632
    @andrewlensky632 2 года назад +1

    A strange test: foexible possibilities are higher, but score is lower, below we can see that there are no rails on the flexible level and snap back test too. With normal writing is also a low score. Maybe you got some low-quality sample?

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 года назад

      That can be too - but as far as I know all Pilot FA nibs are tricky when it comes to certain papers/inks and very very sensitive to railroad

    • @andrewlensky632
      @andrewlensky632 2 года назад

      @@pen.venture Thanks for comment. I'm for honesty: you can't compare Elastic with Flexibility. Pilot FA is one of the best (if not exactly) among modern factory nibs. Maybe the filling system is not so ideal, but it can be changed to ebonite one. Elastic is reasonable to compare with SF nib, Conklin Omniflex, Stipula Flex or others from the same level.
      It looks like a comparison between a sportscar and towncar, despite the fact that the towncar is also in coupe design, and sportscar loses))

    • @pen.venture
      @pen.venture  2 года назад

      Andrew … it is the requested comparison ar least 5 to 6 times i got this request, this is what the majority asked and this is what the majority gets. I give all my respect to the FA with its capabilities but half of the time skips and railroads in my usual flexing style and it is very strange with the way it is filled with ink the filling system is not ideal + in order to make it more enjoyable in writing I have to spend 60 70usd on a extra ebonite feeder that one needs to install itself, that makes on my opinion the FA not the best pen, maybe the best half of the pen because the other half you need to spend more and then to assembly it

    • @andrewlensky632
      @andrewlensky632 2 года назад +1

      @@pen.venture Well, yes, I do not deny that there are problems, by the way, the ebonite feed costs 25, if I am not mistaken. And inks also have matter for railroads, with Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black I have no problems with the rails even on the basic feed. One more point: the name of the review is Elastic vs FA, not system vs system or pen vs pen. So the FA nib(10) is really the best of modern flexibly factory nibs.
      ps: As for the comparison: elastic is not a flexible nib, tis is a soft one, that's why there is no rail, because there is nowhere for them to get hold of. The same analogy with cars: Smart Sport will not shake at a speed of 300 km/h, like, say, McLaren, because it is simply unable to have such a speed.
      pss: by the way, the assembly feed is not hard on Pilot Custom))
