This is the most wonderful thing ever made. Despite the appearance they are very durable only a cat can tear these. The only problem that I had was the Velcro failing. I recommend just sewing all the velcro points at their optimal velcro point.
how the hell can anybody be sad wearing this? the happy suit looks the crème de la crème of the softie suit. every detail looks well thought out with soldiers and hard use in mind. very very nice kit ken. thanks for a good all round review.
The Army equivalent is the Gen III ECWCS Level 7 Primaloft top and bottom, otherwise known as the "Marshmellow Suit" in Sage Green. The Grunt term for the full ECWCS system is the "7 Layer Burrito" kit. Typical layering pattern is the China Silk long johns, then Waffle Suit layer, then the Marshmellow suit, and finally the GoreTex shells. Made for REALLY arctic conditions. You can find the Marshmellow top or bottom for about $100 per component on average from surplus sources such as Cheaper Than Dirt, and isn't too rare due to the last 13 years of RFI's (Rapid Fielding Initiative issues) dishing them out in epic quantities. We didn't get the sweet booties or gloves though. The old "Polar Bear" black fleece overalls are super cheap, but the top is as well loved as a grunts Woobie, and Joes don't part with the classic black fleece easily, or the original woodland Gen I gore-tex jacket w/ liner. When outprocessing at CIF, they generally say it "Got lost in the field" and take the FLIPL charge. Worth every penny.
are these in the video made out of a rip stop material or not, I bought this FR Extreme Cold Weather Parka & Trousers FR ECWCS L7 (NON Military Issue) Coyote Tan (Large Long) www.amazon.com/dp/B01HOUVKQ6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4dJOyb30N7DAX and it appears to be nearly the same item. I'm trying to verify its authenticity. the item I bought is not rip stop like I was expecting and it's not the same material as the army/air force 5 piece modular sleep system like I was expecting. however this could be explained by it being the fire resistant variant. it seems to be of solid construction, and even has "IDEAL" zippers with the ADS logo on them.
Tim these are not made with rip stop material. From looking at the link you posted those are not military contracted, but are made just like the ones for the military. The material should be a bit different than the MMSS in order for it to be more durable since you will be wearing it. The tags are different for sure, but otherwise they are the exact same construction as the military issue happy suits that I have. You got a really good deal on the set! Hope this helps? Ken
"...material behind zipper so it doesn't snag when you zip it up..." that's a wind flap, to keep wind from blowing through the zipper, usually one inside, one out. If you have a leather jacket made, they sometimes charge you extra to install a wind flap. I'm noticing, left hip pocket zipper zips closed, bottom to top, right zipper zips closed top to bottom. Hmmm.
With the sizing on the jacket would you say it's best to go one size down or two? I'm a big guy 6'6 280lbs and in normal jackets I wear about a 3x. I can fit into 2x's but they're just a hair too tight so I go with 3x but with this what would you say would probably be best? How about the pants too? I wear size 14 boots, would their booties fit my feet?
Hi kjumper1, cool video and great gear too mate, do you have this in size LARGE or X-LARGE (even better) or do you know a place that I can get one, I live in the UK, very cold most of the year, tanks mate.
Yes these suits do come in larger sizes. The only place that I am aware of to buy these suits direct is at the following: www.wildthingsgear.com/collections/mission-msn/products/gen-iii-level-vii-parka?variant=1527475075 You can also look on Ebay as well, but the cost of shipping may be kinda expensive. Ken
+R.A.S. Tactical I retired from the Marines and I live just outside the base so lots of gear available to me plus what I had acquired while I was in. Ken
+Advanced Camper Look on Ebay. The prices will vary by seller, but it's better than buying from the manufacturer. With them you are looking at well over $600. Ken
