    I never saw these when I was in the USMC 1987-91 even in our cold weather training in Alaska we were issued crap gear. These look pretty sweet definitely the military has come a long way.

      These days I think the only time they're issued is for bridgeport, mountain warfare training. When I went through it in 2018, they didn't issue them until 20 dudes got hypothermia and several nearly died. We still weren't able to use them a whole lot but when we did, it was amazing. The very moment you put it on, instant warmth.

      I've slept outside for 3 years straight in Walmart gear and other budget options. It sucked but it worked.

      @@axelasander9659 as a teenager my dad and I would go backpacking. We never had the high-speed gear, I wore wool pants from goodwill because we couldn't afford the expensive synthetics, slept in bargain sleeping bags. Yes, it can be done is it as comfy and nice as a 0* bag, that really is a 0* bag? Heck no, but it worked. I have some of my most vivid memories shivering in the mountains waiting for morning to come. Lol.

    Used similar booties made by baffin through a full winter in the Utah high desert. They were the bomb but way to hot for sleeping with them on in a -30 bag. And they fit perfect into my insulated Neos overboots for running around camp at night

    We called them marshmallow suits in the army. Although, I never got issued the booties 😤. But man, I'm pretty sure I maxed out the performance of it in the Afghan mountains lol, it kept me alive though.

      Nobody in the Army got booties. So jealous! But in general yeah the marshmallow suit is a life saver. Very comfortably warm in freezing temps.

    you can pick these up fairly cheap on ebay in the sage green color that the army and air force used

      Your talking about the Level 7 of the PCU system for anyone searching for it. They are a bit different because different manufacturers made the different level throughout the years. I got a level7 Wildthings fit perfect then got a level 7 Halys (same exact thing) way too big.

    Yup you want layers when in the cold, my bro and I have some russian Gorkas and they work great here in Northern Idaho, sprayed some water repellent on them and made them even better.

    ECWCS level 7 is super warm too, and a little bit cheaper if you can't afford the wild things
    gotten through a lot of -10 winters with them and they cut the wind chill right out

    PERFECT!!! well almost. Got it booked marked, cause its a little pricey, but worth it. So when I get some funds saved, might buy a piece at the time. Also wished it came in more colors, and maybe some cam patterns would be nice. Great review Kit. Keep up the good work. This is definitely on my radar.

    For this usecase I can recommend the atom sv from Arc’teryx. Its so nicely breathable but super light and fairly water resistant

    I've owned some wild things stuff over the decades - top quality! I wonder how they compare to the N-3B coat and F-1B pants. I have Vietnam era coat made with wool insulation (better than later issued stuff) and it's the warmest thing I have ever worn. Need to get the pants.

    Have you ever tried throwing a couple of hand warmers in your damp boots overnight to help dry them out? A friend of mine would put each boot in an ex large freezer bag with the warmers inside the boots. I’ve never tried that.
    Cold feet no bueno. 👍🏼

    With the boots, are they something that you actually walk around in? Use them as a boot liners? over the boot? or take your boots off and put the happy boots over socks only? im trying to get an idea of how they are used. Thanks

    I hike in all seasons. I don't have any of that overly expensive junk. Dress in layers. The temp changes constantly and if you go from a heavy jacket straight to a t-shirt, you will die. If you wear multiple layers then you can slowly shed or add layers throughout the day to keep your body temp more evenly regulated. Waiting till you get wet will give you hypothermia.

    big oof, $800 usd for a lightweight shell some 330 cordura and a measly 1.2lbs of primaloft. thats not even enough primaloft to keep you warm in 30f in a primaloft quilt. No thanks, much better gear for cheaper out there.
