I love this kind of stuff.Been a Holden man since the day I got my license and still are to this day. Currently driving a Rodeo crew cab ( work vehicle) and have a VS Spack Ute for the weekend. Beautiful vehicles you have there 👍🏾🇦🇺
Brings back memories I purchased new LC GTR Burgundy maroon $2850 registered on road stunning car, back in 2005 i was manufacturing reproduction LJ tripple carbi linkage sets sold more than a 100 sets these were very popular.
Gday mate, Ford fella here. My first ever (fast car ride) was in 1980 in my cousin’s LJ GTR XU1. I was 9 at that time and I still have vivid memories of how fast he had that thing going! 14 flat was pretty respectable in the day for a six and it was in great condition! Beautiful work sir Post edit! Just got to the 6:40 odd mark… that’s the colour!!! More metallic from memory 👍
I have the brother of your car 71 GTR XU1 that has been sitting in my shed since 1999. Mine is Yellow Dolly and I bought it from the original owner in 1995. I paid $5000 and it is still stock standard (but it looks a bit sad now). People say I should restore it but I kind of like it as old time capsule. 78,000miles
Just do brakes and tyres and wash it. I personally believe that left in original state makes them more valuable, my mate had same colour XU1 as yours not Bathurst had Opel gearbox had a bigger cam put in by previous owner but back then late 70s early 80s modifying cars was standard procedure so getting one original is very rare
Being such a low k car, i'll take the unrestored, but if the choice was between an unrestored XU1 that looked liked it completed a variety bash rally vs restored, i'll take restored every day of the week. Either way, they're both beautiful examples. Love your videos and the fact you keep these toranas alive mate 👍
I wouldn't restore it, like you say it's only been made like that once. You start doing stuff to it and suddenly it's not what it was... Great videos by the way, knowledge and information passes on is fantastic 👏👌👍
Leave it for sure. For me most resto paint jobs are just way way better then factory and takeaway from the car, you have done a nice job on that one man.
Two great examples right there! DONT TOUCH the original, it should be in a museum, it’s an incredibly rare find & your are lucky man but to be fair you deserve all that luck. Thanks for showing the difference between the state of origin differences. Loved the video👍
My Lime green (Lina mint) 1970 LC X-U1 didn't have twin exhaust muffler and it had a rattly opel gearbox and the disc's on the front kept warping, The dress rims where about $40 each and were a prized item to be stolen. I used to keep them in the boot. You had to be careful where you parked due to thief. I use to take the rotor button out when parking in the city. STILL LOVED THAT CAR Cost $3150 brand new.Thinking back the 1st X-U1 1970 colours were Yellow Dolly-Plum Dinger-Lina Mint- Rally Red. The 1971 LC X-U1 had more colours Keep It Original.
Yep ~ as can be seen above on my cements ~ fittings Bathurst mags solved the warping issue and the stolen chrome bands ~ I fitted a under dash kill switch and had a steering lock ~ The front quarter windows were a breeze unlatch ~ even more hazardous ~
I had a 1971 homologated (Bathurst) LC XU1 back in 1976/7, sold it to a guy in Devonport Tassie. It was gold, a particular gold (not Cameo) colour that I had never seen before on a Torana.
Such gorgeous little cars, my first car in the late 90's was a one owner LC sedan with a 2600 and 65000 miles from factory I bought from my grandfather and have regretted selling since 2000. The LC/LJ had their quirks, but they always felt so comfortable and easy to drive, no wonder they were such a good car for both circuit racing and rallying.
Unrestored is more desirable, in this case. It's extremely hard to find car that survived the 1980's without getting the Mad Max treatment. My uncle had a HT GTS Monaro with a factory 350 engine and 4 speed gearbox. He went ape shit in the 1980's and spent a fortune to have the guards pumped and flared out to the max. He also had a pop up sunroof fitted, had a letterbox scoop, Premier twin headlights, a purple velvet interior with yellow lightning blot inserts. As a kid I thought it was really cool, but I now I realize he spent a fortune to molest the car and the poor bastard who bought it off him spent a fortune trying to bring it back to original.
Both nice cars but I would have unrestored for me & whats the difference between gearboxes I heard you say something but didn't quite catch it & what sort of price were the Bathurst cars back in the day another great video as usual
These were the favorite of the postcard bandit , he had a beige Torana S LC that he made into a LJ XU1 Tribute 192 red torquer head tripple webbers pulled wheelstands im talking maybe 2" painted red/orange like SS HQ all his mates from around Belmont WA had them early 80s motor was worked to the hilt
For some reason I always preferred the LC over the LJ, it was one of my favourite cars growing up. I remember one of dad's friends buying a purple XA GT fastback and then his son came home in a gunmetal LC XU1.. Although they're both awesome, I'll have the unrestored one please❤
Okay so I’m going to be 100% honest with you. I’m so jealous of you 😂 I’m just in awe 😩 So many legendary Aussie cars under the same roof. Also, unrestored would be my choice if I was to restrict the amount of time it spent on the road. Restored if I was to have unlimited road use. Cheers 🍻🍻🍻🇦🇺
I'd take the unrestored any day, it's only original once. Both are very nice. My little brother has an LC with a twin turbo Maserati in it, at least it did, was even on the cover of Street Machine July/Aug 95, had a 327 back then.
Certainly want both lol. Personally I'd take the restored over unrestored .HOWEVER in my mind the unrestored is more valuable sentimentaly and I'd like to use such a iconic vehicle so the restored ultimately is a win for me
Wow what a find! ...... You have a very nice collection Absolutely leave the original car as is. You could restore to improve, however the value is that it is in an unmolested state.
Would love to have survivor like that but would be afraid to drive it probably go with factory restored so it can be driven without guilt. Not keen on some of the reproduction parts dont quite look right but understand why people fit them
Nice cars but having driven them often back in the day I would personally prefer my HK 327. The Torana XU-1 was not as easy to live with to my mind. A mate had one and had the opposite view so it depends. These days I would take a Falcon GTHO any Phase will do. 4 doors man. Back in 1980 you couldn't give them away. These days they are GOLD. Amazing.
Absolutely I sold mine for $1500 in 1986! It had rust at the base of the windscreen both L&R! ~ and panel beater reckoned it was structural which I NOW know was BS! And yeah two door ~ what a bitch to "go parking in " ~ I think my Cooper S was much better for parking on moon lite nights or nay other !
To restore or to maintain ~ I owned a LC XU-1 ~ Very late production ~ in fact one of the last LC. ( I always intended but never got to contact GMH and talk exact details ~ No pooters then eh.) I luved the car ~ would have kept the car BUT ~ I think that restoration of body and paint is truly the big issue ~ and this is where mine failed despite regular "fish oiling" of the body" in a seaside environment! I modified the be jeez out of it but endeavoured to maintains stock appearance ~ It was that same similar colour you showed at the end of your vid. Purple/ black. Was that a stock colour? I assume it was custom as I bought it from a panel beater in Canberra ! That lead to some serious issues as the paint deteriorated after 3 years ?! I had to have the front rotors machined every six months! As they would warp. Only after I replaced the stock rims & fitted ‘Bathurst’ mags did this cease! I partially “restored” the car ~ had the engine rebuilt at approx 50K miles. Took it out to 190 and a modified ‘Superflow’ head. Stock carbies rebuilt. Fitted a 4 core radiator. Stock 3.08 diff. We rebuilt the gearbox ( but it then jumped out of second gear violently. We replaced the second gear cluster.) I fitted full harness and a Hopkirk seat ~ Modified wiring and lighting significantly ~ Race Torsion bars front and rear. Plus an electric cooling fan ~ I drove the car the way it was designed and at top speed the whole car Hummed ~ I NEVER took risks ~ I NEVER put others at risk ~ I was NEVER fined ~ (one speeding fine in 1972 in my 186S HR touring pack) ~ I NEVER had an accident ~ The tail shaft internal packing came adrift and it was rebuilt and the packing removed. (Despite this rebuild the front uni exploded on me several years later but miraculously it held together as I was at full throttle at the time ~ “Just blowing out the cobwebs.” Someone up there was looking after me!) But it fractured the main front drive bearing in the gearbox + broke the bell housing ~ could not find an original housing ~ Took months to sort the car ! Finally rust set in on the base of the windscreen left and right ~ I talked to local panel beater and he simply said it was structural and get rid of the car not worth it ~ (OMG isn’t hindsight amazing ~) I sold the car for ~ wait for it ~ $1500 ~ ( I later friended a bloke and his wife in Sydney when I got back into motorcycles and he too sold his LJ XU-1 for the same price with the exact same issue ~ NOW I know differently ~ ) So does one restore or maintain~ guess I for one did the later ~ but regret EVER parting with the car ~ Would love to know what happened to it ~ it did go back to Canberra approx 1986 ~ It was painted SILVER then ~ sacrilege !
Most definitely leave it, most were modified by later owners back in the late 70s early 80s had a few mates who had them over the years and they all altered them none were bathurst though as far as we knew but that wouldnt have stopped them from putting bigger cams on them changing carbies extractors etc, so to have an original unmolested one to me makes it even more rare, and more useable as you dont have to treat it like its made of glass so much as you would a restored one after paying all that extra money, i think a collector would want the one thats untouched
there great cas in there own right , what shits me about them is IMO its a cortina/centura competitor not a falcon/kingswood/valiant rival , all articles have the xu1 (160hp triple stromberg 3ltr) as the competitor to the charger (302hp triple webber 4.3ltr) triple carbed 6 is the only comparable link , it like comparing a hsv and hyundai getz because they both have fuel injection
It’s very hard to see which is which …both in exceptional condition ….down to the fine detail depends on the condition of the original…and the quality of the restoration of the other…but either would do me …
so very jealous im older guy 61 grew up with all these cars had a mate that owned the LJ Bathurst Torana 202 with triple side draft Webbers....my first car was a HT Bathurst Monaro 350 which was pinched ...if i had my choice wouldn't take the Torana's would pick the xw xy gt falcons out of them all .... i have to say your one greedy man owning all of those Ausie muscle. Cars...but good luck to you
i dont know about unrestored spot welded front end. all the fronts of these cars have hidden issues and you car see it when the front panels come off as it has been more than 50 years and holden had no paint under alot of places.
Love your videos old son i had a 73 LJ years ago it was silver but real colour was purple it had a targa sun roof apparently their were only 200 ever made for the general managers of holden i sold it for 10k in 2010 kick my self these days i wont go into the VK whore or the LH slur 😔
LX RTS Hatchback SS ~ I reckon the LX was the best Torana profile of them all. My boss had a 253 SS an we would park my XU-1 and his SS hatch side * side at the shop just to show off ~ I saw Brocky race his LX's at Bathurst ~ now that was BEWTIFUL car ~
When you restore them why don't you use acrylic to give it that authenticity? I had an LJ Xu1 in similar color. Fun cars. Keep it original. I wouldn't touch it.
I’ll have a low mileage unrestored one any day of the week. You can never restore them like factory using todays reproduction parts. Even the reproduction vinyl is crap Actually ck XU1’s raced the XY’s not the XW’s
Geeze mate, if you're going to mouth off to a guy that restores the originals, get your information right, try starting by trying to learn how to use the internet. Go google "LC GTR-XU1, it doesn't take long to find out you're completely WRONG....
LC X-U1 was the original Model 1970-1971 . LJ X-U1 1972-1973. (the GTR was a cheaper version in the LC range with a 161 motor twin carby with stripes and no ducktail)
@@kymsomerville9024 Spot on the money ~ and I have heard it said now the LC XU-1 increasingly more desirable because of that 186 Block and steel crank ~ ( which I believe started in the 179 engine ?) I worked in the auto electrical trade for many years and in Canberra I heard of SEVEN instances of 202 / LJ XU-1 putting a rod out of #1 pot after a hard run and winding down. I believe it was a factory block casting issue !?
I thought that lc’s were gtr’s with the 161s or the 186 with the triple carbs and the lj’s were the gtr xu1 with the 202 and triple carbs. Shit,,,, ya learn something new every day. I’ve had a couple of weir holdens that I’ve always regretted selling. First was an ej with a factory fitted 149 red motor. Checked vic roads database and it was first registered with a 149. Next was a hq kingswood, baby blue with white roof and blue interior, 202 column auto. Very early 71. The strange thing about it was it was complianced as a hg. The tag said 7-71 hg sedan. The chassis number on the drivers side chassis rail was 2246m, and 2246m was on the compliance plate. Factory screw up. Was cool as hell tho. Next was hq statesman that was again an early 71. Body number was 498. Was probably made in the first week or 2 of hq production. I miss that car. Next weird one was a ht premier. Was a vedoro green/ white roof car. It was bodied as a 6 cylinder. It also had a full black brougham interior in it that looked far too correct for someone to have just slapped it in at a later date. The woodgrain brougham glove box lid had a premier badge on it instead of a brougham one. I pulled the badge off and there were no excess holes for the longer brougham badge. Had the brougham kick panels, courtesy lights, the steering wheel, the dash, the door trims, the lot! I cot curious at that point and started to question the 308 badges on the front guards. Another quick check with vicroads yielded me a 308h engine number for its First registration in 1970. This car I’m almost certain didn’t leave the factory like that, but was more than likely all fitted up at the dealership as something special for the dealer himself or used as an example of how you could Option up your Holden. This makes sense as in the past I’ve also seen a 1 owner hk kingswood that was a cream colour, but was a dealer fitted 307 and maroon brougham interior job. Car manufacturers and dealers certainly did some not commonly known shit back in the day
I have only ever heard of a GTR with a 161 engine and dual throat carb downdraft ~ ( and that carb was a a bad thing too ! Mine on the HR 186S was junk ~ bloody thing all but fell apart!) I have never heard of stock triple strombergs fitted other than some body tinkering ~ and the XU-1 LC had the stock ( factory modified) 186 ~ But then I know nothing!
By triple carbs, I meant the triple su’s, not triple downdraft strombergs. The only holdens that came from the factory with multiple downdraft strombergs were the hd’s with the 179 x2 which had twin downdraft strombergs, and earlier hr’s with the 186 x2 which also had the twin strommies. Later hr’s had a 186s which is the 2 barrel stromberg which also went through the hk t g series.
@@caseylittle6417 Mate I fully understand what you were saying re the triple side draft carbs. I agree the only dual down draft carbs were on the X2 (HR) single throat downdraft Stromberg carbs. Those were commonplace and nut so bad ! In fact very easy to over haul and service but had to make sure the screws firmly secured. MY HR premier 186 S with four speed had a single dual throat downdraft. I have never heard of triple dual throat downdraft in nay applications ~
No holdens ever left the factory with triple dual throat carbys. I’ve never seen any intake manifold for any inline 6 cylinder engine that’s been for a triple dual throat carb application. Triple single barrel downdrafts have been available as an aftermarket speed equipment thing for Holden 6’s for decades. I have however seen an intake manifold for a 250 crossflow that was for twin 34adm carbs. It’s Very cool bit of gear.
Torries forever. My favourite all time car, and I'm 71
I love this kind of stuff.Been a Holden man since the day I got my license and still are to this day. Currently driving a Rodeo crew cab ( work vehicle) and have a VS Spack Ute for the weekend. Beautiful vehicles you have there 👍🏾🇦🇺
Both beautiful!Unrestored when that well preserved!
Brings back memories I purchased new LC GTR Burgundy maroon $2850 registered on road stunning car, back in 2005 i was manufacturing reproduction LJ tripple carbi linkage sets sold more than a 100 sets these were very popular.
Its great to see a person that cares so much about details u are doing a great job thanks for sharing it
Gday mate, Ford fella here. My first ever (fast car ride) was in 1980 in my cousin’s LJ GTR XU1. I was 9 at that time and I still have vivid memories of how fast he had that thing going! 14 flat was pretty respectable in the day for a six and it was in great condition!

I had a Sebring Orange LC GTR, great little car, your XU1's are stunners.
I could cry. It reminds me when I had my LJ 4 door. Brilliant little car. And that Amethyst colour is sublime.
Unrestored in your condition any day what a stunner luv to own one just like that one day who knows 🎉❤
Nearly bought one of these back in the 70's

They are both great! Here in NZ our salty humidity would ensure that most cars left in the garage for 37 years would be knackered.

I owned an LC back in '72 chrome yellow. Wish I'd never sold it. 😪
To restore or to maintain ~
I owned a LC XU-1 ~ Very late production ~ in fact one of the last LC.
( I always intended but never got to contact GMH and talk exact details ~ No pooters then eh.)
I luved the car ~ would have kept the car BUT ~
I think that restoration of body and paint is truly the big issue ~ and this is where mine failed despite regular "fish oiling" of the body" in a seaside environment!

Finally rust set in on the base of the windscreen left and right ~ I talked to local panel beater and he simply said it was structural and get rid of the car not worth it ~ (OMG isn’t hindsight amazing ~) I sold the car for ~ wait for it ~ $1500 ~
( I later friended a bloke and his wife in Sydney when I got back into motorcycles and he too sold his LJ XU-1 for the same price with the exact same issue ~ NOW I know differently ~ )
So does one restore or maintain~ guess I for one did the later ~ but regret EVER parting with the car ~ Would love to know what happened to it ~ it did go back to Canberra approx 1986 ~ It was painted SILVER then ~ sacrilege !

Unrestored cars is worth a lot more money than I restored car. 💯💰
I had an XU1 not long after I got my license it was green like yours was the green a factory colour
I’d put the oil cap back on, before starting
Knew a Bloke in Canberra that the oil filler cap fell off ~ between Melbourne and Canberra on his LJ GTR ~ what a flipping mess ~
i'd take the FJ ute more my style
the original is what i'd prefer untouched
Yours is better: a perfect blend of originality and a history of use. And don’t sell it; it could only ever be a “why did I ever do that?” scenario!
Unrestored one every day, no fake epoxy paint etc.
❤
there great cas in there own right , what shits me about them is IMO its a cortina/centura competitor not a falcon/kingswood/valiant rival , all articles have the xu1 (160hp triple stromberg 3ltr) as the competitor to the charger (302hp triple webber 4.3ltr) triple carbed 6 is the only comparable link , it like comparing a hsv and hyundai getz because they both have fuel injection
Brisbane is northern Australia?
If it ain't broke don't fix it
Are the guages in the restored xu1 not yet hooked up?? Awsome cars none the less
Fuel gauge is dead so is tacho they have been repaired
@WorthyRestorations- who do you get yout trim through, your parcel shelves through, and what brand of kits do you use in the cd Strombergs please ?
It’s very hard to see which is which …both in exceptional condition ….down to the fine detail depends on the condition of the original…and the quality of the restoration of the other…but either would do me …
As is , keep it.
I take the one with matching numbers for the car as I don't want a clone car as they don't have the value as a matching numbers car
They are both matching numbers
Leave it unrestored!!🙏🏼
I would not restore the you found its worth more.but the one restored look great but Holden I would keep them that my personal preference
unrestored all day
original is always best
The colour is called Lone o ranger same as my 72 gtr 383 chev
wasnt there a tangerine color 2 ?
so very jealous im older guy 61 grew up with all these cars had a mate that owned the LJ Bathurst Torana 202 with triple side draft Webbers....my first car was a HT Bathurst Monaro 350 which was pinched ...if i had my choice wouldn't take the Torana's would pick the xw xy gt falcons out of them all .... i have to say your one greedy man owning all of those Ausie muscle. Cars...but good luck to you
MY comment is I would like to knew what is the best way to polish the car and the brand name Of The car polish
How much for the bathurst ones,i so want one..
They are not cheap
Is there some reason the Tacho wasn't working on either car ?
Wasn’t working on the restored one only was a loose connection
note, the pronunciation of Bathurst, should be 'bath ist' as opposed 'bath hurst'
i dont know about unrestored spot welded front end. all the fronts of these cars have hidden issues and you car see it when the front panels come off as it has been more than 50 years and holden had no paint under alot of places.
Love your videos old son i had a 73 LJ years ago it was silver but real colour was purple it had a targa sun roof apparently their were only 200 ever made for the general managers of holden i sold it for 10k in 2010 kick my self these days i wont go into the VK whore or the LH slur 😔
You're going to regret it if you sell it I made the same mistake and I'm still kicking myself even today I had a LX Torana hatchback SS 😢
LX RTS Hatchback SS ~ I reckon the LX was the best Torana profile of them all. My boss had a 253 SS an we would park my XU-1 and his SS hatch side * side at the shop just to show off ~
I saw Brocky race his LX's at Bathurst ~ now that was BEWTIFUL car ~
your tacho isn't working on the restored one.
When you restore them why don't you use acrylic to give it that authenticity? I had an LJ Xu1 in similar color. Fun cars. Keep it original. I wouldn't touch it.
It’s the customers choice there are benefits on both options
unrestored of course!
UN restored cos they're only ORIGINAL once
Anything that has not got two pack epoxy paint.
I’ll have a low mileage unrestored one any day of the week. You can never restore them like factory using todays reproduction parts. Even the reproduction vinyl is crap
Actually ck XU1’s raced the XY’s not the XW’s
Yeh leave it!
So this for America 🇺🇸. Miss. International purchases. In miles.
Those colours are screaming 70's so much it's making my ears bleed.
Keep it unrestored
Yep leave it.
Tough call on special decision. First world problems. Lol.
Yes slightly jealous. ....
You're only a virgin once....
Do not restore it, it's only original once as they say.

LC was just a GTR. The GTR XU1 is an LJ. 1972. LJ won Bathurst. LC was crappy. I bought a VL instead of an LJ.
You may want to check your facts
Geeze mate, if you're going to mouth off to a guy that restores the originals, get your information right, try starting by trying to learn how to use the internet. Go google "LC GTR-XU1, it doesn't take long to find out you're completely WRONG....
The LC GTR XU1 had 186HP block I believe, where the LJ GTR XU1 had a 202HP block. I believe they ran a Steel crankshaft not a cast crankshaft.
LC X-U1 was the original Model 1970-1971 . LJ X-U1 1972-1973. (the GTR was a cheaper version in the LC range with a 161 motor twin carby with stripes and no ducktail)
@@kymsomerville9024 Spot on the money ~ and I have heard it said now the LC XU-1 increasingly more desirable because of that 186 Block and steel crank ~ ( which I believe started in the 179 engine ?)
I worked in the auto electrical trade for many years and in Canberra I heard of SEVEN instances of 202 / LJ XU-1 putting a rod out of #1 pot after a hard run and winding down.
This car I’m almost certain didn’t leave the factory like that, but was more than likely all fitted up at the dealership as something special for the dealer himself or used as an example of how you could
Option up your Holden.
Mine on the HR 186S was junk ~ bloody thing all but fell apart!)
I have never heard of stock triple strombergs fitted other than some body tinkering ~ and the XU-1 LC had the stock ( factory modified) 186 ~ But then I know nothing!
Unrestored in that condition, but restored if in poor condition, but in saying that, I'll have both, my address is 😂😂 Sweet video 📹 🤙👌👍🍻🇦🇺🦘🪃🏔
How much is each one worth please.
