I mow 2.5 acres with a 21 inch push mower.....it gives me great joy when my fellow man can get a tool like that. You can do so much with that machine! Enjoy Cody. You can make a living with that set up. I refuse to go into debt to buy a rider so I am saving for one. Keeps me humble in the meantime using the pusher.
Good for you. I have a similar acreage and spent the first two years with just a push mower. I finally bought a scrap quad for $250, converted it to run on batteries, and use it to tow around a homemade mower deck made out of scrap stainless steel sheet and two (one cheap and one free) 5 hp mower engines.
That is the way to go. Been on my six acres for five years. First three years with a 32 inch deck. It would take 15 minutes to make one pass. That's about two days to get the place done. Saved my money and this spring was able to get mower with 60 deck and nine miles per hour. Now takes three to four hours. No loans to the bank. Feels great to not owe the man.
The ability to move the arm separate from the machine let's you dig parallel to buildings and obstacles. You can work off the side of your tracks and angle your arm parallel to the building and it lets you get really close. So the width of your machine isn't a factor.
It makes me feel hopeful for our nation when I see people making big leaps and continuing their success. I hope to be able to achieve similar in the near future and be able to pass on something meaningful for my family, values, property and small amount of wealth.

Maybe you could teach Jack how to use the mini excavator and after some time of getting used to it, then if you don't need it in the future, he could start his own small excavating or even a brush clearing business of his own if he wanted to. Obviously that depends on his want to do such a thing but that'd be a cool way to teach your son how to do more on his own. :)
Wife and retired and bought property to homestead. We went down the same road as you. Bought an excavator after getting sticker shock to have any work done. Even got an Ironbull trailer like you. Love them both. Just finished roughing in about a half mile driveway through the woods. Pulled about 100 logs from putting in the driveway. They'll be going onto our sawmill. Also got about 13 cords of firewood. A lot of work but very satisfying.
After watching the progress over the years, I revisited your 2013 interview with Jack Spirko yesterday. Many of the things said in that interview are becoming truer day by day. Not to mention where you were to where you’re at!
I am a pipelayer by trade. The swivel boom is intended for for trenching and leveling in confined spaces and it is really easy to dig a trench straight with the swivel boom as where it sits at the cab is where the trench will come to. You should have went ahead and put a tilt hitch on. We have had the quick bucket hitch in New Zealand since about 1982 my grandfather had one of the frist in our region. Great purchase
A little tip for ya. Tack weld a 3/8 plate on the teeth for trenching and saves alot of clean up. 4 or 5in by the width of your teeth. We have 2 cat 305 E's and it's nice for the oregon soil. Tooth buckets have there place. I really think you will enjoy the heck out of that machine. Watch the window alignment in the track. That's the only problem I've had in 5 years.
I agree with the 12 inch bucket being to narrow. Some people would probably think it is too small a machine to run any wider bucket but I run an 18 inch bucket on a 22 horsepower tractor that is 25 years old.
That is a great video for many reasons. That Cat. - made in the U.S.A. - Brings up some pride for our country that I have not experienced for a while. (along with that F350) Good for you and yours, all the best Cody.
I just recently bought a 3.5 ton Takeuchi, dump trailer and 3/4 ton truck because of inflation. Now I've got to figure out how to get steady work with it.
Agreed. Like so many others, I am very nervous about what to do. Self-sustaining property, like a homestead, is the answer I keep coming back to. Everything indicates we will see double digit interest, soon. So cash reserves are key. But not too much, like you said, inflation evaporates your cash reserves... great video, Cody.
I’d love to see a comparison of this machine versus what your tractor can do. You’ve mentioned in the past the tractor wasn’t exactly a purpose built digger so now would be a good chance to see a side by side. Thanks!
A tractor is a multi tool- it does a lot of things but not very many very well. Especially digging. This machine coupled with a skid steer (purpose built loader for digging) would blow the tractor out of the water. But you’d certainly pay for it if buying all new. Tractors are much better suited for 3pt field implements. For example, you wouldn’t put hay equipment on a skid steer- that would be a waste of time even though you probably could
I got an excavator for the same reasons as Wranglestar about four months ago (I've put 220 hours on it). They are an amazing tool. Having had tractors, skids steers and the like I have to say, the excavator (with a thumb) would likely be the last thing I let go. Move dirt, dig holes, move logs, lift 2000 lb forklift batteries, lift the canopy off the pickup, lift the sawmill head onto the rails...seems like every day I'm turning to it to do stuff that would otherwise be very challenging or time consuming to complete.

Cody I'm happy for you guys, I love my dump trailer. And yes I paid about $9000 dollars trailer on the road and have had people offer me up to $13000.00 because they can't find them around here.
Smart idea, local people probably will need something to dig up so maybe it will pay it self off (in addition to cost that you would have paid for the work done that you going to do in your property)
The motor in that excavator is made by yanmar, still a very good motor and that machine will treat you well. There is rumor that CAT will be making their own engines again in the near future, but they will most likely be (what the compact machinery shop supervisor at the cat dealer I work at ) call Perkapillar engines, when Perkins and CAT build a engine together. enjoy that machine! It’s a nice one.
Congratulations! I pray it can accomplish all you will need it for. I also watch Outdoors With The Morgan’s, & Mike also had to get an excavator for doing work on his property. One extremely useful machine!
The boom slew is really useful! Like, if you can get square to your trench line you can slew the arm to suit, or if you want to dig a pit you can use the cab slew and boom slew together to get a nice square put instead of having to track side to side or ending up with a pizza wedge pit haha
The future has always been uncertain, no one has a crystal ball. Life's like that. Assessing what's happening around you, making decisions and taking action. That's what we do in our lives.
Congrats, I have a cat mini x on my job every day and they earn their keep. The turret pivot is nice because you can dig in your track along a wall or whatever. Congratulations
No less than 20% of your savings should in gold and silver. The more tenuous and uncertain the times, the more your savings should shift from fiat currency to real money. These are very uncertain times. I have a mini and find that articulating pivot point at the housing is useful for digging right up along a wall. Nudge up to the wall, swing the boom over parallel to it and you can dig as close as you need to and still rotate the body to dump well out of the way. I’m also eyeing up a dump trailer to compliment the mini, but at 6 tons it is more a midi and the dump trailer options get limited.
they are incredably useful machines with lots of bucket/blade swapouts. lots of high volume contractors around here have at least one in the inventory for tight spaces they are that flexable .If you ever get some sparetime grab some 3/4"ply scrap, sprayglue and some tinfoil and fashion a wind up key to mount on the back engine hatch,
I am so glad that Juriah is still with you even after the move. He is a good man and he works for even a better man. God bless you and your family and friends.
Good investment. Eventually you’ll lose a track, just watch a couple of videos on that ahead of time and you won’t miss a beat with how to reinstall it. On the trailer I found building some steps on the sides allows me to reach in and grab things with the dump sides. Maybe check out a shocker hitch for the trailer. I use them on my Goosenecks and they help with the ride. God bless!
Praying for you and your family. I give thanks for your generous invitation into your life and most amazingly, your thoughts and thought proces behind your choices. Thanks 😊
The great feature on that cat excavator is that the hydraulic quick change makes it super easy to turn the bucket around backwards to do tunneling under things in difficult places or I use it to lift things up to roof level like shingles when I do roofing.
Your officially back, but what about the scary big rig that doesn’t shift and the no licenses and the cliffs lmao. That story was the best, thanks Cody. And when I heard your back I laughed just as good.
Just a tip from past experiences and you probably know, but it helps a lot if you make up some retractable legs on the back end of the dump trailer.. takes the risk out of the chance if you happen to leave the ball unlocked/wrong ball ect or if the mechanism fails...
Very nice machine. You have indeed invested wisely. Anytime you can do something yourself that normally would need to be hired out, you will be taking pride in the job done and another skill learned for you and your family. Being Self Sufficient is the key Stay Safe & Good Luck

Smart idea, local people probably will need something to dig up so maybe it will pay it self off (in addition to cost that you would have paid for the work done that you going to do in your property)
Awesome machine I love my 30g Deere I just bought in may
The motor in that excavator is made by yanmar, still a very good motor and that machine will treat you well. There is rumor that CAT will be making their own engines again in the near future, but they will most likely be (what the compact machinery shop supervisor at the cat dealer I work at ) call Perkapillar engines, when Perkins and CAT build a engine together. enjoy that machine! It’s a nice one.
I bought a backhoe last year for most of the reasons you stated. Cheers and God bless!
Cool, I have been anxiously waiting for an update on the commercial property plans. Wise investment! 🇺🇸
Congratulations! I pray it can accomplish all you will need it for.
I also watch Outdoors With The Morgan’s, & Mike also had to get an excavator for doing work on his property.
One extremely useful machine!
I have the 304 Cat. Best bang for the buck, 800hr and zero issues.
I love It!! No buyers remorse here! Taking matters in your own hands.
they are incredably useful machines with lots of bucket/blade swapouts. lots of high volume contractors around here have at least one in the inventory for tight spaces they are that flexable .If you ever get some sparetime grab some 3/4"ply scrap, sprayglue and some tinfoil and fashion a wind up key to mount on the back engine hatch,
I am so glad that Juriah is still with you even after the move. He is a good man and he works for even a better man. God bless you and your family and friends.
Have much for fuel and supplies...thanks for your insight ...God Bless
Food shortages in America. Grandfathers all over our country are rolling over in their graves. SMH.
I would hold onto that escivator it would be good for gardens and things also
Good investment. I use them on my
Goosenecks and they help with the ride.
"Why did we buy a mini excavator."
My personal answer: Because they are DANK! Lol
Being Self Sufficient is the key
Stay Safe & Good Luck
Loving that little scoop shuffle off the trailer at the beginning when the tracks are already on the ground lol!
I just bought a hitachi mini ex for my property, you won’t regret that purchase!
It seems exciting! Good luck!
Just think of the moat and ramparts you could make with that mini-excavator!
