thats the first thing that i thought. i have a dump trailer and i do have power down and i would still be worried about that much weight coming down. that might not be power down and with that not being his trailer i wouldnt wanna damage it

I’m an east coast guy, and when you started unloading all I could think was you better raise your forks!!! But I can’t expect a west coaster to think that far ahead 😂

when I worked at the knife making shop, the owner died. His widow tried to sell the fork lift. She was offered $200 for it. A friend said sell it for scrap weight. She got $1,800!! Theirs didn't have brakes either!

Us East Coasters would have had a winch on that equipment trailer to help load and unload. After all, we are only capable of lifting Stihls with 18 inch bars!

I'm sure if a highway patrol had of yanked him over he would have had a few violations. Supposedly being in excavation I would have though he would know better than to put as much weight on the tongue of the truck as possible. Whatever though, and he's lucky he never had an accident on the highway.
Drove my forklift 4 miles along the road due to two previous bad experiences breaking a ramp and going through a floor!
Now that’s a video I would have loved to see. Lol a forklift bombing down the road. That’s so perfect.

no brakes and juriah was squatting in front of those forks, and for a moment there i thought he might be impaled! now that was scary, thank God none of that happened.
For a guy who owned a wrecking yard and operated equipment you would think you would know to position the load in the trailer over the axles and raise the forks going down. Lol

Well, you want a bit of tongue weight. It's far safer to have a bit more tongue weight than to be distributed off the trailing end of the rearest axle.
@@OceanofMaya I'm well aware of that and am watching my truck as I load things to see it drop some as an indication on how far I have to go as there is a max down pressure weight for the hitch and insert as well and hollow insert is only good for hauling max 5000lb including trailer weight which a lot of people likely don't realize. He just had way more weight on the truck than necessary and likely safe and to drive down the highway smoothly and properly. Positioning of weight in and on a trailer makes a big difference.
@@OceanofMaya Dropping a dirt bike doesn't destroy it at all but he did a bad enough number on it ( because of pavement and crashing into the other 2) that they gave him a different one to ride. I like the guy and watch all his videos and love his courage and being game to push himself and try extreme trails on his bike. Just picking at him because of East coast comments. Would love to ride with him. Good guy!

A winch would have gone a long way to have safely loaded this forklift.
And unloading it . These are the kind of things that obituarys are written about.
As an East Coast guy, the first thing I thought of was a winch
I'm a West Coast guy - but was thinking a winch as soon as he said there were no brakes. Keep it simple and don't take unnecessary risks.
I’m a Southern guy and join my East and West Coast guys in hopes Cody does not risk life and limb on a stunt such as this ever again. He is a valuable asset here and needs to protect himself as well as he protects everyone around him.

I operate a forklift for a living. Operating one with no brakes is extremely dangerous. Glad everything went well.🤙🏻
Must be a union operator lol, most old forklifts don’t have any brakes as it’s expensive to fix them. I started running forklift at 12 years old my family was in the freight business loading barges.

I was a mechanic for 10 years, an im glad i was ,because shop prices are crazy now ,i though of this because you said the tow guy said 600 , my wife's car needs an alternator changed an it alone is 400 bucks ,imagine how much on top the shop fee would be, people take advantage of learning things to help themselves not have to hire people, this also allows you to help family an friends, believe me im always getting ask to work on stuff for food 😂, at least they know a way to a man's heart .
Done this twice - once with an electric stock picker and once with a similar forklift. Used a heavy duty come-along to do it with just a little more control than this method. :P
Some others have already commented about this, but I saw the sticker on the side that said "Dump Trailer" and wondered why you you were using the jack. I enjoyed the hydraulics epiphany.

Just asking, as my first thought would be this, but why not just use a winch to get it on and off? Slow and safe? Never had to load or unload a forklift though...so this is out of my circle of experience. I spent years loading and unloading 10k loads, but thankfully never a forklift. =)

Using a winch is universal, except in Oregon for some reason. Guess they like to live dangerously.
yep winch and a few snatch blocks to make easy work at least make a safe climb up the trailer, and a safe slow decent.
Maybe look up the forklift model weight for a rough estimate. You never know for sure how heavy they can be.
Most forklifts have a data plate on them listing weight and capacity. I've hauled probably close to 100 of them

A quick Google search shows a similar forklift, Clark BY40B, is about 7,400 pounds.
They're usually around 8000lbs for one that size.

I’m 16 and 2 years ago I bought a forklift with 16000 hours on it for scrap price. Cleaned the distributer out and it ran great. No brakes though. GO TO NAPA AND FOR $100 AND AN AFTERNOON SHOWING YOUR KID DRUM BRAKES INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES AND WHEEL CYLINDERS it might just save your life or the walls of your shop. Believe it or not your local Napa will have a book on Clark lifts all the way back to the 60s and if they don’t have the parts in stock they can have them next day.
Please take this advice!
Hey Cory east coast Canadian guy here that has done the same thing but the forklift was a homemade unit out of a 1939 army truck with no brakes , which I unloaded off the back of a flat bed truck in a barnyard on a manure pile ( no sh*t ) , You did good for a southern west coast guy , bless you

Had a similar experience unloading a MF 65 tractor that arrived on a tractor trailer; when it wanted to go, it went. Drove it down board ramps onto a roll back and then down the tilted rollback. Old tractor tires and smooth steel do not play well together.
Cody my man you have winches, snatch blocks, pulleys chain and cable. There was no reason to be so sketchy with that. Your always imparting on us the wisdom of doing things safely. Some times you got to do with what you gotta but I’m sure you can imagine how bad things can go. Glad your safe and hope your move goes as smooth as possible
The hydraulics thing reminds me of how I forgot that I owned many leaf blowers when I was raking my yard with hand rakes, and my friend looks over at me with a mad look and says " Why are you making me do this when you have leaf blowers in the garage" my reply to that is I simply forgot that I had them I had always done it the hard way growing up and simply forgot the luxuries I now have. Don't you have a backhoe for your tractor, you could have dug 2 trenches and backed the trailer into it and it would have been a piece of cake.
I move forklifts almost daily for my job. Lot easier when you have the pneumatic tires and a low flatbed lol
VersaDump, made my MidSota MFG. An amazing Minnesota company that is by far the best trailer manufacturer in the USA. I love my MidSota trailer and so does everyone I know. I also toured their facilities, great building and the fabricators are very skilled.
My two year old son started clapping when you got it up on the trailer. He loves watching you with all the tractors , equipment and trucks.

Thanks for the vid. Bought an 8400 lb forklift and moved to my shop last week. Contemplated doing it with my dump trailer as well but in the end chickened out and paid local wrecker service to do it for $170. Now I feel like I missed out on all the fun! Good job!

If you puts couple of 2x12’s under the rear wheels of your truck and raise them 4” it will lower the trailer tail.
$612 is money well spent to move that fork lift, especially with no btakes. I paid $400 to have my pontoon boat shipped 250 miles to my cottage and I was happy to do it.

Wranglerstar, As an East Coast Man I would use the Warn winch on the pick-up. Disconnect the trailer and put the nose of the truck up to the trailer tongue area and run the cable over the top to the fork lift. You could load and unload with a much lower heart rate. Nice job anyway.
Should have just bought a new forklift off amazon and got free delivery :)

Back as a teenager, I worked at a Polaris shop. We had a very similar fork lift and we used it in the yard out back of the shop. It was on a hill, most of it not paved. I look back now at how many things could have gone wrong so many times while working there. But at the time the thought of danger never crossed my mind.
The only danger here would be ramp misalignment or collapse, having brakes that work don't really matter.

I moved a forklift I bought, about that size of yours here, on a car trailer I had... NOT FUN!!! It had no brakes on it and it rolled down the trailer and smashed the winch housing. I thought I was literally going to get crushed. It was SKETCH!!! I FEEL YA ON THIS ONE!

Dang we had a broken forklift towed a while back and they had to winch it up. About a 20 min drive the guy charged us $100. 650 sounds crazy
I moved my 1970's toyota all terrain forklift twice with an 18' steel deck car trailer and 8' ramps. 1st move was when I bought it, about 100 mile drive , then second time was about a 10 mile drive. Slow going for everything went good.
I'm really sorry to have to say this, but operating a forklift without brakes is just plain stupid!!!!! :-( Thumbs down!!
I have done some sketchy things with a fork lift. Idle time is the devils hand. Got one stuck on a low dock plate and a short box truck when I was 16. Used them to change lights in the warehouse when the safety folks were gone. Tied a rope in the rafter of the warehouse, backed up the fork and raised it to create a huge rope swing......Dont do that.
What I would recommend trying is put a guy on a wooden pallet with a rope handle, whip that rear wheel drive forklift around in circles. Just like taking turns on water skis, with a much harder landing.
As someone who has driven a forklift in an industrial setting for almost seven years I've had many instances where I would have to use the reverse gear as a brake and it's always been a sphincter tightening experience

i remember a farm i worked on their tractor had no brakes, i only found out when barreling downhill to the gate with a feeders weight pushing it, that feeder was an inch narrower than the gate posts,

Build a tramp out of earth with railroad ties. Also a wear surface out of class 2 AB ( asphalt base) on top. Railroad ties to create vertical laying horizontal , bolted if you like, and couple vertical post ties. at loading end. It's how we do it in the earthmoving industry. Saves time, one guy, and much safer. As much iron as you have, it is efficient. If tractor gets moved to shop. Use it for pickups, trailers, deliveries. Also, you have what looks like asphalt around shop. Depending on how hot it gets, keep a couple of bags of sand to lightly cover approach and departures if wheels are tearing it up turning too sharply. Looks like a nice job. Plant flowers around ramp. That'll be a first.
The rental yard near me has a trailer that doesn’t have axles under it so the deck drips level to the ground. It’s an excellent forklift hauler! I just had to tell them my pettibone Mercury was under 10k, which I feel was the truth, but not by much! I feel for you with those hard rubber tires, mine was stuck all the time out in the gravel.
As I am a retired forklift operator, I was taught to drive forward up the ramp and backward down it. I was also driving ones with brakes, so you might have been right in doing the way you did.
Forklifts don't usually injure people....they kill. Have hauled forklifts in dump trailers quite often, the steel deck even with a smidge of dew or oil can make for a bad day. Add a winch to the equation and it becomes a fairly simple task to load and unload.
We had to move a few forklifts from our current factory over to a neighboring building we rented. It also includes crossing rail road tracks and going down a concrete ramp. NEVER AGAIN! I think I lost a filling in my tooth from the tracks. Going down the ramp, I hit the brakes too hard. The back end swung around slightly and almost tipped over. I let off the brakes and rode it down the ramp. It’s a totally different world being on an indoor forklift outside. Glad everything went well for ya.
Can confirm that loading a forklift is a nightmare. Had to load our company forklift on a 25ft gooseneck trailer. This thing weighed so much it pickup the front trailer and the back of the truck and started to push the entire thing forward and had to just mash the gas to barely make it up.
Make sure you have enough propane and diesel fuel for both vehicles with forks at each location. I'd hate to see it trucked off to the new homestead. I'm expecting a video series on how to replace brakes on a Clark forklift this winter
