    Yours is the best 450L vlog in the world. I’m a 500excf owner but I enjoy the series and in particular the oil investigations. Both bikes have similar oil change recommendations so I await your findings with great interest. By the way, loved the way you stood on the rack of your bike last episode. Couldn’t do that on a standard KTM but might be able to do it on mine as I built a pannier frame/rack system. Here in Australia it appears that the 450L has been a sales disaster. Pricing was ridiculous at first but it has plummeted. I would be interested but the lack of decent sized fuel tanks put me off. I wouldn’t be put off by the Honda recommended servicing schedule as I believe the bike would be a much better build quality than the KTM.

      John T. Young Wow, thanks John. Just looked at their site and it looks very good, reasonable price too. Now the 450 L looks a very distinct option as the wonderful build quality of Honda’s is a big issue for me as I ride solo. Will keep you updated. Must go through you videos to see the best fueling tuning options. Here in Australia we don’t tend to be burdened with the full on pollution devices

    Hello John T. I have been watching your channel for a few months. I finally was convinced to get a new 450L and picked it up on Wednesday. I have ridden it about 50 miles and I cannot believe the throttle toggle response. This is terrible. I hope I can get used to it, but I seriously doubt it. I am thinking of ordering the Vortez and the pipe. Question is why you went vortex Yoshi vs vortex and FMF?
    Your channel does a great job on highlighting the options you have installed. I will be rewatching these as you progressed with the bike. After getting the throttle under control, I will likely do the seat next. That seat is the worst I have felt on any of my bikes.
    Again, thank you for the videos and adventures. Thanks for your service to your community thru you affiliation with the fire Dept. You are a good man, keep it up.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much John. I really appreciate that. You're right the throttle response is awful. It has to do with the ECU turning the injector completely off with the throttle closed, the light weight engine internals, and the lack of any kind of cush drive. Riders coming from a street bike hate it most. The Vortex will smooth it out a lot. I went with Yosh just because I've always had Yosh or Two Brothers systems. No other reason. Add the new ECU and a pipe and HANG ON.

    • @ThinkTexas
      @ThinkTexas 4 года назад

      Rod Z Thank you for the advise. I have ridden it for 150 miles at this point. True. The seat is feeling a little better. I will hold off for a while to see how it settles in. The throttle is not as bad as when I was first getting used to it. But it still is not what I like. Thanks again for the advise.

    Another excellent video John. Greatly appreciated! I'm weighing the new CRF300L or CRF300RL against the CRF450RL. The lack of suspension adjustment on the 300's really concerns me. I know the CRF450L has significantly reduced maintenance milage intervals compared to the CRF300's...however, after watching your valve clearance and oil change videos I feel confident I can do both with no issues. No Honda dealer in Tennessee has the new 2021 CRF300's in stock...but ALL the dealers in TN have the 2021 CRF450RL in stock and on their floor. I've been working on big BMW's for years and your Honda seems fairly straightforward to maintain by comparison. Another question for you please: do you by any chance have a list you could post of the many upgrades you've done to your CRF450L? I'd be very curious to see that. Thanks again and GREAT JOB!

    I usually pour few drops of oil on the o-rings for smoother sliding + avoiding the risk of pinching them. In my old Yamaha manual they mention oiling the filter before installation (to be honest, the reason is beyond my knowledge). Being curios about Honda`s approach, I had a look in the manual (same as yours, only that I have it only in digital format). Nothing about pre-oiling the filter but they do mention about using vaseline for the spring :).

    John, When you tip the bike on its side, by your demonstration, it looks like all the oil is still contained on the side of the bike. When you open up both the oil filter cover and the drain plug, you can promise me that no oil is going to gush out? In the beginning of this video, when you put the bike on its side, if you look closely you already have the EZ drain system adapter on the bike but I assume that is just your editing a new take showing tipping the bike and not you installing that to drain some of the oil first. BTW, you are one of reasons I just got a 450 so you are to blame!

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  2 года назад +2

      It's always all my fault. I'm getting used to it. No oil will come out when you tip the bike over on its RIGHT side. 1. Tip it over 2. Replace the drain plug with the drain system. 3. Replace the oil filter while it's laying there. 4. Stand the bike up and drain the oil out being sure to rock the bike back and forth a few times. 5. Replace the drain system with the plug and DO NOT tighten the plug down very hard. Just a nudge.

    Well here's an update from my oil change. Had a battle to get sump plug out . Probably overtightened at the shop before I bought it. Oil was real hot coming out as needed the bike real hot to help get the drain plug out. First thing I noticed was it stunk of petrol and was water thin. That said the bike was very hot so would have thinned the oil.
    Just looked like a lot of oil so thought I would measure it into the waste container. There was 1380cc.
    Now I didn't fill it so can't say how much was in it at the start but seems to much. Could the volume be made up with petrol? When I fill the bike I will measure exactly how much goes in . Then check how much comes out next time. Oil has been in for 680 miles as I picked it up second hand just after the 1200 mile oil change. Have you noticed if you have more oil coming out?
    Keep up the good videos 👌

      I have not measured in or not, but I will starting next oil change. For $40 you can have your oil analyzed. Mine has gotten as high as 5% gas. Thanks for the unpdate.

      It doesn’t take much at all to lock it up. Be careful not to crack the casing. If it’s stuck really bad, let a dealership break it for you.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  Год назад

      Well you can try running the bike till it’s hot and then icing the plug then pull it out. Just try not to deform the hex hole. That’ll press outwards and maybe crack the case. When you put it back in just barely snug it. Barely.

      @jarrod1687 what if you ride it 10 km is caked in mud? Then you should clean it after 10 km. I clean it when it’s dirty and move it to keep it from rusting after each cleaning. But I don’t really stick to any schedule.

    The reason i don't read manuals is the amount useless information puts me to sleep john .
    How many times have you watched a video on RUclips & discovered a far less time consuming & less difficult way to do the job .
    Just because a manufacturer technician wrote the book doesn't necessarily mean its the best way to do the job .
    In most repair shops you'll find those that read & write books in the office & the real Mechanic's on tools in the workshop & they don't use the manual for anything other then toilet paper when supplies are low

      Correct. Only use moto oil and be sure it's for wet clutch applications. But the brand does not matter - Motul, Amsoil, Motorex, etc....
