I've tried SO MANY different things to get rid of fungus gnats and like you said, they keep coming back. I started using cinnamon just a couple weeks ago and it's already made a huge difference. Thanks for sharing!
Good stuff! 😁
@@SheffieldMadePlants is it any kind of cinnamon or a specific type?🪴
@@rebeccahay5294 ceylon
Any update to give me hope, Aveleen?
@@ReapingTheHarvest tbh, they still aren't completely gone. But the cinnamon has helped keep it minimal! That and watching soil moisture. But no complete cure yet.
I only have a few house plants, i placed them by the window with the window sill open and blew those little shits out with a fan before using the cinnamon. Thanks.
NUTMEG! - it's my alternative to cinnamon (cinnamon makes me sick). I too tried all the other remedies but always fell short. I started sprinkling powdered nutmeg onto the surface of my plant's soil. Water the plant as you normally would, nothing fancy. Then wait. It seemed those in the soil wanted to jump ship right away ... but that didn't matter much ... what mattered was whether the eggs and larva in the soil would survive and come out as flying gnats and start the cycle all over again - I think the life cycle takes about 4 weeks. So you need to keep watching for 4 weeks. I re-applied maybe once or twice more ...and waited. And .. the little bleepers were GONE GONE GONE. :-D So if you can't use cinnamon - go for nutmeg. You might be interested to learn that in large quantities nutmeg is a pesticide for real ... so ... don't go crazy with it... you could probably overdo things. As the saying goes, "the poison is in the dose..." Something that is food at a tiny dose can be poison if you overload massively. (Heck, you can even overdose on pure water - so be reasonable in all things you use.) Hope this helps!
Didn’t know that thanks
@@SheffieldMadePlants You're welcome. "Myristicin" is the natural insecticide compound - it's in other foods and herbs besides nutmeg too, but I don't know if anything has as much as nutmeg. You'd have to search on it. Thanks for your great channel!
I applied Cinnamon on my fungus and mealybug infested Hibiscus plant as your advice and the plague has significantly reduced. Once again my Hibiscus plant seems well and happy and started budding healthily like it did before . I had used some other products proposed by others but they didn't really work. I find your videos practical and helpful with a tinch of humour. Thank you Mr Sheffield Made Plants 👍
Great success story! Thanks for watching
This is genius, I'm so excited to try it! Thanks for sharing this solution!
I am really glad I watched this video. My golden snake plant (sansevieria) all of a sudden had fungus gnats - I have no idea where or how it stemmed from last night. It could be because the soil was getting moist but I had no idea that would trigger gnats to invade my plant. I noticed one or two in the day time, but late evening they were crawling and flying all over and around my plant. I watched this video and lathered cinnamon on top of the soil and the plant itself. Within 1 hour, they all flew away. This morning I saw 1 but I think the root of the issue has been resolved. Thank you for this video.
Great stuff 👍. They easily invade plants
Thank You, I was looking everywhere for help, and everyone recommended mosquito bites and more, I tried this, did a top dress of cinnamon, dried the soil out, and viola! no more gnats after 3 days.
Glad it helped!
I've had very good luck using mosquito bits in a gallon of water. Let them soak in the water, then strain it, and water the plants with it. It kills the larvae. I use the yellow sticky traps for the adult gnats. Used together, it clears up the gnats fairly quickly.
👌
Hi, what are mosquito bits ?
@@twwoody813 you can find them on amazon
The effective constituent is cinnamaldehyde.
Cassia cinnamon 95% cinnamaldehyde, which gives cassia a very strong spicy flavour. However, Ceylon cinnamon has around 50-60% cinnamaldehyde.
Fungus gnats are great! All of my sundews love them!!
Gotta love em 😅
Who would have known that cinnamon is so useful on houseplants. Thanks 🙏
Glad you found it interesting
It's good for people too

Sometimes I wonder if I’d be better off without plants in my house
Ok I just talked to a Lady in these apartments I just moved into. She said they had exterminator here for knats. I sprinkled the cheap cinnamon on the top soil of my plants. Maybe tomorrow when I water I'll use the tea. I'm excited to see if this works! It's frustrating to have a knats fly around your face when your lying in bed trying to read! Ugh
I know so annoying. Hope you get good results!
Oh my goodness they are the MOST annoying things EVER created!
@@SheffieldMadePlants The cinnamon only works for awhile

@@SheffieldMadePlants well there's not much now at all but I don't know if it's because it's winter.
Thank you soo much! I have tried other remedies and still have problems. This is the info I needed. Of all the bug issues I have encountered, these gnats are persistent.
Thanks 😊
Great, will try pure Cinnamon in the next few days, Thanks 🙂

i Have used it for stem and root rot i use it on my orchids
I watched this video yesterday and immediately afterwards, sprinkled organic ground cinnamon on the top of the soil on most of my house plants. I removed the gnat covered yellow sticky things and placed new ones in the pots. I awoke all excited to see if it worked. I had the same feeling I had as a child on Christmas morning. I jumped out of bed and raced downstairs and behold! Not a single gnat on the yellow sticky things! Amazing! There is a slight aroma of cinnamon in the air. Nice. Thank you!
Nice!
exactly what i was gonna use on my plants glad i watched this video first thanks!
Glad I could help!
I Like The Idea Of The Cinnamon Tea Spray!!! I'll Have To Look Into Purchasing The Kind You're Using... Because I Am UIsing A Little Bottle From My Kitchen That I Felt Had Been Contaminated.
Nice and easy to make.
I find your videos really helpful, thank you. I have tried the cinnamon on my Monstera and Peace Lily and it has reduced the gnat infestation over 2-3 weeks. I still see the odd gnat on the cinnamon however, I guess the eggs are still hatching. I have also used cinnamon on a large Jade tree where I had to snap off a branch and seems to have healed well.
That’s great 👍
Wow wow great easy and cheaper
Absolutely
Oh and yes i will be watering from bottom now , i actually use the water from my dehumidifier, as no chlorine ! Works a treat 😂
My mother just told me to do this. I've been using peroxide, flour, grits, even a mixture of alcohol and water and the little buggers just won't go away. They hide in the mix but if I move the plant they fly everywhere. I'm going to get some cinnamon ASAP.
Hope it works for you!
Did the cinnamon help?
I have a fungus gnat colony in my soil of my houseplants. I’m going to apply some cinnamon and see how it goes!
Good luck!
@@SheffieldMadePlants how often can I treat my house plants with cinnamon? Does the soil have to be dry before adding cinnamon? Thank you
@@saun_7 I tend to top up every couple of months when the cinnamon starts to drop into the soil. No worries about how wet the soil is
great advise thanks, although buying an organic ceylon cinnamon for this seems a bit of a financial overkill, and also a waste, that's the most expensive cinnamon there is! I'm sure regular cassia cinnamon is just fine!
Set a bowl of mint mouthwash near gnats.
🎉thank you so much ❤
Any time!
I sprinkled cinnamon on my plant once a long time ago, and the only thing it did was grow mold and mildew. Maybe I need to try the pure cinnamon that you show in your video, rather than the one in the spice bottle from the grocery store.
Great information! Thank you!🙂
Thanks for watching 👍
I decided to try cinnamon and garlic powder.. I have tried peppermint oil & soap with minced garlic and when they fly out that kills them. Crazy trying to get them out of your soil. Every time I think I beat it.. Wrong again. That must be the nats that were layed as eggs. All I did was open my windows while putting my plants on the window ledge and now I got Nats. They must smell the dirt and know you just watered your plants .
I tried all the organic methods and still had fungal gnats. Last night I resorted to a Malathion drench. I read the instructions for a spray mixture, (1 1/2 teaspoon to one gallon of water). I place the plant (Queen of the Night) into a large bowl and drenched the potting soil not the leaves. It took about two quarts to drench the soil. I then raise the pot and sat it on a cup in another large bowl and let drain over night. I also had a small fan blowing on the plant to dry out the top soil. I am sure some will freak out that I used Malathion. Unless you're drinking it, snorting it, showering in it and spaying it everyday without protective gear everyday it is safe.
I just hope it works.........
I don’t think I’ve come across that. Let us know if it works
I had an infestation that couldn't be controlled last July into August. It was like a heat wave for a couple weeks. I tried everything that other people tried. I lost 150 plants indoor I finally used fine sand about 1 inch on top of soil packed down. It really worked great. Also, I found the gnats were also entering through the bottom drain. holes. I shop vaced all the dirt I could before putting sand in I put new soil then sand. Bottom holes I covered with thick felt. I was so crazy I even took soil samples and examined them under the magnifier and saw the disgusting babies, but I did, for the most part, won the battle but lost 150 plants. I'm going to try cinnamon when I repot them tonight. Thanks for the advice
I put cinnamon around my plants after watering them with a mix of a few drops of Dawn dish soap and water also use this mix with vinegar in a jar set them where your plants are and in soda bottle etc caps put them on the topsoil near the plant I caught and killed a ton of larvae in them
Cool Thanks for the tip

Interesting. I have a begonia with a powdery mildew problem that I can't ever seem to quite get rid of. Might give this a go!
Good luck!
Did this work? I have the same issue and want to try it out myself
I wonder if cinnamon disrupts mycorrhizae in growing media
I've had the best results with neem oil so far but the infestation is not completely gone. Do you think a mix of neem oil spraying and cinnamon could do the trick ?
Should do 👍
Is cinnamon harmful to plants in any way? I have read some articles warning that large amounts of cinnamon can hurt plants and am curious about its affects on the plants long term health. Great video btw.
I’ve not heard that myself. Where did you read it, would be interested to know? We’re just sprinkling a layer on top so shouldn’t do any harm. Not noticed anything on my plants anyway
I'm fighting the worst infestation in the history of gnats. I've used multiple bottles of Neem, Spinosad, BT, bags of Mosquito Bits, tons of yellow sticky traps, peroxide, and they keep coming back stronger. I just got some peppermint oil and cinnamon to add to the arsenal, so I really hope this helps. I've also started bottom feeding the plants that I can do that with... These things are making me go mad.
They are such a nuisance! I've realised it's near impossible to be gnat free. Hope those remedies work. Bottom watering helps.

Hi Michael please read my comment above it tells how I killed them eggs and Larvae I have a burning hatred for them. Peroxide doesn't work I tried that long ago
Can you please share if it's gotten better or not after using cinnamon for your case?
Any updates? How you getting on 8 months later?
@@kray9438 I ended up getting lucky, and a bag of soil I bought had rove beetles and predatory mites in it. They quickly spread around to all my pots and killed all the gnats. I rarely ever see gnats now as long as I don't overwater. The cinnamon and peppermint oil didn't really seem to do anything for me.
Sounds like a plan! Stupid question - but do you just keep reapplying after watering! Can you still use if you already have a no knat based gravel on the plant surface? Cheers bud top tips as always
Top up when it’s looking low
If you just get rid of all the plants, the fungus flies go, too.
I FOUND OUT WHAT TO USE NEEM CAKE IT WORKS
Where the hell do they sell that
Week into using mosquito dunks and it’s made no difference. Trying cinnamon!
I am constantly preaching the gospel of cinnamon to my plant friends

Can I use Mosquito bits directly in my indoor house plants? Can I use Neem cake with Mosquito bits simultaneously? Can I use the tea with the Mosquito bits together in the plants?
Never used mosquito bits
Do you have other ways to fight mealy bugs? Thank you!
Dabbing rubbing alcohol on them is best. Give the plant a good show to wash them off too
So 2 questions (I'm drowning in gnats with indoor and outdoor plants!!!) Should i sprinkle before or after watering and if before, do you recommended reapplying after watering until the gnats are gone? THANKS SO MUCH!!!
Sprinkle after. You shouldn’t need to reapply too soon after
I'm going to try the Cinnamon on the soil of all of my house plants - how often do I need to reapply the cinnamon?
When it’s looking thin on top. Maybe every month
I sprinkle sand on top of the soil of my plants for fungus gnat. About 5mm. Inexpensive and totally effective
I’ll have to try that thanks. I tried with perlite but did nothing
@@SheffieldMadePlants I've tried it already - didn't work - already use Cinnamon which is much better.
I tried this around my Portulacaria Afra plants. My plants did NOT like it at all. Plants started rotting in some cases - soil got very clumpy/gloopy. And gnats were back within a day or two... it did smell nice though...
Oh no it shouldn't do that 🤔
I don't have fungus gnats, the bugs I have are absolutely tiny. I put up fly strips and it seems the high up you go on the fly strip the more of these tiny flying bugs are on it.
You don't know what they are?
@@SheffieldMadePlants no, but they hang around the plants so I'm still going to give this a try
So could it just be mixed in with the soil if you make your own soil mix?
Might help a bit but I don’t think it would be as effective as on the top

Hey there!Since you added this video I tried the cinnamon hack. At first it worked great, but by now mold grew in some places over my cinnampn and starts to kill my plants. Where does this come from? I thought cinnamon kills fungus, but now it crows on cinnamon? O_O HELP Obi van Kenobi, yo are my last hope!
Hello. I doubt the mold problem happened because of the cinnamon. Must be an underlying issue somewhere. You're not watering too much?
@@SheffieldMadePlants Not really, no. Different plants in different pots on different locations. Several at work, several home, who never had contact with each other. Most of then I watered during the winter time very rarely. At most once any 3 weeks, also fewer than normal.
Coulkd the reason for mold be, for me poring the water over the cinnanom and not watering them from the bottom?

@SheffieldMadePlants I've seen you mention Tanlin drops before for fungus gnats but can't seem to find them easily in the US. Where do you get yours, how do they work, and how well do they work? Can they be combined with Mosquito bits??
I bought it from amazon. Not sure on availability to US. I'd say mosquito bits are probably better anyway. It's banned for home use in UK though
HELP, I traveled due to work and my boyfriend completely overwatered all my plants. When I arrived the soil was submerged in water. That's why I watched your video.. and followed ur instructions :).. but I don't know. I'm having a feeling that pothos is just fine.. I didn't see any bug.. well, I got worried first because when I was watering it the first time, I was watering it..
