    Come to California (Bay Area) and be a midwife!!! We work great hours and get great pay. If working only in the hospital we work three 12hr shifts per week and don’t work on call. If you work in the clinic too then you do 2 clinic days and 2 L&D shifts or 3 clinic days and 1 L&D shift. No overtime. Good benefits. We care for mainly low risk mommas too. Unfortunately, many Georgia midwives are over worked, underpaid, and burned out. The midwives out here I would say are pretty happy and have good work life balance.

      The midwife I shadowed who works under Moses Cone in Greensboro works three 12 hours per week. But midwives who work for a private faculty work the type of hours you were describing. So I think it just depends on the hospital and faculty you work for.

    • @bry516
      @bry516 4 года назад +9

      Yeah it definitely depends on the hospital you work for. If you work for a private practice or free standing birth center you can expect to have on-call hours plus clinic.

    I and my 7 CNM colleagues work 40 hours per week. I caught 6 babies on my 12 hour shift last week. I also work as a FNP 8 hours per week at another clinic. I’m in Reno, NV making 115k without adding the loan repayment and extra job. My first job out of school I made 100k in southern Illinois. I moved across the country for my work life balance. The thing that helped me was the Midwives of Color as part of ACNM. My mama midwife is awesome.

    I’m a nurse in a level 4 nicu and I just got accepted to the CNM program at university of Michigan. I feel you! But I also think being anyone in medicine will burn you out. Doctor, nurses, or NP’s on any unit can burn out, regardless of specialty. My fiancé is a general surgeon and he is burnt out, I’m also burnt out. Every single thing you said has crossed my mind and I’m both excited and terrified to be a midwife. But I also can’t imagine doing anything else... I love working with moms and babies. I’ve spoke to FNP’s and a lot of them said the most they do in regards to women’s health is prescribe birth control and are unequipped to do/handle anything else (prenatal care/ well-women care/ paps/ post-partum care). They are proficient in caring for the elderly and kids but the majority of their patients are the elderly (a specialty I’m personally not interested in getting into further education for). So for me it was important that if I ever went into advanced practice that it was in a specialty that I’m passionate about studying and caring for (women and babies). This is all just my personal belief, I fully understand your rationale and everything you said is true. I’m already looking into continuing a school after my CNM in order to get a PhD. I want to do research and enter academia, to really investigate maternal and infant mortality further and whether certain midwifery practices can be preventive. The program I’m accepted into also looks at midwifery in terms of international medicine. Ive always wanted to work as a midwife in other countries and to learn about different birthing practices. Midwifery exists in other countries but FNP does not, I’m a traveler and it was important that I could take my work to other areas of the world. There is a world outside of the hospital/clinic as well!

    • @ebbyknights1820
      @ebbyknights1820 Год назад

      @@Mshardway Hi, honestly being a doula Is like being an entrepreneur. Work life balance? Depends on your support syst and clients you choose to have a month. You only get steady clients based on how you market your services. Plus your clients may be due in that month and you may have another due in 4 or 5 months. Also remember when a woman is expecting, she can deliver before or after her due date so you have to make sure your always available or have a back up. Doula work is something you have to be passionate about and flexible. You will make additional income but it can fluctuate based on clientele. Always recommend having additional source of income on the side until you build up and family support/baby sitter. Rewarding if you love it but not a get rich quick type of career. It's more of a rich feeling from seeing life come into the world.

    Same here!!! I’ve been a labor and delivery nurse for almost 7 yrs and now I’m trying to rethink what I want. I thought of doula , birth teacher and breastfeeding coach then do l&d per diem. Because I love everything about birth but I’m burnt out tooo

  • @TheCraftsWOMBman

    Feel you, I love childbirth (healthy, vaginal births). Not for the on-call life and the pay. I work as a doula and assistant midwife sometimes, but mostly online doula trainings. The burnout is real, also, so I take breaks often.

    I’ve been an L&D nurse for 2 years & this is spot on ! I feel like all L&D nurses love Obstetrics & after working with midwives/OBs in L&D you see the reality/the nature of the work life balance. Midwives are overworked & underpaid ! It doesn’t make sense to go back to school to work more & get paid less. The Thats why most midwives have compassion fatigue & have burnout fatigue. Thank you so much for this!I’ve been trying to explain to the whole world why I have also decided to not go that route. Now I can just send them your video 😊

    i love this video! Ive work as a doula in MA and swore to the heavens i was going to be a NP-nurse midwife and aide in health disparities. The kind of midwife i would want to be is present from start to finish which are often found in birthing centers and means there would be no set hours; im there when i gotta be there. & (please correct me if Im wrong guys but) based off my shadowing experiences the midwifes that work in the hospital with those ideal set shifts catch babies with little to no prior connection to the birthing mom and you see a lot of burn out. I would want to be there prenatal and antepartum to have that connection. Either way the work life balance is not as ideal for me. I actually felt bad for feeling like that; im glad you made this video
    and your decision is heavily respected because you talked about your work life balance which is key FOR YOUR COMFORT but you also put into perspective that no one needs a health professional thats not all in for what they do!

    I am waiting so impatiently for my acceptance letter. Ive worked over 55hrs in a week doing physical labour so I'm sure I can handle an on call schedule. i prepare and use my time wisely. a 5 min nap during your 15min break can save your day/night. seems like a good choice for you though, best of luck

    Thank you for sharing. I have been feeling the exact same way. I’m a birth doula and birth assistant and have been wanting to attend a direct entry midwifery school. But I’m a wife and a mom, and the more I think about the on call hours and how burnt out the midwife I work with is… it turns me off from the profession. And I feel bad because more midwives of color are desperately needed and like you I love everything about birth. Plus all the midwives I know are divorced 😳. Is that coincidence or their partners can’t handle their excessive work load?

    Lol “ um im not here for that” I totally feel you. I chose my career path based solely on my home life. Because my life is my family. Marriage, 3 kids, football, track, soccer, birthday parties, vacations etc… so i am a OR Nurse i work mon-fri 0700-3:30 no weekends no holidays. I take call which means i stay and finish any case running past 3:30. And call only for weekends& holidays but we are not a level 1 trauma so being called is very very rare! I live in Florida. Making great pay with that schedule. ( the call is the money maker) So i was wanting to be a cardiovascular NP specifically but wondering if its worth it?

      Baljinder Sonia Singh I would contact the Professional Association for CNMs in the states you’re considering moving to in the USA. Up here in Canada we have BSc in Midwifery programs that pretty much transfer to a CNM once the appropriate exams are written. Also, Canada is pretty open to midwives in most or all provinces.

      Each state in the US has different requirements, some states require that you become a Certified Nurse Midwife or you can't practice as a midwife and others allows midwifery without a nursing license. I agree with the comment to check with the CNM organization. States that have birthing clinics and allow home births will most likely allow CNM's to practice without being a registered nurse.

      There are so many avenues to midwifery and you have to have your boundaries set from the beginning. I’m going to school to be a homebirth direct entry midwife and I’ve talked with so many midwives about this route. How busy you are is a direct relation to the number of clients you take.

    I think it's great thay you are beinf objective about your interests and needs compared to the reality of true midwifery. Babies come at all hours of the day. It is unfair to expect the clients who have spend months building relationships with their midwives to let a stranger deliver their baby at the 11th hour because of "bankers hours" expectations. I think midwives should stick to the traditional service they provide for their clients from prenatal to birth (actually being there!). That being said....midwives should get paid BANK so they can afford SEVERAL VACATIONS , affors to have domestic help at home so they don't burn out from the heavy work that they do.

    Not to be rude but your heart is not in the right place you are not concerned about babies and moms you are just talking about yourself so you should definitely find something else to do and your not going to see a real birth under a OBGYN they are surgeons!!!! Did you hear that surgeons also you are discouraging other potential midwives if all you care about is money midwives are so needed right now more than ever and I respect these woman that put their lives on the line to keep real birth alive and they care about babies and moms woman are tired of getting major surgery to have a baby that’s not birth that’s surgery so before you complain think about what if it was you needing a midwife and needing that type of love and support and outside of hospital midwives are completely different than hospital midwives there’s a huge difference people are so selfish these days and we complain too much as a people we need to do better but it starts with the person in the mirror

      Kim Sims thank you for watching. Although I’m not sure you watched the entire video as we agree on a couple things. When I have kids one day I hope to be cared for by a midwife who loves what she does. I’ve worked with midwives (and OBs) who are unhappy in their career and that reflects in their care. No woman deserves mediocre patient care. Have a blessed rest of your day.

      I'm sorry, but why would you assume she doesn't care for women and babies just because she doesn't like certain aspects of the profession? Nobody is selfish for wanting a decent salary and work life balance. No one goes into any profession for completely altruistic reasons.
      There are plenty of compassionate burnt out nurses and midwives that end up leaving because of the stress and yes the compassion fatigue like she mentioned. Sometimes not being appreciated with a proper salary and working conditions. Nobody is obligated to be a sacrificial lamb for these specialities. You can care for others while also caring for yourself.
      She decided that it didn't pay enough for her considering what it takes to become one and she didn't like the work life balance. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.

      It's a tough industry. Unfortunately, our USA healthcare system favors epidural, C-section, and so on on natural birth. Don't forget United States has the highest rate of stillborn. It's unfortunate what we have in the country really pushes down midwife careers and favors other types of careers that helps pharmaceutical companies to grow bigger. and that's the reality like nurse aggz is deciding to not pursue this type of career because it's very limited and discouraging.

      At the end of the day it’s her life I hate when ppl say money doesn’t matter when you got grown ppl responsibilities to do yes it matters!! And also whether you have a spouse and kid’s or not shit I wanna a life I wanna be able to travel, go out to a party be spontaneous and go out of town for the weekend but you can’t do that being a midwife because you have ppl waiting to give birth and she’s not discouraging anyone though if she did discourage someone maybe midwife was never for them in the first place as a np or a pa or dr there are somethings you need to consider
