- Y'all been waiting for it, and here he is! The Al, the myth, the legend, Allosaurus. One of the most famous, most well known and most important theropod dinosaurs, Allosaurus has been a staple of dinosaur media for almost a century and a half. Having the destination of being I’ve or the first large theropods known from relatively good skeletal material, it has been instrumental in teaching us about these charismatic carnivores. Naturally, a dinosaur with a history as long as this has quite the story to tell about not just the distant past, but the more recent past of the study of our field. Join the Crew as we sing the ballad of this legendary predator.

Paleontologists: NOOO, you cant be decently sampled the fossil record is notably incomplete!!
Allosaurus: Hehe! Preservation Bias Go BRRRRRR!!!!
That's the real reason why it's the Different Lizard.
Amelia: "I like this design!!"
James: "I don't like this design..."
Scott: "I like this design, except for this, this and this. This 3 last things I hate"
Alex: "whatever" (gives a rank)

It also happens that when Amelia doesn't like a design, that James just so happens to also like it. Like fire and ice.
Unless it's Dreadnoughtus.

And yet he has never seen such b******* before.Hence why his name means different lizard

I originally hated the main Allosaurus model and thought it looked nothing like the Allosaurus I knew. Then I saw a picture of an Allosaurus jimmadseni skull for the first time and was stunned at how well they matched up. Turns out I didn't "know" the right Allosaurus. Now I love the base version.
What did the "Allosaurus you knew" look like?
@@Clownfan137I was more familiar with Allosaurus fragillis, so the skull of the base model initially just didn't look right to me. It looked too low and long until I realized that's exactly how A. jimmadseni is shaped.
@@colterhall2172Fragilis is hands down the best species though (I swear I'm not biased).
I went through that with Majungasaurus 😂
Never before have I seen a dinosaur with such "Main Character" energy.
I love allosaurus so much.
I liked so that James will never say “Go brr” again

Good. Join the Allosaur side.
Scientists: "Allosaurus, how'd you survive getting a crotch shot from a stegosaurus' thagomizer?!"😵💫😵
Allosaurus:.... "I'm just built different."😎
I read this in David Martinez's voice and I don't regret it.
As for a headcount of the remaining animals as of the Tapejara episode we have two Hadrosaurs, one Pachycephalosaur (of dubious affinities), one Sauropod, three Pterosaurs, three marine reptiles, and nine Theropods.
AMNH 5753 was partly described and almost fully illustrated by Chure in his PHD thesis.

My fossil resource management class visited, and wrote a management list for, the CLDQ back in 2017. I was sadly unable to go but I did have fun working on the list. I remember those sheds being quite the talking point.
Also fun fact, because it got mentioned here, is that a Stokesosaurus needs glasses in order to paint
Speaking of built different, the built different pin arrived a couple days ago and I am LOVING it. I strongly recommend the skeleton crew pins as they are some of the best, high quality pins I have encountered! And those rubber plugs make them super comfortable too if you're only wearing a shirt! Very happy with the product :) ❤❤❤ (the built different sticker that comes with the pin now permanently lives on my mario kart wii wheel)
BABR Allosaurus is literally just an Saurophagonax that they were too scared to call Saurophagonax in my head cannon
Bakker first proposed the “Hatchet” idea for allosaurus in 1998. Great video :)
🦖 Shout out to the continued great additions to the videos, Crew! Visuals etc really help the audience connect with the topic at hand, highlighting specific areas on bones etc, loving seeing all the extra stuff that we're just learning about
Man, fragilis is not a fitting species name, Allosaurus can be categorized as literally too angry to die
Allosaurus RAGEilis
But they do seem to be get hurt constantly.
The Frontier Allosaurus is my favorite species in the game. I will not speak of the other.
It’s not a frontier design. Both are movie designs
@@ItsMeLec the first one was inspired by the one from fallen kingdom but in fallen kingdom we only see the juvenile version.
This is such a great video, allosaurus is by far my favorite dinosaur. I hope that I get to work on this animal in the near future. I have some biomechanical questions about jimmadseni.
I come to these episodes to learn all that I can about these animals, and I stay for the hourly roasting of dinosaurs in general 🤣
LETSSS GOOOOOO THEY ARE COVERING MY FAVORITE DINOSAURRR
I have been waiting for this episode since the diplodocus one a year ago but the episodes not over I didn’t hear no bell ring….

5:25 I definitely thought that was based on the Zallinger mural. Yes, sir, I definitely didn't think it was based on Greymon. Yep! Yep! Yep!
Every time I hear about Alex’s high school studies, my suburban southerner mind is convinced he grew up in Renaissance Florence or something. Brother had opportunities to take Greek, Latin, and Mandarin courses and do science experiments with live horseshoe crabs, like where was all this stuff in my city? The coastal elite frfr
IIRC the differentiation of lumbar vertebrae in Cynodonts started LONG before nursing is likely to have evolved. Thrinzaxadon already had a pretty distinct lumbar region and its very unlikely that it woulld had nurse its juveniles. Hell its even proposed that the lack of Diphidont teeth and determined growth in animals like Sinocodon meant that they didn't nurse their young, and that thing was almost fully mammalian in body plan.
This might actually be one of my favourite SC vids, for the simple reason I believe they touched on all the things that make Allosaurus such an interesting animal, and also one of my top 5 dinos. I especially loved the segment where Scott spoke on the Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. Learning about the fossil evidence we have on sites like that and specimens like Big Al give us a genuine glimpse into how these large predators might have lived their lives hundred of millions of years ago and that's so cool to me. This really reminded me of why I love learning about dinosaurs! 😊
At this point I’d recommend that if it doesn’t appear in the next fifteen episodes (Before Tyrannosaurus) then Spinosaurus should be removed from the wheel and moved to be the last species for a few reasons. 1. It would probably be the best species narratively to finish with, it’s a canon species that’s famous both in and out of Jurassic Park. 2. It’s been pretty heavily suggested to appear in Rebirth which would definitely tie in well to the end of the JWE2 rankings. 3. Having it at the end would be ideal for specifically dating the episode as “The Skeleton Crew talks about Spinosaurus as of January 2025” when it inevitably has new papers changing its appearance and lifestyle.
I have now officially watched all of your videos! I stream on my tv while I work and it’s such a pleasure to get to know a field I’ve loved my whole life to this level. You guys are the best. Thank you
i will never get tired of the allosaurus never has seen ..... meme😍
The timing is interesting considering I've recently run into 1/5 of the crew because of some work I'm doing with Yale's (Princeton's actually) _Allosaurus._ While visiting, I came across one of the skeletal casts in the collections that I thought was gonna go on display in the new Peabody, and apparently that was the plan, but it turns out it was apparently too small to be impressive, especially considering that they wanted to have it attacking the _Stegosaurus._ A suggestion was made to depict it as an enrollee at the Jurassic School of Hard Knocks and getting beat up by said _Stegosaurus_ in the same way the _Ceratosaurus_ at the Smithsonian is mounted, but that idea got shot down.
Was cool to meet you!

Frontier design is so good ❤️Glad you guys gave it the ranking it deserves

The way James basically went "Oh no! Anyway..." makes this part even funnier
Antrodemus is a pretty cool name indeed. Would totally make for a cool Twitter username too, don't you think?
Yeah, sounds pretty geeky though-
the visceral descriptions of the sauropod trap and rotting Allosaurus soup sure are Something to listen to before lunch lmao /hj

I haven't seen the video yet (Though I will be watching it soon) but I just wanted to comment seeing as the video is still relatively new to say that I found your channel a bit ago (Though I think I might have seen one or two of your videos a bit back) and it is absolutely amazing, all of your videos are really entertaining and informative. Also do you have any tips for someone who's interested in potentially going into palaeontology someday?
1:14:30 Guys it’s bite force is only twice that of a lion. Maybe that means it couldn’t hunt.
To this day my favorite dinosaur. I remember not being in love with the design in the first game, but the port over to jwe2 is awesome, really does thread that needle between realistic and stylized. The 2022 version is also good, but I have to agree with the issue on the tiny hands. That’s part of what’s so cool about allosaurus, it’s big beefy mitts.
Allosaurus was my favorite dinosaurs for years when I was younger, then I realized Microraptor existed. I still love Allosaurus in my heart though, it’ll never leave just like the many, many, hamalocephale in my basement
"Swamp where partially submerged giants lie wailing as scavengers eat their still-living flesh" and "Flood Pit of Eternal Rot where the putrefying remains of great hunters, too vile even for maggots, fester and blossom with mold" are both very much extremely levels designed by Miyazaki Hidetaka.
I'm oddly fond of the BaBR Allosaurus. It's not perfect by any means, but it hits a bunch of nice spots (plus the short itself is just brilliant).
The couple of things that I dislike from Frontier's are the crests, which are too streamlined. To the point where the top of head looks almost too uniform. And then the arms which look cartoonishly huge, as if it had two excavators attached (in contrast BaBR's are small-ish, but look less out of place).
I'm also not a fan of the mouth/dentition of either. Frontier's looks as if it had a massive overbite while BaBR's has the trademark sickly needle cushion that all the JW Big Bad Dinos get.
All that being said, I agree with you all in everything else. The squishy bits look particularly good in Frontier's version. Props to them as usual!
Wait, is AMNH 666 literally nicknamed Devilboy.
That's amazing.
That's a Crew-specific nickname!
@@skeletoncrew8122 You better make it official.
I remember reading this awesome Reddit post (rare) about how the FK Allosaur is objectively superior to the BoBR Allo model and I have to agree
That wheel legitimately starting to get small
Allosaurus "I Didnt Hear No Bell" jimmadseni
In an alternate universe, the most famous specimen would be "Big Andy"
"Androdemus had never seen such bullshit before."
I was scared they werent gonna do it, but the title is as it should be.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! THE ROMUALDO CREW WILL BE BACK!!!!!
What's funny is that I've heard of A. jimmadseni back in the mid 2000's from seeing an drawing by Todd Marshall back in the day. The idea of another species of Allosaurus existed, but there wasn't a lot of data to support it's existence. Especially since at this time, the American Allosaurs were all being repurposed into A. fragillis due to the unnecessary splitting of genera from a decade prior.
Also, I actually love this model in the game. Most people complained about this depiction of Allosaurus since Fallen Kingdom because thry felt the limbs were too long and the crests were too pointed, so the production team of the Jurassic World series made the idea that those versions were juveniles and redesigned a bulkier form as the "true adult." I never liked that change, honestly.
At the end of this series I'd like to see a showcase of the different formation maps with all the correct(ish) animals in them
Hey, that allosaurus pack hunting thing. At least for me, I've heard Allosaurus referred to "The Lion of the Jurassic" so that could be where it comes from. At least in my opinion, 90% of their food is multi-ton, well armored and very deadly animals, so it makes sense to hunt in a group, even 3 or 4 individuals could work together and bring down a stegosaurus or diplodocus.
I loved the conversations about the quarries. I think it would make a great series of videos ijn the future. Talking about the quarries, their history and significance as well as the animals and knowledge that could be learned from there. It would also open more times to these discussion noit just the JW game. I can imagine for example Dr. Napoli and the crew talking about the finding of the 20ish Albertosaurus in Canada and its significance. Anyway thank you very much for this video. I really enjoyed Allosaurus.
Never knew the allosaurus was so big until I saw an adult skeleton compared to juveniles. And the hands jesus christ man...
There is a real "strange lizard", by the way - Paraxenisaurus. It's a deinocheirid, so the name fits automatically, way better than it would for this guy.
1:17:45 Interestingly, Andrea Cau's phylogeny in his 2024 paper on "A Unified Framework for Predatory Dinosaur Macroevolution" places Saurophaganax as a metriacanthosaurid closely related to Yangchuanosaurus. This may not pan out, but it is interesting nonetheless. The currently described specimens are not that good anyway to really know what it actually looked like, so who knows.
Allosaurus is the main character. Idk why, but that's how I feel every time I see it.
Allosaurus had never seen such good shit before
I'll admit, the 2022 Allosaurus model looked a lot more menacing and imposing in BaBR than in-game. It's a shame since I was kind of looking forward to it when it was going to be released, oh well. The OG model is still quite neat.
I also want to say something about something Scott said a while back in another video, where he said he liked the dominion allo partially because you can tell it was jimmadseni, but I would like to counter that there's been a lot of just general theropod reconstructions around where the shape of the mouth is just flat like a lizard instead of curving where they should curve, especially in pre - jurassic park recons and in stock photos, and that the dominion allo looking like jimmadseni might simply be due to jimmadseni being one of the dinosaurs that actually had a flat ass lizard jawline and not contradicting with this trend.
I've been waiting for this
Upland animal mention! 📢🗣️
We had to learn Italian at my school in Australia. No choice in the matter. 10 years later, I can count to 10 in Italian (as well as a smattering of food stuffs)
Saurophaganax is real in my heart
The Cau 2024 "A Unified Framework for Predatory Dinosaur Macroevolution" paper, Saurophaganax oddly gets recovered as a metriacanthosaurid closely related to Yangchuanosaurus.
One of the coolest theropods who needs more respect and media appearances that don't try to push the hatchet hunting method or show it bullying Ceratosaurus and throwing itself under the feet of Camarasaurus.
1:21:02 quote of the episode
Cool video.
Can’t wait to watch this with a friend that loves allosaurus
Scott story about the combat infamy Allo reminds me when i did the same thing 😭 it was just for fun too, i maxed out its attack, the others didnt have a chance
It’s irritating that Allosaurus one of the coolest Theropod Dinosaurs, the Mick Foley of Theropods, can take all sorts of beating & still keeps going, yet it has one of the lamest names “Different Lizard”
Especially compared to its contemporaries Torvosaurus “Savage Lizard” & Saurophaganax “Lord of the Lizard Eaters”

Allosaurus It's a Hard Knock Life edit...
I'm curious if Allosaurus excessive injuries are just a thing for large apex therapods. Like don't most Trex have some injuries as well?
They cannot in fact twist and shout. Well they can twist and then shout in horrible pain because they're not supposed to be twisting in the first place.
Allosaurus jamesnapoli....
would be cool I think
A few words from a completely inexperienced highschool kid about the uh allosaurus head debate
One, does having a skull that can tolerate more applied force than it can bite really mean that it's there just for biting? maybe it's just retained from an ancestral state(eocarch have a reinforced skull, not sure if this is a derived feature) and no longer necessary or maybe it supported actions not related to predation.
Two, I can't access the 2001 paper since it's paywalled but I read a 2005 paper by the same author, and it makes a few points that should be taken into consideration(note, I haven't read any of the other FEA papers that involve allo skulls). First of all, the older paper did the analysis with the skull as one big hunk of bone(didn't take into account that the skull was in fact not one big bone), and with sutures taken into consideration the upper jaw and skull apparently generally splays outwards during biting. I have no idea what this means behaviour wise, if it means anything, but nevertheless the skull seems to be as strong if not stronger than the 2001 proposal even with the sutures(they say they don't know if it strengthens or weakens the skull but the von mises stress during biting is literally near zero). The failure point of the skull when overloaded is apparently the condyle of the quadrate, which means this motherfucker would literally tear its jaw off before breaking anything else, not accounting for muscles and tendons that would also contribute to the strength of the head.
On a maybe(?) unrelated note, if the skull is to permanently deform, according to that study, it would basically twist upwards and out like takeout chopsticks if you tried to use it to grab something too wide and hard, which makes for a funny tom - and jerryesque scene if it was in a cartoon.
My headcanon is that allos would bite and then shove their head inwards with their exaggerated neck muscles... would be funny I think
When I was a kid I had a very old hand-me-down dinosaur book that insisted Antrodemus meant 'nightmare dragon.' Kinda glad it didn't as that would make me mourn the loss of the Antrodemus name.
I personally use the 2023 version as like an older or alpha in my enclosures along side the frontier version.
I personally love both Allosaurus models. I like the base game model a little more overall, but I also do like the skull design of the JWD Allo - minus the jugal and surrangular teeth and over used the crocodile-like osteoderm plating (though we can pretend they're just feature scales/scutes).
I'm not much of a fan of the base model's patterns, most of them look more like a neo spray paint job than a natural pattern.
I love the JWD model's patterns, but I wish its patterns had splashes of color on the lacrimals. I don't get why the game/model artists would have missed giving the lacrimals some color with their JWD Allosaurus and Giganotosaurus alternate patterns?
I wish we could make an Allosaurus reminiscent of the ones that Matt Hall designed for The Lost World 1997 PlayStation game, or the Kenner TLW toy that came with the med/dissection lab.
I’m personally not crazy about the pattern colors on the JWE design, otherwise that’s a top-tier design in my book
