Sure. Everybody talks about the "good old days" when the good old days weren't really any better. You were just 15 years old so your problems weren't as big as they got as you grew older.
Andrew McCarthy comes across as such a nice guy, similar to the characters he plays in films. I have watched most of his movies, followed series 'Kingdom Hospital'. Respect to him.
My favorite with him and Jamie Gertz and Robert Downey Jr is still the cautionary tale of Less Than Zero.. Such a classic movie that is very underated!!
Love Andrew! I especially like when he plays the bongos and sings "Respect" in St. Elmos Fire . It shows a whole other side to him you don't get to see until "...Bernies" I crushed on him for sure.❤
So Blaine was written as a preppie jock... And Duckie was written for RDJ, and was supposed to be the friend she falls for in the end. But Hughes hired the guy she liked as the guy she was supposed to ditch, and for the guy she was supposed to choose he replaced Downey with Cryer. A simple decision that altered everything we know.
Andrew McCartney, was an incredible actor in the John Hughes in the eightes movies, in Class, St Elmos Fire & Pretty in Pink, he has such a presence, especially as Blaine, in Pretty in Pink this rich kid, with his vulnerability & trying to overcome peer pressure, to defy his friends & family! He is trying to keep everyone happy, to loose the girl he Loves! Against all odds, her courage & strength brings them together, happily ever after!
I always had crush on him since the 80's u can tell he is so sweet down to earth adorable nice sensitive he still is dreamy i still have a crush always.
Andrew mentions Heaven Help Us and he's right...it's such a fantastic movie. Definitely one of the most underrated movies of the 80s. He is very underrated as well.
@Ariana White I agree with all of that! John Cusack and Alan Ruck were both great in that movie. LOL @ Cusack with the cigarette! The movie is very well written, directed and acted. I like the bar scene where the girl plays the prank on McCarthy with the quarter...and for me, the funniest scene is where Rob Lowe is dressed as Jesus. LOL I laugh every single time at the dialogue!
That's pretty smart of him to recognize people latch on to him & the film bc it's really about their nostalgia & it reminds them of their youth. I was a baby when this came out so I saw it on cable but my youth was the 90s & 2000s. I love the 90s so if I hear an old grunge song I havent heard in years it just stops me in my tracks.
Love Pretty In Pink & John Hughes movies. He's really a nice guy. Very easy to talk to about his recollection of his broad work of films. Met him in 2014 S.A. Comic Con. He's really tall and down to earth. 💙
It's a shame that this guy's true acting talent isn't recognized. I've seen him in several things, post-teen roles, in which he has been fabulous. One that stands out is a movie whose name I forget. He plays an introverted piano player who is training a singer. I think it was "Anything But Love" but not absolutely sure. He was on a recently cancelled strange show where he played an accused child molester (the show was cancelled before we found out whether he was guilty). He was great. Countless other roles. I don't know why his career didn't take off. Probably not pushy enough for Hollywood, or maybe he refused to sexually harass women or something.
I totally agree with you. I think it must be too difficult to stay on the crest of the wave in Hollywood, and always get the best roles, you probably have to give in dark situations, and those who don’t reach continued popularity are those who prefer to stay in place. I think that is the case with actors like him, and like many others with great talent.
Gracias.
Ironically, I just watched Pretty In Pink a few hours ago... and I must say, I do like it better than The Breakfast Club. I also gotta research now, cause of what Andrew says here about how he got the part last minute - I've heard the ending of the movie was changed from its original version (as well as the song by Orchestral Manoeuvres), and I'm now wondering if that had something to with going with Andrew over a more jock-type actor. Yeah... Pretty in Pink is a classic, for sure!
meg if you mean the ending of 'pretty in pink', Molly ringwald hated Jon cryer and found him very annoying, and wanted andie to end up with Blaine. (Which I agree. Duckie was SO annoying)
yes, but Molly was pissed at times during filming because Andrew (admittedly) was drunk most of the filming. and 80S. Kinda sounds like Molly might have been a bit of a biz netch. Deservedly or not.
rock n roller well I guess on how you look at it. Now having seen the film and watching andrew's interviews, he describes the film as 'a girl just wanting to go to a dance'. DID YOU READ THE SCRIPT AT ALL? I mean, I can see why he was drunk if he really thought the film was that trivial, but he totally missed the point, IMO.
Test previews of the film with audiences found that they did not like the ending and so it was changed. OMD song Goddess of Love ( on The Pacific Age album and a good track) was replaced with If You Leave when John Hughes said the ending had to be rearranged. They wrote and recorded If You Leave in twenty four hours and it went on to reach number 4 in America. Sadly, it was not a hit in their native Britain where the hits had started to dry up- it peaked just outside the top 40.
WHERE are you getting THESE “ NEWS” FROM??? I had NEVER heard that Molly didn’t get along with Jon on the set..or Anthony being drunk..WHERE ARE YOUR FACTS PEOPLE???? STOP GOSSIPING BULLSHIT!
Pretty in Pink resonates for me when he breaks Andy’s heart. When she yells at him in the hallway ... and of course the beginning when they are in the record store
I laugh so hard every time I watch Weekend at Bernie's.... I even got my kids to watch it.... They didn't want to at first but it didn't take long for them to all be laughing and watching every minute of it... Even made me pause it when they needed a bathroom break.... LOL
Very well said how he describes how the movie affected people it was like they wanted but they didn’t get it I mean I am 52 years old and I still watch that movie when it comes on I actually own it VHS and DVD but whenever I see it coming on I have to watch it 💕💘💖💗💓💞💝
Loved him in all those 80s movies! My favorite was pretty in pink though. Wish I was Molly Ringwald in that movie, lucky girl. I think his smile just lures you in. 😙. He's not bad looking now, but I prefer the younger him!
I love this wish I could meet Andrew such a wonderful actor I would have loved to have been in Jacklyn Bissets place then or Molly Ringwald place be still my heart ❤🤗!!!!
Can he take over Bourdain's Parts Unknown? Still sad about him gone but I am thinking whether Andrew can be next Bourdain... And Andrew aged well. Anyway CNN please pay attention to him.
the 1980s were absolutly incredible years.i could stay in that era for the next 100 years!
I know right? If ever a time machine existed, I’d go back to 1985 and stay there.
@@alexblaze8878 Me too!!!
My absolute favorite decade, I completely agree
Bring me with you guys.
I agree! The 80's were the best!
He is still cute now and still has a nice smile.loved him in pretty in pink, mannequin, and weekend at Bernie's.
And St. Elmo's Fire!!!!
He’s a member of the “Fine Vintage Wine Club” to my 80s teenage self then😂🍷🎩
He’s the most underrated actor of our generation(I’m 10 months older).Great and sincere in every film he made!
God he’s so handsome
The Pretty in Pink soundtrack is still one of the best movie soundtracks. I still have my original cassette tape!
Too kool, you have a cassette tape ❤️👍
That and the OST for The Lost Boys. 2 iconic 80s soundtracks. Bought both on vinyl when they came.out. I still listen to them regularly.
I love how he embraces how important his movies mean to many...many hate talking about old films...
A brilliant actor. He came from a generation that made anything seem possible. Tenacity was a virtue. Great interview. ❤️
BRILLANT ? How about Good.
Still has such a pretty smile
He’s really smart, he’s putting himself in the shoes of his audience. What a kind man.
Pretty in Pink is one of my all time favourite movies...I loved it💖
He was so handsome in Pretty in Pink.
Andrew McCarthy is a great actor, Pretty in Pink is a classic 💖
Nice to see an interview with Andrew McCarthy, I grew up watching the movies he was in. Legend.
I had a major crush on him
He is still fine
Had all his posters
Love all his movies
I saw him years ago in a stage play in D.C. This must have been early 2000s. Really nice performance. I've always liked him in movies too.

"Yearning for a past that never was."
Wow. That makes sense when you stop and think about it.
This guy gets it too. "Nostalgic for a past that never was," is usually how it rolls around in my head.
Sure. Everybody talks about the "good old days" when the good old days weren't really any better. You were just 15 years old so your problems weren't as big as they got as you grew older.
The 80s was an optimistic decade full of experimentation. You could try anything with your hair or clothes. That's what I liked.
My daughter is 12. We both love Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. It's so nice that I can share these with her from my youth.
I almost forgot about that movie. It did seem underated. I was so jealous of Jamie Gertz! Haha!😁
Love Andrew! I especially like when he plays the bongos and sings "Respect" in St. Elmos Fire . It shows a whole other side to him you don't get to see until "...Bernies" I crushed on him for sure.❤
Duckie (John Cryer): "Blaine????? That's not even a name!!!! (Frustrated) That is a major appliance. That's not a name!!!!! Lol!!!!!!!!
Andrew McCarthy who played Blane
He's aged well
Hot!
Hmm I would disagree about Jon Cryer, but Andrew looks great
Decent dye job

You make a teen rom com sound like a gladiator equal.
he seems like such a sweetheart! !
He IS a sweetheart!

I'll have to check it out. Been sorta meaning to look into his work a little deeper.
@Ariana White It really is a great movie!
@Ariana White Class was a great movie, too! Andrew McCarthy is such an underrated actor! What was your favorite scene in Class?

The 1980's is a year that has wonderful music
Everytime I hear OMD my mind goes back to pretty in pink and I feel very happy . I love this movie and always will.
Same here.
I was so in love with him in the 80's!
My huge crush in the 80’s. Glad he is still around and doing well.
Wow I love that they cast him even though they thought they wanted something completely different. Also love that they listened to Molly.
That's pretty smart of him to recognize people latch on to him & the film bc it's really about their nostalgia & it reminds them of their youth. It also resonates because it had an awesome soundtrack that you didn't often see then.
I love Andrew McCarthy in Pretty in Pink ❤ so charming
Wow. He's a bright Boy.
My generational movies too.
Thank you for this interview.
Love Pretty In Pink & John Hughes movies. He's really a nice guy. Very easy to talk to about his recollection of his broad work of films. Met him in 2014 S.A. Comic Con. He's really tall and down to earth.

Molly said “that’s the kind of boy I could fall in love with!” And then… we all did. ❤❤❤
His movie! Mannequin with Kim Catrall
I was about 8yrs when st elmos fire came out and I fell in love with Andrew .. everyone else was crazy for Rob Low
What a truly graceful and kind man! Love Andrew McCarthy!

2:38 Very gracious and smooth there. Classy dude.
Still he boils my blood to this day!! Sooo excited watching his 80s stuff
That Smile...omg
What a thoughtful, intelligent and charming guy. So authentic. Makes his work as an actor all the more meaningful and enjoyable.
Loved him back then & still love him now 😍
He aged gracefully , my fave .. so with Rob Lowe ❤️

Hollywood hasn't affected him. He seems nice and doesn't have a big head. Decent guy.
Andrew is still so handsome and aged beautifully, he has a depth too him,a really special quality too him.

"Aww, get your ass outta here, it's too hot!"
Eu era APAIXONADA pelo Andrew Mcarth!!! Na verdade, ainda sou!!!🤣🤣😍😍😍😍😍
Ladybird (2018) is a modern coming-of-age movie that should not be missed.
Cool One I didn’t last ten minutes into that movie. I wanted to punch ladybird in the face.
You can still hear that youthful voice somewhere in there
Pretty in pink wouldn’t be the same without Andrew McCarthy. I’m so so glad Molly picked him. It wouldn’t be as iconic without him.
If you haven't watched mannequin go and watch it right now!!!
Is good to see he's aging well I like his performance in Maneekin as well.
They didnt mention the movie Less Than Zero. Andrew was awesome along with RDJ in that movie.
I love him! I loved Mannequin too!

The movie Class (Andrew McCarthy, Jacqueline Bissett) also starred John Cusack in his first movie.
He’s still sooooo cute.

He makes an excellent astute point!

Awwww he seems stressed he's such good looking man good actor
