Its got all the qualities of a good show he's always talking about good character development, the jokes are funny, even the most insignificant of side characters are memorable can hit on all of your emotions, and anyone can relate it to their childhood in some way, sure it might have gotten a little too preachy at times but not in a way that beat you over the head with their message like others do sometimes.
The reason why I like Arnold growing up was because he was the Straight Guy who's also the Good Guy and is always there to help you, if you ask (and sometimes when you don't). He's the sage of their class, despite him being brought up by his senile grandma, crazy granpa and eccentric tenants.

I agree. I think he'd like Hey Arnold if he just sat down and watched it. I think for a while he hadn't watched Avatar the Last Airbender either and when he did watch it, he very much enjoyed it.
Rugrats actually had some really complex stories, like when Chucky learned about how his mother died, and wen Angelica had to realize that her bratty behavior had repercussions. Sure it has its duds where it was like "durr we're babies watch us baby talk", but it was and still is one of my favorite Nick shows.

Yeah, it was one of those "kids being kids and doing everyday things" shows that showed up everywhere in the late 90s and early 2000s. What Hey Arnold did was tackle mature themes in a way that kids could understand. And even then, it still manages to have some good jokes. I wish he'd chosen to go for a later episode, though. Season 1 was very much the experimental season, figuring out what worked and what didn't. It had some amazing episodes, but also more clunkers than later seasons. After that, the show started leveling out with consistently good episodes, although there were several holdovers in Season 2. But once Season 3 hit, it was one gem after another. And of course, Season 4 had the legendary Helga On The Couch, one of the best character explorations I've ever seen in a cartoon. I was doing a course in Psychology in college when I saw this episode, and we talked about a lot of things like defense mechanisms and development of the brain. You can see from this episode how Helga uses defense mechanisms, and the fact that her feelings towards Arnold are unhealthy (due to her dependence on them) but understandable (because he was the only person she could look to for emotional support).

Logan Cascio While Rocko and Spongebob are both fantastic, they are nothing compared to the masterpiece that is.. INVADER ZIM!!!!!!!!!! I adore that NickToon, it's what I grew up with and I'm so hyped for its upcoming movie
Unfortunately, i grew up when Nick was just starting to go down hill. I mostly watched Nickelodeon's sit coms, such as Drake & Josh, and i also watched George Lopez as a kid. Most of the cartoons i grew up with were on Cartoon Network and Disney channel. I stopped watching Nick after Spongebob changed writers. Never looked back since.
I watched George Lopez too, but I probably grew up at the same time you did, and Nick had good cartoons back then: CatDog, Rugrats, Invader Zim, Chalkzone, SpongeBob, Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, etc.
Ah yes, I too remember the great Australian Stereotype War. The name-calling of 'Bloody Drongos' and "Fakkin' Dickheads". Dingos eating babies. Boomerangs flying towards the fields of battle only to turn around and come back. Cats and dogs living together. All the while, a sole Kookaburra looked upon the the battlefield, upon the bloodshed and stubbies... and laughed his fakkin' arse off.
Fun fact: I didn't watch that Doug cartoon because *first grade me* thought the multi-color skins made them look stupid. I hated the Simpsons at first for the same reason.
Plus there's a scene he in a episode where it's proven as an undershirt when he did one of the classic childhood mistakes of putting one's shirt on backwards
I have issues with the Doug theme too. My second high school choir teacher used to hear it in the morning as his theme song when he woke up in the morning.
14:48 oh really? The drama I remember the show dealt with are childhood neglect, alcoholism, environmentalism, and coping with missing parents. Clearly the Nostalgia Critic didn’t watch the show as he claimed he did. Also that’s not a plaid shirt. That is a plaid shirt underneath Arnold’s sweater, and they didn’t live in the Bronx. They lived in a fictional city.
It's okay, Doug. My name is Pat, so people would always call me Patty Mayonnaise. (Also, Patty o'Furniture, fat Pat, it's Pat from SNL, and more recently, starfish.)
For me, watching Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law as a kid was like being high. Especially since all the episodes I saw then had Black Vulcan in them. That voice. MY GOD.
For me watching Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was like being high. Vice Terhune was hot AF. I have no idea why him of all characters (probably from the arcade game where he looked hotter), but JESUS CHRIST ON BROADWAY THAT VOICE UNGHHHHH. The rest of the show was a surreal fever dream, but I'm 42, and I still wanna end up in Vice's bed. (I'm just making this up.)
6:38 I feel you. I happen to have a last name that's simmular to Sheriff Cally's. I still attend school. One kid even made me a badge. God isn't life great.

***** Oh shut up. You really think I don't know that this is from 2009? How old do you think I am? Fucking 10? *smh* Merely pointing out a coincidence, with the presidential elections and all.
It's actually set around middle school/junior high years. The Disney syndication later has them in high school. Doug and his friends are supposed to be early teens from what I understand, while his sister Judy is like late teens. It's all irrelevant now since I doubt the Critic wants to relive much about the show, but that's what I recall.
Hey Arnold, just for the colour palette and music alone, it is so beautiful Jim Lang is a credit to that show, the music makes you feel like your there, in the streets with Arnold and the gang it is s hard to explain
I feel like Doug didn't give a proper review of Hey Arnold and only skimmed through the first episodes of season 1. If he had watched some episodes from the later seasons, he would see that this show has good moral values, interesting well-rounded characters, great humor that doesn't dumb down to little kids, and has some of the most emotional moments in an animated series. All those qualities make the show hold up to this day by its ever-growing popularity, and the fact that Nickelodeon and its creator Craig Bartlett are making a TV movie that will serve as its long-awaited closure to the series that ended on a cliffhanger years ago. Walter Banasiak gave a much better review on his Top 5 Best 90s Nicktoons video, and you can guess which came at number one.
I actually appreciate that he didn’t just regurgitate a bunch of bs that he read online and was honest about only watching the 1st ep. if you notice, he usually doesn’t review cartoons he didn’t watch as a kid, unless it’s something current. Instead, he lets his colleagues who are younger review those other shows. All I’m saying is it could’ve been worse. Hey Arnold was the shit, though! I was 9 when it came out so it was perfect for me.
I know people pick on NC now and days, but these earlier episodes have such perfect comedic timing, great memorable bits, and funny jokes. These will never get old for me.
Harvey Beaks doesn't even air that much from where i'm from which is sad because it's the best show Nick's had in nearly 8 years. Loud House is also good.
Shiny Sneasel It's actually pretty good. It's colorful, funny, and simple. But this show does so many things right and it's definitely more worth while to watch than Spongebob (Today).
Along with Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Star vs The Forces of Evil, Legend of Korra, Wonder Over Yonder, Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, The Amazing world of Gumball, We Bare Bears, etc. There are plenty of good cartoons on these days that are just as good, if not, better then the shows of the 90's and early 2000's if you just look around a bit.
Doug, I know you dislike Doug, but.... Imagine sharing the name of the STUDIO. Where they repeat the name over, and over, and over again. "Nick nick nick, nick nick nick nick..."
I just noticed this joke is pretty funny in hindsight: "I used to be a man, but I thought my voice was too feminine so I changed." Turns out the Bigheads' kid is trans. How ironic.
Boy do I love Nick Toons! I remember seeing Rugrats at one time and I really love the Nickelodeon commercials and the rap from the 90's. I really wish those were back on!
"Cool Party" is the episode. Arnold: My unique sense of style? Rhonda: Yeah, like that weird skirt thingy you always wear. It's cool. Arnold: It's my shirt. (Pulls up his sweater to prove it) Rhonda: Like that, the way you call it a shirt, is so cool. Um, Rhonda, he was only telling the truth. It doesn't make him any cooler than anyone else. Not that cool should matter - how many other fourth-grade kids at PS118 cared about what was cool?

Logan Cascio While Rocko and Spongebob are both fantastic, they are nothing compared to the masterpiece that is..
INVADER ZIM!!!!!!!!!! I adore that NickToon, it's what I grew up with and I'm so hyped for its upcoming movie
That show was a hoot!
funny cause alot of voice actors on rocko went to spongebob
Unfortunately, i grew up when Nick was just starting to go down hill. I mostly watched Nickelodeon's sit coms, such as Drake & Josh, and i also watched George Lopez as a kid. Most of the cartoons i grew up with were on Cartoon Network and Disney channel. I stopped watching Nick after Spongebob changed writers. Never looked back since.
Can't say i do. Probably watched it though.
Danny Phantom was great though
I watched George Lopez too, but I probably grew up at the same time you did, and Nick had good cartoons back then: CatDog, Rugrats, Invader Zim, Chalkzone, SpongeBob, Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, etc.
Josh Strider would agree.
Many of Nick's sitcoms were actually pretty good up until around 2011 or so.
Doug never saw CatDog?
Hey Arnold was on Nickelodeon before CatDog, so...yeah
That show was awesome.
How about "angry beavers"?
He Forgot SpongeBob!
He was out of the whole Nick thing by the time Hey Arnold came out (1996)
I wish you had looked deeper into Hey Arnold. It got really dark and real for a kids show and was fantastic...
15:18 Oh my god, he sounds like an overly possessed Stitch from Lio and Stitch
11:59
Am I the only one who thinks that Doug should do a Nickelodeon month part 2 where he looks at the present day Nick shows and the things in between?
Fun fact: Apparently, the cast of Doug was drawn with different colors so they could connect with any viewers regardless of race.
Fun fact: I didn't watch that Doug cartoon because *first grade me* thought the multi-color skins made them look stupid. I hated the Simpsons at first for the same reason.
Angelica turning into Hilary Clinton is the most accurate and hilarious thing I’ve ever heard.
Doug, you got the theme song to Doug. I got the Nicktoons theme following me around. I feel your pain, multiplied.
You got it easy, my name is Thomas. Do you KNOW how many time I’ve had to put up with “Thomas the choo-choo train”?!
Or TOM from Toonami.
Hey Arnold!
The one time he didn't remember it and so I had to.
Jingwa Fohba Gold
He said he grew out of nickelodeon when that came out
My favorite part of the video has to be the intro, where he made it look like he was in the promo!
6:54
I just realised. . .
Doug is dressed like a child version of Wallace.
Does he give Patty C H E E S E on Valentine’s Day 😂
At first I thought you meant Wallace from Pokémon... that gay dude.
4:50 Somebody better pick up the phone because I FUCKING CALLED IT
Cooler
It was a telemarketer. :/
I did too.
15:38 thats his under shirt if you look it matches his collar
Plus there's a scene he in a episode where it's proven as an undershirt when he did one of the classic childhood mistakes of putting one's shirt on backwards
I have issues with the Doug theme too. My second high school choir teacher used to hear it in the morning as his theme song when he woke up in the morning.
6:43 Finally someone gets it! I was called Zoey 101 all throughout grade school, and I didn't even watch the show!
THANK YOU!!!!!!
He said he never watched the show.
10:26 And now that Bev's son is actually her daughter, this makes it either even funnier or even more uncomfortable.
11:52 That won't stop him from using this bit again in the Willy Wonka review.
It's okay, Doug. My name is Pat, so people would always call me Patty Mayonnaise. (Also, Patty o'Furniture, fat Pat, it's Pat from SNL, and more recently, starfish.)
Watching Doug as a kid was like being high.
I love Callie from Sheriff Callie's Wild West
Nickelodeon Month is hands down my favorite thing NC ever did.
Doug owes us a newer Nicktoon video removed from his nostalgia goggles so he can give the later shows a fair and critical shot
He glowingly reviewed Avatar: The Last Airbender
I Swear to Jack Helga From Hey Arnold!Has to be Bipolar
There's a difference between acting a certain way in front of others vs. letting your guard down when no one else is around. She's not bipolar. She's insecure.
@Bob Martin It’s When You Have Violent Mood Swings,Right?
@@neglectedprincessdaisy2814 ok
@Bob Martin ok,Thanks For Letting me Know
Who the fuck is Jack, and why lie to him?
When I was in elementary school there was a Mrs. Simpson at our school. So naturally all the kids would tease her by calling her Marge.
Lol!
My favorite is sponge bob
Season 1:😀
Season 2:👍
Season 3:😆😆😆😆😆😆
Season 4/5:🙂
season 6/7😡
Season 8😐
Season 9/10/11🤨
A Hillary Clinton comparison :D Topical. *STILL* topical.
I predicted that...
Weird because this episode was made in 2009
Yeeeaaah. You really show your age, thinking this has any relativity to now. Nice try though.
its even easyer now .
***** Oh shut up. You really think I don't know that this is from 2009? How old do you think I am? Fucking 10? *smh* Merely pointing out a coincidence, with the presidential elections and all.
12:50 - Dexter out of his laboratory? Where's Deedee?
I miss the original Spongebob episodes seasons 1-3.
Same.
Rocco's a Wallaby, ya dingbat! XP
The soundtrack from Doug reminds me of Seinfeld😂😂😂
Nickelodeon is my childhood. I still watch these shows every day, because I now have them on DVD.
12:34
That joke didn't age too well, now did it, Doug?
Wait. Doug was set in high school? I thought he was 12.
He was
Why would Doug(Walker) care?
It's actually set around middle school/junior high years. The Disney syndication later has them in high school. Doug and his friends are supposed to be early teens from what I understand, while his sister Judy is like late teens. It's all irrelevant now since I doubt the Critic wants to relive much about the show, but that's what I recall.
Hey Arnold, just for the colour palette and music alone, it is so beautiful Jim Lang is a credit to that show, the music makes you feel like your there, in the streets with Arnold and the gang it is s hard to explain
11:02 Did Dan Schneider write this part?
I still like him. Nowadays he's less frantic and more of a serious critic.
And today kids get... what...? Breadwinners? The shitty RUclips channel that had like 7 subscribers?
Nick actually cancelled Breadwinners if I'm correct. At least they have some pretty decent shows airing now, such as Harvey Beaks and The Loud House.
Adventure time Clarence Steven universe the amazing world of gumball regular show the loud house Harvey beaks teen titans go.
A pretty great way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first nicktoons ever made .
Good humorous video! I loved the part with the Nostalgia Critic and Daffy Duck talking at the same time. :)
Remember when Doug killed the Grapefruit juice industry before coming to Nick?
*WALLABY*
dandeentremont
Thank you.
Ah yes, being named Patrick and grow up in the early 2000s...
4:35 and that was answered in the abomination of a reboot, All Grown Up!
Desmond Magi Don't you mean continuation?
I loved All Grown Up! I had the GBA game, too. Well, I was 8 when it came out, so I might be looking back with nostalgia filter.
Doug, I know you dislike Doug, but....
Imagine sharing the name of the STUDIO. Where they repeat the name over, and over, and over again.
"Nick nick nick, nick nick nick nick..."
I was just rewatching this episode and I just noticed that when he's transitioning from Rugrats to Doug he accidentally calls Angelica, Angela.
How is Doug scary??? Wait that thing you said about Doug being scary is actually quite funnie
Siobhan Tobin It's because his name is Doug.
It's not a skirt it's a button up that's under the shirt you see. They even make a reference to this confusion in the show if I remember correctly.
"Cool Party" is the episode.
Arnold: My unique sense of style?
Rhonda: Yeah, like that weird skirt thingy you always wear. It's cool.
Arnold: It's my shirt. (Pulls up his sweater to prove it)
Rhonda: Like that, the way you call it a shirt, is so cool.
Um, Rhonda, he was only telling the truth. It doesn't make him any cooler than anyone else. Not that cool should matter - how many other fourth-grade kids at PS118 cared about what was cool?
