Your first thought might be that the Sonos Sub is a great addition to the Playbar, Beam, or Arc sound bar, and it certainly is. Adding it to one of these will give your Sonos home theater serious impact. But it's also a great addition to one of their powered speakers or the Sonos Amp, too. Adding a sub makes all types of music sound more rich and full.
The generation 3 model uses the same unique design as its predecessors, namely two facing force-canceling woofers that serve up huge bass with minimal distortion. What's different is on the inside, namely more memory and more processing power, which means it's the best-performing Sonos Sub yet, and it will get better over time with future updates.
As with all Sonos speakers, setup is easy through the Sonos app. And it's not fussy about placement, either, you can put it wherever it fits in your particular room. You can even lay it on its back if you need to.

In terms of sound, what are some comparable subs?
I have the B&W606s and a Sonos AMP on the way from you guys and would like to figure out a sub option. I'm open to sonos or not considering I have the sonos amp to play and connect to the other sonos in the house.
Thanks
Hi, i have the Gen 3 and the Arc. We recently moved, and i am going to use them on a new TV in the basement. I actually reinstalled the Sonos app, but the app doesn't ID either device. Any advice? Thank you.
It may be necessary to do a factory reset on them and then go through the setup process. If you purchased them from us, you can contact our technical support for help with the process. We include their toll free phone number on the order invoice as well as the shipping label on the box
@crutchfield thanks for the quick response. I was able to get as far as putting in my wifi password and rhen it could not search and find the Arc first
Let us know how the factory reset works, and if you purchased from us make sure to give our Technical Support team a call with your order number handy. We are happy to help!🙂
I love my 10 inch JBL sub. would this sub be an upgrade? I just can’t imagine it being more powerful.
There are some JBL powered subwoofer models as well as a few different system designs that can be upgraded by switching to this subwoofer. I recommend contacting an advisor to discuss your gear and setup to get a personal recommendation. Here's how you can reach us for this help:

Hey buddy
Is it compatible with the Sony sound system?
Sonos wireless subwoofers are compatible with the Sonos soundbars, speakers, and components below:
Compatible Speakers: Works with the Sonos One, One SL, and Five; as well as other Sonos speaker like the Play 1, Play 3, and Play 5 (Gen 2).
Compatible Soundbars: Works with the Sonos ARC, Beam (Gen 2), and Ray; as well as other Sonos soundbars like the Playbar, Playbase, and Beam (Gen 1). .
Compatible Components: Works with the Sonos Amp.
Bit of a noob here... but what’s the RMS and peak power of the sub? Trying to compare with other brands, like the HK Citation sub/system. Does the power matter? Looking to buy a soundbar with a sub (arc soundbar for Sonos) Open to be educated! 😅
Not all brands release this information. Sonos does not list the power rating of the subwoofer. I can attest that it sounds quite nice though!
Hi, I have a playbar and I love it so much, does the Sonos sub gen 3 play with playbar speaker?
This subwoofer will not work with the PlayBar because of changes that had to be made to the Sonos infrastructure to support Apple AirPlay 2. Only a Gen 1 or Gen 2 subwoofer will work with the PlayBar
Can you pair 2 of the Sonos subs? As in have 2 gen 3 subs.
Also it only has 1 hdmi port, how would I go about hooking up game consoles and what to do when a movie is in dts?
There is no way to pair two subwoofers to play in their theater setups. The Sonos bars that have an HDMI input are designed to connect to the TV's HDMI ARC port to get the audio from the TV. The game consoles will need to be connected to an HDMI input on the TV. Sonos does not support DTS formats so the DTS track on the movie will not play and the best Dolby Digital audio track on the disc which is supported by both the TV and bar will play. That's typically Dolby Digital for standard HDMI ARC gear or with eARC capable TV and bar, Dolby Atmos for top audio format.
Sorry can you explain me how to turn it on.
There is no power button on this subwoofer. Plugging it into the wall for power should be enough to turn it on. There is a join button to help simply the setup process. Once set up, it will automatically turn on to play when you have started playing music through the speakers the subwoofer is joined to.
Do you have to use an iPhone to do the true-play portion of set up?
It is necessary to use an iOS compatible device to run the Trueplay tuning, but you are not limited to only using iPhones. iPads and iPod Touches running iOS 12.0 or higher can also be used to run Truelplay
Can you pair this sub with the new Sonos Five? I just purchased it from Crutchfield and it's awesome! I'd like to get the Gen 3 Sub to go with it, and maybe even another Sonos Five for a 2.1 setup!
You 100% can do that!
Crutchfield any chance I could get a discount code for some kind of “bundle pack” to buy this setup?
@@kosta8439 apparently not
How do I connect JUST the SUB 3, and the $200 "Cheapest Speaker" to a Samsung TV without an Ethernet Coard?
You will need a Sonos soundbar, and either an HDMi cable to connect the the TV.
Hi,please tell me, wich subwoofer goes lower/deeper between this sonos and jbl 3.1 / 9.1 ?
Sonos sub is a different league compared to your traditional subs that JBL and other brands have. I've tested the JBL 9.1 and while it is very loud and deep, it doesn't sound as authentic and clear as the Sonos sub. If you have a very open room, with distant walls and a lot of background noise, then JBL will be heard better. If your room is closed, insulated, then Sonos by far will sound the best.
Great video thanks, can you adjust the frequency on the sub? My arc and one sl’s have a certain a,punch of bass, with the sub does it remove that bass the arc produces?
Hey Alex. I apologize for the late reply. The bass will be moved to the sub and no longer played within the speakers once the Sub is joined to them in the app
@@crutchfield thank you for your reply 👍🙏
With a pair of Sonos one sl’s as the rear left and right, along with an arc sound bar, in a small room with high ceilings, where is the best location to place the Sonos gen 3 sub? Thank you for your device. Cheers.
Hi Renie and thanks for reaching out! The Sonos sub isn't terribly picky with regard to placement, especially with their Trueplay tuning. The biggest issues to avoid are blocking the front acoustic slot port if placing against a wall and putting it in a confined space. I recommend placing it where you have adequate space and giving it a listen!
@@crutchfield one more question please. I saw online, a product that mounts it up on a wall. Would this block sound, if it’s mounted on a wall? Or, would the wall help? Thanks again for the help.
You may have seen this (or something similar): www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc313/p_870SUBB/Flexson-FLXSUBB.html
That type of mount will work just fine, as it leaves the front port open to the room. :-)
how does it goes with the sonos beam ? I have a large living room
It's easy to pair the Sonos Sub with the Sonos Beam for fuller, deeper bass.
Have you heard if Sonos is releasing a smaller Subwoofer dubbed The Sonos Sub Mini?
Heavily rumored on r/Sonos
We have not heard about any upcoming subwoofer release but it would be pretty awesome if they did release a smaller one that performed like the current model.
Thinking Arc + Sub. Is going Arc + Sub + 2 P1's overkill?
Christopher Lewert think that’s what they want us to do. Not overkill at all
That is the flagship and ideal setup for Sonos at the moment
Find an old play 5 or something gen 1 listed on their website that is eligible for their trade in and get a 30% coupon off the set from what I read on their page.. and from the rep told me on the phone.. Best Buy will honor it as well but you will need a 3 trade in items if buying three items to receive the 30% on each upgrade
I got the 2 of the IKEA Sonos lamps for my living room.
Bro it will not over kill it the sound i have the same set up but with the sonos one sl as surround and i can tell you using the trueplay the sound is amazing with the true play option the sound of those speakers matches great to each other i came from bose with aditional klipsch 10 inch sub and i can tell you the sonos sounds much much better go for it bro and lets talk once you have it want know ur experience keep safe always bro
great info
Are there recommendation as to where to place it?
That will depend on your room, typically the same wall as your screen is a solid starting point. from there move it until it sounds good to you!
Hi
Iam debating on getting this sub I have the Sonos ARC I bought it last week. BUT, Ihave a problem and it’s stopping me buying it ( apart from the price ) I live in a flat iam afraid it will be too loud .
Any advice.
The Sonos ARC does have a great bass response, all on it's own. If you still feel that you would like to use the sub along with the ARC, you will have some volume control that should help in controlling the impact of the bass response, if it ends up being too loud.
You can adjust the power of the sub you will have a great great sound quality with the sub the arc arc itself sounds really great but with the sub turns it to another level regarding your wories, dont worry just adjust the volume level of the bass and thats it this sub is different you will feel the bass including in low volume but without disturbing the others trust me i tried 6 different subs in 20 years this sub is awsome by far the best i ever heard
Can you use this with a sonos amp? I am using Focal speakers and want a nice wireless sub to connect if possible.
Yes, you can pair a Sonos subwoofer with a Sonos Amp.
@@crutchfield can you pair it with a Sonos amp used to run two B&W book shelf speakers, with other Sonos speakers scattered around? Primary use would be in the room with the B&W's.
Can two of these subs be paired with the Arc soundbar?
Only one subwoofer can be used with the Arc
You can pair two now
@@TravionMusic Yep. Provided one of them is a Gen 3.
Now u can
Is it compatible with the first Sonos sound bar ?????
The Gen 3 sub will not work with the first Sonos soundbar. The original sub and the Gen 2 model will work with that soundbar. We are sold out of those models. Hope you can find one to work with your soundbar!!
@@crutchfield lol it works fine, had no problems 🤷♂️
where is the sound being played?
The bass in the audio is played through this sub. The rest of the audio is played through a potential variety of Sonos speakers. Do you have any Sonos speakers?
Great content,
Quick question how can one tell Gen 3 from Gen 2
Cheers
We always list the difference so our customers know which one they are purchasing from us so there is no doubt on which one is being purchased (we only have the Gen 3 now). If you are trying to check one you already purchased, I recommend contacting Sonos to check as they should have a record when specific models were made to help identify which generation it is. I have 800-680-2345 for their support number
the gen 3 has a join button (button with an infinity icon) the gen 2 has a regular button.
hi possible tu use with Move Sonos One ?
It is possible to use this subwoofer with the Sonos One but not with the Sonos Move
@@crutchfield ok thanks
Can you add 2 sonos subs to a system?
indeed you can!
@@crutchfield Can you didn't think that was possible, there's no option to do that in the app from what I can see.
@@mitchellsx you can only add two if at least of them is a Gen3 sub.
will it work with playbar?
Yes, the gen 3 sub is compatible with the Sonos ARC, Playbar, Playbase, Beam, and Beam (Gen 2).
Wonder if there going to shut down support on the old one, like they did on their other speakers.
no the old ones will go on for 5 years at least
can i lay my sonos sub gen 2 on its side too ?
It is not designed to be placed that way.
@@crutchfield it actually is
How many watts is it?
Hi Mitchell,
The wattage of the Sonos Sub gen 3, is not a spec that is published by Sonos.
If you would like to try to get wattage information, I would recommend reaching out to Sonos directly at 800-680-2345
Is it compatible with Android?
Its not an ios/android thing. its on all platforms but you need the sonos app to use it.
I caint connect my sub to the sonos nar
Sorry to hear that, Romina.

HI can i use 2 subs with my sonos system ???
Absolutley!
@@crutchfield OK cause some stores have said only run 1 in the 5.1....so i can for sure go 5.2 ? don't wanna buy a 2nd one to find it doesn't work ...lol thx
So, upon further digging, when used in a surround sound system, a single sonos sub can be used. Multiple subs may be used in different zones within the same sonos ecosystem, but a surround system is limited to 5.1.
@@crutchfield hi i just spoke to Sonos and they said you can not run 2 subs together ...you can only do 5.1 and not 5.2....thought i would let you know....cheers
I have a PLAYBAR, so this will work with it?
Yes, the Playbar will work with this subwoofer.
this sub sounds very bloated and lacks detail.
Don't you have anything better to do than post this on every single review of this sub?
@@sturdyvw no, do you have anything better to do than read them all.
This sub sounds great, it has excellent frequency response. Do you even own one?
@@hsavidge why would i own a bloated sounding subwoofer?
@@operamatthew How else would you know what it sounds like?
