I thought about it for some time and it really seems like the social media side of the Sonic brand is like Spongebob ripping his pants. Funny at first, but after a while, people walked away because it wasn't funny. The only difference is that we haven't had an equivalent to the song that makes everything better. It's a weird comparison, but it made the most sense to me.
It's like that one kid in school who makes a funny joke and then repeats said joke at every opportunity, hoping to get the same reaction. It just get's annoying after awhile.
Another comparison would be that Sonic Boom is them acknowledging their screwups through 4th wall breaks and meta jokes but refusing to do anything about it.

I'm glad SEGA's giving their other games some spotlight. I lost interest in Sonic because of the boost gameplay. If you ask me, THAT style was lasted wayy longer than it deserved

In all seriousness, i get your disillusionment with the series. I loved it for many years, discovering it for myself in high school, but once youre all caught up and trapped in a dry spell, it's difficult to be excited for the future anymore. I stopped caring after Forces was released not because of its quality but also because of how shitty and divided the fanbase was after being in unity for Mania's release. It's not worth it to get mad anymore for me personally, because in a free market economy, I can just look forward to alternatives like Spark the Eletric Jester 2 or Freedom Planet 2.
Sad thing is, Big has never showed to be SUPER dumb in the past, he's just a chill dude who doesn't know much and just wants to relax with his pal Froggy, heck, the guy has a small hut in the forest, who ELSE could've built that but him, now they've turned him into....a worse character
Here is the list of things I would like to see in the next sonic game : - A captivating story (like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2) - A good life (minimum 9h and if possible more) - The return of the chaos Emeralds (and therefore of Super Sonic) - NEW places (no recovery of old areas) - 3D stages exclusively (no 2D) - long stages (3 min 30 or more) - Good controls (not like in Sonic Forces ...) - Several playable characters (Sonic / Shadows / Tails / Knucles / Amy ...) - Several game styles (gameplay specific to each character / aerial phases... ) - New characters (allies and enemies) -The return of Chaos (and Chaos Garden) - New bosses (if possible with a long epic fight) - A memorable final fight (No botched as in Sonic Forces). But knowing sonic team, I think that many of these elements will be missing in the next sonic game

Penders wrote some fantastic lore for the Archie Comics. It's just his attitude about Sonic Chronicles having a similar echidna clan that got people to hate him.
I feel kind of jealous of your stance here tbh. I don't WANT to care anymore but I still do. I'm invested in this series but I have no faith in it. If it were as simple as converting my love to another franchise I would but ever since I was younger, Sonic had practically RAISED me in those Dreamcast days. I respect the 2D games and hell I even bought and highly enjoyed Mania but it doesn't feel like that makes up for the complete lack of passion in the 3D games these days. I'm gonna get some flack for saying this but honestly? I felt more passion put into Sonic 06 than I did in Forces. Do I think Sonic 06 is higher in quality than Forces? Hell no, but I found I enjoyed myself playing Sonic 06 more not just because "Haha, it's so bad it's funny" but because despite their obvious rushed development, I could tell while playing it that they WANTED so much more out of it had they the time. Sonic Forces doesn't give that to me. Sonic Forces tells me that they had boxes to tick and so they ticked them. Fans said they wanted a more serious story again? Let's just check that off. Boost gameplay? Let's just check that off. Oh man, people like 2D Sonic even though this is the 3D game? Let's just check that off.

If they could have said "hey guys there's this stream named ngpe we want you to go to, there's won't be sonic in it but we recommend you look into it" and that would be fine, we could look at a lot of different games from many developers and they would be humbly honest. But to use sonic as advertising for the stream and not use him at ALL was just asking for hate. Funny enough I think this is where the fans hating the sonic social media started to multiply to even with optimistic sonic fans, including me. Heck I wasn't expecting this stream to happened, me and some of my friends were just listening to Webber's advice to be patient and we were but this really proves the point of they haven't given us any reason to trust them after FORCES and TSR false advertising, That's why a lot of fans are not letting the pandemic excuse slide anymore because like I showed above me, they really can't trust if that's the truth or not, I mean after that devilish stunt they pulled CAN YOU BLAME FANS FOR BEING ANGRY!!! I completely agree honestly. If I am to be honest I have taken a hiatus from Sonic games until a good one sparks my interest again they've just been doing such a disservice to the blue blur lately and the games have been completely stripped away of personality and charm since 2010 with the awful writing team. And the character's are complete shells of themselves. While Amy is my favorite character (alongside Tails) she acts like a completely different person now. I didn't mind the crush thing before, rather the problem was how certain games executed it, now it feels as if she doesn't like Sonic anymore and is too similar to her Boom counterpart who's most consistent personality trait is generic action girl who spouts random self aware jokes. Don't get me wrong Amy's changed since Lost World and I think this is Sonic Team's way to respond to the criticisms her character gets, but all they had to do was tone down the crush, not completely rid the character of one of her notable traits. That's not to say I don't dislike what they're doing with her I do like it, I just think it's an unneeded change only there to service detractors, who'd still complain that she's "too different" anyway because Amy can never win with people and will constantly be complained about regardless of improvements. (I think the IDW comics do a much better job at characterizing her anyway, the same applies to literally every other character) I just hate what they've done to the characters. Anyone who isn't the core 5 (Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Knuckles and Amy) either are just living props who serve as ineffective spectators and in the case of the main ones have been stripped of any personality they once had to where even Sonic is uninteresting at times. When's the last time Rouge was a treasure hunter that teased the other characters? When's the last time Knuckles was a competent treasure hunter with street smarts and a coolheaded attitude (though thickheaded at times)? When was the last time Sonic had a character that wasn't obliviously overconfident who just jokes about every situation? When's the last time Tails was useful and wasn't just amounted to techno babble or an exposition dump? I'd even prefer the dark age if I am to be honest (at least the dark age there was things to discuss and talk about even if the quality was bad) But yeah I'm with you, I'm basically drained of the bad writing, how the characters are non existent, the bland and stagnate quality I just want something to win me over again, but Sega hasn't been doing that in years and I don't want to be a debbie downer who just says everything is bad, but it's been a draining experience to say the least. That's not to say I'm quitting the series, I'll go back to the Pre-Colors games (minus a few exceptions of course) I'm just taking a hiatus from current Sonic because I feel like I'm getting nothing out of it anymore. I'm still a fan and will enjoy his older experiences (I mean Pre-Colors titles) just won't be invested until Sonic brings back the appeal factor he did in the past.
@@londonjackson8986 Not only that but none of the characters have any personality in their voices or tone. Granted this is probably the voice direction rather than the voice actors themselves, but I've never seen the character's so bland as they have been since Colors. Say what you will about Amy Rose, but part of why I liked her was the fact she was the most expressive character, when she got mad you knew she was mad, when she got over emotional you felt that. Now her most notable character trait is gone and doesn't really emote at all. The same goes for Knuckles you felt his cool and collected side as well as his hotheaded personality. Or how about Rouge's flirtatious nature and Tails child innocents and intellect? Everything about their personalities were notable and their voices reflected that. (Excluding games like Shadow and 2006 anyway) now even when the characters are suppose to emote or express you don't feel as if they are showing emotion, the most they do is a few gestures or look just kinda sad. And since the new direction/writing is centered more toward just throwing jokes every two seconds that's all that comes out of the voice direction. And no this isn't a voice acting flame war, I'm more criticizing the direction itself. I also remember when the characters actually contributed to the games, rather than be background props who only serve to spectate while Sonic does everything.
This video hit the nail right on the head. Sums up exactly how I feel about the Sonic series and it's future. I made the decision not too long ago that I would not buy another new Sonic game. I'm tired of the disappointment from this series and will just stick to the games I grew up with. There's just no reason to really stick around with a series that seems to pride itself on how little care can be put into the games and still make money. That part at 13:25 really hit home with me, one of my biggest gripes with the series is how butchered the characters have been (and how people seemed to celebrate that with Sonic Colors).

I've felt the same way. I feel like these are the true dark days of Sonic. As bad as Sonic 06 was for people, it really did feel like love was trying to be put into it before they rushed it. It felt like they were trying back then. Now it doesn't feel like that. Sonic outside of the video games these days have more passion put into them (except the movie). So from now on, I'm just gonna wait and see how a game does before I buy it.

To be fair to Sega and Sonic Team, the amount of time and manpower needed to make a Triple-AAA or even a mid market game has increased quite a bit since the 6th and early 7th generation, so you can't entirely blame them for the slower release cycle nowadays. Plus I'd argue that fast dev cycle back then really wasn't all that good for the quality of the games, it was that demand for yearly releases that led to dumpster fires like 06, and say what you want about Sonic teams more recent output, at least they're released in a relatively polished state, something you can't at all say for nearly all of Sonic's games in the 00s.
Like a lot of people, I just a game that has originality and doesn’t need to pander to nostalgia to milk money. Mania is the biggest culprit of this. The entire purpose of the game was literally pander to classic fanatics, and the funny thing is that it is essentially a licensed fan games...let that sink in, the fans can now make a better sonic than SEGA themselves Don’t get me wrong, the classic games were amazing, so were the adventure games, and to a much lesser extent, the dark age games. Yes, a lot of them had issues, but at least they actually tried to provide an experience instead of just money. But for me, the decrease in quality occurred during sonic colours. How so? - Gameplay went from a pleasant mix of 2D and 3D to minimal 3D and majority 2D (that final boss tho, much better than the rest of the game collectively) despite pretty much every trailer showing 3D sections - The writing in both the story and jokes had become too “look at me, we can make you little kiddies laugh, haha *baldy nose hair* “ The irony of this game is that it was the first sonic game that I ever bought with my own money, meaning that it does hold significance with me at least Generations luckily saved itself from this trap again...but still faltered a bit in my opinion, suffering from the same 2D-3D balance issue, and most of all the complete destruction of a majority of the sonic character cast, both in personality and characters Then came along lost world and literally flipped the table and said “fuck it, let’s start the real dark ages of sonic”. I’m not going to even go into detail, as I’m pretty sure everyone knows the issues with this game Mania, I sometimes don’t even count it as a legitimate sonic game. Not in the sense that the franchise is dead and can’t be revived, but in the fact that the fan base will just not allow it despite their best interests. Mau Pr I’m not a real fan anymore, not since forces at least. For one, the creators had tried to establish a lot for forces before its release; chaos returning, shadow possibly being bad, metal sonic, a new villain that actually looked a bit menacing. It had potential. It wasn’t just me who thought this, a large majority of the fan base (as toxic and horrid as it can be) were genuinely excited to see where this could go. But as shown by the game itself, we had every right to be disappointed
While I don’t completely agree with you on things like the sonic Twitter, I can agree with you that it seems like the people making these game don’t seem to care anymore. This is similar to power rangers megaforce, fan service without merit has no meaning, and the fact that we have IGN beening absolutely CRINGE including saying things like sonic was never good honestly makes me feel like one of my vital organs just exploded. I want to support this series and I always will, but I can’t help but feel like sega or sonic team just don’t seem to care anymore and that hurts most of all.

If Sega is to return Sonic to it's glory days, it needs to look no further than the Sonic Adventure games and take inspiration from that. I don't think they are helping themselves with the constant changing gameplay and tones. They honestly need to take their time with the product. Sonic works best in my opinion with an edgier story and tone than Mario. I don't think they should try fitting the game to younger audiences for the sake of it rather I'd rather they make it as a quality product that's aimed at a general audience. Mario does well at aiming their product to a general audience rather than kids.
All I want for the 30th anniversary are these Modern Sonic: Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Adventure 2 HD Remake collection in the vane of Crash N-Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy (no I don't want Sonic Adventure 3 after Sega tests the Water with the Sonic Adventure style gameplay under a different name) Classic Sonic: A Super Mario Maker style game that You can make your own Sonic levels based off of Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus and switching between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as playble Yes Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus is great but Sega needs to take it easy with Sonic for the 30th anniversary after Sonic Forces flopped because Sonic was made to be timeless like Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and other Nintendo IPs. with Sonic Adventure HD Collection and Sonic The Hedgehog Maker those game will bring spark back into Sonic again

While I’m so proud that the sonic movie is doing well... after Sonic Forces I told myself that I would give the next main sonic game (the 2021 game) a shot but if that game isn’t on par with Unleashed or Sonic Adventure 1-2 in terms of quality writing and characterization then I would stop buying sonic games until they prove they can consistently make those types of games again
Even with Sega poor track record with Sonic for me, I haven't truly enjoy a Sonic Game since 2009, I will always be excited for a new sonic game, i just love the series that much.
If a perfect Sonic Adventure remake comes out, and becomes not only the best video game remake but the the BEST remake of all time, then never in my life will I disrespect Sega every again.
I wish I couldn't care, but I can't help but keep an eye on the series, hoping... When Unleashed came out, I thought it was another spin off, it played similar to the storybook games with longer narrower levels, more emphasis on moving forwards fast rather than platforming. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I could still enjoy it for the story, characters and I didn't mind a diversion from the more Adventure style 3d platforming. But then I found out that boost was the way going forwards. Alright, not my preferred style of play, but at least the story and characters will be fun right? Nope. Forces hooked me in for the first time in a long time. I enjoyed what I could from it, but it was just so short and... empty. I can't help but keep an eye on the new game that will likely release in 2021, but I've learned my lesson about getting my hopes up, and I certainly won't be buying it unless I see some real changes. Because I'll be honest, the "dark ages" of Sonic were better than what we have right now, at least they still had the characters I cared about instead of the cardboard cutouts of them, and I got to actually play as other characters than Sonic.

I'll always get the new Sonic games when they come out, but I feel like every game to come out after Unleashed excluding Mania has just been either decent enough, or medicore, although I never played RoL so I can't really speak about that one. Either way my point is that I can't really get excited for Sonic games anymore because my gut tells me that the same trend will continue. Forces was their last chance to convince me otherwise and I think the game falls into the decent enough category, which isn't good enough for me to hype up anymore main games due to this pattern lasting for so long. Sonic Mania 2 is the only Sonic game I will be able to get excited for, but Sonic Team didn't develop Mania so it doesn't add up to their equation. Btw for those wondering when they click on my page I'm still following Sonic because I still want to, not because I have to due to my own channel. I could easily drop the Sonic content at any moment and switch to being a Spider-man channel.

Minus the minor defenses of Forces and Lost World, I pretty much reached that point after Forces. And no, IDW is just as guilty of the nostalgia pandering as the recent games. Only difference is, no one wants to admit it yet because of the so called superior writing.
I want to give IDW a fair chance, but there's too many red flags out right now, with Flynn being lowkey sketchy, not giving the Archie fans closure on what happened before the reboot trashed everything, potentially faking the mandates, focusing on boring overhyped OCs, picking up where Forces left off, leading to that wasted Metal Sonic Arc, is just one strike too many for me.
A way they can save Sonic is by 1.- Keep his personality the way it should be. 2.- Bring his Adventure or Adventure-ish gameplay. 3.- No old zones (unless it is Sonic Gen 2) 4.- No Classic Sonic. 5.- Keep the story interesting, but more simple and to the point. Sonic Adventure story: Dr. Eggman wants to get the Emeralds so that he can power up Chaos and destroy the world. Straight to the point. Sonic 06 story: Sonic has to protect a human princess named Elise from Dr. Eggman because she has Iblis inside of her. Dr. Eggman teams up with Mephilis to kill Sonic, releasing Iblis. The only way to revive him is by... Ugh... True Love. Needed much more explanation. I even skipped parts like time travel, Silver trying to destroy Sonic, etc. 6.- Level design being a bit more platform-y without the need of 2D sections. 7.- Bring the speed down just a little bit. 8.- Make an open-world game. If Sonic Utopia works, think of it. Multiple things you can do to reach Red Rings and multiple missions per level.
Sonic Adventure straight to the point? It has 6 stories you need to combine to understand the whole story. That's NOT SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT AT ALL.
Can't say I really disagree but one thing I DO want to say is: Mania looks and feels the way it does because Christian used his engine which is built from the retro games, so the games will of course look like the old Sonic games. It probably would have been pretty hard to change it and overall I don't think that's the big deal here. But can we please stop having 2D games? I loved Mania but we need to have more 3D games. If in quite a few years we get another 2D game that's okay... As long as we are getting plenty of 3D games as well.
Mania is harmless. It took place of 2D games made by Dimps - Advance series, Rush series, Colors DS and Generations 3DS.. The problem are 2D sections in 3D games. They should go away.
I want to be optimistic about the future of Sonic seeing as he's one of my favorite characters in gaming as well, but sometimes it gets hard, especially after Forces. Here's hoping that Frontiers will be good!

the whole point of sonic up till now has been appealing to the eastern markets and side of the world, as it seems that they really liked forces and TSR(if the reviews were anything to go by). SEGA had restructured at the start of the year, apparently giving most of the power over sonic's property to america. the delay on Team Sonic Racing might have been their part but, maybe this upcoming game will be proof of america's quality. the west has been taking this way worse and for good reason, but i do hope the changes with america do something finally. the delay(aforementioned) botched it as much as it helped it since it got pushed very close to CTRNF's release date, so it really hurts it altogether. (This is a decent video, though- editing and audio mixing's very nice!)
If that's the case then prepare for blue arms Sonic followed by incredibly bad meta humor. They might make him generic enough for people to fully forget him this time.
I absolutely couldn't agree more with this video, sad as that may be. I'd just like to see Sonic as a legitimate franchise that actually releases more than 4 worthwhile games in the span of 10 years.
This is why I just stick to the Sonic games I grew up with. Pretty much everything from 1991-2009. Except for Shadow's game, and Sonic 0666. All the 2010-present shit can go fuck itself. Also, I could care less about Team Sonic Racing. The only thing I like about it, is that Crush 40 returned for the music. That's it.

Sonic died in 1994. It got a brief boost of life support with Mania, and then died immediately with Forces, and barely got back on life support with Mania Plus. Then the movie absolutely murdered the fuck out of any goodwill this broken busted series had left. Either give us ONLY Sonic mania sequels, or let Sonic stay dead forever.
Ik this video is a month old and idk if this would get a reply but It’s okay to stray away from something current (until you seen something good for your liking) while enjoying what’s already available. For me I’m cautiously optimistic about the next 30th anniversary sonic game after the whole restructuring of Sonic Team desolving and them being merged with other developers (if that sounds about right). All and all I’m just wishing them luck for 2021
Why should you care? Because you can do something about it. You can tell others of what Sonic and what certain games have meant to you, regardless of how small the message travels. As long as the message is heard by someone, that is something.
At this point, I'll keep my mind open as long as the next game has SOME form of credibility. I'll be fucking worried if it involves the Adventure Formula, because while I don't hate it, god damn fans have been vocal about it!
Superhedgehog 64 Lost World and Forces had different and Original Ideas with Gameplay elements. And Forces was at least more honest with it’s nostalgia pandering than Lost World. Lost World I thought was lazy with it’s aesthetics, which I personally find worse than straight up pandering. Generations had an excuse for being a celebration of 20 years.

@@londonjackson8986 I feel like Forces had a TON of missed potential. It had some things going for it like how some of the sonic boost were enjoyable. If they removed classic sonic from the game entirely and just focused on Sonics boost gameplay it would have been so much better. I like the idea of the world ending and eggman taking over, its neat. But the presentation doesnt do it justice at all. I wish it took a page from mario galaxy 1 where it starts off a stage all happy and jolly and then everything goes to shit and sonic has genuine fear because he doesnt know what to do and is unsure if he the hero can even stop whats happening around him. Instead of being thrusted into a cutscene where sonic gets beat up in some hellscape. I like the idea of sonic getting beat up and then missing but when it cuts back to him breaking out he is too cocky and learns nothing. They just waste the villains throughout the game as well. I just wish that after Sonic supposed death you played as Knuckles and rescued sonic and its a massige scene where sonic is visually happy to see his friend again. Then the entire game after varies between the sonic boost formula already in the game with less 2d bits in it as well as knuckles who play exactly like the avatar character except less slippery and fast and focuses more on combat while still retaining the level design of the boost formula. Also I wish the soundtrack fit into some more emotional scenes and such. Also I just wish Sonic was less of an asshat with his delivery of lines and the writing itself. Additionally I wish the game was a bit longer than 3 hours, maybe 5. I get that I just rambled on for ages about this but im planning a video on the subject so I have a lot of ideas like these on my mind.

Takashi Lizuka is just like George Lucas. They both made great stuff in the past. However they weren't the only reason those things good. George Lucas and other directors they shared their creativity to create a piece of art. But George got all the credit, then George Lucas alone directed the prequels. And you know how that turned out. And know it's the same thing with Takashi Lizuka. Lizuka and other developers made great sonic games. But Lizuka got all the credit, and know we have this.

I thought about it for some time and it really seems like the social media side of the Sonic brand is like Spongebob ripping his pants. Funny at first, but after a while, people walked away because it wasn't funny. The only difference is that we haven't had an equivalent to the song that makes everything better. It's a weird comparison, but it made the most sense to me.
It's like that one kid in school who makes a funny joke and then repeats said joke at every opportunity, hoping to get the same reaction. It just get's annoying after awhile.

In all seriousness, i get your disillusionment with the series. I loved it for many years, discovering it for myself in high school, but once youre all caught up and trapped in a dry spell, it's difficult to be excited for the future anymore. I stopped caring after Forces was released not because of its quality but also because of how shitty and divided the fanbase was after being in unity for Mania's release. It's not worth it to get mad anymore for me personally, because in a free market economy, I can just look forward to alternatives like Spark the Eletric Jester 2 or Freedom Planet 2.

I want to be hyped, but after Forces... Im worried now...
Here is the list of things I would like to see in the next sonic game :
- A captivating story (like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2)
- A good life (minimum 9h and if possible more)
- The return of the chaos Emeralds (and therefore of Super Sonic)
- NEW places (no recovery of old areas)
- 3D stages exclusively (no 2D)
- long stages (3 min 30 or more)
- Good controls (not like in Sonic Forces ...)
- Several playable characters (Sonic / Shadows / Tails / Knucles / Amy ...)
- Several game styles (gameplay specific to each character / aerial phases... )
- New characters (allies and enemies)
-The return of Chaos (and Chaos Garden)
- New bosses (if possible with a long epic fight)
- A memorable final fight (No botched as in Sonic Forces).
But knowing sonic team, I think that many of these elements will be missing in the next sonic game

I feel kind of jealous of your stance here tbh. I don't WANT to care anymore but I still do. I'm invested in this series but I have no faith in it. If it were as simple as converting my love to another franchise I would but ever since I was younger, Sonic had practically RAISED me in those Dreamcast days. I respect the 2D games and hell I even bought and highly enjoyed Mania but it doesn't feel like that makes up for the complete lack of passion in the 3D games these days.
I'm gonna get some flack for saying this but honestly? I felt more passion put into Sonic 06 than I did in Forces. Do I think Sonic 06 is higher in quality than Forces? Hell no, but I found I enjoyed myself playing Sonic 06 more not just because "Haha, it's so bad it's funny" but because despite their obvious rushed development, I could tell while playing it that they WANTED so much more out of it had they the time. Sonic Forces doesn't give that to me. Sonic Forces tells me that they had boxes to tick and so they ticked them. Fans said they wanted a more serious story again? Let's just check that off. Boost gameplay? Let's just check that off. Oh man, people like 2D Sonic even though this is the 3D game? Let's just check that off.

Remember when the sonic social media advertised the stream with sonic, and remember that we got thirty minutes of Catherine instead. Now granted to be fair they didn't say sonic was gonna be in the stream but they didn't say sonic WASN'T gonna be in the stream either. They straight up try to use a loophole to get out of that situation, even when people were trying to ask specifically about sonic they just didn't gave a straight answer. If they could have said "hey guys there's this stream named ngpe we want you to go to, there's won't be sonic in it but we recommend you look into it" and that would be fine, we could look at a lot of different games from many developers and they would be humbly honest. But to use sonic as advertising for the stream and not use him at ALL was just asking for hate. Funny enough I think this is where the fans hating the sonic social media started to multiply to even with optimistic sonic fans, including me. Heck I wasn't expecting this stream to happened, me and some of my friends were just listening to Webber's advice to be patient and we were but this really proves the point of they haven't given us any reason to trust them after FORCES and TSR false advertising, That's why a lot of fans are not letting the pandemic excuse slide anymore because like I showed above me, they really can't trust if that's the truth or not, I mean after that devilish stunt they pulled CAN YOU BLAME FANS FOR BEING ANGRY!!! I completely agree honestly. If I am to be honest I have taken a hiatus from Sonic games until a good one sparks my interest again they've just been doing such a disservice to the blue blur lately and the games have been completely stripped away of personality and charm since 2010 with the awful writing team. And the character's are complete shells of themselves. While Amy is my favorite character (alongside Tails) she acts like a completely different person now. I didn't mind the crush thing before, rather the problem was how certain games executed it, now it feels as if she doesn't like Sonic anymore and is too similar to her Boom counterpart who's most consistent personality trait is generic action girl who spouts random self aware jokes.
Don't get me wrong Amy's changed since Lost World and I think this is Sonic Team's way to respond to the criticisms her character gets, but all they had to do was tone down the crush, not completely rid the character of one of her notable traits.
That's not to say I don't dislike what they're doing with her I do like it, I just think it's an unneeded change only there to service detractors, who'd still complain that she's "too different" anyway because Amy can never win with people and will constantly be complained about regardless of improvements. (I think the IDW comics do a much better job at characterizing her anyway, the same applies to literally every other character) I just hate what they've done to the characters. Anyone who isn't the core 5 (Sonic, Tails, Eggman, Knuckles and Amy) either are just living props who serve as ineffective spectators and in the case of the main ones have been stripped of any personality they once had to where even Sonic is uninteresting at times.
When's the last time Rouge was a treasure hunter that teased the other characters? When's the last time Knuckles was a competent treasure hunter with street smarts and a coolheaded attitude (though thickheaded at times)? When was the last time Sonic had a character that wasn't obliviously overconfident who just jokes about every situation? When's the last time Tails was useful and wasn't just amounted to techno babble or an exposition dump? I'd even prefer the dark age if I am to be honest (at least the dark age there was things to discuss and talk about even if the quality was bad)
But yeah I'm with you, I'm basically drained of the bad writing, how the characters are non existent, the bland and stagnate quality I just want something to win me over again, but Sega hasn't been doing that in years and I don't want to be a debbie downer who just says everything is bad, but it's been a draining experience to say the least. That's not to say I'm quitting the series, I'll go back to the Pre-Colors games (minus a few exceptions of course) I'm just taking a hiatus from current Sonic because I feel like I'm getting nothing out of it anymore. I'm still a fan and will enjoy his older experiences (I mean Pre-Colors titles) just won't be invested until Sonic brings back the appeal factor he did in the past.
@@londonjackson8986 Not only that but none of the characters have any personality in their voices or tone. Granted this is probably the voice direction rather than the voice actors themselves, but I've never seen the character's so bland as they have been since Colors.
Say what you will about Amy Rose, but part of why I liked her was the fact she was the most expressive character, when she got mad you knew she was mad, when she got over emotional you felt that. Now her most notable character trait is gone and doesn't really emote at all. The same goes for Knuckles you felt his cool and collected side as well as his hotheaded personality. Or how about Rouge's flirtatious nature and Tails child innocents and intellect?
Everything about their personalities were notable and their voices reflected that. (Excluding games like Shadow and 2006 anyway) now even when the characters are suppose to emote or express you don't feel as if they are showing emotion, the most they do is a few gestures or look just kinda sad. And since the new direction/writing is centered more toward just throwing jokes every two seconds that's all that comes out of the voice direction.
And no this isn't a voice acting flame war, I'm more criticizing the direction itself. I also remember when the characters actually contributed to the games, rather than be background props who only serve to spectate while Sonic does everything.

This video hit the nail right on the head. Sums up exactly how I feel about the Sonic series and it's future. I made the decision not too long ago that I would not buy another new Sonic game. I'm tired of the disappointment from this series and will just stick to the games I grew up with. There's just no reason to really stick around with a series that seems to pride itself on how little care can be put into the games and still make money. That part at 13:25 really hit home with me, one of my biggest gripes with the series is how butchered the characters have been (and how people seemed to celebrate that with Sonic Colors).

I've felt the same way. I feel like these are the true dark days of Sonic. As bad as Sonic 06 was for people, it really did feel like love was trying to be put into it before they rushed it. It felt like they were trying back then. Now it doesn't feel like that. Sonic outside of the video games these days have more passion put into them (except the movie). So from now on, I'm just gonna wait and see how a game does before I buy it.

To be fair to Sega and Sonic Team, the amount of time and manpower needed to make a Triple-AAA or even a mid market game has increased quite a bit since the 6th and early 7th generation, so you can't entirely blame them for the slower release cycle nowadays. Plus I'd argue that fast dev cycle back then really wasn't all that good for the quality of the games, it was that demand for yearly releases that led to dumpster fires like 06, and say what you want about Sonic teams more recent output, at least they're released in a relatively polished state, something you can't at all say for nearly all of Sonic's games in the 00s.

Like a lot of people, I just a game that has originality and doesn’t need to pander to nostalgia to milk money.
Mania is the biggest culprit of this. The entire purpose of the game was literally pander to classic fanatics, and the funny thing is that it is essentially a licensed fan games...let that sink in, the fans can now make a better sonic than SEGA themselves
Don’t get me wrong, the classic games were amazing, so were the adventure games, and to a much lesser extent, the dark age games. Yes, a lot of them had issues, but at least they actually tried to provide an experience instead of just money. But for me, the decrease in quality occurred during sonic colours. How so?
- Gameplay went from a pleasant mix of 2D and 3D to minimal 3D and majority 2D (that final boss tho, much better than the rest of the game collectively) despite pretty much every trailer showing 3D sections
- The writing in both the story and jokes had become too “look at me, we can make you little kiddies laugh, haha *baldy nose hair* “
The irony of this game is that it was the first sonic game that I ever bought with my own money, meaning that it does hold significance with me at least
Generations luckily saved itself from this trap again...but still faltered a bit in my opinion, suffering from the same 2D-3D balance issue, and most of all the complete destruction of a majority of the sonic character cast, both in personality and characters

Forces had promise, I’ll give it that. I remember camping at lake Ainsworth (Australia) and sneaking off to a part of the campsite with half decent wifi and loading up the trailer for forces and seeing infinite for the first time, along with chaos, metal sonic and shadow (I don’t care about Zavok). Then, I remember jamming to infinite’s theme (I’m a metal head, I’m a sucker for heavy guitar shredding) But then after playing the game, I was immensely disappointed with pretty much everything

The only issue with creating a game that will finally fix this is that it’s impossible. Not in the sense that the franchise is dead and can’t be revived, but in the fact that the fan base will just not allow it despite their best interests. Too many fans have largely polarising views on what is good in the sonic franchise, and they really like to show it. Therefore, one single game cannot address every need and want of all the sonic fans, which is why I have lost faith in the new era of sonic

For one, the creators had tried to establish a lot for forces before its release; chaos returning, shadow possibly being bad, metal sonic, a new villain that actually looked a bit menacing. It had potential. It wasn’t just me who thought this, a large majority of the fan base (as toxic and horrid as it can be) were genuinely excited to see where this could go. But as shown by the game itself, we had every right to be disappointed

While I don’t completely agree with you on things like the sonic Twitter, I can agree with you that it seems like the people making these game don’t seem to care anymore.
This is similar to power rangers megaforce, fan service without merit has no meaning, and the fact that we have IGN beening absolutely CRINGE including saying things like sonic was never good honestly makes me feel like one of my vital organs just exploded.
I want to support this series and I always will, but I can’t help but feel like sega or sonic team just don’t seem to care anymore and that hurts most of all.

I don't think they are helping themselves with the constant changing gameplay and tones. They honestly need to take their time with the product.
Sonic works best in my opinion with an edgier story and tone than Mario. I don't think they should try fitting the game to younger audiences for the sake of it rather I'd rather they make it as a quality product that's aimed at a general audience. Mario does well at aiming their product to a general audience rather than kids.

While I’m so proud that the sonic movie is doing well... after Sonic Forces I told myself that I would give the next main sonic game (the 2021 game) a shot but if that game isn’t on par with Unleashed or Sonic Adventure 1-2 in terms of quality writing and characterization then I would stop buying sonic games until they prove they can consistently make those types of games again

When Unleashed came out, I thought it was another spin off, it played similar to the storybook games with longer narrower levels, more emphasis on moving forwards fast rather than platforming. I wasn't the biggest fan, but I could still enjoy it for the story, characters and I didn't mind a diversion from the more Adventure style 3d platforming. But then I found out that boost was the way going forwards. Alright, not my preferred style of play, but at least the story and characters will be fun right? Nope.
Forces hooked me in for the first time in a long time. I enjoyed what I could from it, but it was just so short and... empty. I can't help but keep an eye on the new game that will likely release in 2021, but I've learned my lesson about getting my hopes up, and I certainly won't be buying it unless I see some real changes. Because I'll be honest, the "dark ages" of Sonic were better than what we have right now, at least they still had the characters I cared about instead of the cardboard cutouts of them, and I got to actually play as other characters than Sonic.
They need a new creative director for Sonic.

I do somewhat agree with you though. I'll always get the new Sonic games when they come out, but I feel like every game to come out after Unleashed excluding Mania has just been either decent enough, or medicore, although I never played RoL so I can't really speak about that one. Either way my point is that I can't really get excited for Sonic games anymore because my gut tells me that the same trend will continue. Forces was their last chance to convince me otherwise and I think the game falls into the decent enough category, which isn't good enough for me to hype up anymore main games due to this pattern lasting for so long. Sonic Mania 2 is the only Sonic game I will be able to get excited for, but Sonic Team didn't develop Mania so it doesn't add up to their equation.
Btw for those wondering when they click on my page I'm still following Sonic because I still want to, not because I have to due to my own channel. I could easily drop the Sonic content at any moment and switch to being a Spider-man channel.

I don't give a crap about Sonic games anymore either, because I pretty much hated everything post Unleashed and Black Knight. Including Mania, that game is a null void, a glorified ROM hack.
Minus the minor defenses of Forces and Lost World, I pretty much reached that point after Forces. And no, IDW is just as guilty of the nostalgia pandering as the recent games. Only difference is, no one wants to admit it yet because of the so called superior writing.
I want to give IDW a fair chance, but there's too many red flags out right now, with Flynn being lowkey sketchy, not giving the Archie fans closure on what happened before the reboot trashed everything, potentially faking the mandates, focusing on boring overhyped OCs, picking up where Forces left off, leading to that wasted Metal Sonic Arc, is just one strike too many for me.

A way they can save Sonic is by
1.- Keep his personality the way it should be.
2.- Bring his Adventure or Adventure-ish gameplay.
3.- No old zones (unless it is Sonic Gen 2)
4.- No Classic Sonic.
5.- Keep the story interesting, but more simple and to the point.
Sonic Adventure story: Dr. Eggman wants to get the Emeralds so that he can power up Chaos and destroy the world. Straight to the point.
Sonic 06 story: Sonic has to protect a human princess named Elise from Dr. Eggman because she has Iblis inside of her. Dr. Eggman teams up with Mephilis to kill Sonic, releasing Iblis. The only way to revive him is by... Ugh... True Love. Needed much more explanation. I even skipped parts like time travel, Silver trying to destroy Sonic, etc.
6.- Level design being a bit more platform-y without the need of 2D sections.
7.- Bring the speed down just a little bit.
8.- Make an open-world game. If Sonic Utopia works, think of it. Multiple things you can do to reach Red Rings and multiple missions per level.
Sonic Adventure straight to the point? It has 6 stories you need to combine to understand the whole story. That's NOT SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT TO THE POINT AT ALL.

Mania looks and feels the way it does because Christian used his engine which is built from the retro games, so the games will of course look like the old Sonic games. It probably would have been pretty hard to change it and overall I don't think that's the big deal here.
But can we please stop having 2D games? I loved Mania but we need to have more 3D games. If in quite a few years we get another 2D game that's okay... As long as we are getting plenty of 3D games as well.
Mania is harmless. It took place of 2D games made by Dimps - Advance series, Rush series, Colors DS and Generations 3DS..

the whole point of sonic up till now has been appealing to the eastern markets and side of the world, as it seems that they really liked forces and TSR(if the reviews were anything to go by). SEGA had restructured at the start of the year, apparently giving most of the power over sonic's property to america. the delay on Team Sonic Racing might have been their part but, maybe this upcoming game will be proof of america's quality.
the west has been taking this way worse and for good reason, but i do hope the changes with america do something finally. the delay(aforementioned) botched it as much as it helped it since it got pushed very close to CTRNF's release date, so it really hurts it altogether.

Sonic died in 1994. It got a brief boost of life support with Mania, and then died immediately with Forces, and barely got back on life support with Mania Plus. Then the movie absolutely murdered the fuck out of any goodwill this broken busted series had left. Either give us ONLY Sonic mania sequels, or let Sonic stay dead forever.

Ik this video is a month old and idk if this would get a reply but It’s okay to stray away from something current (until you seen something good for your liking) while enjoying what’s already available. For me I’m cautiously optimistic about the next 30th anniversary sonic game after the whole restructuring of Sonic Team desolving and them being merged with other developers (if that sounds about right). All and all I’m just wishing them luck for 2021
Why should you care?
Because you can do something about it. You can tell others of what Sonic and what certain games have meant to you, regardless of how small the message travels. As long as the message is heard by someone, that is something.

Lost World I thought was lazy with it’s aesthetics, which I personally find worse than straight up pandering.

@@londonjackson8986 I feel like Forces had a TON of missed potential. It had some things going for it like how some of the sonic boost were enjoyable. If they removed classic sonic from the game entirely and just focused on Sonics boost gameplay it would have been so much better. I like the idea of the world ending and eggman taking over, its neat. But the presentation doesnt do it justice at all. I wish it took a page from mario galaxy 1 where it starts off a stage all happy and jolly and then everything goes to shit and sonic has genuine fear because he doesnt know what to do and is unsure if he the hero can even stop whats happening around him. Instead of being thrusted into a cutscene where sonic gets beat up in some hellscape. I like the idea of sonic getting beat up and then missing but when it cuts back to him breaking out he is too cocky and learns nothing. They just waste the villains throughout the game as well. I just wish that after Sonic supposed death you played as Knuckles and rescued sonic and its a massige scene where sonic is visually happy to see his friend again. Then the entire game after varies between the sonic boost formula already in the game with less 2d bits in it as well as knuckles who play exactly like the avatar character except less slippery and fast and focuses more on combat while still retaining the level design of the boost formula. Also I wish the soundtrack fit into some more emotional scenes and such. Also I just wish Sonic was less of an asshat with his delivery of lines and the writing itself. Additionally I wish the game was a bit longer than 3 hours, maybe 5. I get that I just rambled on for ages about this but im planning a video on the subject so I have a lot of ideas like these on my mind.

Takashi Lizuka is just like George Lucas.
They both made great stuff in the past. However they weren't the only reason those things good. George Lucas and other directors they shared their creativity to create a piece of art. But George got all the credit, then George Lucas alone directed the prequels. And you know how that turned out.
