My favorite part of this book is when wolf just casually asks: "Did you just shoot me?!" lmao that was so hilarious :D

This is actually my favorite of the series because I love the relationship between Wolf and Scarlet. I think part of the reason I'm able to look past the insta love is because it is kinda one sided. Scarlet still obviously has feelings for wolf but hasn't fallen into that insta love trope. And I feel like wolf falling into that trope makes more sense because of his past. But I just love them so much together so I really just look past how long they've actually known each other. I think Marissa Meyer said it's actually pronounced ee-ko, which has been hard for me because I pronounced it the same way you did.

Maybe after I read Cress I'll be able to understand their relationship more?

jessethereader I think you get a bit more about Scarlet's feelings in Cress and if you haven't read the novella about Wolf yet that gives you a lot more about him and his history.

You described everything I don't like about Scarlet. The instalove was so cringe worthy and I started yelling at my book when they were all loveydovey.
LIKE SCARLET COME ONE HE LITERALLY TRIED TO KILL AND BETRAY YOU YET YOU STILL LOVE HIM. NO.

Sooo glad you were annoyed with Scarlet too. I wanted to reach through the book and slap her when she chewed Cinder at the end about how she should have solved everything by now - when she literally spent the entire book being selfish. Ugh. I'm about 1/3 into Cress and I am really struggling to finish this series at all, curious to see how it goes for you.

On the contrary, I liked scarlet better (although I'm currently reading cress and it's awesome), I kept yearning for a scarlet chapter, I loved the romance throughout the book , and I didn't like Thorne what-so-ever. Although my opinion on Thorne has changed since starting Cress, I disagree with you on mostly all of your main points😂

im very late, but i actually completely agree with you! i loved cinder (the book and the character) more than scarlet. i was trying to think about the aspects of Scarlets personality and i could only think of her sassiness. her personality wasn't really shown much, which disappointed me. i love thorne! the instalove bothered me too. i looked at the book and i was like "This took place in what... 5 days?!" i missed kai in this book, but the characters were amazing (at least, most of them were).

  • @palmer.f96

I actually loved this book the most out of the series. I personally enjoyed the relationship between Wolf and Scarlet. And im just saying as for instalove. Kai and Cinder were kinda similar I mean yeah they didn't just jump right into kissing and stuff but that just works well with their characters I think. I just really liked Scarlet too i don't know though there were some points when I got annoyed with her but she's my favorite out of the three girls so far.

I think Scarlet & Wolf's "insta-love" kinda puts off most of the readers, I don't know about everyone but I think someone knows a bit of the "werewolf culture". Anyone reads any werewolf themed books out there? You can totally relate to this, and the explanation for Scarlet & Wolf's "insta-love".
It's kind of complicated in this book but I think it has to do with the whole "werewolf culture" concept from books thingy. It only means they're mates and I don't know how this ordeal plays in the book in Marissa's imagination but mostly in werewolf books, instant love is understandable, it is a part of their werewolf community to have the knowledge that they have already destined mates and they will feel the "pull" instantly. Like literally just staring into their eyes and BAM! they're in love. That sounds kind of put-off but once you get accustomed to this general idea of "mates" it kinda tugs your heart. Plus mates are like the short term of soulmates, if you hadn't noticed. But as I said, I don't know how this ordeal plays in Marissa Meyer's imagination, it's just the general idea of werewolf mates. PLEASE READ WEREWOLF-THEMED BOOKS, you'll understand! It's not like the "Twilight" concept of werewolves tbh, it's way more than that and it's interesting to know their "world" (As if they're real)
AND PLUS! (In the "werewolf culture" thingy) THE WOLVES HAVE THEIR GODDESS WHICH THEY CALL "MOON GODDESS" in which they believe the one who created them. Additional info, they call their Alpha Female, "Luna". (In which I'm mind-blown, because Scarlet has Luna blood running through her veins. AND LEVANA CREATED THESE MUTANTS/WEREWOLVES AND SHE'S QUEEN OF LUNA) SO THIS BOOK JUST COMPLETELY SHATTERED MY MIND.

  • @cindyobrien5626

Scarlet is my favorite character. I love her because she's bold but also stubborn. She's not afraid to say what she's thinking. And here's to explain why she was so mad at Cinder: Scarlet loved her grandmother a lot because her grandmother was the person she really connected with and was able to be herself with. She knew her grandmother had died trying to protect Cinder's secrets from the lunars. At this point, Scarlet was not only in grieving but she was also correct in her suspicions as Cinder spent most of this book trying to learn about herself instead of actually acting and going to Africa like Dr. Erland told her to. As I said Scarlet is a very straightforward person and Cinder needed to be called out. Scarlet may have even sensed that Cinder was unwilling to accept herself as Princess Selene, and calling her out was very important. I look up to Scarlet because she is bold and stands up for her beliefs. To people saying she's a weak, underdeveloped character, I say she's the opposite. She is the strongest character in the series.

I actually didn't mind the insta love because, Wolf is...well, a wolf (if I make any sense😂). What I'm trying to say is that when a wolf finds a mate, the mating bond happens immediately. I kind of figured that that was what Meyer was aiming for.

I would agree that Scarlet wasn't quite as good as Cinder, but Cress is absolutely amazing :)
The relationship between Scarlet and Wolf is kind of weird... I love them, but it did develop a little fast, yeah.
You get to see so much of Thorne in Cress. It's wonderful.

But I still love this book. I love the whole series so much.

I'm loving your reviews! I picked up Scarlett without reading Cinder because I didn't know that it was the second book and although Cinder's story was quite lost on me I managed to pick up on most of her story through Scarlett which I thought was great and Cinder's story intrigued me way more than Scarlett's. Amen to the cringe-worthy instalove thing. Granted, in the end i didn't enjoy Scarlett much so I became really sceptical about wanting to continue on with the series, but after hearing your opinions maybe I should..?

i know im late to this party but i just finished reading this book and wanted to add my 2 cents.
i excused the insta-love, in light of the extreme circumstances which scarlet and wolf were in. i could understand the surge of adrenaline and the forming a bond instantly. also *spoiler* wolf is part animal so him deciding quickly that scarlet is the one wouldn't be out of character for him. i hope scarlet and cinder bond in the next book, big fan of team sisterhood/brotherhood.

Scarlet actually was the first book I read of The Lunar Chronicles, and I loved it soooo much! Everything was so intense!
I think Scarlet was such an amazing character, and so was Thorne! I love all of them equally and Wolf is just the best, but my god do I love Thorne so much 7w7
And WOLFLET I LOVE IT I SHIPPED THEM SINCE THEY MET
Hmm me and Jesse have very different opinions about the book XD
The best thing about Thorne is that he is actually more complex than just being the "dumb" character he's actually really emotional.
Kaider is the bessssssht THEY ARE SO CUTE AAAAAAAAK
Scarlet was the birthplace of the Rampion Crew!!!

Hey @jessethereader! You should check out the short stories Marissa Meyers has about the Lunar chronicles. There's one on Cinder's background, Wolf's background and a mini Thorne story. As well as one in the lunar universe, but not pertaining to the actual story lines. They should be on Marisa's website. They really flesh out the universe and give some background that might not be in the books. The one about Wolf REALLLLY shed some light on why he acts the way he does and exactly how they genetically modified him and his pack. Also I'm happy you're finally getting into this series and that you love it so much!

I just finished Scarlet and I completely agree with everything you said! When I got to the "you'll always be the only one" line I think my mouth literally dropped open, it was so ridiculous. Overall I was able to get through this book much faster than Cinder because the world was already built and everything was so action based. I loved the different perspectives we got (I need more Kai chapters!!!!) and they really helped the plot move along really quickly for me. One major downside is that I feel like Scarlet's character wasn't developed at all and this book is supposed to be about her. She was so wrapped up in her grandmother that I didn't feel like her true personality was ever really explored.

  • @ashbooks7281

  • @kaylammas

k, i 100% agree with you on the instalove thing that happened between Wolf and Scarlet. Is it like a wolf thing? Like freaking Jacob from Twilight imprinted on a dang fetus, and then Wolf goes and falls in love with Scarlet in the matter of a week... seriously is it a wolf thing like does legend hold that this instalove thing is inevitable? Believe me, man, if you couldn't stand the instalove in this book, good luck in Cress.
K BUT SEE MY PROBLEM WAS NOT WOLF OR SCARLET OR ANY OF THAT as a matter of fact i preferred that over Kai. Kai infuriates me! AND in Cress. Like he doesn't have any backbone, and he completely lets everyone else TELL HIM WHAT TO THINK AND HOW HE THINKS! It's like he doesn't have the free will to form is own opinions on Cinder, and it really really bugged me throughout this entire book as well as Cress. Like I can't get over how much I cannot stand Kai. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I feel it very strongly.

Same opinions. But to be Scarlet seemed more like the selfish one because she was so willing to risk her life and Wolf's (aka Ze'ev), all because she wanted to save her grand-mere. If she wanted you to rescue her and know about the whole the Lunar drama she would have to you, Scar, like come on. Stubborn, Crass(Insensitive towards wolf's drama) , Aggressive, Relentless, Loud, Endearing, Lonely and Taut, are some of my thoughts to describe SCARLET.

  • @traecrayz
    @traecrayz 8 лет назад +2

I enjoyed Scarlet. it was fun to read. But the loveydovey thing was actually cute. But it was normal for wolf, having the instincts of a wolf, he does kind of need an "alpha female" to watch. Thorne kind of drove me crazy. He was kind of flirting at the wrong time. that was unsettling. But having Cinder come back with having Thorne, I couldn't help but laugh a few times. I think she and Thorne worked well together, but I still think Cinder and Kai are still # 1, even if Kai was a bit of a jerk at the ball and a bit in the beginning of the book.
honestly, now I can't wait to read Cress.

Wolf was a bit insta love....because he is a wolf hybrid and they have mates and such. I felt like Scarlet was starting to get to know Wolf and start a relationship with him which made me want more. BUT I LOVE ALL CINDER PARTS. I MEAN SHE IS MY FAVE AND WE GOT IKO BACK!!!! 🙌
I didn't know Marissa Meyer wrote Sailor Moon fanfic?!

That's funny because I'm thinking all the opposite. I found Cinder very annoying with her superpowers. I was like : YOU CAN CONTROL THE PEOPLE. JUST DO IT ! But I loved Scarlet and Wolf, they are amazing and I love their romance. Finally, Thorne (is it his name, I'm not sure), is special. I thought he was just an extra character with a vehicle. And that's why is important, his vehicle....
That's really funny to see the different opinions ! Great video !

I find it funny that I believe that opposite to be true. I didn't like Cinder in the first book and I still didn't like reading her chapters in the second book. Everyone always talks about how she is so strong and unique and I didn't really feel that way. I want to pick up Cress but it just isn't at the top of my TBR right now. And even though it was a little insta lovey I liked their relationship way more than Kai and Cinder. Neither of their characters made a big enough impression on me to have me ship them.

I didn't realize she used to write sailor moon fan fic!!! That makes so much sense! That's actually the main reason why I fell in love with this series I think.
I actually don't really like Cinder or Kai that much. I'm pretty meh about them, so I think that's why I loved this book so much more! I loved Scarlet and especially Wolf. I think I'm very opposite of most people in this but that's ok. I didn't like Thorne at first, I kind of thought he was annoying, but I like him a lot more in Cress :)

When I read Cinder, I instantly fell in love with the series. At first I kept figuring out parts of the book to the original tale, which made me love this book series a lot more.
As I went straight into Scarlet, I was mostly trying to find the links to the original story and how Marissa Meyer interpreted in the books. I agree with you that I prefer Cinder than Scarlet but when I read Cress, I loved that book even more.
Great video, I agree with your points of Scarlet and I wished there was more Cinder chapters in Scarlet but I did enjoy reading the book xx

I like Wolf, because his feelings are just so intense so quickly in a believable way to me I guess.(thanks Lunar researchers)
But Scarlet. You said what I thought, outside of desperation for her grand-mere and growing feelings for Wolf she was meh for me. She definitely had very high moments for me, but I kind of feel like she's a more useful Daphne to Cinder's Velma...lol
BUT CINDER I LOVE HER AND HER GROWTH OMG. And Thorne is perf. I adore him.
I'm looking forward to your thoughts on Cress and Fairest. :)

YOU'RE SO RIGHT ABOUT THE SAILOR MOON FEELS!
We also has the same feel about Scarlet's character. I think she's quite impulsive and always blame someone for her misfortune. It's annoying. Specially the scene in the end in which she's accusing Cinder. I was like, WTH Scarlet, after she saved your neck from those lunars! =__=
Scarlet and Wolf's mushy scene in the spaceship and Iko's been hearing their conversation is so hilarious XD
You better read Cress! The storyline in that book is freakin awesome. Though Cinder is still my favorite character among the three XD

I will say that I as well didn't like Scarlet or Wolf as characters nearly as much as I love Cinder,Kai,Thorne,Iko, and Cress (like um all the other main characters.) but the reason why I loved Scarlet as a book more was because of the moments that we did get from Cinder and the way that the plot developed was just SO FRIKIN AWESOME and I just love how everything came together at the end and how Cinder started learning how to control her powers and that scene right before they get into the ship when she controls that one guy (i think. Haven't read the book in a while.) was just genius. But Cress is definitely my favorite installment in the series. I think you'll like that one better. I love Thorne so much. And Cress is just so adorable.

I must agree with you as far as the romance plot. It was progressing nicely until....the train. My theory however, is that Wolf's hybrid genes may contribute to the instalove. If you know how wolf packs work, beyond the hybrids from Scarlet, you realize that the way in which wolves go about choosing their mates, especially in the alpha pair, is very much instalove. Or in their case instawedlock. Not that that's an excuse...
Also, I was wondering if you'd read Cress yet. The girl I usually discuss books with thinks Cinder is creepy and weird, so I think it would be interesting to hear your opinion.

me too. i enjoyed cinder more than i did scarlet. we were left with the big reveal at the end of cinder and we were excited about what she's going to do next and the scarlet's storyline felt a little like an annoying distraction. However Cinder & Thorne moments were hilarious

Cinder to me was soo boring!
I actually refused to read it for a while but I finally finished it.
    By Scarlet tho!
SCARLET REALLY PULLED ME TO READ MORE
sure she didn’t have much of a personality, but I still care more about her, then I do Cinder.

I so feel ya! I had the hardest time connecting with Scarlet and spent the whole book wanting more Cinder. And the insta love was horrible. Normally I don't agree with people when they comment on insta love but in this case it was horrid. Thankfully Cress is sooo much better in my opinion.

  • @maritzacastro6977

Ahh, same! I loved chaoters with Cinder a but more than the chapters with Scarlet. I still loved Scarlet's character but I thought she was a bit too passionate and head strong, like she couldn't understand when she was in danger. The insta-love made me so confused, like he is partially the reason your grandmother is dead and you love him?! Yeah...heh...anyways, I think you'll like Cress better. Personally my favorite is Cinder, then Cress, and then Scarlet.

I loved this book cuz of the love scenes i always really like love in fantasie books because it isnt forced down your throuth and it doesnt seem that weird to me that scarlet and wolf are in love with her grand mere gone she would be sad and need someone to comfort her aka wolf it makes sense she wants to stay with wolf cuz she feels safe with him

I loved Scarlet because She reminds me of myself. I feel like I'm kinda piss and vinegar like her and I love how she's best friends with her grandma cuz it reminds me of how I was with my grandpa. I actually totally forgot about the ending with Wolf confessing his feelings to her and even though I don't remember that part it actually sounds really cheesy XD I think that with Cinder we got to see more of her personality because it was so in her world for the whole book and we got to see her entire life the way She lives it normally, and with Scarlet it got thrusted into her journey so quickly that we didn't really get to see anything about her but her worrying for her grandmother and her on the life death adventure. I'm not too far in Cress yet but I am currently reading it and so far I actually really didn't like Scarlet in it cuz I feel like her personality changed and She doesn't haven't as much of a role. Hopefully she'll get more moments to shine and show more of her personality in Winter and Stars Above.

I gave this a 3.5 because while it was a fun read - I didn't really get anything from Scarlet in terms of characterization. She's dedicated to her grandmother in an extremely single-minded way but apart from that kind of nothing. I loved the scene between Scarlet and Cinder - Cinder won't take any shit because seriously she found out about her princess-ness a week ago...and she was in jail for half of it. I had that exact problem with the wolf/scarlet thing- it was so good and just BAM THE INSTALOVE...why...
I DEFINITELY feel the Sailor Moon vibes - no shame, I love it.
