      This is actually really good one. you see he;s using the thumb grip. He;s throwing the knife sideways. it seems unnatural, but it actually slow down the spin, thus giving the knife a better chance to stick.

    Good opinion and good teaching. You mention throwing like a baseball or football. That is exactly what I do. I use ballistic gel and I wind up like a baseball pitcher and throw the knife at 80mph through a chronograph. When I hit the ballistic gel depending on the knife design it goes through bones and most of the time the knife is deeply buried or goes through the gel.

    Hi - I've been throwing knives for some years now - you have found your own style - I see that in the video you are throwing by the blade at about one and a half turns - also that the blade is landing on average to the right of the target , this is because you are moving on the throw in a twisting motion - - you might find that standing side on will help - - I find throwing by the blade under arm at the 1/12 distance accurate - the weight of the handle will drive the blade in - it looks good as well - but my favorite is by the handle at 2 turns - for me I throw with my hand level with my ear - good to see someone throwing and enjoying it - it's all personal and whatever works -

  • @cristiansosa1512

    Also, a tip that doesn't appear in the video, is that you need to give direction with the wrist, while moving the arm in a straight line. The more steady you can keep your arm, the more steady the flight of the knife will be.
    A lot of muscle memory too, as you have to judge how much force it will require to hit with the tip of the knife, from X distance.

Each of these techniques requires a LOT of practice and they are BASICALLY the same, with a difference in the balance of the blade! Both ways are correct but, they do take practicing both techniques or you won't be accurate with both!

    Thanks for the tip about holding the blade loosely so it "slips." Two question: does the knife blade need to be heavier than the handle? Is there a certain distance for each revolution of the knife. For example, if the knife is going to rotate once, do you stand about two steps away or what. Then for each revolution, you move another two steps away: e.g you stand two steps away, 4 steps away, 6 steps away, et cetera in order for the blade to enter the wood first. Lastly I imagine you practice with a soft wood like pine. Thanks in advance for answering my questions.

      10-12 feet because throwing by the blade, launching handle forward: One 180 rotation to next point forward. Handle throw starts point forward at 0 feet, so it requires two 180 rotations to be point forward again: 20-24 feet...

    • @adamstation2281
      @adamstation2281 8 лет назад +1

      learn to gauge the rotation. at those distances I personally like a weight forward blade hold handle, zero rotation. straight line lazer.
      at distances rotation comes into play as the natural effect of the force behind the throw. this rotation must be gauged and weighed against the balance of the knife to determine spin. I was taught no wrist snap. open your hand and let it out. a weight forward blade will almost always "pull" itself tip first to the target.

    • @TroubleGummie
      @TroubleGummie 8 лет назад

      There is a technique, I know it isn't used by this throw but when you release it you let your fingers brush against the handle (or blade) and let it slip to negate the spin.

    I was watching a fellow on you tube throwing spin style. He was trying to demonstrate the relation of distance to number of spins by moving back and forth to the target yet holding the knife basically at the same place but he had done it for so long that his body unconsciously was adjusting the spin and he had a devil of a time trying to get the knife NOT to stick. Which convinced me all those who say a professional or adept spin style knife thrower has to consciously know his exact distance are wrong. That was about a year ago and the video is probably still online. Check it out.

    Something they may or may not of said is when throwing you was to put some force downward as well it's a forward force depending on your target length away. Your forward will more that your downward. The downward is purely for spin but if not don't right it will hit handle or flat it's Ballance of it all and judgement

    Half spin throwing is too dependent upon distance. Too much risk in a combat situation. No spin is king. .

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 8 лет назад +2

      No-spin knife throwing is too dependent upon the balance of the knife to work all the time. If you've got a good set of properly balanced knives, then have at it, but look at the knives the're throwing. They're only balanced in two directions, not three.
      A spinning blade is also somewhat more resistant to losing accuracy as they get chipped as there's a bit of angular momentum to resist changes in direction that a no-spin throw doesn't give you.
      If you've got a dedicated knife for the throwing, then there's nothing wrong with no-spin, but if you're wanting to make other use of the knife or use one that's not balanced in all three directions, you're going to be spinning the blade.
      But, realistically, any sort of knife throwing is a niche tactic. You shouldn't even think about throwing against somebody if you don't know and understand the situation.

    I watched a Systema video on knife throwing, I was self teaching myself how to throw a knife without a handle, the throw was meant for the knife to leave the hand and the knife not spin while in midair. It took me a couple hundred throws but eventually I got it. I'm not a master, but I can hit my target at four meters away (I know it's nothing special, but I'm still practicing)

    I would have loved to have learned to throw a knife properly when i was young and able to twist my body around. Just that motion, with any "force" behind it would see me collapsing to my knees, in pain.
    All that said, I really enjoyed your video, thanks, and will pass it onto my son who is still young, fit and very capable.
    Thanks again buddy and good luck with your future videos!

    Is there any way to ensure that the blade hits rather than the handle?

    • @trombonista92

      no, its all by feel, you could put fletching on the handle, but than it becomes dart and the trowing tecnique changes compleatly

      Tiffany There is a throwing method where you throw the knife straight, but that, in my experience, doesn't have the same power or distance as the normal throwing.

    • @-BananaLollipop-
      @-BananaLollipop- 10 лет назад +2

      I haven't tried knife throwing much, but from my experience when you try and put too much force behind the throw is when it twists or spins too fast and makes it more likely for the handle to hit, or for it to hit at an angle where it wont stick.
      Could just be me, but I feel you don't have to put all your weight and power behind the throw. Just make a nice smooth action.

      A proper knife allows some margin of error in the technique. It should be balanced in such a way that it corrects itself blade forward for a little bit, if this makes any sense :)

    • @NathCraft27
      @NathCraft27 10 лет назад +1

      The only way is to ensure you'll hit is by estimating your distance to the target, then you'll find how much distance it takes you to hit a half-spin, full spin, 1.5 spin, etc and then you'll know at exactly wich distance you'll hit and wich way you'll hold the knife (blade or handle). Anyways, if you really want to learn you should look for tutorials by EpicBladeTime or Xolette, this is the way I learnt and I can tell you that they know what they are doing (unlike this guy in the vid).

      mariofan6495 Russian special forces were all issued a ballistic knife, which is a knife but there is a trigger on the side which allows you to launch the blade, it is a weapon which is outlawed almost everywhere and you can't even get a licence for them in the US.

    I have been throwing knives and screwdrivers and other tools for decades. The one factor they are not discussing is distance. Notice his distance is always the same for him. You need to find your distance as well. Everyone has a different distance from target. Another consideration is this.. If you throw the knife and miss or hit a not lethal target, be prepared to shoot and kill the target because now they have your knife or screw driver.

    Depending on what styles of knife throwing you are using.... I think it is a useful skill. If you have no knife on you, you may find yourself in an environment with other miscellaneous objects and being in a situation where you are under attack. If you can stick a knife into someone by throwing it, you can stick a metal shurikan into them, and if you can do that you can stick a pencil or pen into them. It won't kill them, of course, but it will hurt and buy you time. It may ever cause them to turn and run if you are throwing lots of things like that at them. It may be annoying to dodge pillows, lamps, and the like. But it will HURT when you have a pencil sticking into your arm. And if the guy can do that with one, then you can bet others are coming. It can be a useful skill. It is just a matter of perspective. You might throw these objects as you move away to escape. Creating distance is always more desirable than going in with your knife. I don't think I would throw my knife. I would keep my knife and throw something else found in the environment.

We learned knifes, axes, shovels and rocks basically anything that can be thrown accurately, they showed us how!!! I'm still pretty good having kept up the practice off and on over the years!!! I can bounce a rock off a stray dogs ribs at 100' LOL!! But hay, it ain't that hard, just relax and point your finger!!!

    I would love to try this but I don’t know what knife to get. Is that some sort of standard military issue for the United States as well as Russia? I mean do I look for a certain length or weight or balance? You’re doing this with a regular knife instead of a “throwing knife “so I’m a little confused being a complete noob. Please advise.

    Does the knife rotate end over end? Do you try to make that happen? What is the definition of a good throwing knife? I know a dedicated throwing knife is balanced, the handle weighs as much as the blade, but that is unrealistic for military knives (they have a handle with a grip). What is a standard length knife in the Russian army? Total length and blade length. You English is extremely good.

    now that you've thrown your knife, you no longer have it in your hands, regardless if it sticks into your target or not. with no knife you are far less dangerous than if you simply skip the knife-throwing in the 1st place. throw a rock if you must throw something. but keep your knife in your hand!

    kgb survivalist this is kinda a question. the technique for throwing a knife would be in a way same as throwing a card but instead of throwing horizontally you'd be doing a overhand with some added weight on one side correct? just double checking incase i ever need the knife throwing skill
