Oh man Gary, I think like you too. I walk around and wonder about people all that time. I was born in the Netherlands and came to Canada at the age of 4. I am now 65 and realize that I should have been 'flipping' beautiful old stuff all my life. I've been in and out of that for decades, each time running after 'making more money'. Buying and selling is in my blood and there is nothing else that makes me feel so complete. Now, I am flipping for life and I am so happy!!!

You gotta go out there and fail forward. Failure is part of learning, if you never fail at anything then you're not moving forward. They key is learning from your mistakes and getting better, adjusting and fine tuning.

This is exactly what my dad did for me and I'm tremendously grateful. I wanted to drop out of an undergrad to start a talent agency -- he said go for it! but I'm not paying -- so I tried and failed (market said no) and I learned and now I'm graduating my undergrad this fall while running a successful photo/video production company and moving to Italy in the new year for a master's degree. You never know until you try and you gain humility and perspective from failing and moving forward. Love this video and your message as always.

Peep the lesson behind the lesson: The first 13-14 years of his life like most, he realized his talents for business and leadership. Let’s assume he started running more day to day operations for the company after college, let’s say 22-24 years old. So from 14 to 22-24 years old he learned to hone his work ethic and operational skills for about 8-10 years. So don’t be discouraged that you’ve “wasted” time, even Gary ver that natural had to go through his 10 year mastery apprenticeship. The formula goes as followed: Find your talent or passion. Then spend the next 8-10 years honing your fields necessary skills and develop an insane work ethic.

I want to chime in because I really get this. I had zero direction and had enough jobs to qualify for a Guinness record. I had the worst grades and lowest GPA. I had a difficult, abusive childhood. I developed a deep, dark depression. Then, the culmination of my being, homelessness. If I would have had a happy childhood, been an excellent student, and held a job or career, I would not have had anything to write about. All my losses seem like losses individually, but when I look at my understanding of human nature and life, there's so much that flows from me that's genuine and invaluable to others that I'm grateful to be able to expose my wounds, so that others can arm themselves with valuable insights, like the ones we learn here on GaryVee TV. It's nuts what they are capable of . they made me look like a bad person to everyone I ever knew and know everything I'm doing at every minute so I can't live this way I can't work or talk about it or see anyone that is not a life trust me and they get me to develop things that are worth billions and can help the world but won't let me do anything with it or tell anyone I fight every day all day thinking that they will stop if I do the teaching but they don't and mind fuck me saying I will never do anything with my life but I try every day they take my work when I get it done so if I can't get help I'm going to end up mentally fucked or dead I can't work to get anything I'm being held hostage in away because u can't put in an application for a job there u have to do it online it doesn't work cuz they cut off my calls and texts and fb so I'm stuck no one will believe me and I can't reach out online.

I was pushed to be an athlete for most of my 22 years alive. I became National Champion of Colombia, All-American, D1 but absolutely hated it. However as an immigrant hispanic male I was pushed to continue. Finally in college I had 2 tears which led to shoulder surgery. I left school, moved to Italy started studying art, moved to NYC and 3 years later I'm a Celebrity & Fashion Photographer, something I would have never imagined, love, and just shot my first Major Campaign which was the 25th Anniversary Viva Glam Campaign with Winnie Harlow. Break out of the box you're placed in, just because someone is older does not mean they know better. Trust yourself and the process.

3:13 you’re right my daughter 13 loves dance and has experience as a news anchor from 3-5th grade and now on the dance team in 8th grade. I asked her if she wanted me to get her on the news or radio as a volunteer to see it is behind the scenes. She gave me a look 🤨🤔😒 i said ok clearly that’s a No. we went to a shark tank event here in Vegas there was a girl pitching her dance program my daughter voted for this girl, wanted to meet her AND asked me if she could volunteer as a choreographer in her program. I said sure it’s your choice and that’s what she did summer 2019 when it ended she said mom that was FUN😃 I said ok now I’m understanding what motivates you. I honestly think my daughter is going to do something with dance when she gets older. She says she like news anchoring smh I just don’t see the drive or motivation there like it is with dance, and I’m ok with that. It’s her life.

My problem is I’m very impulsive and I don’t like responsibility and have never been good with it which is why I’ve never held a stable job as I’m very sporadic driven and adventurous and hate monotony in the form of force. I like lifting weights, practicing boxing as hobby, consuming cannabis, playing video games, chasing girls, and making computer beats here and there on the side when musically inspired, so I think I was meant to make my purpose out of that combination of things so I think I will give it a shot and figure out some ways to monetize those interests. I appreciate the inspiring talks Gary.

The problem I see is there is such a big generational gap between our parents and our generation. The paradigm has changed and our parents are still stuck in their old belief systems and habits. The hardest thing for US is to say “ma or pa it’s time I make my own decisions and I just can’t take you along my journey, it’s time we part”.

  • @Blujonny11

Gary's way oversimplifying things. When I was 14 I loved playing drums and by the time I was 18 even my school music teacher was telling me I had the greatest 'crushed' snare drum 'roll' he had seen in all his teaching years. But after high school I was bored with drums and didn't pursue it further though later I was casually in a band. But now I believe I'm a better creative writer than I ever was a drummer and have more passion for it. The point is when you're 14 it rarely matters what your passion is. Passions change once you hit adulthood. And you usually have enough space from your parents to discover passions in your late teenage years anyhow.

What if you just don't know what you want to do, idk at this point I feel like I've hit rock bottom as I don't know what I wanna go into and everyone is pushing things onto me and I just dont know. I'm doing collage even though I'm not sure why, well I might find it useful to have and I've come from a poor country where my parents struggled to put food on the table as they had me in their teen years and decided they're gonna get me to have a good future plus my 2 other sisters. I just feel like shit and I feel like I've made my parents disappointed, well especially my dad since he askes me on what I want to do or have a got a gf and I simply have no answer idk I just dont know myself anymore, after a heart break I had I was just depressed asf every day for a long ass time and now I feel like a empty shell with everything going wrong like i feel alone even though there are people and I have a mom and a dad which I'm lucky for but I still have moments where I feel so damn alone

Nothing is a distraction, it's only a perception

I don't agree. Scrolling through FB during hours and hours when you could be doing something about your dream is a distraction, is wasting time, and one can get to the realization that time was lost but sometimes is late and you cannot bring back time.
Passions are not distractions, creating and learning are not distractions, but dedicating time to losing time is.

You have a misconception. If someone is destined to be an artist. It doesn’t matter what their parents do, or if they spend some time as an engineer.
That’s a misunderstanding of what it means to be an artist. If you don’t follow through, because of parents, you were never going to be an artist.
