  • Oil, Ore, & Factories in Industries DLC | The Ultimate Beginners Guide to Cities Skylines #6
If you've been struggling to get started building a thriving city, I'm here to help! In this episode I'll show you how to use the Industries DLC to create import based oil and ore industries that make a ton of money for your city. Further, we'll create a massive industrial park to process all of the goods that we're producing. We'll also explore creating redundant connections and add in our first tolls. Finally, we'll also add approximately 5,000 to the city's population by adding onto the city near the zoo. Enjoy!
    ** Series Structure **
The structure of the series will be as follows: 5,000 population added per episode, a new DLC/CPP/Mod Set added every two episodes in the following order:
    1. Vanilla
    2. Parklife
    3. Industries (YOU ARE HERE)
    4. Campus
    5. Mass Transit
    6. After Dark
    7. Green Cities
    8. Sunset Harbor
    9. Snowfall
    10. Natural Disasters
    11. CCP
    12. Basic Mods
Topics covered in this episode include: initial freeway interchange, layout out a basic grid, zoning, providing adequate services, using districts, and policies.

      Dear
      City Planner Plays
Could you please do a separate video where you discus, what you do as a city planner, what are the challenges etc. In my opinion you bring a lot of interest into this career, for example ever since I've started watching you I also started to think more about the construction of cities and the ideas behind them. Next year I want to study City planning. So yeah I think It would be great if you do a video about your career.

All the finished goods factories are pretty general, like Furniture and stuff, but then one is as specific as Lemonade? That’s like two orders of specificity greater than expected: Produce->Fruit->Fruit Beverages->Lemonade. While furniture would go: Timber->Furniture; and basically stops there. I’m not doing the best job of describing an odd thing. But I thought it funny that one of the factories is so specific while the others are so general.
I cannot thank you enough (well I could give you money…) for this series! It has been incredibly helpful. Made the game so much more fun for me. I can actually play the game instead of either watching my city burn… or turn on infinite money so that I can build the thing I’m imagining. But now I can actually play the game! I can actually develop successfully, to get rich enough to do the stuff I want! It’s great! I’ve watched each video twice… so yeah… I’ve spent some hours listening to your voice. But very very helpful! Thank you!

Actually, the weak local collector/feeder network has been one of my main gripes about this city the whole time. Early on, it made sense, but past 10k, collector networks need to be emphasized and planned for early as possible. I often start thinking of collector networks in earliest road-planning. Same with rails and the like. I hate having to rip apart a big chunk of downtown to add in extra lanes or the like. Intra-city surface trains are extremely difficult to plan for early on, because you don't have the assets, but you kind of have to if you don't want to bulldoze dozens of buildings when you get the assets.
LOVE THIS SERIES! Have been learning soooo much and I've been playing since 2015 xD

The bridges around NYC don't always have a toll booth in both directions. It's typically just in one direction (I "think" going into NYC). This would charge those commuting into the city but not leaving the city. This encourages commuters to use mass transit since theoretically it would cost less. Using the automatic toll both policy helps increase flow (referring to C:S).

I have only been to NYC as a tourist twice, but the transit actually works there (unlike my town where you wait an hour for a bus instead of walking 15 minutes :D) I spent about 20 days total in NYC and never used a taxi cab or über during that time. Subway (and the Jitney busses between NJ/NY) was the way to go. Also made a few trips by train to the Long Island side.
On the toll booths: I believe Amsterdam in the Netherlands has a similar system where going into the heart of the city costs a lot more than using public transport -> reducing car traffic -> less pollution -> more bicycles (and they have A LOT of those in The Netherlands)

Your next challenge should be more personal: make a city that works exactly like it did on the first 2 or 3 episodes of Bluffside crossing which I've been re-watching lately which was just focusing on you know, city planning, with 0 attention paid to insane grading, people biking their way up almost 45 degree angle hills, cemeteries and landfills almost falling off a cliff due to being so tilted, etc.
See how much you can let go of that powerful itch to spend most of the time fixing grading.

If he has, I can imagine how torturous it must be trying to keep everything realistic, like under 10%. This game lets you do 30%+ no questions asked. "Slope too steep" is an annoying problem but it's already comical by that point in terms of real life standards.

You need to build up a city to support the parks, the parks make the city very desirable, and then you can build up your industry because enough people will actually want to move to your city to fill those jobs, and after that you have lots of renewable money to dive into future dlc’s with.

In hindsight, I paid little attention to where my extractor buildings were, except for being on top of the corresponding resource, and put my processor buildings everywhere else.. paying no mind to how the extractors would generate traffic headed for the processors, or warehouses and so on. Trying to manage the traffic on the whole was driving me nuts and while i still did manage to get it from 50's to high 70's, maybe I could do better by being better arranging the grid and buildings themselves.

Hey! First of all, I have to tell you I absolutely love this series and you're the reason I've started playing the Cities and I'm not doing too bad thanks to all your tips. It's great to listen to you and watch your city develop! But I've noticed that when I reached the population of around 26,500 I kind of stuck - whenever the population grows by 50-100, then it shrinks. Also, I have quite a lot of abandoned buildings in the city (that I keep bulldozing) and I've noticed this doesn't happen to you at all. I'd be extremely grateful if you could give me some tip what I'm doing wrong :)

I found that the oil derrick had the highest output per area. I once made the mistake of having a "small" cluster of around 150 derricks. The massive volume of oil truck backlogged my large oil industry and cargo terminals. Doesn't help I had despawning off, so it was quite the challenge, but was pretty funny nonetheless.

The comments around the toll booth made we wonder what your thoughts are around things like meter ramps where stoplights are used to balance the flow of traffic on a highway or interstate. Or the variable speed limit approaches that some regions use. I don't feel like Cities simulates these things terribly well besides being various shades of "good" or "bad" but I'd be interested how much, if at all, those types of things go into actual city planning.

Totally helpful series for a complete beginner. I've tried to build Tutoria in parallel and it's looking similar if not identical! Can't get my head around the wonderfully smooth road building you do!. I have a problem onPart 6: I can't get any action happening on the ore industry - the grindinh mills say 'not enough raw materials' and therefore the ore and sand storage don't fill - which means no glass or steel.. Is there a way to encourage imports of these goods given that there is no natural resource available? Thanks

I think I would give a little more space between the zoo and the residential or at least give the residential some trees just so they have a little more privacy from park goers. If I could I would mulligan those houses and maybe put a line of commercial. Nobody wants to wake up in the middle of the night to a lion roaring haha

Using the power to reduce those oil industries at 27:10 to place the large scale would be WillCS consolidating and purchasing small scale industries to make room for their expansion.
It is not really eminent domain the same way as demolishing a neighbourhood for a new road.
    At least in my book.
In my city where I try to preserve "everything" I realised it was impossible to save the first industrial area, it had become part of the central town (even after I mostly successfully rerouted traffic away from a congested two lane high street). So I rezoned it with offices and some high density commercial, creating a more lively downtown area. (after decontamination at least). Did place the industry unique building there to commemorate the history of the area.
In real life, you see old red brick factory buildings repurposed for low density commercial use, but since there is no progress in time things get replaces instead, which is a bit of a shane.

I really wish you could do roads underneath the waterpipes (without tunneling). And that petrochemical district could use some internal pipelines (is the game simulating that or are they driving trucks between the buildings?).
