I flew three times on a 707, and once on a DC-8. The 707 was fine, not very different from flying on a modern 737 (the fuselage cross-section and the nose are exactly the same, actually), except that it was long-haul and had more primitive but more comfortable seats with more legroom. I hated the DC-8 because of the aircon. Too dry, my nostrils hurt.

You were lucky they had a spare plane. We got on a Qatar Airways A380 in Sydney about 5 years ago. It was broken too. They tinkered with it for about 3 hours, then offloaded us all and sent us home. They eventually found me a seat two days later, which totally disrupted our travel plans. No compensation of any sort, of course.

"Don't book flights from London" Couldn't agree more. Based on this, I was looking at an Air Canada flight from London first class in October this year, approx. £1700, booking the same flight but coming via a connecting flight from Dublin, almost half price at approx. £900. Same flight, same class, but adding a flight on from Dublin made it almost half price. I'd have had to make a connecting flight from Glasgow so to go via Dublin is very much worth the additional faff. Absolutely bizarre pricing!

Yeah, that's a major welcome to Cairo. I was there not too long ago, and I recall our tour representative doing the same thing. But thanks for taking the aircraft breakdown in stride. I used to hate it when people got angry about that stuff. It's not the crews fault, and we are essentially suffering with you. I don't know how Qatar's pay structure works, but in the US, when similar happens, we aren't getting paid to deal with it. In fact we could be losing pay. But also too, while you were baking up stairs, I have to wonder how the people in steerage, I mean coach were doing with probably 300+ people down there. I also have to wonder why they didn't turn the packs on. The APU could easily cool the aircraft down.

I am currently booked for a direct flight IAD - CPH. I could have saved money connecting through CPH to HAM, but the train back to CPH was more than the savings. I'm always looking for those kinds of deals when I'm booking. My favorite trick is flying between major hubs, but connecting through a very small airport that both hubs serve on separate airlines. Back in 1998, I saved 100 USD flying DFW - ORD but with a stop in Des Moines.

For most who use Business Class, time is key. Let's say, a working day of advisory or consulting or so costs a few thousand (US, EU or UK - whatever currency). But you choose a flight that costs a day extra - that just doesn't match up. You need to be there asap as the client is wondering what's next. Flights need to be short, door to door, to save business money. Of course, second to that, they shouldn't be too expensive either!
