They rented a nice little convertable & drove to small towns & wineries & stayed on old estates where the owners rent out rooms to pay for the upkeep & serve meals & of course wine. ITA should have given you another glass of proseco for being 1 hr late! The plane looked very nice & the food even better!!! It does feel strange to return to a place you once lived as a visitor. Enjoy your time & say hi to the King for me! My late hubby loved going to the pubs when he was in London on business. The people couldn't believe the "Yank" liked football & watched it on the telly with them . Of course, he enjoyed a pint or 2....& a steak as well.

When we lived in Malaysia when I was a child, there were many things we were asked to bring back to the other Brits living in our village. They included- Clark’s school shoes, gingham checked school dresses (it was a British school so British school uniforms), marmite, Cadburys chocolate, walkers crisps and PG tips! It was also the early/ mid 90’s so no security so people would sneak bacon, black pudding and gammon in their hand luggage (usually in clean nappies) to get them through. Easier than driving over the border into Thailand to buy them. Always felt odd having a suitcase full of British food (company paid luggage fees) and my grandma always got us in chippy dinner the night we got there. Nothing beats fish and chip shop chips from the UK!

16:09 I say it was more famous as the place the French Emperor Napoleon was exiled to after his forced abdication following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, and conveyed to the island on HMS Undaunted by Captain Thomas Ussher; he arrived at Portoferraio on 4 May 1814.
He was allowed to keep a personal guard of 400 men and was nominally sovereign of Elba, a step down from Emperor of the French. However, the nearby sea was patrolled by the French and British navies to ensure he could not escape.
During the months that he stayed on the island, Napoleon carried out a series of economic and social reforms to improve the quality of life. After staying for almost ten months, he managed to escape back to France on 26 February 1815 with about 1,000 men.

As a Londoner for over 30 years, I can attest to the fact that there are very few decent chippies in London. Almost all of them try to support an over-extensive menu covering far more than fish & chips, like kebabs, burgers, chicken etc rather than doing one thing well.

Born in England. Moved to US when I was 2. Love some proper British fish and chips, and tried it everywhere in the US only to be disappointed every time. Then a few years back I was in Gibraltar and took a taxi (really a tour guide) up the rock and around the island, and he dropped us off at a chippy in Gibraltar. So I asked him, “I’ve been searching for good fish and chips in the US for years and can’t find any. The fish looks amazing, but then it’s so disappointing when I eat it.” He says it’s not the fish, it’s the malt vinegar. US malt vinegar (it’s usually Heinz) isn’t the same as British malt vinegar. So I bought so Sarson’s on Amazon and took it with me to get some US fish and chips. Sure as hell, it was way better. Something about US malt vinegar being more acidic and British malt vinegar being less acidic and more sweet……whatever it was it made the difference. Give it a whirl. Keep up the great content.

I had to stop and breathe after just minute 3:00 - it's the reason why I hate flying these days. I can't handle crowds anymore (thank you fibromyalgia and social anxiety for that) But I'm so so so lucky that I got to fly a lot during the 80's and 90's, so I live with those memories. And travelling to the UK; I'm not British but grew up watching the BBC (Blue Peter, Biker Grove, Eastenders ...) so I feel like it's my 2nd home. I can't wait to drink Ribena, have a nice sarnie, and a packet of salt & vinegar crisps. That's coming home for me!

For sausage in the States, you just need to find German/Polish parts. I grew up in a very German part of Southern Indiana and sausages galore. They even have a blood sausage, which I think is very close to English black pudding.

There used to be a good Fish & Chips in Richardson, Texas on Coit Road called Fish & Fizz, run by a guy from Cornwall. They were sadly forced to close back in January as their landlord wasn't willing to negotiate a price for the location that they could afford. But for those 5 years, they'd gone strong.

I've flown them back and forth to Japan this year, on their A350, and it was the worst experience I've had so far with an airline. The crew did not interact with the passengers at all, they were impatient and one of the cabin crew was smoking an electronic cigarette in the aft galley. I will avoid them as much as I can.
