Fellow Xennial here. I feel you 100% on this. I've made all the excuses in tne book and bought so much gear over the years. It never got me to actually get started. Allowing myself to suck at first and to practice publicly is what got me to actually sit down and record something, edit it to make it look somewhat coherent, and post it. None of the perfectionism and gear got me there.
Thanks for this so much. I’m hesitant and I’m so stuck on what the heck to make content about. I have so many interests and there’s so many styles, I have no idea who to talk to and what to say
Yup 🙋♀️ I have used all those excuses before. Know this… even after years of making videos that feeling of inadequacy and imposter syndrome may not ever go away. ❤ Love to all my fellow 40 something creators!
I've had the gear forever, but thought I wanted to be "cinematic" like many of the big youtubers. I finally figured out that I don't have enough time in my life to shoot and edit that way. It wasn't until I bought the Osmo Pocket 3 that I really found the comfort level I was looking for. I don't like using my phone for a variety of reasons, but many are good at it.
I just did a similar video this morning because my home was totally chaotic so I ended up in a park. lol. I really like how it came out as well. I think I'll be doing more of that...plus I enjoyed it.
8:24 This is 100% true ! I have thousands $ of gear accumulated those last 10 years. And yet I never really started a RUclips channel with consistency. I have created podcasts though because I felt it easier than talking into a camera, as you can just read a script. But I always say to my fellow nurses and health workers : if you want to start a side hustle, you have a smartphone and you don’t need ANYTHING else really. All those fancy gears won’t help you start. That’s why on my actual channel I now publish videos recorded with no specific lighting, and just an Oslo Pocket 3, into a Vlogging format. And yet I’m also a photographer so I have all the gear necessary to have a clean RUclips setup. But I understood that the easiest setup you chose, the less obstacles you have to record a video.
I can never figure out what I want to talk about and really don’t want to talk about my work haha. What I think I would talk about is over saturated. That’s what holds me back
Haha I was just about to make a nirvana comment. Cuz I see young people wearing nirvana and sublime tee shirts and have no clue. This was a great and inspiring video! The fact you did this with bo cuts is great!!! Keep it up!!
Girl, you are calling me out! Starting a channel has been on my mind since seeing #doughdash talk about it a few weeks ago. I turned 50 this year and I know I have some wisdom to share but the perfectionism so so strong I haven't done it yet. Thanks for the encouraging words!
I would love to have 20 people 😂. I’m starting slow and steady with only videos like this, shot straight through with no editing as I have no idea what I am doing. I even accidentally deleted my whole channel and 4 videos already uploaded (don’t ask it was such a crazy mistake) I love your energy and back to basic approach and advice.
I like that you mentioned Jade and Alexa. I've been watching lots of their videos as well. Thank you for your very transparent and authentic content. It's helping me and I know many others get that much closer to getting started.
The perfectionism tendencies kill me. I get up the nerve to post something, then I know it’s not as good as I could have done, feel bad, and pause again. Which is ultimately kind of silly, I just want to make videos to scratch a creative itch for myself anyway! LOL
What a great pep talk!!! Thank you. For me, the biggest roadblock is picking some thing and just going with it. I do get tangled up and concerns about whether or not I am sabotaging my actual work as an executive coach. While I do believe that I have so much to say most of my life and most of my wisdom comes in so many directions. I see so much expectation to be laser focused on one topic or One Direction or one niche here. And sometimes my life is a little bit of this a little bit of that. Even my coaching strategies in my own leadership revolves more than once specific thing. I’m gonna keep watching and see. Maybe I can learn from your wisdom. But thank you so much for this amazing conversation. It’s a great kick in the butt .
Listen to her! I purchased all of this stuff and have only used my phone and CapCut 😒😂. Just start! I’m a new sub and new to the content creation world 😊
Love this video,Jen! My second video got nearly 1000 views! I only expected a few and I was ok with it but now I’m anxious because I had that many eyes on me! The human mind is fascinating 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah it gets exhausting. I often don't post something because I don't have my makeup on it the sound isn't great but recently I just started posting anyway, because really, nobody cares about my markup but me.
Thanks so much for letting me know 🫶🏽. It’s really a challenge at first - then we remember each “little” view is one whole human who cared about what we had to share.
Hey Jen! You have definitely motivated me into going for it despite my desire to have everything set up perfectly. If you don't mind, I will be mentioning you in my debut video, which is scheduled to go up next week Sunday the 17th. By the way, where have you been? Hope you're feeling better.
Agree you don't need a lot of specialist equipment... my biggest struggle is getting the words out so I repeat until I think it sounds good enough... I think it's an autistic thing? I also have ADHD so the rest of the RUclips experience is ticking ALL the boxes! It definitely is getting easier.
Alexia is awesome. Yeah, my excuse was. I don't have equipment. I don't have it camera. I'm holding a phone. I don't have audio. I have a Bluetooth headset. I don't have a tripod. I can sit in my car and prop my arm up or prop my phone on some books. I don't have ideas. What would I've Vlog, about everyday life? I don't know how to edit how too videos. I don't know how to film well you just do it. You can learn like everyone else. like the saying goes, just do it
@@jennavarx you're really doing an amazing showing up and being vulnerable. I like that you gave yourself permission to fail this week 'cause you were sick this week. Hilarious, eh? We often best ourselves up for our own goals. No one else is judging.
I having trouble understanding if I should be filming horizontal or vertical? Iam starting a new business now I'm 42 but I am def not tech savvy at all lol. I agree on the gear. The one take thing is a bit of a different prospect though as just going for a one take can often result on a lot of meandering around, pauses and unclear discussion of the topic. All for it but not everyone can just real it off naturally, without notes, multiple takes and editing. Called out on Nirvana songs, funny .
My biggest issue is editing. Ive been wanting to start a channel for years and have made several videos but i hate editing. Out of all the videos i made i only finished editing one and it burned me out and turned me off from wanting to do more. It was literally like having another full time job. Also repeatedly seeing and hearing myself made me more self conscious than i already am lol. With that said, do you have any suggestions on how to overcome editing barriers for newbies?
I have no idea how to edit so just until I get comfortable I’m doing what she does here ie a one shot straight through. At least that way you have some continent and can start to edit really slowly little bits rather than a whole video. That’s my plan anyway, good luck to you.
@@Shelby-s2w Yep, me sitting in a chair, bad lighting, not great sound, not sure what I’m gonna say but posting it anyway. I’m doing this for me for now and I’m sure I’ll learn as I go.

You just have to try and ignore them. The best strategy I found was; is your time on RUclips improving you as a person ? That was my key weapon.
