Dang! You didnt even finish the sentence about the touching headlight wires and I said "Oh shit!" That's it. The hood to my mower broke and I had to disconnect the headlights. Didnt realize the wires were touching and caused this. You are my hero, dude.

You showed me where the #)$;! Fuse was ! My mower worked last Saturday, then went back out to it and it wouldn’t do a thing - wouldn’t click, even the hour meter wasn’t showing up so I knew it was something electrical . The stupid manual just says the fuse is located “behind the dash”. Yeah, no it isn’t. It was right in the same place as yours- mines a different model but there it was and it was clearly bad. Put in a new one and the old boy fired right up! Not bad for an old lady! Thank you SO much for such a clear concise video- I’m so happy I could cry! And the grass shall fear me….

I changed the ignition switch. I changed the starter solenoid. Then I found your video and found the blown fuse. Thanks for the help!

Excellent video….My L120 was blowing fuses…I found the headlight harness had been routed around the hood spring…Caused the connector to rub through on the frame, the wire terminal inside was touching…since I don’t mow at night, I disconnected it, taped it up, and zip tied the harness out of harms way…You probably saved me at least an hour of digging through wiring!

Swapped 26 HP engine into troybilt mower and left lights unplugged. One day it would not start and I checked the solenoid and blew five fuses. Turns out, the light wires got pinched in the hood hinge and made a short everytime the hood closed. Thanks for this video
GREAT video ! Just got a brand new John Deere E130 off the truck . Started no problem 1 day later blown fuse 5x Lowes coming to pick it up in 3 days but at least I know what to look for thanks to this video 👍

Since I don't know a single person who has ever used their tractor lights I just disconnected my light wires and taped them up and tied them off to the side in there.....
Thank you so much for this video, this is exactly what happened to my X140. The 2 headlight wires came out of the housing and the contacts must have touched together and blew the fuse. Thankfully the wires are ok so I just needed to change the fuse only.

Awesome video, I have a John Deere D140 that’s blowing fuses. It only blows them when the service reminder is plugged in. I bought a new one and it’s still blowing them, I traced the wiring but haven’t found any wire that’s grounded out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm troubleshooting a Craftsman riding mower where the 20 amp fuse at the solenoid blows as soon as I turn the key. The ignition switch has off/lights/run/start, so if it blows when I first turn to the headlights, would the short have to be in that area? I tested the solenoid and ignition switch, and the wiring for the headlights to the plug looks good where you had to repair in the video.
Try and unplug the lights then see if it blows the fuse. If it does then you have Marriott down to the lights. Most likely the positive wire found ground somewhere in the light wiring

my riding mower keeps blowing the fuse even with the switch off any idea
I'm blowing fuses and I do not want to have to go threw that bird's nest of wires in there all day long! I have put almost all new parts on this tractor (D140). Selenoid, battery, PTO switch, Key switch, Coils, plugs, gas filter, air filter, gas pump and a new PTO clutch. As well as eliminating all safety switch's. Oh yeah it has all new spindles on the deck! Last fall the blades stopped while mowing. At first I could get them on again but they would stop working after a few minutes and then it got to where I could not get them working and even had trouble starting the tractor. So I just put it away for winter and now I got this mess in the spring. I got it running with some of those new parts and battery.....but then after mowing three yards on my street I could not get it started after it sat for a while. And I found I was blowing fuses!
Did you determine on where the higher voltage came from I didn’t think that the stater on the engine was able to actually put out that higher voltage.
It’s not about the output. It’s about positive going to ground and melting/blowing the fuse.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngineswhy do starter motors on riding mowers have continuity on the positive post to any ground on the frame but is still running normal and not blowing fuses?

Just unplug the harness from the lights. There should be a plug that connects the two.

So, i've changed out my battery to a brand new one, because the posts were bad and the bolts holding the positive & negative wires to it were not tight, they were real loose. On top of that the battery ended up being bad. I was assuming that is what was making my fuse pop every time I tried to start it. So I placed a new battery on it a few hours ago and still, the fuse popped. I had already checked the wiring throughout the entire mower and they show good. There is no touching wires or exposed wiring and etc. What else could it be? Maybe the ignition switch? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try disconnecting your lights, ignition switch, wiring to your engine and electric PTO. Then put a new fuse in. If the fuse doesn’t blow, then start plugging in each plug until it blows. When it blows you most likely just found the issue.

I have a John Deere 140 riding mower. That 20 amp fuse has melted. I don't see worn wires yet. Where should I look?
Impossible to answer that question without seeing the machine. If the fuse blew? Check the fuse holder for corrosion and if it is ok. I would suggest pulling all electrical plugs that run currant through them, ignition switch harness to engine etc, then put a new fuse in and one at a time start to plug in your electrical connections, when the fuse blows your normally will have found the issue. Electrical issues are almost impossible to diagnose with seeing the machine.
Hello- very informative video! I have almost the same problem with my Ariens mower, same exact spot where the wires rubbed together. Except with mine the connector plug close by has melted. Ace Hardware says I need to buy two entire harness kits which will run me about 200 bucks. Can't I simply replace the connector plug? Anybody have a thought on this?
Yes you can just replace the connector plug but you may need to get one from a parts machine. A similar tractor that is junked that you can get parts from.

It can be very difficult to find a electrical issue. That being said, What I normally will do is disconnect most all wiring plugs I can see. Then install a new fuse, I will assume you have a electric switch to turn on the blades? Then while sitting on the machine with the key in the on position, (tractor not running) pull the switch on, if the fuse does not blow, then one plug at a time, start plugging them in until the fuse blows and there you may find your issue. Obviously do not disconnect your ignition switch. I would start with the PTO Clutch plug(it is a electric clutch that turns your mower deck on, it is connected to the bottom of your engine) disconnect it then see if the fuse blows, if it does not, most likely you have a wiring issue with the PTO clutch or a bad clutch. I cannot help more than this without seeing the machine.
Liquid electric tape is a quick fix for the head light wires just so long as the wire was still good
With the headlight wires you can just cut them and tape them up or just disconnect them right? Since I've never met or heard about anyone who actually uses them lights. LOL
Dirty or corroded contacts in the fuse holder can cause the fuse to 'physically' overheat and blow. This is not the same as too much electricity flowing through the fuse and blowing it. Dirty, corroded (high resistance) contacts can act like a load resistance and 'physically' get so hot that thel heat actually melts the fuse wire. I've had it happen before.

I had the same problem w the head lights, but is that why the mower isn’t starting?
After disconnecting the the lights and replacing the fuse, the engine should spin again when trying to start the machine. If the engine is spinning when you have the key in the crank position and the tractor will still not start? then you have another issue.
I have a 2013 Husqvarna YTH24K48 with a 24h.p. Kholer Courage V-Twin, it has a New Battery, the mower starts fine but when I increase the R.P.M. it blows the fuse (20amp), I bypassed the fuse for a quick check, it cranked fine and when I increased the rpm it started surging, I shut it off replaced the fuse and it cranks fine as before, do you have any suggestions as to what could be causing this issue?
Sometimes electrical issues are a little tougher to find. First start by checking your voltage coming out of the battery at full speed without the PTO on. If it’s above 14 V like 16 1718 then you may have a bad voltage regulator or alternator. Then I would start to check the voltage regulator and alternator by disconnecting each one and see what you get when you turn a PTO on and throttle up. You could possibly have a bad PTO but that’s very rare that your issue comes from that. It sounds like you may have a charging system that’s running away from you which means it’s throwing too many votes at you. So it is very important that your battery is in good condition. @@JohnsonsSmallEngines WOW that was a quick reply, my battery is new and has a full charge, I traced all the wires I could see and found nothing, I removed the voltage regulator it seemed to check out fine I did clean the 3 connection prongs, I reinstalled everything and now it seems to be fine, it is charging at 14.2 volts at high rpm, so could dirty connections on the voltage regulator have caused the issue? I took it out and mowed for about 10 minutes and No Problem, kinda weird, anyway thank you so much I'm sure I'll have other problems, and check here first.
@@busterallen9159 Yes, sometimes a bad connection could do it. Yours is a rare one that only happens when you throttle up. 14.2 is perfect on the charging system. Glad it seems better. I have a husqvarna zero turn that's blowing fuses. It will run for about 5 mins and then pop the fuse and shut off.. I am reading 12v to the fuse holder when the key is on or off ...any idea what the problem might be
Electrical issues are hard to diagnose with seeing the machine. I don’t know anything about your machine other than it’s a O turn. Something sounds like it is drawing to much current, like a positive wire just starting to ground out (slice in a wire). Make sure the battery is in good condition and check to make sure it is not charging over 14.5 volts. If it is you may have a alternator going bad or a regulator. I sometimes will start to unplug switches after you start it to see if there is a switch going bad inside. If the machine stays running and fuse doesn’t blow. You just found the issue. Only pull one switch at a time. Worse case, you would need to trace wires for continuity with the battery disconnected. Most of the time I can figure it out before that is the case. Also I have had to replace the entire fuse holder due to corrosion inside. Look inside the fuse holder for any corrosion.
When checking voltage at the battery it would be when the engine is running at full speed. If the engine has a voltage regulator it should not go over 14.5volts and it should be charging over 12.5

This video will only help if it is a bad fuse holder. Most of the time when fuses start to blow it is due to a positive wire going to ground. I cannot diagnose your issue without seeing the machine. It could be anything in the electric system causing the issue from a bad ignition switch to a mouse chewed wire to a bad head lamp connector near the muffler that melted.

My headlight wire wasn't tied down and engine heat melted insulation. I said wtf uses head lites lol and cut the wire at different lengths and heat shrunk ea. End pinching the end.
