If the company is make or break on a single job needing a trench box, you should find another job. We got work booked solid for the next two and a half years minimum.
Helped rescue guys extract a young guy trapped by his legs in a 2 foot deep trench ….the trench was only just above his knees and the concrete slab rolled into trench trapping him and was lucky to save his legs . . Point is the trench doesn’t need to be mega deep to kill / injure. Was a big wake up call to me .
Remember your boss pays you not to be able to afford to live in his neighborhood so don't put your life in his hands when he short cuts safety on the job.
I do this kind of work and while the company is somewhat responsible for not complying with safety standards, you still have a responsibility to yourself and your family to protect yourself. He should not have went back in that trench.
Shady contractors just care about making money as quickly as possible. They will knowingly conduct illegal work until they get caught. And don't be surprised if they shut down the business and start another business under a relatives name and different company name. The contractors own words will be used against him to send him to prison.
Remember you young guys, you can STOP the job. If you see anything that's not safe, stop the job. If that don't work, call OSHA. A contractor does not want OSHA on the job site. OSHA will not go on the site unless they are called, but if they are called they can inspect the entire job site.
Yet remember those who came before you who fought for the rights you have to be treated like a human being and not an animal. You owe us and your children to fight to keep the rights we win for you.
The report says they didn't have any trench box but yet they show a photo with one. 8 feet deep trench without trench box borders on criminal. I dug a 3 feet utility trench and I didn't feel safe working in it.
enter go back and check the quality of the houses these scum have built . if they cut corners in trench safety , they probably do it during the construction phase
If you have ever done any dirt work you know how heavy that dirt is. For the uninitiated a single cubic yard of dirt is a couple thousand pounds, damp dirt will be more. A trench collapse is usually going to be several yards of dirt falling. If the company won’t use a trench box, don’t get in the ditch.
I've heard from construction workers themselves that that's very common here in the USA. The uncommon thing is that the victims this time were NOT hispanic.
I build tower cranes in Miami. My crews crane fell out the foundation in Delray. Different company had a tower section break off the crane durning a climb catapults 1 man 45 stories. Water balloon effect when he hit the concrete. Rumors had it they're trying to say it was a freak accident but lack of safety since he wasn't tied off is the thing
Mexicans know how to haul A. And I've SEEN them do stuff like this! More than once! On their own. Nobody told them to do it or forced them. Roofers are the worst. I've seen them run up a peaked roof with no line on. I've seen them go from a 2.5 floor landing to top of 2 story peaked roof--NO safety! They think it makes them less manly, or something. I've known Poles to do stuff like that, too.
What ive learned it's usually small business owners who cut corners to save money... Anywhere they can save a dollar they will, even if it means someone could get killed....
All it takes is a 4ft deep trench to collapse on you crush you your dead 8ft deep tell me you've never done dirt work with out telling me. 8ft deep needs to be benched 2 or three times so 16 to 24 ft bench to be safe depending on type of material being dug mr know it all
So many people disregard safety, they put COST and TIME above safety of people.....once as a young man I jacked up the front of my car in my garage,,,I removed a tire,,( no jack stands because they were in the back yard storage and I was to lazy to go get them,). I jacked up the car, took the tire off,,,stood up to get my tools,,,in that instant, my jack failed,,car crashed to the ground landing on. The caliper....the old jack just ,,failed,,gave out,,,,I was just about to get on my back and get under the car....no one was home...I could have EASILY DIED........point is,,,SAFETY FIRST.....if your employer doesnt see things that way, that clearly means YOUR SAFETY IS SECOND TO HIS WANTS..,,,and to say it crudely, your employer doesnt give a fcuk if you get hurt ...
Let's follow your logic, guy number one walks off the job as the trench collapsed twice on him, then workers hires guy number three who it collapses on.
@@kennethsouthard6042worker number #1 calls OSHA and make a “life threatening hazard” complaint, jobsite is shut down & business owner is in DEEP SHIT. Problem solved. I hope that young man rests peacefully.
FOR ALL YOU YOUNG BUCKS: If your boss ever says some shit like “we play the odds” fucking run.
I thought that was a callous thing to say when it doesn’t include his personal life.
I hope they use that against him in court.
And call every authority you can to investigate. No playing when it comes to people lives.
As a safety, you have zero excuses not to have used a trench box, that's why I keep two logbooks, one for you, and one for the court.
But it would have cost too much money and cut into profits!

Too many business owners could care less about the safety of their employees, including corporations.

You can sue them for safety violations
Doesn't help dead people
Then the boss would tell him to find another job.....that's how this type of employers are....

8x8 trench is pretty damn wide and can be kept safe
