I work in a trench all day and even though you have your trench boxes something can always go wrong. When you have a good team and look out for each other and the benching and shoring and slopes everyone on the crew makes sure it’s safe. At the end of the day we all leave together as a crew like when we show up for work.
This is a slide rail system. The worker is trapped on the outside of the slide rail "Shoring". Worker should never stand on the side the operator is digging on. There is no excuse for a worker to be trapped on the outside of shoring. Slide rail is a 'Positive pressure" Shoring system. The operator or signaler got over anxious and ahead of him self which left a void under the panel they were advancing. This allowed for all the soil behind the panel to fall through along with the worker. Basically they created a sink hole. Operator and top hand are responsible for this.
50 guys and hours to get him out. When the trench collapsed one day where I was working I dug two guys out that were buried up to their necks in about 45 minutes by myself. And I don’t go around claiming to be a hero everyday
