    You Sir are the best. My bike said I was not going to start anymore at all. You can mash the start button all you want but I won't do it. Now thanks to you easy and very quick starts. Again thank you!

      Hey bud, was it cranking? My 96 1400 is having trouble even with starter fluid. I think i may try this. Just want to make sure its not another issue.

  • @battler544
    @battler544 6 лет назад +15

    The part that you bypassed is the decompression control unit. you spliced the exciter wire for both the decompression solenoid, and the starter solenoid, since the same wire (green and yellow) excites both. The problem with this is that the decompression system wont work now. Over time this will ruin the starter motor bendix gear, which will be an expensive repair. I recommend reconnecting the green and yellow wire, but splice the green and yellow wire with the black and yellow wire as well, this should excite the timer for the decomp system. Make sure both cables are slack at state of rest. If the bike persists in backfiring and popping lift the tank, get someone to hold it, start the bike, and spray starter fluid directly onto the intake rubbers if the engine revs pick up, you have a cracked rubber. Over time these fuel pumps pump at reduced pressure due to wear, and they normally give fair warning before they go, get a mechanic to check this, but first replace plugs. These carbs have stainless components, and 'carbing up" is not an issue with them, as with brass carbs. They are difficult to remove, so try to avoid it. Check the tank siv before making this call

      the PROBLEM was I was ONLY getting 9v to the Solenoid from that box under the seat = there was 13.7v going into it when I hit the starter switch / 9v to the starter motor was causing it to Drag drawing more amperage and even burnt off the Pos+ cable connecting to the starter - by BYPASSING that box under the seat I was getting 13.7v to the SOl & Starter!!! Problem SOLVED

      You will have to buy the part, as doing what I suggested also is not advisable, as the decompression solenoid will keep the exhaust valves open, as long as you are pressing the starter button. By having no decompression system you risk damaging your starter gear mesh. Some of these gears are inside the engine, and would require an engine split. The decompression system should be checked at every oil change to make sure it's working. If it's still popping, and backfiring, bypass the fuel pump relay, as these will work intermittently before finally packing up. Mine went at 70000 km, and I could feel intermittent surging for about 12000 km before the backfiring, and popping got really bad the one day, as well as the surging, and that is when the bike just stopped running, and would not start due to the relay. They also wanted a hell of a price for it, so I bypassed it, unfortunately you can't do that with the decompression control unit.

      I agree, but after a while I started to listen to the lyrics, then it became much more entertaining and amusing. I've watched this viddy off and on for years. I ended up tossing the entire OEM ignition system for Dynatek parts.

      Ralph Pelkey
      The only reason your bike would be backfiring while shifting gears is because of a lean or Rich issue. These wires would have no effect on that.

    Baccus, I have been researching this a lot over the past couple of days and all the parts lists that I have looked at are indicating that the part that you bypassed is actually the decompression control unit, not the ignition starter control. Your thoughts are appreciated.

      A couple months after doing this bypass "OF THE DECOMPRESS" unit, it fried the starter, fried the fuel pump, shorted the igniter and burnt out the start relay. Also caused heavy cylinder wear. You can do this in a pinch just to get off the road but long term destroys the bike!!!

    Hey brother... During your troubleshoting... Did you learn more about the Compression Release Control Unit??? I have wrenched on a load of bikes and I can not stand to work on the vs1400 (uggg)... Don't know why, I just don't like it. Too much stuff to take off I guess. Anyway... Mine has a smoke issue out of the rear jugg during iddle and rough starting. Pilot screw on rear jug has almost no effect.. I have cleaned, re-cleaned and cleaned carbs again. I am thinking it may be a compress release issue if I can learn more about what the does. Please share your knowledge if you can. thanks!

    My 04 vs 1400 intruder started popping and backfiring about 7-8 mos ago and has now gotten so bad it's constant (on the rear cyl). The bike sounds like it's running waay lean on the back cylinder but after reading this I'm not so sure it's a fuel problem. I can't ride it like this and I need some sound advice before I begin taking the rear carb off (since that looks like a pretty big job to do unless you're certain that's your problem).
    I should also add that I'm 62 yrs old and have severe spinal problems so it's extra tough to get to all of the places you need to remove the carb.
    Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    what is the function of a starter module?

  • @wcowin1
    @wcowin1 10 лет назад +1

    Lord Baccus, I have been having a very similar problem with my Intruder. It is a 1996 1400. In addition to turning over slow, if I manage to actually get it started, once I turn it off, many times it will not restart and I get a clicking sound when pressing the start button, or it will attempt to turn over slowly and then the clicking sound. Also, the last time I had it out on the road, it bogged down (lost power as I accelerated), and died. I got the clicking sound when I tried to restart it. After several minutes on the side of the road, It started back up and I was able to get home with it. Could all of this be symptoms of the same problem?

    Thank you so much for this video. Helped me find the problem.
    Laurence Nortje comments where correct in that this is the decomp control unit and as a result of bypassing
    it can lessen the life of the starter motor. however that is not an expensive repair as he stated. starter motors
    cost 40 bucks. The decomp control unit costs 100 bucks which should be replaced.

      Disconnect battery and place it at the side of your bike. Using startercables as links: Connect the negative pool from the battery to some exposed metal on your bike. Connect the positive from the top (positive pool) of your starter motor and gently tap the other end of the cable to the positive pool of the battery. If done correctly and nothing happens you have isolated that the problem is the startermotor

    Anyway, it sounds just very similar to this both when fires right up, and when slow starting.
    👍👍🍆 2 thumbs and a giant boner up, if this gets it. For now 🤞

      The decompression control unit has two timers built into it. The first timer activates the decompression system, and then the second timer activates the starter solenoid. If you remember the old DR 500 Suzuki, it had a lever which you pulled first then kicked it, making it easy to kick over. Ive actually seen kick start shafts snapped because of no decompression, and it will definitely cause wear on the casing, and the seal to leak. My repair is not advisable as a long term solution, but as a "get by" until you can afford the decompression unit.
