    I gave up flying back in the late 90s ….As a private pilot I’ve had nothing but pleasant conversations with atc, one comes to mind about 25 years ago I was flying my 1979 piper archer from Atlantic City baider field gps direct to Mansfield Ma which put me about 3 miles out over the water , I was getting flight following from NYC and to be honest , didn’t expect to hear from them seeing how busy they are , but out of the blue they called my tail number and after I answered and the controller asked me if I was a good swimmer , I was kind of taken back and asked “ what do you mean “ and he came back with “ your three miles off the shore line with only one engine “.. we both got a chuckle. Another time I was flying from Mansfield to Nantucket at 3000 feet which put me right over the top of Otis Air Force base , l was monotoring Otis tower on my 2nd radio and just before providence approach told me I was getting out of their area and to notify cape approach I heard the tower tell the F-16 to taxi into position and hold , just then I was told to notify cape approach and I did so immediately , and after checking in , informed them of my altitude and position and asked if the f-16 that was departing Otis was going to be a factor ( as I was about 30 seconds from overflying the top of the field and concerned that some hot steel was about to rip through my floorboards ) … the controller came back and said “ I assure you that you have no worries with the F-16 that just departed Otis as it is currently over Maine “

    • @mattperry5789
      @mattperry5789 2 месяца назад +3

      @@peeonu25 I have a commercial pilot’s license. Those written tests are a formality. I agree it’s mainly rote memorization to pass those, but that’s the tip of the iceberg.
      You need to have a wealth of knowledge to pass the oral portion of each check ride with an FAA examiner. Also need to be proficient in the required maneuvers, emergency procedures and various navigation systems of your airplane.
      On top of getting your ratings you need a minimum of 1500 hours of flight time to get a job as an airline pilot where you will be trained and required to pass your Airline Transport check ride and type rating in your jet.
      Pilots at this level are professionals and experts at their craft.

    As a flight instructor, I can say there is no geographic or "abeam the numbers" definition for a short approach in 14 CFR regulations. A short approach is loosely defined as a normal VFR approach that is shortened from a normal length downwind/base/final approach. In ATC terms, short approach simply means, "please shorten your approach" usually for traffic spacing or similar separation requirement.
