Trying to fit into "the norm" is often what causes kids and teens immense stress and anxiety. Our "traditional" upbringings are also very disconnected from nature. I commend you for being so adventurous - your kids are going to be extremely successful, that's obvious!

@@EverybodyLovesSarah why feel bad? Being a kid is great most kids are happier. Kids have less stress. They have more time to do things. They have more friends. They are more care free. What made highschool so amazing for me was the fact that I did “make my own choices and did whatever I want”. I get it, I know a lot of people hated highschool. As my mother would say, "Never allow School to ruin your education". By the age of 15 I had traveled around the world learning what life in this world was like for so many people in all the countries I got to visit and live in. I am now 71 and have never regretted the incredible education I was so fortunate to have received. Just to help with the math I was born in 1951 in London England where after the age of 4 my travels began. I moved to the US at the age of 21 and have continued with a life of exploration. Like those kids, I grew up on a sailboat, from 8 to 17 years old. I can safely say that it was one of the most defining and important experience of my life. I'm now almost 40 and low and behold, work as a marine biologist, and have spent a good chunk of my adult life working onboard research vessels, sailing to the Arctic and Antarctic and continuing the fantastic journey my parents had started. I think that, for me, the hardest thing is 1) to know that I will never offer such a childhood to my own children, and 2) to see my parents sell our beloved sailboat.

Good for you for bucking the "norm." Your kids are getting experiences that are letting them understand the whole world so much better. The experiences they are getting, in the long run especially, will be more beneficial. Yes, there are things the kids will miss out on, but I would say the "normal kids" are getting way less education.

This was one of my favorite episodes ever. Everyone seemed so relaxed, and it was SO GREAT to see Kate at the helm, and "the kids" (not Keith) left in charge of making crucial turns while the parents slept. If you want your kids to become leaders, you need to trust them, give them increasingly more opportunities where you truly let go and step away. It gives them chances to learn through mistakes, and become empowered and satisfied with life.

Often they have said they are so thankful for their education, and the few real friends they still have from their school days. Social experiences are not something to build your life around. Most, if not ALL the people one meets before they turn 25 will disappear by the time they turn 33. Facebook friends don't count. The 30 ramdom people a young person is forced to spend the day with is a stupid way to choose one's future. Great video Renee, It was especially amusing when Jack said he was saddened by not having the opportunity to drive a car. Hmm, Jack.... you can drive a large sailboat that's bigger than a semi truck and expertly follow the coordinates to a location on the ocean! Ask yourself if the kids on land can do that. Kate can do that at 15 years of age and have her family go to bed because they trust her skills. You are the lucky ones with no bad teachers and no heckling , no physical assaults or other things like that just parents and siblings that love and respect you. Cheers from Canada.

Agreed 🙂 That was one of the things we thought when we emigrated to the Amazon area with our three young children (14/11/9 y.o.) and lived at the edge of the jungle without electricity or running water. Or a toilet or shower, haha! It's very good for your children to live "outside the box" and re-define, or rather un-define what is seen as "normal". And to taste other cultures, learning to understand that our Western societies are not the norm, not the ultimate happyness.

Oh please...your children can proudly and accurately call themselves citizens of the world. They understand the world more than the majority of adults, let alone children... they have accomplished more in their formative years than most will do in their entire lifetimes, and they're more prepared for the world than most. I can bet that if their further educational pursuits involve college, their essays alone will put them at the top of the A list of student candidates. They'll look back and realize they haven't missed out on a normal childhood, but they've escaped an unremarkable one. I can't image how proud you two must be.

Your kids are getting a "real" LIFE education that not many people get to experience. The family bonding that you're all experiencing is Priceless. Enjoy it while it lasts!😁👍 As long as you can home school, you're golden. Teachers spend only an hour or so each day with a whole "class." The one-on-one individual attention hours that you spend each day are generally more productive. Let's face it, most of daily life is ground-hog day, with much over-rated routine. Get up, go to school/work, go home, eat, watch some TV, then repeat. We walk and drive down the same streets, eat at the same restaurants, visit the same stores and parks, wait at the same stop lights each day, etc. It's NOT what life should be about! Life should be about making memories with your family, not sitting in the same office cubicle every year, waiting for a retirement day that may or may not come, with health that may or may not hold out until retirement. You guys are all very fortunate to be in your situation, living the different experiences you encounter every day and night. Your kids are learning responsibility and the sailing skills that will carry them through their lives. 😎 And thank you guys for giving us the vicarious life escapes with each episode.🏝️⛵🌞

Traveling is the best education a person can have. It gives you a perspective on everything you encounter thereafter. As a kid we lived abroad of the US - and when we came back - I was light years ahead of other kids who had never been to London, Frankfurt, Rome, or even Istanbul. History came easy to me as I understood the big picture and embraced how and why things are around the world.

They are broader humans for having experienced this life and that is very valuable.

I think Anna's comments are the most telling. It is very hard if not impossible to get a university education on line. This is because a large part of going to uni is meeting other people and working on the subjects you're interested in, in a very focussed way. It is very hard to get that kind of education in later life. So while it might not matter much if you're 18 and under, after this age you really have to decide whether you want to go to university, like Anna did. I think her choice is admirable.

And I disagree entirely. My mom went to college at 53 and succeeded brilliantly. I did trade school in my mid-late 20’s and make over 110k a year. Her comments seemed shallow to me and only involved very temporal immediate things, there were no lessons learned worth mentioning in all the “travelling”.

What’s great about Anna is that she knew what she wanted, and it is great she was supported. However, distance education has been a thing for decades already. The pandemic especially showed that sooooo many courses can be done online. Hundreds of universities all over the world offer proper college courses without requiring physical presence. Some people prefer that and thrive doing that.

It was great hearing from "the kids" about how they see their lives onboard vs what might have been ashore. And we all know how Keith feels about being "aground" again. But what about you Renee? How was your transition to boat life when you all first started out? Do you think you missed out on PTA meetings, mall shopping, running the kids everywhere for their school ad sports events, talking to neighbors over the fence? Just being curious here.
I really love seeing how Kate and all your kids take the underway watches with such understanding and being very confident in their own abilities in handling such a large yacht, at night, alone. Remember Anna having a real flare for being underway. Even if jer heart wasn't always into it. Yet she was a master at boat handling!

Learning your social cues and maerisims from primarily one group of people could be hard later in life if you're not used to being around other people that arent your family. But you all have done a great job of getting on land and meeting locals and showing your kids other cultures.

They also learned time management by homeschooling BUT they also didn’t have to deal with big peer pressure ie clothing, alcohol, drugs and stupid behaviour ❤️ Mine are now in thier 30 but I raised with work ethic, manners and think for themselves as there are consequences for every action. I like you are thankful for when mine were growing up they had many freedoms that isn’t today’s world. My kids were in many competitive sports because my father said “ pay it now or pay the lawyer later” . I grew up in a family of 13 I never thought I was poor but everyone else looked forward to summer break, I spent it weeding our huge gardens so we had food all year. Yes I was raised to work hard and was taught to problem solve I absolutely wouldn’t trade it and I hope like you that my children appreciate it, it had served them well so far😍 So yup your children have been given many life skills that thier so called normal peers haven’t .
