Those are all very good points. I'm currently and Air Force Recruiter in the DFW area. Many of my applicants struggle with arithmetic reasoning as they're studying for the ASVAB. I will start showing them this video in the hopes they understand that they can definitely learn. It's all a matter of will and motivation. Also saw that you're an Army Veteran. Thank you for your service, Sir.
for the last point, I used to hate math. I just never saw myself as a math person, and thought that it wouldn't be necessary for the education path i was taking. However, after a series of events, I'd realized the value that studying math to at least a calc 2-3 level would have. Around that time, I had unlearned the notion that i was limited to only learn certain subjects because I didn't have the predisposition to learn anything else, so given a reason and the confidence, i got to work. i taught myself up to a pre calc level, taught myself some calc 1, took a calc 1 class and did really well, and now I'm studying calc 2 on my own. I do it on my free time and it's helped a lot. I feel like a big reason why people hate math is because they don't see what's in it for them and don't believe they can do it anyways. Toughing it out is one thing, but connecting competency in math to something they value or enjoy is a lot more sustainable imo. Great video though! I agree with everything, and I'm glad you touched on how poor grade school math education is. I barely remember anything from the classes, but i just remember being told so many things to memorize out of context, without explaining why the rules exist or any explanation that would explain it intuitively.
This is exactly how I felt! It's why I pushed myself to get better at math in my 20s so that I could eventually go back to school in my 30s and get a degree in physics. That self driven interest is what you need to excel at anything!
That understanding can go a long way with helping her to understand it as well. Once you see that a lot of it comes down to the way it's taught in schools today, so much of student's difficulty starts to make sense.
@@EdLatimore1 As a math teacher, have you ever considered how we could be doing things differently if we incorporated computers into math classes early on? Let Python handle the heavy lifting of computation, let Tableau / Microsoft Power BI handle statistical visualizations, etc, so that we take away the terrifying & taxing grunt-work of computation out of math class and focus on the logic. Ever considered the idea?

Hey much appreciated! Everyone can improve at math, I truly believe that!

As one of those people who was great at math in school, this video helped me understand why my daughter is struggling with math.
That understanding can go a long way with helping her to understand it as well. Once you see that a lot of it comes down to the way it's taught in schools today, so much of student's difficulty starts to make sense.
Excellent video Ed! Keep it up!
I'm here to stay!
I’m grateful for your channel
Hey thank you! I appreciate it. It's the appreciation that keep me going haha.
Thank you, that's a really grounded and well-informed summary.
Thank you for getting something out it!
Deep respect. You've distilled the difficulties down BRILLIANTLY.
Thank you! I try!
