There's actually a big reason why Ray in the cartoon is only known as Ray AND why he looks so different. Originally the episode was going to have Ray Fillet, but Ryan Brown, the owner of Ray Fillet, whom was very attached to the character, didn't like the script of Rebel without a Fin (particularly Ray being a villain) and didn't allow the cartoon to use Ray Fillet. Thus Ray Fillet was redesigned for the cartoon and lost the "Fillet" part of his name. Its interesting to note that in Rebel without a fin, Ray was unusually reluctant for an evil minion in the 1987 cartoon, some speculate this was a failed attempt at compromise by taking the edge off of Ray's villainy? It would've been nice to see the regular Ray design in the cartoon, I think. Your thoughts. Also Triceraton and Ray appeared in the Sega Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters, whilst Wingnut appeared in the SNES version.
That's really interesting, and makes a lot more sense. He was definitely more reluctant and "not into" the evil plan than most villains from it who were often just as evil as evil can be. I never quite got why every single character, hero or villain, in the cartoon had to be introduced as a potential villain first. I understand it makes for a good chance for the turtles to firsthand see how formidable the character is, but I think they overdid it. Shame we never got the real Ray Filet, but good on his creator for protecting his character.
I didn’t know all that about panda khan. He was my favorite toy. Was givin to me in my elementary school. That same day when I got home his leg broke so I buried him in my backyard. Great vid man
His huge axe was so unique. He was one of my favorites, too. I actually called him "Panda La", for some reason? as I could not read well when I got him and something was lost in translation from my parents. In my battles, he was always one of the strongest ones and his axe could knock down multiple enemies in a single blow. For an added wrinkle, he could throw the axe like a tomahawk. With most of these figures, I didn't know the backstory/attributes and just made my own.
I had an amazing mom who made sure I had ALL the figures but she would never let us have any slime or playdo of any kind. Cant say i blame her nowadays.
I'm there brother! I'm probably about the same age as you. I was in pre-school in 1988, and my little friend and I would always bring our new figures to play with. Last spring I was in my old hometown for a toy convention, and was going through a table of Turtles figures, when who is also going through the same table but my Turtle bud from preschool! We've kept in touch on social media, always showing our new finds, and this weekend he's throwing a Turtles-themed birthday party for me. @@brendansrambles9464
Yes! This wave was the golden age of that line! It had so many of my all-time favorites: Ray Fillet, Wingnut, Mondo Gecko, Mutagen Man, Muck Man, Triceraton, Pizza Face, and my favorite of the entire line, Slash! I was the other way around--a total sucker for the "evil twin" gimmick! Ever since Venom, it would get me every time. :) The only thing I didn't like about Slash is how Playmates outright lied about how big he was going to be--I remember the back of the card showed him scaled twice as big as the turtles, then when the figure came out he was actually shorter! That would have been the only way to improve on him. When Super7 [finally] gets around to Slash, I'm betting they'll right that wrong!
I agree, I would love a bigger Slash. I noticed most of the figures who were meant to be wide and hulking, big guys often had smaller figures, like Slash, Groundchuck and Leatherhead. I do hope Super 7 pluses them, and their Leatherhead sneak peaks seem like a good indication they will.
I just found my bin of tmnt figures in my mom's storage unit! I was shocked how many accessories were in there. I even have ace ducks egg grenades! I'm gonna start buying the reissues of figures I never had. Just grabbed wingnut, looking for ray filet now. Thanks for the videos. Are you going to do more variant vids
I loved Panda Kahn! There was this older kid on the playground who always talked up PK. Sounded so badass, especially since I could never find him. So he got built up in my mind. Eventually I got him for Christmas.
That was always so fun when a character got so hyped, getting them felt like finding the holy grail. Hothead was really hyped for me, but I never got him as a kid.
I only ever had one TMNT figure; the original Michaelangelo. And my brothers had Leonardo and Donatello. I guess that, to us, they were seen as similar to Masters Of The Universe, in that we only had a few. The '80s had so many new toylines to choose from, we tried a lot of them, but only collected a few. Transformers and G.I.Joe were the big two, but we had a few examples of Sky Commanders, Centurions, Cops 'n' Crooks, Dino Riders, M.A.S.K.. I guess longevity was a factor. Most of those franchises lasted from 1 to 4 years, but Joes and Transformers outlasted my childhood.
I had some Joes, but for me the big two were Turtles and Masters, especially Turtles. Always cool to hear who had what, though, as there were so many to collect, everyone has different stories. I had a point where I was very into Dino Riders too!
@@brendansrambles9464 Turtles and Masters were definitely in the same ballpark. ARAH was a game changer for us. The articulation was something we had never seen.
Love these videos. Got me back into collecting the vintage figures when I swore I was only going to pick up the Super7 Ultimates figs. I blame you mate lol
I love this video man! I am trying to complete the 3-4 waves at least, all complete. It is hard! But I am little by little progressing. Cheers from Spain.
Thank you! Yeah, getting them complete is super rough. I'm still missing plenty of accessories from those waves myself. I wish you luck in finding good deals on them!
Hi Brendan! So amazing resume! I'm starting again to collect from 1988 to 1992 mostly (I was born in 1982) what figure is that in front of Panda Kahn at the minute 18.45? Thank you!
Thanks! That figure is Shogun Shoate. He was from 1994, the last of the new original mutant character figures in the line. He's included in my Wave 6 Turtle Talk video.
Panda Khan was actually a similar case to Usagi, where he was the protagonist of an unrelated comic series. The comics in question actually got published by Mirage. EDIT: I wrote this while watching and submitted it right before you said all this.
yeah, I have a bad bad vision and permit. Is there anyway you could tell us in the videos in the future what weapons come with them to scribe the weapons. Thanks.
Since I was a huge fan of the comics as a kid, I really liked Wingut and Screwloose. Also, Slash was my second favorite. Which is funny, because the Wingut figure was not the one from the comics, but Slash was! I never understood why they did that.
@@brendansrambles9464 agreed I also recommend watching the Episode Ray appeared in if you want some unintentional comedy because he acts so apathetic to everything going on
This is definitely my favorite wave. This is the wave I want to complete first, but I think I will skip Panda Khan, since I also think he is the most boring one from the bunch. I will buy Wyrm instead when I get the chance since I think he fits better with this bunch of weirdos. My personal favorites are Napoleon and Triceraton, but I cannot decide wich one of them I like better, but I usually feel that I like Triceraton a lil better.
Yeah, Wyrm instead of Panda Khan would have been perfect for this wave. Napoleon and Triceraton are both awesome choices, too. Their color schemes are so rad
Never understood cartoon Wingnut, especially since they barely changed his design. The superhero costume made no sense, neither did the alien origin. It would have been so easy to just say he's a mutated bat. Does anybody know the story behind this?
I always thought the same thing. It never made sense. My only guess would be the cartoon writers had their scripts ready, but didn't have an episode with Wingnut and Screwloose, and Playmates told them they had to, so they just reworked some alien invader script they had for the season at the last minute. That's the best I can come up with.
When I was a kid I used to think "when it was a new movie" Total recall was called turtle recall and it was the sequel to The Ninja turtles movie. And I remember asking my dad if we could see it and he just said no like it was a hard no and I didn't understand why Lol
I think slash was in the SNES version of turtles in time, because in the arcade version he was replaced (I think???) with some guy that to me looks like its made out of pizza dough (so maybe its pizzaface????) until I find out who that guy is, im calling him "dough man"
Yes, I am collecting them. They're really cool. I didn't pre-order the earlier waves fully, though, so it's been rough collecting them on the after market.
how possible is it that playmates will realease a retro rotocast pack of some of these figures like they did with the sewer lair and mutant module pack
I'd say it's somewhat likely now, honestly. They have been rereleasing a lot of the vintage toyline recently, like the party wagon and movie turtles (though the Shredder and Splinter in that line were not the originals) and with Super 7 and Neca making characters like Muckman and Wingnut big names in collecting again, they might see a profit in doing so.
The muck man toy always reminded me of the toxic avenger.
There's actually a big reason why Ray in the cartoon is only known as Ray AND why he looks so different.
