  • When my Wife first told me her Audi SQ5 had a rattle in the front suspension I admittingly had a hard time locating the source of the rattle. Some of the front suspension was due for an update anyway so after replacing the front struts, strut mounts, front upper control arms, front thrust bushings, engine mounts... That annoying rattle was still there! It drove me crazy trying to locate this rattle. I hope this helps anyone who might be running into the same problem. Thanks for watching!

Hey Jamie! Have you ever heard of this? On my 06 bmw 325i, the stock pro radio, when I’m listening to music in aux or radio, it randomly changes to CD player. I can’t figure it out. I can change it back or leave it for a moment and it will switch back. And along with that, when I unlock my car, the cd player is doing something, I can hear the noise likes it’s switching disc or something, and the car isn’t even turned over or in accessory mode. Wtf? Lol only solution I can think is just replace the head unit oem or aftermarket. Any suggestions ?

Hi Jamie, excellent video as it has solved my issue with my SQ5. I have exactly the same issue as yours and it also drove my insane trying to find it. Just concerned that if using the same product again by Zimmermann whom make them for Audi I believe will you be replacing them again if the same problem arises? Mine have only been on the car for under a year and they failed! Not to sure if I will go back to the similar product here in Australia, do you know if the issue has been resolved with this rotor ?

What a serious kick in the pants. By far one of the most frustrating things to deal with as a flat rate tech. Love your videos and how you shoot them to show the process/explain stuff. Im an A level Chrysler tech with over 10 years experience. We recently started having to send videos to customers and from the start I’ve spent the time to really show and explain what’s wrong with their vehicle. Customers leave good reviews mentioning my name, I’ve had customers come personally thank me, management has nothing but the best things to say about me, even the owner has recognized me. So thank you for inspiring my video production at work. It’s made selling work for customer safety and upsells so much easier.

This reminds me of a nightmare sound issue I had on a customer car when I worked at Subaru. High-pitched whine sound between 40-60mph, thought it was sus, wheels, bearing, etc. Turned out one of the brake lines had gotten bent up just enough to barley rub on the frame and cause that sound, took 3 days just to figure it out.

Customers think that because you are a technician you should just know what it is. They don't realize your frustration when you can't find the easy quick answer. It's not like a radiator hose that is leaking which is apparent. Great work.

Reminds me of the shaking front-end and steering wheel of my wife’s Murano. For 12 years since almost new her steering wheel would shake when driving between 55-70mph, which covers like 90% of our commute. We spent thousands of dollars on rotations, balancing, alignments, new wheels, new tires, new struts, and much more including all the payments in dead-end diagnostics fees and after 12 years we finally replaced the car because it needed a new catalytic converter that even after market was worth more than the car and the last straw.

    Dude….calling in from Australia here.
I have a 2015 q7 (4M). I bought the car a year and a half ago and have had this bloody annoying rattle in the front left “suspension” since the day I got it. I changed everything under the sun to try and find it. Changed shockers, upper control arms, bushes etc….just like you.
Removed the sway bar…..and even clamped the brake line and drove around without the caliper on to try and find it.
I’ve gone as far as mounting a GoPro under the car to see if I could see anything moving. No joy there either.
Audi themselves had the car for nearly two weeks trying to find the rattle and ended up telling me it must be structural damage due to a previous accident.
I’ve searched youtube and google HUNDREDS, of times trying to find an answer to the most annoying rattle in the history of mankind……..and your video never popper up. Then, for some reason this morning it popped up as a suggested video…..and I have to tell you mate, today you changed my world.!
No more embarrassing rattle, no more annoying speedhump noises. No more curious wondering as I drive along.
And yes….as much as im ecstatic to have found the problem, im super
Embarrassed that I didn’t find it sooner. The fact that it went away when I put my foot on the brake should have been a dead giveaway…..but I just for some reason never suspected the rotor. After all, when the wheel is on its bolted in hard right??….wrong!!!
As soon as I finish this comment, I’m
Off to the shop for a new rotor.
Thanks so much man. So thankful.

Oh yeah dude. There is a TSB on this. The floating brake rotors. A lot of newer German cars are bringing them. Audi/Porsche it's a top complaint.
Sadly, I've seen them rattle right out of the box. The parts department just has them stacked on shelves, which causes unnecessary strain, and can loosen the pins or rivets. Whatever you want to call them.

  • @cs_yt

I never saw this issue, and I lost count how many brakes I've done over decades. My guess these pins are press fit and they did not go all the way in. At our house, it's me who gets annoyed at tiny rattles or malfunctions in my wife's car, things she's never even registered or considers normal car noises. Noises which I then isolate and fix. And then proceed to badger my wife whether she has noticed the absence of the annoying thing I fixed for her. At which point she, almost imperceptibly, rolls her eyes and says 'oh yes honey, it's so much better, thank you. What would I do without my handyman hubby'.

I have a similar issue on my FZR400 motorcycle, when on the brakes and going over a bump it clunks hard, its just the rivets for the floating rotors, its not like your issue though where it happens all the time

Truly annoying as you said Jamie, but the brake disc was not that bad 🤣

That’s crazy not something I would’ve guessed. I’m a tech for John Deere so unless the issue is engine related most of our inspections are done visually because well the engine is loud. Im willing to bet that faulty rotor would’ve passed a visual inspection.

Damn that rotors expensive. A rotor for my gmc 2500 was 77$

Had a loose axle nut that caused a similar noise, the hub rotated faster than rotor somehow i figured it out by rotating axle by hand back and worth and saw that my axle will move before the wheel started to move

Had a customer bring back a new van under warranty with a perculiar noise from inside at all times, even when standing outside the van you could here it! We got it in the shop and found a battery powered "Adult Toy" wedged behind the wheel arch. We left it on the dash when he came to collect his vehicle and explained what we had found. He never ever came back to our garage again ☺️
