    Synopsis
Jodie Foster stars as Clarice Starling, a top FBI training academy student. Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into a case and that Starling, as an attractive young woman, may be just the bait to draw him out.

This is my favorite reaction that you’ve done, Frank! (I say that with all your reactions… Lol) I believe I saw Jodie Foster interviewed once and she said when they were making this movie, she and Anthony Hopkins never saw each other, except when they were actually filming the scenes. That way, all of their interactions with each other would be true and intense. It worked. You always give such a calm and thoughtful summary whenever you stop the recording to speak. The way you do that and the tone of your voice make it wonderful to watch. I loved the laugh when you saw the ending!

That I truly makes a lot of sense. She legitimately seemed scared of him. That just assumed it was really good acting (which of course it was that too)

Even better... dial back and see MANHUNTER (1986) with William Petersen which is the first Hannibal film, and is considerably more powerful than RED DRAGON, done years later. RED DRAGON is a worthy entry, but MANHUNTER replaces weak actors with powerful ones, and the climatic ending has Iron Butterfly's soundtrack pounding the audience for the finale.

    1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real.
    2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released.
    3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film.
    4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice.😈
    5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle😇 played Murdock in "Rambo First Blood II". A great first time/share.
    6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony.
    7. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice.
    8. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.

Hannibal Lecter is a psychiatrist, not a psychologist. He is an MD. When he's talking about coveting and coveting things we see everyday, he's giving her the clue that Buffalo Bill knew at least his first victim. That would give her a place to start. That's what she and her friend figure out.
Also, remember he mentions The Belvedere in their first meeting. The first girl and Buffalo Bill are from a town called Belvidere.
I think he makes the comment to the Senator about her suit because he knows what Buffalo Bill is doing with the skins.

I wonder if Crawford chose Clarice because she is new & fresh, so maybe he didn't want someone who has worked a bunch of cases and bring each experience in their thoughts, so maybe not as clear. Also, i think Hannibal knows how intelligent he is, so to have a seasoned agent on the case Hannibal might not be as willing. But a fresh mind he can work with and manipulate. Of course Hannibal gets intrigued by her & decides to help her. Just a few thoughts.

5:35 -- RE: "Oh! ... because I had assumed they'd be chasing after him, but he's already caught..."; A: Yes, and this film is actually a sequel to an earlier movie called "Manhunter" (1986) which was based on the novel "Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris, released in 1981. "Red Dragon" was eventually rebooted with Anthony Hopkins reprising his role as Lecter; he wasn't in "Manhunter".
Lecter being in custody makes him a kind of McGuffin until the end of "Silence of the Lambs" in the sense that he's known to be very very dangerous but the FBI and indeed the entire System around him has become complacent because they've held him for so long. They can consult with him if necessary, or crack down, and it gives them a false sense of security.

If you see the immediate follow-up film HANNIBAL, it contains another lesson in the history of disembowelment, especially for one certain Italian's family. Also, there's a reminder that some most chic restaurants have the chef appear table-side to cook some of the patrons' meat. By the way, back in his cell after he's stopped the guards, he bends down and picks up a small white pen-knife, with a short blade, perfect for fine cuts around noses, eyes, lips, ear.s "Ready when you are, Sgt. Pembrey"!!!

    • @bitfenix90

Something else... in the very first Hannibal film (1986's MANHUNTER), we are treated to Hannibal displaying his almost infinite skills tricking both people AND 'technology' into giving him home-addresses of anyone Hannibal wants. So he traced Dr. Chilton's vacation destination and he probably had visited his home or villa, probably had it ready and for that dinner with a friend. MANHUNTER is a very powerful film, by the way. Highest recommendations.

Crawford knew that Lechter had Buffalo Bill’s identity. Crawford is based on a real person in the FBI who started the program on psychological profiles on serial killers. There is another show based on him called Criminal Minds. Having an idea of Lechter’s psychological profile, Crawford used Starling like a chess piece. A student going to Lechter was taken as an insult. Lechter had to prove his significance by doing what Crawford couldn’t - divulge the identity of Bill. Some strong evidence that Lechter did know is that Lechter tells the Senator, “Love your suit.” Notice he did not say “I love your suit.”He was not complementing the outfit. Lechter speaks in clues and riddles. “Love your suit” was Lechter telling the Senator her daughter would be turned into a suit.

Sometimes I make an exception for a film that overlaps with horror if its tastefully done and/or is concerned with saying something meaningful about humanity. This film crosses over for me. Funny story about this movie. In my very late 20's, lived a few blocks from the movie house. Bored on a Saturday night, I walked to watch the midnight showing by myself. I didn't get out till almost 2am. When I got out all I could think of was that Lecter was now loose in the streets. So I walked into the taxi stand and asked for a cab. When I said were I was going, they made it a point to say I was in walking distance. So had to Explain I just came from the movie. When the cab for me came he said the same thing. When I explained about the movie I just came from, he laughed at me 😂😂😂 I was so embarrassed. It was a quiet dark suburban neighborhood. So embarrassed!!!😂

Especially if you don’t think you can handle it. You know yourself better than anyone. Both are fantastic movies though!! 🤩

If you've never seen True Detective season 1 it's similar to this. It has Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as the lead detectives. It's my favorite character Matthew McConaughey has played. Each season is it's own story but season 1 is the best by far.
Keep it up Frank your killing it with these reviews. That 100k plaque will be yours in no time.

The scenes with Hannibal and Clarice are some of my all-time favorite scenes on film, period. Brilliant in every way. Believable character motivations, nuances of performance, great camera work, and so on.
Then in the film, they spend the whole beginning of the movie building up Hannibal as the scariest of bad guys and yet he NEVER disappoints. As built up as he is, he still exceeds what you think he is. He’s always in control. Always calm. Vicious and brilliant.

I think Crawford sent Starling to Lecter as an intentional provocation. Lecter is Crawford's biggest catch, and by sending a student, Crawford is signaling to Lecter that (1) he's not as important as he used to be, and (2) that Crawford believes he's irrelevant to the current case.
I think #2 is actually a lie--that Crawford does believe Lecter has information, but he's creating a situation where Lecter is motivated to prove his own relevance.

Such an iconic performance by Anthony Hopkins, despite having such a limited amount of screen time he captivated his audience enough to win an Oscar for his portrayal of Lecter. Jodie Foster did a wonderful job as well n too bad she's not on the sequel but it's a good movie still

RE: "Based on a True Story"; As it happens, No, this isn't based on a true story, not even loosely. Author Thomas Harris was lucky enough, though, to sell the rights to Hollywood back in the 1980s, which must have inspired him to continue to expand on the character of Lecter. Eventually, in order to explain a complex set of circumstances for Lecter's childhood Harris decided that he should come from Eastern Europe and be a war orphan as a consequence of World War Two. This is certainly for symbolic reasons, involving the National Socialists as well as the Communists, and it certainly explains Lecter's love of individual freedom, as well as his peculiar set of ethics. He might be clinically and criminally insane, but he wouldn't dream of killing everyone.

And he wants to change that part but mistook it for having gender disphoria . I'm a little sensitive on the subject because this movie put trans folks public perception back decades...this serial killer is the first or only person a lot of people think of when they hear trans 😢
