You say Hannibal didn't know anything about the case? When he first met her, he showed Starling a drawing he made of Belvedere, in Italy. Where did she find Buffalo Bill? Belvedere, OHIO. He knew...
Clarice noticed the drawing in the wall, actually, and they represent the Duomo of Florence seen from belvedere (a terrace on a hill with a panoramic view on Florence). I think its just a coincidence.
Hannibal drops clues about Buffalo Bill throughout the movie. He says the drawing in his cell is of a church called the Belvedere; Bill lives in Belvedere, Ohio. His parting words to the Senator are "Love your suit," while Bill is making a skin suit with her daughter. He's toying with everyone he meets.
21:03 - I always read that as the previous team missed it because they were blokes and never considered it. But Starling, being the underdog female (the way the film shows it), may have considered that as a good hiding place for a young girl's private things.
Thank you gentlemen! Your reviews are my favorite!!! Getting close to 100,000! Hope we have a celebration. You deserve so much more! Much love and appreciation sent your way.
It is fairly loyal to the book (the ending being the main difference) and the main set-pieces are great. But the problem for me is that the story isn't as urgent (there isn't a full moon deadline or a victim to rescue) and also the stylistic choices in that film are distracting.
I saw this in the theater when it came out and it completely freaked me out for days after just knowing people like this exist. No movie has ever affected me that way before or since. After decades of watching true crime, murder, and mayhem on TV and in movies I'm unfortunately totally desensitized to it. Also, Beatrice Straight holds the record for the shortest screen time to win an Oscar, with 5 minutes and 40 seconds of screen time in Network (which is a great movie).
When it was playing in theatres Hopkins liked to go and see it. He’d sit behind the most nervous-looking person he could find and when it was over tap them on the shoulder and say “So, did you enjoy the movie?” in his Lecter voice. Legend has it that he had to stop doing it after he was at a screening where the film broke just after Lecter’s escape. He shouted “It’s OK, everyone, stay calm” in that voice and nearly caused a riot… (probably untrue, but Hopkins is certainly capable of it)
The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked Ted Bundy to create a profile for the green river killer, when they finally caught him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Catherine is kidnapped is also inspired by Bundy who would fake having a broken arm and act like he was struggling to get something in his car to get women to help him and when they did he would hit them over the head and push them into his car. Buffalo bill was inspired by a few killers like Ed Gein who besides killing three people he would also dig up recently buried bodies and use them to make things like a pair of gloves and a lamp shade made out of skin and furniture made from bones and skulls. I found out a few months ago that the actors who played bill and Catherine actually dated while filming the movie. Jodie foster said that Anthony Hopkins ad libbed the line about her shoes and her accent which she was hurt by because she had worked hard on her West Virginia accent. The poodle also appeared in the movies the burbs with Tom Hanks and Pee wees Big adventure.
Don't forget that there's also British serial killer Robert Maudsley who served as the inspiration for the glass cell as Maudsley himself currently lives in a prison cell in the basement of HMP Wakefield AKA the Monster Mansion and Maudsley's prison cell is described as being very identical to Lector's one
Hannibal with Mads was the best late night cooking show. It actually inspired me to become a better home chef. I know that sounds wrong, but tell me the food didn't look amazing outside of what it was supose to be. Great show and I wish there was more.
You should check out the book, "Feeding Hannibal: A Connoisseur's Cookbook"! It's written Janice Poon, the food stylist for the series. It's full of incredible recipes, stunning photos, and great insights about the show.
Lots of girls had those cheap plastic music boxes with the ballerina. They were very popular. It shows, that only male cops had “searched” for clues. Even though out the 1990’s it has been an uphill battle to have the opportunity, to earn respect not only in the workforce, but also the Armed Forces.
I saw this movie on the very day it debuted. Me and my now husband went on a movie date. He doesn’t like scary movies but I talked him into it bec the only info we had at the time was that it was a thriller mystery movie. We had absolutely NO idea what we were in for….it scared the living 💩 out of both of us. It was such a shock to the system and after our initial terror, we couldn’t believe just how incredible this movie was. Anthony’s academy award winning performance for best actor was so well deserved! I actually watched that year’s Oscars just to see if they were going to choose a horror movie as best picture … and they did. I was so happy. I love this movie.
Okay, glad it's not just me. I wondered if maybe the lads did this to avoid copyright or something, but to even hear the film I had to crank it up high and then their commentary bits were way too loud. If possible, Tom and Shaun, please play the film's audio just a little louder next time? Cheers.
All 3 of the Hopkins films are worth watching. This is the best of them. 'Hannibal' probably weakest. 'Red Dragon' and the earlier 'Manhunter' are both very much worth watching and interesting to contrast. Brian Cox as "Lektor" in 'Manhunter'. 'Hannibal Rising' is fair but reveals perhaps too much of Hannibal's origins.
I add my voice, Manhunter is an older movie isn't with Anthony Hopkins, and I don't think the acting is all that great. Red Dragon is great, so many great actors
It won all top 5 Academy Awards: best picture, director, writing, actor, actress. The first to achieve that was It Happened One Night, a funny funny film, in 1934.
I really like the technique of fully centering the male characters in the frame when they talk at Clarise. It puts the viewer in her shoes and drives home the discomforting experience of the male gaze
The foundation of the relationship between Clairese and Lecter occurs early in their first interview. She's says she's a student and she's there to learn from him. The idea amuses him, and he obviously thinks she has potential. He weighs the idea, then decides to chase her off with a little agression. He could have been so much worse. He and Crawford have been enemies for a decade but he doesn't trap her in that ancient history either. And later doesn't hold her to blame for Crawford's deceit.
Ya gotta see Manhunter. Similar film, a prequel to this with Hannibal. It's like this but with a cool 80's feel to it. The lead actor is in another film called To Live and Die in LA and man is that a great film that no one seems to be reacting to. Really cool way that it's filmed. It's a bit like Heat filmed in the 80's..and is directed by the Exorcist director William Friedkin.
I don’t know if you remember this but when I was a child there was a tv called basil brush show and I remember they referred this film in it. At the time I didn’t have a clue obviously but when I watched Silence of the lambs in my teens I was like OMG this was referenced in a kids show.
Saw this as a kid and it left a HUGE impression. For a while I leaned towards 'Manhunter' as my favourite Hannibal Lector film (high on Michael Mann at the time) and it's still great... but this is faultless!
In the book, one of his clues to the identity of the killer is the chemical formula for bilirubin (probably not spelling that right). This is the killer’s name (Billy Rubin), but it’s also the colouring agent in shit and is said to be the exact same shade as Doctor Chiltern’s hair. Part of the reason it took so long to get a sequel is that Thomas Harris takes years between books. He’s sort of the anti-Stephen King when it comes to his output.
Just my personal opinion, but I rank the Hannibal franchise: 1. Silence of the Lambs 2. Hannibal TV Series 3. Manhunter 4. Red Dragon 5. Hannibal ……..Daylight………. 6. Hannibal Rising
I first saw this film back in 1991 when I was 14. I was under the legal age, but I happened to be on a cruise ship between Sweden and Finland, and for some absurd reason, they showed films......in the bar! Me and a friend just casually walked in and sat down and watched it, while the staff (who'd normally kick us out) had their hands busy with the drunks! I can't say it was a great screening because there were fights and angry yelling breaking out every so often in the background, but we still enjoyed the film immensely. That's the sign of a good film!
7:50 Nothing says "romance" like killing somebody for you (see also Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette). However, I'm not sure that this is what people mean when they say that someone is talking them to death.
The fact that this film won 5 Academy Awards is a testament to how degenerate and depraved Hollywood is. Every scene in this movie is gratuitous or disgusting.
What do you mean WHY didn't Clarice leave and then bring the cops back to BB's location?? Because he might have the senator's daughter hostage and by the time she comes back she might not be alive. The fact that a cop came sniffing around could spook BB into either moving her to a different location or killing her and getting rid of the body.
Rosemary's Baby? The Omen? An American Werewolf in London? Alien? Bram Stoker's Dracula? Get Out? And _Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde_ from 1931 was the first horror film to win an Oscar. You couldn't be more off the mark if you tried.😄
I remember when this movie came out.I like when you react to movies made before 1995.I love your react to channel, but please do more older movies reactions since I nearly ever watch movies made after 1995.
Classic movie. For me the most disturbing scene was when Lector was trussed up in that trolley to meet the senator. I mean, this is not an alien or typical movie monster, it's an actual human being, so dangerous that they are forced to do that. I do remember though, everyone in the cinema (including me) laughing at the line "Catherine Martin? FBI. You're safe!" 😅
@@sidnew2739 I dunno. A tiny trainee FBI agent in a dank, dark house playing cat and mouse with a seriously twisted serial murderer and all of a sudden everyone's "safe?" It was an emotional release.
Please watch "Red Dragon" next. It's the prequel to "Silence...". Starring Edward Norton, Harvey Keitel und a fantastic Ralph Fiennes. And of course Anthony Hopkins ;-)
I'm in the minority of fans I guess, but I love the 2nd film. I found it to be beautifully shot and delving more into Hannibal was exactly what I wanted to see. Not to take away from Silence of the Lambs or Jodi Foster, her performance was brilliant, but I loved Julianne Moore as Clarice in Hannibal. Hoping you guys check it out! Curious to hear your thoughts on it. ❤
Glad to see this reaction, such a great thriller! I'd like to recommend 2 movies usually left aside by reactors: The Skeleton Key, very creepy and lots of scares, and The House That Jack Built, which it's kinda heavy to see but also great due to its dark humour and hidden themes!
Hi Tom & Shaun, Not sure you realize that this is one of the only Horror/ Thriller movies that WON the Academy Award for Best picture in 1992 as well as Jodie Foster Won best actress & Anthony Hopkins Won best actor! It may not say so on IMDb, tho I have a Google phone so if you Google the movie & press Awards it'll show you everything that this Fantastic horror/thriller film one in 1992! BTW I personally think I rate this film 8.9 or 9 out of 10 stars.😊
It’s definitely great seeing reactions to this film. One part entertaining, one part intriguing, and all parts tense make it such an incredible film to watch and analyze. In so many ways more than one it almost makes you feel as if you’re in Clarice’s shoes trying to navigate Lector’s cryptic clues, which he subtly sprinkles throughout his dialogue interactions before the case file is read. The entire cast gives extremely solid performances and Jonathan Demme truly knocked it out of the park as director, proving so many of his doubters wrong that he could go beyond the tone he had established in his prior films and deliver an excellent film that wasn’t totally in his normal range. Great reaction guys, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. 😊
Great reaction as always, guys! You get better and better at this every time and could truly teach some university level courses on film at this point, I would think. One quick correction - when you mention Jodi Foster's voice and being worried about being annoyed by it, because you can only think of 'The Incredibles' - that's actually a different actress - Holly Hunter. But spot-on because both women have extremely similar, and specific types of voices. Anyway, always looking forward to the next one. Hoping you do 'Creepshow' at some point, unless I missed it and you've done it already. I'll have to check.
The first book, Red Dragon was adapted to film twice. Before Silence in the 1980s with stylistic choices for the time with a small budget. It was called Mind Hunter. The second adaptation was Red Dragon, made as a prequel, had a big budget and its was hugh compared to the other film. But it was tied closely to the same cinematic choices as Silence. Still, I like both productions. I don't really like the later books, movies and prequels. They become less and less based on sound developmental psychology, giving spurious " reasons" for Dr Lector's behavior. Hannibal Lector's brain is broken. His amygdala, where we experience emotions, including empathy for others, doesn't function properly. He was born that way or sustained the damage when he was a baby. Most psychopaths aren't dangerous and know there's rules they must and do follow. They already get enough bad press, without folks being scared their livers are going to be eaten any moment. But I honestly don't blame anyone for cashing in on the character's popularity. It's a fictional character after all.
Red Dragon, the film, is actually a remake of the movie Manhunter from 1986. It stars William Petersen in the lead role and Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter. It’s definitely worth watching. Red Dragon is very much on par with the Silence Of The Lambs, but the sequel Hannibal leaves much to be desired. It’s OK, but a definite slip in quality and Jodie Foster not wanting to reprise the role of Clarice Starling definitely hurt the film’s chances at holding an audience. Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling is not as convincing and is often distracting. She’s a fine actress in her own right, but she was all wrong for that role.
Foster and Hopkins both confessed to each other they were scared of each other and wouldn't ever talk on set at first lol This is one of y favourite films with two of the most amazing actors ever, amazing reaction guys thank you !
Well, Jodie confessed that, but Anthony didn't say anything of the sort. He actually wanted to approach her, but she was the one who was avoiding him. I'm not saying this to antagonize you or anything, but simply because he never said that.
Great review of the best Serial killer film - a classic 🤩 Novelist Thomas Harris based Jack Crawford on real life FBI BAU Profiler John Douglas (his books are amazing too 👍 Buffalo Bill is based on 3 serial killers - Ted Bundy (cast/crutches to appear as non threatening, Ed Gein (Skin Suit) and Gary Heidnik (Holding women in a pit) Well deserved Oscars for this film - Anthony Hopkins is captivating 🏆🤩 Watch Red Dragon next 👍
The sequel could not truly adapt the book it was based on. In the book the author almost plays Lecter to Jodie Foster, both referencing Starling as if he was talking about Foster and giving the film such a messed up conclusion it's like he was daring Foster to do it, which she didn't. Also, they play mind games with the reader. You go in the characters' heads. You see that Starling's boss is the good guy but also a disgusting jerk. Then you see Hannibal's the villain BUT his mind is literally a beautiful museum and that he is cultured and has a code of honor. So you don't like the hero and kind of like the villain. So when you get to their confrontation... You're so off balance. And then that finale has a massively different more shocking end than the film version. I won't spoil it but I had to force myself to read it to finish the book and felt really traumatized by it. Not the same with Hannibal movie's ending.
the singer chis isaak (wicked game ) appears in the film as one of the guards in the lift scene-upon its release the lgbt community complained about the character buffalo bill and the director jonathon demme then went onto make the brilliant philadelphia with tom hanks and denzil washington about the aids epidemic-silence of the lambs is a classic
Tom and Sean, how does the color of your hair look the same?!? Are you just both Scottish or English Red(dish) heads? 🙄 The person in the tub was Mrs. Lipman! 😉
Just popping in to say I found the volumes fine. Could hear both you and the film perfectly with my volume only half way up. I mean sound quality could be better but it’s not unwatchable like some are exaggerating. I enjoyed this reaction.
Great advice. I think it is, arguably, as good as this movie. Just a totally different style. I think the killer is actually much more scary. Great book too!
There was one season of a show called Clarice right before Covid that takes place right after the events of this movie. I enjoyed it. I like all the movies to varying degrees and the show Hannibal is good but ngl a bit pretentious 😅
Jodie Foster describe3d nightmares she was having after making this movie which is why she rejected doing the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS follow up movie - HANNIBAL.
@@rustincohle2135 actually we're both wrong. It's not from nightmares or she didn't like the script....Jodie said in 2005 that she declined because she was doing another project at the same time and had to decline Hannibal.
The books are great, i read the series about a decade ago for the 1st time... i felt similar to them as i did the films if I'm honest, i absolutely loved three of them but I really didnt really like Hannibal Rising... i felt sorry for the author Thomas Harris. The studio that made the films said they wanted an origin film and if he didnt do it, they'd just do it without his input. He wrote the book simply to ensure that he got to write it. forced to rush a story that imo shouldnt have been told 😂 poor guy
always think buffalo bill looks like a young david lee roth when's he's dancing around bare chested in that costume but u guys probably don't know who I'm talking about haha⚛😀
**easter egg** !! This is one of my favorite hidden film gems. Look at the movie poster , the face of Clarice with the moth over her mouth. Now , zoom in on the moth, and look at the skull design of the moth .
Thanks, Tom! Thanks, Shaun! 😱 I saw this one in a free screening just before it opened wide. The audience was very expressive! I loved it then and still love it. I also have enjoyed all the prequels, sequels and associated tv series. But this one is a true jewel. 💎 Kudos to director Jonathan Demme.
"i'm having an old friend for dinner" is the best ending line ever lolol

Micheal Mann's Manhunter(86) is a better adaptation of the Red dragon than Red dragon(02)
Absolutely. Red Dragon 2002 I thought was very poor, and Fiennes' Dolarhyde was weak.
Both Manhunter and Red Dragon are flawed, there's a good movie somewhere in between them.
I think 'Red Dragon' followed the book better, but 'Manhunter' worked better as a film in general.

I don't agree at all with those who say the sequel Hannibal isn't that good. I think it's a really great movie and you should def watch it 👍🏻
This is definitely a certified classic! And yeah it's definitely one of the cooler names for a film lol..
Clerks 2 parody on Buffalo Bill is hilarious. 😂
A perfect 10. One of the first 3 18 rated movies I saw. The other 2, T2 and Goodfellas. 3 masterpieces. 😊
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. This was the first and only Horror Thriller Film to win any category
Misery?
The Exorcist (1973) won 2. Jaws (1975) won 3.
I don't really consider this a horror movie, psychological thriller.
Rosemary's Baby? The Omen? An American Werewolf in London? Alien? Bram Stoker's Dracula? Get Out? And _Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde_ from 1931 was the first horror film to win an Oscar. You couldn't be more off the mark if you tried.😄
I remember hearing a story that his wife left him eventually after this role because it freaked her out so bad.
Classic cinema with the night vision goggles and basement scene. Great movie.
What's funny about that?
@@sidnew2739 I dunno. A tiny trainee FBI agent in a dank, dark house playing cat and mouse with a seriously twisted serial murderer and all of a sudden everyone's "safe?" It was an emotional release.
Definitely react to the 80's 'Manhunter'.
This novel/movie is inspired by a real FBI case.
I love this movie one of my favorites.Im happy ur doing horror movies again.
HANNIBAL is great and worth watching!
Those weren't computers, they were microfilm readers
Hi Tom & Shaun, Not sure you realize that this is one of the only Horror/ Thriller movies that WON the Academy Award for Best picture in 1992 as well as Jodie Foster Won best actress & Anthony Hopkins Won best actor! It may not say so on IMDb, tho I have a Google phone so if you Google the movie & press Awards it'll show you everything that this Fantastic horror/thriller film one in 1992! BTW I personally think I rate this film 8.9 or 9 out of 10 stars.😊
17:59 - "Bonesaw is ready!"
guys, this is your worst reaction. your laughter and cheerful chatter were out of place.
Red Dragon is a very good movie.
AMAZING FILM. WELL ACTED WELL PLAYED
Love the tagline for the sequel Hannibal……it was released on Valentines Day……..
“He’ll have your Heart” 👀😎
Foster and Hopkins both confessed to each other they were scared of each other and wouldn't ever talk on set at first lol
This is one of y favourite films with two of the most amazing actors ever, amazing reaction guys thank you !
Well, Jodie confessed that, but Anthony didn't say anything of the sort. He actually wanted to approach her, but she was the one who was avoiding him. I'm not saying this to antagonize you or anything, but simply because he never said that.
@@Square-ow7oq Foster did say that Hopkins answered " I was scared of you too!" while laughing
@juliettepsvy1026 yeah, that's what i said. Jodie said that in an interview, not hopkins
@@Square-ow7oq So Hopkins did confess to Jodie.
@@juliettepsvy1026 how do you know that?
JODIE FOSTER WAS TERRIFIED OF HOPKINS. SO EFFECTIVE WAS HE.
Great review of the best Serial killer film - a classic 🤩 Novelist Thomas Harris based Jack Crawford on real life FBI BAU Profiler John Douglas (his books are amazing too 👍 Buffalo Bill is based on 3 serial killers - Ted Bundy (cast/crutches to appear as non threatening, Ed Gein (Skin Suit) and Gary Heidnik (Holding women in a pit)
Well deserved Oscars for this film - Anthony Hopkins is captivating 🏆🤩
Watch Red Dragon next 👍
You NEED to watch Red Dragon and Hannibal also
Tom and Sean, how does the color of your hair look the same?!? Are you just both Scottish or English Red(dish) heads? 🙄
The person in the tub was Mrs. Lipman! 😉
Just popping in to say I found the volumes fine. Could hear both you and the film perfectly with my volume only half way up. I mean sound quality could be better but it’s not unwatchable like some are exaggerating. I enjoyed this reaction.
You should watch Manhunter. I like it better than any of the Hannibal movies.
very good movie, manhunter is also good, and the first two seasons of Hannibal
I recommend watching Manhunter. Brian Cox really has an interesting take on the Hannibal Lecter character.
Great advice. I think it is, arguably, as good as this movie. Just a totally different style. I think the killer is actually much more scary. Great book too!
Please check out Manhunter ! Think you’ll dig the vibe
There was one season of a show called Clarice right before Covid that takes place right after the events of this movie. I enjoyed it.
I like all the movies to varying degrees and the show Hannibal is good but ngl a bit pretentious 😅
Wow! I was 18 when this came out. I could be your mom.
captain of "MONK"😂
I remember watching this with my parents and brother walked in. What did he say? "I can smell your feet."
Jodie Foster describe3d nightmares she was having after making this movie which is why she rejected doing the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS follow up movie - HANNIBAL.
She didn't do _Hannibal_ cuz she didn't like the script.
@@rustincohle2135 I saw an interview that described from nightmares. Or maybe it was both too.
Oh wow lol
One the all time classics
Moths are very very dusty, that powder gets on everything including your eyes
Thanks, Tom! Thanks, Shaun! 😱 I saw this one in a free screening just before it opened wide. The audience was very expressive! I loved it then and still love it. I also have enjoyed all the prequels, sequels and associated tv series. But this one is a true jewel. 💎 Kudos to director Jonathan Demme.
Hannibal is tearing up when Clarice finishes her story about the ranch. He really does feel sorry for her having to go through that and you can tell👍🏼
