  • If you have a kayak live bait bucket, you have had live bait die on you - even if you have a bait bucket bubbler. I make a simple bait bucket DIY hack to a Frabill bait bucket that improves the flow in the kayak bait holder, and will keep your bait alive longer. You can do this to any bait bucket.

    If I used live bait, I’d definitely try this. I love a good practical solution.

    The frabil flow troll is a "trolling" bait bucket. It's meant to be trolled behind or beside a moving boat. I've used them successfully for years. Never used a bait bucket on a kayak.
    I simply catch my bait as I need it and another solution might be a cricket cage... the whole thing is wire mesh.
    Modifying the Flow troll and the cost of extra parts is just too much trouble for me.
    Thanks for the ideas though!

    I like the idea. I was thinking the same thing as someone else mentioned. How about putting the stoppers in from the inside? Other than having your hand in the bucket, I'd say it's a great idea.

    A great idea as usual. It would work for bait buckets putt off a dock. To carry it very far, use the stoppers of get a 5 gal bucket with water in the bottom and set it in there for transport. If you put one off a dock, remember that otters can open them and eat all of your bait overnight.

    Have you tried using a step bit? These things are amazing. They leave little to no burring of the plastic like regular drill bits do.. Hope this helps. Are this fish biting yet? I live here in NC and will be in Topsail in about two more weeks for surf fishing.

    hi Steve, I did what you asked and I put my thinking cap on and I think I have a similar solution that will be even cheaper. Instead of telling you I will do it and make a video and leave a link to your video in my video and tell viewers to watch yours to see where I got the original idea from.

    drill 2 holes or 3 to the top to store yer topppers, plus a step drill bit has a slight tapper which with a 1/4 turn is tighter

    Ok. I'm just learning ways to use my kayak for fishing and I just happen to have a Frabill bait bucket and have seen the problems with the water flow through. I like the idea of drilling holes to allow the water to flow through better but what do you use stoppers for? Just in case you're using the bait bucket outside of the water? So the water won't flow out when you pull the bucket out of the water? I imagine you only put them in when you pull the bucket up to get another bait so you don't let the water run out. Am I correct in my assumption?

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  3 года назад

      Yes, there are times when you will want to carry the bucket with bait. So, that is why I added stoppers.

    Will the frabil fit into a 5 gallon bucket? If so use said bucket to carry the frabil to and from the yak with no loss of water

    Has your bait ever died using this bucket? I have been using these type ( Plano, Flambeau and this Frabil) everything from crappie minnows, smelt and even shiners, l for over twenty years.... never had my baits die in these. Also that angle the bucket sits at is cheap insurance just incase the door is not shut or left unlocked....

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  3 года назад

      Yes, it has. I believe it is because the water is warm... high 80s ... and there is not enough flow.

    Why not relocate the weight to the seam ?
    That would allow it to float flat.
    Sticky wheel weights could be added so it would float deeper.
    1/8" holes could be drilled on the back side below the handle.

      All good thoughts. I added weight to the front to level it out - ruclips.net/video/gHrj9EfAhGA/видео.html

      On a kayak that seems like a pain. batteries getting wet and having to deal with replacing them mid trip would be a pain. on a boat thats ideal.

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  3 года назад

      The bubbler adds oxygen and does help. The issue is the ammonia from the waste. It accumulates and kills the bait even with a bubbler.
