Honestly the indian film industry shud be put to blame- rather than casting people for their talent- which is abundant in india being a diverse country- theyre being cast for their eurocentric beauty for eg: varun dahwan, sara ali khan, disha patani, jhaanvi kapoor- etc (lots more honestly) they literally have no talent in the field of acting, setting unrealistic standards which have become the social norms which objectifies beauty. Beauty is objective in india. and that is because of small and narrow minded people like sara ali khan whos the misogyny has etched itself into the minds of her young audience :)
A common Indian woman should not feed to the idea of fair is beautiful in the first place. If every dark and tan Indian girl did that, there will be no place for fair is beautiful in our society by all means. If a common girl uses a fairness cream at night and feeds into the idea, she will tend to do the same to her future generations. Where is the growth then?
Jigyasa Sharma they do. If at least a lot of them don’t, the fairness cream industry wouldn’t be that big. So why do we take that culture on instead of pushing back and saying “no, I’m beautiful...this is who I am and deal with it”. It’s not just about skin colour, it’s the same with everything else. We first have to accept ourselves before expecting others to accept us.
Jigyasa Sharma it’s sad that society does but if we claim that women are strong and this and that, then why are women not pushing that? Why are we complaining about that? I was born to a super fair father and a super dark mother in a the same society. I’ve seen my mother go through the same but damn, she’s strong. So why can’t every woman be like that. I can't believe that people in the comments are seriously agreeing and cheering for Sara after saying something so incredibly tone deaf. She obviously doesn't get the depths of colorism and how she ultimately will never face the negative side effects of that because of her lighter skin tone. For her to sit up there (coming from a rich privileged background, having lighter skin, having her movie career practically HANDED to her) for her to just so blatantly say that people who suffer the disadvantages of colorism "should just change themselves because the world isn't going to change." is not just INCREDIBLY ignorant and hurtful but also completely illogical. She could've used this opportunity to talk about the importance of different skin tone representation in the media and how fairness creams shouldn't be advertised by big named celebrities anymore. But she instead pulled out the "we should just work very hard on ourselves" - card. Your skin tone should of course not hinder you in trying to achieve what you want but it is important to highlight that there is a general prejudice against darker skin in Indian society. People are bullied, scrutinized and forced into trying to change something they were born with to fit an unrealistic "beauty standard", which was born out of the traumatic history of the enslavement of Millions and Millions of Indians by British people during colonization. This shit runs deep, it isn't just a hair color or a bronzer/ powder you put on. This is blatant internalized self hate which stems from generational trauma. It is a toxic mindset which promotes that people with lighter skin are ultimately the ones who are more successful /beautiful/intelligent and that darker skin people are the exact opposite of that. This should be discussed openly and respectfully and not simply named as something "silly" you should just get over with. The interviewer wasn't "rude" for asking her these type of questions, she was just simply doing her job. She is in the right to ask a public figure like Sara to take a stand on these current matters. As a Columbia graduate I would've expected her to be more sensitive about this topic but her answer has proven that she clearly doesn't care for social-issues that are outside of her own celebrity-bubble.
Finally someone speaking some actual truth. The comments genuinely have made me feel gaslighted. Her answer was condescending, ignorant and reeked of privilege. The interviewer, yes was probing for an answer but it was on a topic she probably assumed a well educated women, whom i believe has a Political Science degree would be well versed and articulate with an answer in such topic. I too study Political Science and can confirm discussions on such topic are frequent and guarantee writing in an essay "if you want to be fairer wear powder, darker wear bronzer - it doesn't really matter" would not suffice the lecturer.
The reasons why people cheer for her: *she's beautiful and fair, so SIMP mode activated *Other mainstreamactresses (not all; but most) sound comparatively dumb n don't give a damn about anything other than raking in popularity and views for shaking their a$$es to misogynistic songs * No matter how tone deaf the statements is, if u try to sound intelligent n convincing enough, ppl will accept whatever u say if u come from a privileged background... typical Indian celebrity worship mentality is at play here. Just my thoughts
Absolutely true. It's ridiculous how she never addressed the problem. People have low self esteem because they can't see to fit in these artificial canons of beauty. We live in a world which capitalises on our insecurities and how blatantly these Privileged celebrities, like here Sara Ali Khan gives us all a lecture on how to "love" ourselves, but how can we really appreciate ourselves when the world earns it's fucking money by cashing on our self doubt and confidence.
Says the rich upper-class privileged fair skinned one. Lmao I can't believe people don't see the problem in her statement and are actually agreeing with her!!!
She should learn something from South Indian actress Sai Pallavi. Even though she's a fair skin tonned actress, she chose to reject a fairness cream deal of 2 crore because she understands and sympathises with what dark skin girls go through. She understands her responsibility of being an actress and an influencer. She's not ignorant. She said her own younger sister went through this at home for being just a tone darker to her. She gave her own example and made sure to do what's right and give her sister and people alike some kind of solace. Also, she's a doctor. So yes that's pure beauty with brains right there. But you don't need to be educated to be empathetic. That's just basic human instinct and it all boils down to upbringing, virtues and your personal choice.
Why should she learn these things in the first place. Sara is educated. For her colourism shouldn't be an issue. It's not about changing yourself. She is discussing cosmetics. All actress use foundation. She just discussed powder and spray tan. There are some really pale white people in western world that use bronzer . It's really popular.
"There is a larger probablity and a higher success rate for you to attempt to change yourself rather than change the world. Because they are not going to change." -Sara
The problem is bigger and more harmful in the inside than it looks on the outside. What she said is not care about society and do what you feel like, which is right. It then gives us the power to proudly walk in the streets in our naked natural skin. But I think there's a difference between wanting to be fair/tanned & enjoying a fair/tanned look for a day or so depending on a situation. I am a dusky skin and i mentally suffered alot inside. I was never confident. It took me years to get through and the process is still going on. I loved makeup but with a wrong reason. And now im bold enough to go days looking natural without makeup. And now i use makeup for a different reason. I think we donot need to change ourselves. But we're always born loving ourselves. Hate was shown by people. I noticed something is wrong in my skin color only when people started pointing out. Change can be brought only when we are confident in ourselves, not letting anybody break us and then we can go to change the world. Cos people will throw stones at u when u go out to change people's mentality bout something. So we need to build ourselves strong. Also its true all will not change. But it doesn't mean there wont be any change at all. Then why not try.
She says all those things with so much confidence and conviction that one tends to agree with them. But when listened to carefully I don't agree with most of her views. She is constantly trying to belittle the issues. For eg. Saying that skin colour insecurities are not as important and can be solved by putting a bronzer or powder just shows that she doesn't care or know enough...Being the youth idol she is, rather than telling people to appreciate and be comfortable in their own skin and that the society needs to change its perception as a whole, she is saying that one must change themselves. Why should we, when the problem isn't with us? Turning a blind eye towards the problems in the society and just accepting that it's not gonna change is just careless and ignorant of her. I mean, you are the youth and being in the position you are it is your responsibility to take a step towards improving the society and if you can't do that, don't just declare that it's not gonna change. Clearly, she hasn't faced such problems and thus doesn't believe that it is a big one.
the bronzer and powder thing, albeit a bit insensitive, was said to show that you can change your skin colour with simple things like these and it’s not something you should feel sad about and you should accept yourself just the way you are. I don’t think she is insensitive or sheltered. If she gave answers the PC way, then I’d think she was sheltered. Her having these views shows that she knows all about this and knows what is right and wrong.
But isn’t she just saying to give into the pressure and change yourself because no one else is going to change tho. I also think this statement is ignorant by the way she just says it like it’s so simple and easy to change your appearance. Darker skinned people are going to stay dark no matter how much powder they rub on their face and instead of blaming society for its distorted values she puts the blame on young dark girls for simply not putting powder on.
@@gogulsaji6933 I agree. The issue isn't about some petty bronzer or powder but how young girls tend to give in to that pressure put by the society about her skin colour. @Mzmzmzm Sndjs not her fault to be born into a rich family ofc. Never said that. But does it justify her ignorance? She's rich, so it's expected of her to be not aware? That's wrong. Educating yourself doesn't have anything to do with being rich or poor. Ig being not aware and ignorant is a choice not an ascribed at birth thingy. And the example you gave is pretty illogical. @Valentine Vanessa she is right about how one should change oneself instead of changing the entire world... But she just staight away denies the toxicity and pressure dark skinned people face because of the society claiming that there is nothing such as pressure or stress...
@Valentine Vanessa she stills says, 'what is the pressure in it? '. Her response to the question is similar to asking a depressed person to just be happy. In entirety I feel like the messge in was trying to convey was not entirely wrong. But the way she phrased sounded faulty disreagrding the stress people go through because of the toxicity in society.
@Valentine Vanessa I agree with you. But first I didn't expect her anything to be this epitome of words or stuff. But she should just look after the words she says more carefully. Second, I am not hating against her or comepletely vilifying her. I am just disagreeing with her opinion.

I don’t like Burkha’s way of conducting an interview either, but Sara was way out of line. She just proved that she is indeed privileged and ignorant to a point where she doesn’t see the root of the problem and how it affect women of all ages in India.
Sarah's fans make her out to be such a great feminist that stands for the Indian Youth, but they don't realize that what Sarah's doing is not telling you to fight the patriarchy or the colorism, she's telling you to silently slide into it.
Why is nobody talking about that "women safety at night" statement of hers? Such personalities who cannot make the best use of the position that they hold and not bring out the truest message in a moral crisis should better be unemployed... And yes Sara we do not like the role of women (Secondary) as potrayed in Bollywood movies, it's you people who feed the same to different generations. I hope you don't fall into doing any of their women-downplayed-as-objects-item songs, or have you? Cannot believe she's a Columbia graduate!
Exactly. I was really shocked to see a woman saying that we are not equal and that we should follow these norms that were forced to us. Also the fact that we can't change the "world" Plain ignorant and stupid.
@Harshita Munjal why should you limit yourself because of those sick people. Honestly your statement is showing that patriarchy is deep rooted into our societal construction. Criminals who do this think the same way, girl on the street at night should be molested because she isn't supposed to be there? These narratives were fed since archial times which does nothing more than victim-blaming at the end of the incident. Girls need to voice their rights more so that it won't be prevalent for our next generations.
Okay. Don't limit yourself. Walk alone at 3:00 am behind any railway station for one hour. Expand yourself. Or maybe better. If you have a daughter . Tell her to go out at 3:00 am alone. Just to have some fresh air and see the world. Women safety is the crux of the whole issue. It is very compromised and the main reason for this dirth is there is and has been no political will to ensure it.
She's that person who's so scared of expressing an opinion, ending up vaguely touching everything, with every word that can be interpreted in both ways, negatively and positively, and finally ending up hated by everyone.

you can't pressurize me to change my way of viewing what's a perfect "woman" though. I still believe a fit woman does look good and most importantly she takes care of herself

@@joeysal007 Nobody is pressurizing anyone, sir. Everyone has their own preferences- nobody is universally "perfect". Fitness is great, but it is not everyone's choice. Are YOU fit? If you are, great, your choice. If not, that's fine too- but you definitely can't define someone else by a standard you do not live to yourself. One can choose a partner to their personal taste, but can't shame others. In any case, the responsibility to be fit is a woman's personal choice, she certainly does not owe it to anyone but HERSELF and cannot be shamed for it. And it is also true, that historically a woman's beauty on a public platform ( in art, science, media) has been defined by men, instead of women themselves as men were the sole consumers and that needs to change as per the role of women as equal consumers in society today. That is all, thanks. :)

Also, appreciating an actor or actress' body because one is attracted to them is not the problem with "male/female gaze"( if someone is inappropriate to anyone that makes them ( regardless of sex) at fault) . The "male gaze" is not a problem by its existence but by the setting of the beauty standard for WOMEN, to satisfy a man's gaze or a man's version of attractive instead of a WOMAN'S own choice, is problematic. A simple search about the "male gaze" would teach you the difference between its existence ( fine ) and its misuse to dictate standards for women ( not fine ) . raunaq lal wth colorism is a huge issue especially in ugly ass India. People have literally killed themselves over the harassment they face due to their dark skin
The hell are you talking about. In the social context of India colourism is extremely relevant issue. If she doesn’t know much about it, due to her privilege of being a light skinned woman in India, then she should have said she doesn’t know rather then making many dusky and dark skinned women feel like it’s their own fault as to why they feel like shit about themselves.
Hr1dyaA yea I used like her too. I was extremely disappointed after seeing this interview, her take on women safety and colourism in India was just regressive and shallow. Her answers just reflected her privilege as a rich light skinned women.
"If you wanna be tanned put bronzer and if you wanna be fair put some powder" Wooow!!!!👏👏You definitely don't know how much people have gone through because of this
Then you should give me the right answer to that stupid question? Apart from therapy which is also very expensive I can't think of anything else. I have been bullied whole my childhood but I never took it serious because 1st. I was fat and 2nd I didn't care what others think of me and it burned the people who used to bully me even more then after years they stopped because they knew it won't bother me. Then they used to bully me because indirectly and I used to play dumb lol
Does she actually think that just 'spray painting yourself' or 'putting on powder' is okay if you're facing problems just because of your skin? The fact that she's so privileged is disgusting. I want someone to interview a DARK SKIN woman who faced problems, not just a light skin girl who was born in wealth and never had to face colorism.
Seriously... Yaha ke logo ko reality shows ka aisa asar hua hai na ki har cheez ko emotionally highlight karne mai hi mazaa aata hai. Ek fair skinned ladki agar bolegi ki joh hai vaise raho toh usko gaali milegi. Yahi cheez ek dark skinned ladki bolegi toh wow this is what we need , she is confident in her own skin. The sheet hypocrisy makes me want to puke on this comment section.
Well in western countries thats what people do. White people get spray tan and dark people use powder. It's cosmetic. Not because they are unhappy with their skin colour. She is educated. How is she supposed to know that people have skin colour issues.
I completely agreed with everything she said, however the one thing I found frustrating with her response is that she doesn't do much acknowleding of the hardships that women with dark skin tone do face. Its true that in this world dark skinned women are going to have face whatever the world gives us, but to brush it off by saying "put on some face powder" is the literally the dumbest thing. Being dark skinned is a huge problem and to minimize the consequences of having it is plain insensitive and privileged.
She didnt say to put on powder bcz society doesnt accept u . She said if U WANT to be fair then put on some powder which is what a lot of dark ppl do . I am a dark ugly ass person and i am absolutely fine with my look bcz it doesnt define me at all.

I've lost complete respect for Sara Ali Khan after this. Just because she has never experienced oppression because she's fair skinned doesn't mean that colorism doesn't exist in fact so many brilliant dark-skinned people were rejected from jobs just because they are dark. I really appreciate Barkha Dutt for counter questioning her and proving how blatant and dumb her points were.
Firstly she is educated. That's why she knows that skin colour isn't anything to be concerned about. Unlike you. And why would anyone ask her a question about colourism in the first place. What dose that got to do with her. No need to play victim over colour when there are more important things to worry about.

Sara doesn't get to be dismissive about this. she's privileged and in a bubble. if she doesn't have empathy, she should stay out of it and not give any statement about it if it's unrelatable to her. she's normalising colourism when she makes such statements and it is extremely harmful to people with darker skin complexion.

To hear her say that in that tone that indicate these things as so-so issues not only says a lot about her mentality but also about her fans that praise her for this speech.
Sara is so irresponsible for downplaying the issue of colourism in India. So so disappointing. And to see all the Indians in the comments defending her, it is sad that they are so unaware of the prejudices we face within our own community, and would rather accept things for how they are rather than stand up, make a difference and create a new generation of Indians that don’t have their self esteem attached to the colour of their skin. The interviewer made such a great point about the inequality between Sara and her brother, women should not have to accommodate men by coming home early, why can’t men just learn not be bloody creeps? Overprotecting women creates a dangerously toxic mindset within men that women are prizes to be competed over, rather than individuals to treat as their equals.

Equating wearing pink nail polish to wearing fairness product is problematic! That comment is similar to what the director of fair and lovely said, a company that is “anything but problematic”.
Archit Dutta this comment section is not a very good sample on what people think of her action. But I am not surprised by the support either, this issue of colourism just flies over people head anyway. There is just not enough advocates in India to educate people on how something, as well intentioned as it may be, can negatively effect an on going movement but also impressionable minds. It takes people around us to change in order for even truly confident dark skinned people to fully accept their skin tone. As a matter of fact, all the support is making me realize how deep rooted colourism is in India. If your interested, read this article www.news18.com/news/buzz/sara-ali-khan-has-no-idea-about-colourism-in-india-2377473.html, maybe they’ll do a better job explaining then me.
Archit Dutta , self confidence is great but self confidence can also be easily destroyed and it’s very hard to gain it when, as I mentioned, everyone is out to break it. Although people do have the right to do what they want with their skin, bleaching and fair and lovely causes bodily damage, and powder just reproduces the notion of hating ones own skin. If in a society majority change their outlook on dark skin then a person with dark skin will definitely have an easier time overcoming their trauma as there won’t be anyone to put them down for their skin as much and we can still stop future minds from being corrupted by the notion of dark skin being unwanted. Self confidence is a solution but it goes hand in hand with a society that is also changing to be more open minded to other type of beauty.
Archit Dutta I think it’s better if you listen to dark women’s people personal experiences instead of listening to her “rose-coloured” and complexity unrealistic solution. I think we the women had a panel on the stigma of dark skin
Archit Dutta, you knowing your sister’s experience doesn’t make it equivalent to you living that exeperince and the struggle. I was also not advising you on anything and nor do I need to. I am a dark skinned woman who has experienced the stigma first hand. I am aware of how important self confidence is, but it’s too flowers and roses to say that harbour self confidence and your problem is solved, which an advise I got from my parents a lot. Self confidence can’t single handedly remove the trauma of having people call you names, ignore and bully you and not to mentions it takes many dark skinned women years just to learn to accept themselves. Sara has more problematic statements then just self confidence, as I mentioned her use of the nail polish is disrespectful regardless of her intention. She is undermining people trauma that ignites them to use fair and lovely or bleach or power.

Your actually comparing skin colour with being rich? Is being fair skin so big. It's people like you is the reason colourism dosent seem to end. What are fair people supposed to say. Bring fair dose matter
Watching this as a Bengali woman who grew up in the UK I feel like, yes she has a lot of good points with a very calm and logical demeanour, and yes the interviewer is very clumsy with poorly worded questions. However, it is clear to me that this actress (idk who she is or her family is) grew up with the privilege of being rich, gorgeous and fair-skinned so has very little idea of these "pressures" that she is being asked about. I cannot imagine living in a country where I have to put a curfew on myself because of "the intentions of the man on the road", and I find it very strange that a fellow woman endorses the kind of society that accepts situations like this. This definitely puts the burden of guilt on the woman "for staying out late" and essentially, "asking for it". As someone who has the power and influence of celebrity she needs to be very careful and insightful about the type of language she uses, and the way it can easily be interpreted as an excuse to hold back positive social reform (as is abundantly obvious in this comments section). India is a beautifully diverse country which is rapidly growing in all aspects of industry and economy it would be nice if the moral and philosophical power of India had a chance to catch up.
@@thejoker1425 It's also practical for some women to have to stay out late to have to work to feed her family or herself. Coming home late isn't just about coming home late...it's the impact of having to come home early..it pushes women to stay behind. Also, she isn't practical bc sometimes you cannot access your power quietly. You cannot quietly say "No I don't want to get married." Her solution seems to be...just don't mind about what people are saying. Well that's hard to do when it's your parents, in-laws, siblings or husband.
@@brotikar9763 EXACTLY! What she says isn't exactly 'wrong' per se, but it's clear that she hasn't seen what this 'pressure', that she talks so lightly about, can actually do. And well, it won't be fair to blame her either, as she has never actually seen people who have it the worst, those who get bullied on a regular basis because of these things and have no one to talk to.. But it doesn't justify her dismissing these struggles as 'trivial'... There's no doubt that she's intelligent and well spoken, but these are sensitive topics that require more insight and context. I see all the people in the comments section only singing praises for her, yet there are so less people who can actually see where she might be wrong and criticize her... Just shows what mob mentality can do to people. I also have classes until night sometimes, (ofc, suspended rn because of lockdown), and my parents get really worried as I travel alone. It's a situation I can't help, and yet I am the one who needs to always stay on my guard just because some people don't know how to raise their own kids... It's just such an effed up world... Ugh.

A common Indian woman should not feed to the idea of fair is beautiful in the first place. If a common girl uses a fairness cream at night and feeds into the idea, she will tend to do the same to her future generations. Where is the growth then?

The reasons why people cheer for her: *she's beautiful and fair, so SIMP mode activated
*Other mainstreamactresses (not all; but most) sound comparatively dumb n don't give a damn about anything other than raking in popularity and views for shaking their a$$es to misogynistic songs
* No matter how tone deaf the statements is, if u try to sound intelligent n convincing enough, ppl will accept whatever u say if u come from a privileged background... typical Indian celebrity worship mentality is at play here.
Just my thoughts

Well said.

@Unsung Songs well said. 👏
The problem is bigger and more harmful in the inside than it looks on the outside.
She not only didn't address how it is embedded in the Indian mindset that fairness is equal to beauty and that the problem is with the society but very casually decided to tell the girls that they should change if they want. It just shows how she thinks and it is not empowering.

No need to play victim over colour when there are more important things to worry about.
we are educated and experienced. we've dealt with the prejudice against dark skinned women first hand.
Barkha tried to trap her with words but she gave it back to barkha's face. She is so honest and practicle. I do thing it takes time to change a society but staying late outside is dangerous. We should be carefull.

To hear her say that in that tone that indicate these things as so-so issues not only says a lot about her mentality but also about her fans that praise her for this speech.
She's the type of person who would say don't be say sad when someone says I'm sad

Sara is unproblematic. Don't try to make mountain out of mole hills Brut!

"This again, what is pressure?" Yeah, can't expect a privileged, fair skinned girl to understand it. So your opinion does not matters anyway.
Most of these bollywood actors/actresses are colonized bodies lost in their own bubbles. It's really sad, and pathetic tbh, when people admire them so uch that they agree with everything they say. Don't be sheep, people. These guys are lost, and they don't deserve your admiration to the extent that you give them. Like their work, cool. Keep it there, though.
Nice name😊😊
Exactly.....I wish more people understood this...but in the light of recent events I think this mentality is slowly changing.....most of these stars are put on an unworthy pedestal.
exactly..!!

It is not easy to be self confident when you have been hearing taunts for being dark since childhood, you can't overcome it easily and you can't gain confidence the way this priviliged woman is saying. We have to raise awareness and raise voices to be the voice of those who have been enable to speak because society had tortured them and as a result most people have lost their confidence and they can't get it back until we all fight these sick norms and offcourse media and celebrities have power to convey strong messages this is offcourse controversy, sara khan seems irresponsible and being ignorant here and she needs to think before expressing her conservative thoughts. We wouldn't get any rights or any freedom if the people before us didn't fight collectively for it. oh if women before you didn't fight for it you wouldn't even get a chance to stay out at day too as it was unsafe at day too, so make your enviroment safe for women so they can go out at night too to run their errands, to work at night shifts, to live their life. Instead of focusing on making enviroment safe for day and night both, she wants women to live in fear and cage. Sarah ali khan is really conservative and thinks if she would convey her shitty thoughts in English she could utter any nonsense..
Perhaps , she attended the most prestigious acting school , that imparted her with the requisite "acting skills " to masquerade her real - self ?
If you think she is the modern -day definition of ' realism ' and genuineness , then you haven't seen the world , sir ! .
You should read more Schopenhauer and Nietzsche to get an induction into the "dank , bleak reality " .
lmao she has no brain whatsoever
She is made famous as a smart girl by a lot of dumb people.
