Michael Portillo embarks on a rail adventure aboard the transcontinental Indian Pacific Railway, which stretches from the southern port city of Adelaide, South Australia, 1,700 miles deep into the desert, to the gold rush town of Kalgoorlie, before finishing in Perth, Western Australia.
First, Michael explores McLaren Vale, where an enterprising early 19th century Briton with a murky past began to grow vines. Michael enjoys the fruits of his labours and hears his story from his great great great granddaughter.
Boarding the mighty Indian Pacific, Michael embraces the luxury of a previous age as he travels across Australia's notoriously remote and inhospitable Nullarbor Plain. He discovers the 100-year-old history behind the ambitious line and the tremendous feat of engineering it took to deliver it. In the ghost town of Cook, Michael helps to top up the train's water and is rewarded with dinner under the stars at Rawlinna. He strikes gold in one of the most lucrative goldfields in the world and strikes it lucky in the traditional Australian gambling game of 'Two Up'.
He pays a flying visit to the doctor to hear how patients in remote Western Australia are cared for, then takes to the skies to admire Perth, one of the world's most isolated cities, and its port of Fremantle. South of the city, in Pinjarra, he uncovers a dark chapter in the histories of both Britain and Australia - a child migration programme devised at the time of Michael’s Bradshaw's Guide.
Back in Perth, Michael hears how Edward VIII was caught up in a train accident near Bridgetown and is invited to an Aussie barbie.

anyone who's brave enough to wear those suits in outback Austalia you've got to love
Hi vis is a bit of a waste on him
Love? I think not.
when I lived at Cook in the early 60`s going to meet the passenger train, which arrived some time around 10 pm from the west was the highlight of the day. We could see the glow of the engine light in the distance about an hour before it arrived. I used to help the train examiner set the diesel pump shed to refuel the engines, (the pump shed was a mass of valves and fuel lines) by directing the fuel through various pipes. Another pass time I enjoyed was shunting, when the " Tea and Sugar " arrived every week. Water and fuel had to be disconnected from the train. I would sit in the fireman`s seat in the engine and direct the driver when he could not see the shunter who was usually the offsider. I think the hierarchy back in Port Augusta would have freaked out if they knew a twelve year old was directing one of their trains from the engine during a shunt. Once when the engine was uncoupled from the train , I actually drove it ( under the watchful eye of the engine driver of course)
What absolutely wonderful memories you have. 😁
Well the series speaks for itself. I watched a few from other commentators but none hold a candle to you Michael. Very very interesting very informative and when broaching the question of historic 'social remedys ' you let us make up our own opinions . Even the issues the 'indiginous folk' of Australia faced and still face you again provided, by your reporting 'style ', a view that allowed us to draw our own conclusions. Michael this is surely your forte !
Brought back memories of when we took the then Transcontinental in 1963. Got off the train in Cook long enough to be covered with flies. Glad that Portillo mentioned the magnificent sunsets of the Nullarbor. Like traveling on an ocean liner. Kalgoorlie hasn't changed much, but Perth is almost unrecognizable. It's three times as big as it was when we lived there.

Now THIS is beautifully done. Shows the land. Confirms that the host of this video has really done great research and all the filming is beautifully edited to result in a very interesting video. Thank you.

This is one of the most fascinating, informative and interesting videos I have seen in a long while..... I have learned much and have decided to, as much as possible, recreate this trip for myself. Thank you so very much, Michael Portillo..!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great clip on Kalgoorlie.
A great capture of the great city of Adelaide and one of her great vineyards.
This guys cool AF 😎
I know several people who rode the Rocky Mountaineer through the Canadian Rocky Mountains. They all said one thing...spectacular.

Beautifully done! Thanks for the educating and entertaining journey.

16:43 I thought his pyjamas would be brightly coloured like the rest of his wardrobe !
A classy traveler....
Love from Adelaide
You can take the train to Seaford and ride the old line through the wineries in the Vales, plenty of places to rest your head.
You'll enjoying yourseld sir!
This videos are interesting from different points of view but videos of Scott McGregor are 100% focused about Australian Railways.
Michael Portillo is much more likeable as a travel show presenter than as a politician.
A travel show presenter will always be good because his only job is present good show but a politician is engraved with myriad issues and our perspective depends on the reaction of the politician , Nevertheless
Micheal Portillo is Awesome with Words. :)
@@JOURNEYS7 It also depends on our political tastes and perspectives, but yeah. Either way, love this show and his others. Great British, Continental, Asian, American and Canadian, Alaskan, Australian, Indian, etc. Hope he makes one about South America and then we got shows with all the continents with railways on them. Personally tho, I'd like to see him do the railways of New Zealand and then he's covered all major parts of the former British Empire.
Surprisingly seems like a really cool dude 😂
This is a great series
Oh, I see; a Margaret Thatcher hater, are you ? Well, I think his politics are/were great...and Thatcher the greatest PM the UK ever had.
I am convinced; Michael Portillo *is* new to the Yabba. He's playing two-up now!
Or new David Attenborough
That was entertaining. I know very little about Australia.
Great Australia 🇦🇺🌹🌷🥀
Thank you very much for these videos...I was trying ti download It from raiplay buy I couldn't manager It...I'm fall in love with Australia...it's such a wonderful continente...😉🤗🤗
If there is a heaven on earth it is South Australia.

Hmm. Sydney was big with convict settlement early on..
Great stuff.
Krishna Ji Glad you enjoyed it . But a Subscribe from you will definitely motivate me for uploading Great Stuff.
@@JOURNEYS7 done. I remember he did a food tour of India too. I am a fan of Michael's spectacular dresses and hats.
@@bhattkris Well there are great indian railway Journeys 4 episodos . You can enjoy....🙏
This was a great video. My wife and I have been West twice. First time in 1993 by air...second time in 2000 we drove over and returned on the Indian pacific with our car on the back. You did not mention the Prospector train from Kalgoorlie to Perth.

Perth ❤
Nicely done Michael! As an Aussie, I've never been to Perth or WA so this was a nice way to check it out; although I wouldn't want to live there because in summer it gets too hot!,
Glad you enjoyed it!
Imagine losing regularly to a bunch of convicts in the Ashes and Rugby. The English must be cursing themselves for creating their Frankenstein. This rugged land really forged and honed a different set of species.
You’re sign in should be TREX
Yoah man can you put the Newcastle to Brisbane episode up as I really want too see it having missed out on it when it was on tv if you don’t mind thx
I am surprised they do not have DOME CARS on these great passenger trains
Very well presented video of my country A+;
But nearing the end something is going very wrong with the audio ...

'The wide, brown land for me!'
This fella loves a bright coloured blazer i tells ya
What is the tower in the background at the 17:17 mark? Regards from The States....what a lovely country Australia is!
@journeys , would you like the history of Melbourne transport
Gosh I would love to know where the black and white footage/photos came from at approx the 19 minute mark? Somewhere amongst the immigrants who helped build this railway was my grandfather. Any info would be really appreciated as a reply.
Fun Fact: The train manager, Deb, featured at 18:22 also did an episode for Chris Tarrant Extreme Railway Journeys...on The Ghan, from Adelaide to Port Augusta, if memory serves.
true
Wonderful journey.
How many days does it take?
How much is the dare?
Can’t wait to study in Adelaide after lockdown.
@journeys, can you do an episode of Melbourne Victoria, Australia, like tv series.
In Future .. If you don't mind hosting me :)
This best on T.V
LIKE #209. I really enjoyed this video. I love trains and all the history and information. Great content. It's too bad that the voice sync got off track. I would love to make this part of my visit in the future, if the income would enable me to do so. Thank you for sharing!
Heart #♥️. Thankyou hope you will share this to your friends . For more video related to Europe , America and United Kingdom . Check my Facebook Page..
Interesting. How much the trip cost now??? Tks.
Are these still being filmed??
Seems to still be an issue with the audio sync
This is a good example of why you should travel the regions when you go on holidays. Sydney and Melbourne aren't that much different to London or LA.
I love how animals runs these trains
Animals? What animals?
The audio needs to be re synched! neat film!
당연히 철은 잘 생산해야 합니다. 지금 시대가 철기시대입니다. 또 물질중 제일 안정적이라. 사용하여도 우리에게 해가 적어요.
When you were visiting australia did you get to see"helen reddy"🤔🤗😀😁😃😄☺🙂????!!!
Kitchen sink: Check
Audio sync: ERROR
SERIOUS audio sync error!
If you're looking for a planned city, go to Canberra.
The planning was much better.
Someone needs to pay closer attention to the sound & picture synchronization. 🙀😹
I took the train from Sydney to Perth in 1971 at a cost I could afford, not now, way out of my reach. Sad.
tell me about it ! That journey would cost £2-3,000 nowadays
So if one wants to avoid the convict heritage so prevalent in this land, the place to reside is South A., good to know.
The early convicts contributed to the building of the Australian character, which is even today is lacking in so-called "free settlements."
Clearly you have not been the posh suburbs of capital cities or Adelaide.
There is no lip sync!!!!
Olá mike
I would watch this program and laugh to myself that Portillo would never set foot on the Australind... well blow me down, he actually went on that smelly old klanker.🤦♂️😂
This guy sounds like someone from the 1950s.
Gay, with a stupid hat
He's actually from the 80s / 90s. He was a member of the Thatcher and Major Tory governments from that time. So while he may come across as quite a nice guy in these programmes, he's actually a scumbag. As are all Tories. Never trust a Tory!
grahamlive I wouldn’t trust a politician of any stripe but especially those on the left who are for big government, globalism, and controlling people’s lives.
운반수단입니다.
British english vs Aussie English. 😃
I wish 1 day no't very far i would be in milborne
My only criticism is ths: too many side-trips to places and things that are included more for variety than relevance. E.g.: the tango segment
Baskerville22 And... (19:37) bring on the camels when you need them and kill them in mass when they start being a problem!
Who was in charge of regulating their population between WWI and the latest huge fire ?
Colonel Light's design to a flirtatious tango instructor?!
I'm turning off now.
@MichaelKingsfordGray Because of the mindless responses from trolls like you
There's something wrong with the audio timing it's like watching an old kung fu movie what their lips are moving and the voice don't match
I agree with this comment concerning the audio being way out of sync and it made it a bit hard to watch. Nice to see that Mr Portillo taking some train rides in Australia
@@rossjasper1595 very much so screwed up audio cool last name I've got some Jasper Stones myself very awesome semi-precious gym
Don't look at their lips
Because I’m partially deaf, I have the sub-titles on & they are in sync with the sound.
Excellent!
It puzzles me that Portillo's Indian Pacific trip was only half the journey, why did it not start in Sydney? And in McLaren Vale? FA to do with rail travel, and not much to do with quality wine either.
Maybe that was why. They couldn't secure sales.
this is episode 3
because he likes his plonk
The railway wasn't a continuous until 1992. In the 1940s train, Adelaide to Perth had three gauge changes. Michael's following the 1911 tour guide.
It did start in Sydney. You’ve missed the first 2 episodes.
because anyone can be Australian anything can be Australian
I'll 2nd that...halfway through the audio and video are out of synch!!
Just look out for Australian Journeys playlist here : facebook.com/sinha47
"anglo-saxon money"
The sound does not sync with people talking.
