Coyotito’s life in a nutshell 1. Born 2. Bit by scorpion 3. Gets sick by cocaine 4. Falls off swinging box 5. Home is burned down 6. Forced to leave home 7. Gets shot
@@mrbluesky5995 I actually really liked it. Horribly sad ending, though. Just hearing that the baby got shot in the head doesnt give the full effect of how sad that last chapter was. It’s the way you don’t really find out until the last bit, the buildup, that makes it so sad
Man I wish I had this when I was growing up. The Pearl was a part of my summer reading list which I would be tested on when school started back. Needless to say I did not read the book. Test failed. Also that summer we had to read The Outsiders (which I loved) and another book which title escapes me that I also didn't read. Best off luck students. Although this is an amazing resource let me remind you nothing takes the place of actually reading the book and discovering the lessons and how the book makes you feel for yourselves. Happy reading :)
@Andi Meow I've never heard of text-to-text connection before, but after looking it up, it's an interesting concept. I would say that a good text connection to this story would be the parable in the Bible about the man who discovers a pearl or jewel in a field and sells everything to buy the field. Btw, I can't reply directly to your comment since it's not enabled.
The baby received medical attention from his mother; he did not need medical attention. It was perceived that the baby needed colonial medical attention - that it was better. Moving from the cultural beliefs of their heritage toward the cultural beliefs of the colonizers, the protagonists lose everything.
I’m not sure that sucking poison from a scorpion sting (or snake bite) is the best example of wonderful native medical attention. It has been shown to NOT work. (Although I would try it if not near one of those crazy white mans medical clinics). But feel free to run down to a he jungles of Brazil for some voodoo instead of something like a hospital when you are seriously sick if you want.
JoshTheNerd what do you think average lifespan has done? Although I would probably agree with you that it can be overdone on vaccines, antibiotics, etc. but I would stick with my opinion and recommend anyone bitten by a venomous snake go to a western hospital and not just suck it out as that doesn’t work.
@@jerryyoung6494 I think they are talking about Juana putting the plants from the sea onto the wound, not the sucking poison. The author said something about how they used that plant for a lot of medical things, but Juana was worried it wouldn’t work now because it didn’t have the doctor behind it. Basically saying that, because the doctor didn’t put the leaves on the baby, it wouldn’t work. I believe there was also a point about the doctors medical attention costing money, which made it better too. The author definitely hinted at the fact that the doctors medicine wasn’t better than her medicine, furthered by the fact that that doctor seemed to have poisoned the baby to make it seem like he healed him, when it fact it was most likely Juanas medicine that healed him. They aren’t saying in real life it would work, they’re saying in the _book_ it worked. Edit: typos
Not completely like the book. Kino never doubted the pearl's worth until Coyotito dies. Also, you left out the part where Kino hurts Juana. Good, but also forgot some important stuff. The book was probably the best book I've read after Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. And it is pronounced Wanna, not you-wanna. And Coyotito is pronounced Coyote-to. Good job tho.
Yeah same thing im saying, he left out alot of important parts, and the doctor didnt only chose not to help them because they were poor it was because of their race as well. He still didnt do a bad job tho
The pronunciation of ''Juana'' is like if it was with "H" jajaj I knew something was weird with the name... Anyway thank you, you have helped me with an exam...
Full summary: This is a story about a man named Kino, a poor pearl diver. Who lives with his wife Juana and their newborn Coyotito. One night a scorpion sting Coyotito as he is sleeping, and despite Juana’s efforts to suck out the poison, the baby screams and needs medical attention. Kino and his family walk to the nearest doctor to request aid, but the doctor refuses to help them, because they are poor. So to help pay for the doctors services Kino goes pearl diving, and he hopes to find a pearl that will get him the money that he needs. As he dives he sees a large oyster, and he brings it back to his boat. As he opens it, he discovers a very large pearl, he names this pearl “The Pearl Of The World”. The whole village celebrates Kino’s find. But he quickly become paranoid, and suspicious of his nabougers. That same night he fights of thiefs, who try to steal the pearl, which he buried in the ground. the next day Kino walks in to town, to sell the pearl, the whole village follows him. By this time, the pearl buys, have heard of the great pearl. So when Kino comes to them, they try to lowball him, saying that the pearl is so big that nobody will want to buy it. Kino doubts the worth of the pearl, but he decides to try to sell it at the capital himself. That evening Juana tries to get rid of the pearl by throwing it in the ocean. But Kino stop her by grabbing her arm, as she is just about to throw it. He punches her in the face, and kicks her as she is laying in the sand. However there is a mysterious attacker who tries to steal the pearl, and in the struggle Kino kills him. Returning to the village, they find their home ransacked and burning. Panicking, Kino decides, that they must quickly go the capital. They go though the mountains, but realise that they are being followed by three men, two walking, and one on horseback with a gun. Realising the men will eventually catch up to them, Kino decides that he must will them. He sneaks up on them but they hear Coyotito crying in the distance. the man with the gun fires a shot in the direction of the crying. Kino takes this opportunity to attack the men, he kills them all. In the end Kino and Juana returns to the village, with a dead Coyotito who suffered a gunshot to the head. And they throw the pearl back into the ocean.
Does anyone know an example of kinos bravery in the pearl I'm desperate the only one I have is him rejecting the pearl buyers prices and going to the capital
Thank you for helping i read the book but its a bit blurry to understand and i watched the movie to but this summarizes everything in just 3 minutes. By the way i needed to read the book for my book report for english. Thanks for the help
I’m sure this is helpful for other reasons, but I know a lot of people are watching this instead of reading the book. If you’re doing that (and I know sometimes you just have to do that, getting time to read is difficult), I suggest reading the summaries for each chapter too. Just hearing the summary for the whole book would never help me pass tests and stuff, all my tests would have questions on specific details like when the songs were heard, what the doctors attitude was like, etc. Just make sure you get a bit more detail in
Wow! so helpful summary, really it's amazing, especially for me, because I'm gonna to have Exam in this novella, in Four coming hours! Really I apreciate it.
Beth, I think you should try to read it. I just finished it, as did my 7th grade daughter. It was a fast read and we both enjoyed it! Next, we are going to read Of Mice and Men! Good Luck!
