  • Fairbanks, Alaska - This time-lapse video shows the entire day (3 hours and 49 minutes) in two minutes. It was shot one week after the actual Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year in Earth's Northern Hemisphere on December 21). Only 100 miles from the Arctic Circle, this video looks south at the Alaska Mountain Range and shows sunrise through sunset. The video includes pre-dawn (one-half hour before sunrise) and dusk (one-half hour after sunset). Copyright Eric Muehling 2009. All rights reserved. Available in high-definition. Original frames were shot in 10-second intervals with a Canon D30 SLR (raw format).

      Personally, I would redo the audio, maybe using the second or else the final movement from Holst's "The Planets," or perhaps Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. Nevertheless, like the rest of you, I didn't care that much about the audio. Being a musician, adding audio is something I would have done simply as a matter of course.

    I went to Fairbanks in Aug 08. I stood outside the Westmark hotel and said "I must see this place in winter." This past winter I did just that. It was -30, gorgeous! (Also went to Anchorage and Kotzebue same trip.) Alaska in summer is beautiful, but Alaska in winter is spectacular. I will come back again.... in winter...I watch this video a lot, it calms my soul.

    Thank you for demonstrating the earth as a rotating globe! Flat Earther's maintain that an Arctic midnight sun is indisputable proof of a flat earth, but they will ignore videos like this that suggest the tilt of the North pole away from the sun. A 3 hour, 49 minute long day with the sun that low in the sky demonstrates that the south pole would be continuously lit and must be experiencing very long days, and as the Earth rotates it will plunge much of the Arctic circle into rough 20 hour nights.

    • @thephaneron3676
      @thephaneron3676 7 лет назад +5

      *+djmiamamma* Lmao no it doesn't. If earth was flat the sun could sink no lower than 12.9 degrees above the horizon at it's lowest point, and in the Arctic circle it could never sink lower than a whopping 28.7 degrees below the horizon at it's lowest point. It would be midnight sun everywhere, all the time!

    • @Wrkumlin
      @Wrkumlin 6 лет назад +2

      Tarek EL Derbas Shill? Really? Based on your FE with the sun circling above the equator, he’s right. The sun, from there in Alaska, would never drop below around 25-30 degrees above the horizon. This video shows it visible for only 4 hours a day at this time of year. And then its visible for 20 hours a day 6 months later. Please explain to me how both of those can happen at the same time if the earth is flat. And perspective can’t make the sun drop below the horizon and come back up on the other side of the planet.

    • @bhaggen
      @bhaggen 5 лет назад +1

      A 3 hour, 49 minute long day in the North only means that if there's a 3 hour, 49 minute long night at the same time & latitude S, and the Sun appears to traverse in the opposite direction, we are on some sort of spheroid.

      Obviously. Just because there’s the winter darkness, it doesn’t mean that you just stay home all day. You also go outside in the dark too, and that goes for pretty much anywhere and not just Fairbanks, AK. I live in NY and I have to ride my bike in the dark if it’s later into the afternoon in early December (and just around then in general because the sunsets at 16:27, Civil Dusk is at 16:57, Nautical Dusk is at 17:31, and Astronomical Dusk is at 18:05, so it’s already dark out by the 17:20s, and I don’t let it stop me from going outside.

I seen it on youtube and i can honestly say it is pretty freaky... but its also beautiful. The sun barely reached the horizon, but it was pretty. You should go to Alaska in the summer if this will drive you crazy. In the summer, the sun sets at 9pm! And the sunrises like at 5 6 or 7? It's a big difference. I went to Alaska in the summer and I was like what time is it? I was like omigosh! its 9 and the sun is still up. I really loved that.

    Thanks for the video Eric. Curious to know. How do people cope with a 60+ day in Burbank i.e. school, work, sports, social activities, etc, or is Alaska more like a tourism town? Is there a reason why it is mainly dark in Alaska compared to the rest of the world?

    • @nabranestwistypuzzler7019
      @nabranestwistypuzzler7019 3 года назад

      It’s mainly light in Alaska compared to the rest of the world because the shallow arc of the sun moving in the sky makes it take longer for the sun to finish going below the horizon, plus twilight lasts a lot longer. However, it’s just that it’s darker in the winter, but the amount of extra daylight above 12 hours in the summer compared to below 12 in the winter is more, plus the equinoxes have something above 12:12 or sm instead of 12:06 like the equator, and then twilight lasts longer ofc especially around the solstices and even way more so in the summer to the point that there is hardly even Civil Twilight.
      Also, the camera does make it look darker because the sky looks mid blue in the darkest parts right as it sets in this video, but irl, that doesn’t happen until after Civil Dusk at the beginning of Nautical Twilight.

      Also, there’s more light on average all year round the further away from the equator that you go, but it’s just that the amount of time that the geometric center of the sun spends at above 0.00° is equal to how long it’s below 0.00° for.

      Edgars Cirulis Actually, sometimes it does. The sun it's self does not actually rise above the horizon; however, refractory rays of light can be bent and come over the horizon, giving the impression that the sun has risen. This happened one year in Kugaaruk, Nunavut, Canada, creating the impression that the sun had risen a week before it was expected to. People were quite puzzled.

      It’s very similar, but not exactly the same because this is the 28th.

    The Sun "goes" in elevation only a little more of a degree per hour . In a medium or medium law latitude goes minimum 7-8 degrees per hour

    @palefacealaskan. I did this video for fun! It was a personal project made with my own equipment. I have good notes on how to do this, if you're interested. Definitely not work-related. Thanks for the "georgeous" comment!

    Maybe it's little less than 2 degrees above the orizon because of the latitude
