Honest, straight forward, and knowledgeable. Thank you! I've ridden my 2003 KLR 650 across Canada a couple times plus many other adventures and this is all really good advice. Subscribed!
There's not enough average bike, 400cc, 500cc, this the best size for me, and for everyone! Not too heavy for trails, and completely comfortable at 90 or 100km/H on the road. DRZ400 or CBX 500 are such a good size!
Just up graded a new Cheap as Chips Honda CB500X with a Rally Raid Level 3 upgrade. Has transformed the bike on road and off road. Testing it out on a trip from London to Helsinki next week in preparation for another trip from London to the Sahara (my 16 year old BMW R1200C Cruiser needs a rest). I was going to buy an Africa Twin, amazing bike off road, driven one on forest tracks in Wales. But really too heavy for me when fully loaded and riding on my own.
The best remark ever!!! You have to like it yourself. The best advice ever! I am a Guzzi person myself. That means that I like it, it counts for me! Who am I to tell somebody else what bike he/she have to ride. Thank you!
really good review ! .. i do have a Yamaha XTZ125 2015 and i ride all around Dominican Republic and Haïti. it's nothing powerfull or confortable but it get you everywhere. no need to look for the ultimate machine to enjoy an adventure!! ... just ride :)
This is one of the best if not the best motorcycle video and advice I have seen. Honest and informative without the hype and BS about one brand or the other.👍
I agree with what you said man. I've had 232kg bike before and I was afraid of it it was useless in offroad. Now I have 189kg one and Im much happier but planning long year trip and looking for lighter bike again. Not more than 150kg. Its like you said every bike is good as long as it suits yourself!
don't get it: rally raid cb500x wet weight is about 221 kg compared to the 238 kilos of liquid-cooled GS. Not such a big difference if u ask me. And the powerhouse difference is really huge. I've been riding the casual CB500X with all the luggage stuffed and a passenger, it doesn't have enough power sometimes on highways, and the shifts are very short, so u need to work with the clutch constantly. Moreover, the seat for the passenger is awfull, my gf was very angry after like 300-400 km per day.
ive got Yamaha SZ-r 150 and we travel a lot..one of the most important thing to do if you plan to travel is to have a background on the roads that you will be travelling so that you know what to bring and to expect..very nice video again..thank you..
I have a V-Strom 650 and I think it is pretty good for adventure riding too. The bike is my father's, and we cover can cover good 2 countries with no issues.
Motorcycle Adventures Живея в Стара Загора и се казвам Станислав. Ако се връщате в България и имате свободно време може да се видим ако се сетите за мен. Ще се радвам да се запознаем. I live in Stara Zagora and my name is Stanislav. If you come back to Bulgaria more often and have free time, we can meet somewhere if it come to mind at you. It would be nice for me to meet you.
KLR 650 best ADV bike over all. Best bang for the buck. will do everything but nothing good. Cheap and simple and super reliable, can be fixed with simple tools anywhere in the world.
9:17 In addition to a large, well padded seat, a seat cushion will give you a few more hours riding time before needing to pull over for a rest. I use the AirHawk R seat cushion. I never ride without it. A tad pricey ($200 CND), but well worth it. A must for the long-haul rider... ✔
Greetings from Philippines! I've been riding offroad for some years already, mostly trails, single track dirtbikes. But lately I have been looking into adventure riding. I have planned on taking a 500km ride this June and I thought this will be a challenge since I'm only used to dirtbikes on single tracks. Then I watched channels like yours and learned that 500km is nothing in adventure rides. haha. I have watched all your videos and like them. Very honest and practical advice. My bikes, I have 3, are nowhere near the level in any of the bikes I see in adv channels. But I'll try to learn and go with my bike at my own pace. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Dan, you are very welcome again. Remember, the most important is to ride, no matter with what. The bike will not make the Adventure, you have to make it. Ride safe!
I was talking to a guy who had 6 bikes to choose from and he told me he preferred Ducati Scrambler 800 above all for tours - very stable, agile and good torque. Downside could be range, around 200+ km only.
Many moons ago (1980’s) friends did a motorcycle tour of India. Just bought a couple of Royal Enfield Bullet 500’s when they got there. Good for the local conditions, easy to fix, and if you couldn’t fix it there would be a local who could, and no problems getting parts either. Another possibility for people to consider - leave your bike at home and have your adventure on a local machine.
Thanks for the great advice. Am wanting to get the best bike I can after 22 years without and that wish to get the absolute right one is a bit of a headache, so your points here are much appreciated.
Again...spot on. I have first put on 20k on a KLR, then 25k on a Tiger Explorer XC, Now have shot down the middle and settled on a Tiger 800 XCa. I ride 50/50 tarmac to gravel/dirt. Living in the middle of the states, I have to ride 600 miles to get to any good roads it seems. The 800 is lighter than the 1200 and has all the power I need. Cruise control is nice for those 600 miles also. My area BMW dealer is arrogant, my T dealer is the best. All makes make good bikes. The KLR is still the most fixable and more than likely reliable bike made. It's a tractor...but feels like one also.
I agree sir... You're right about compromises because no single motorcycle is perfect for a type of ride. My ride went well because of two simple modifications: 1. I change tires, from roadster type to a heavily spiked tires and to compensate this, 2. I went low gear settings, therefore significantly reduced my top speed but on 45 degree unpaved uphill, climb, my 115 cc scooter out-manoeuvred the bigger 250 cc sports bike. Two sports bike actually malfunctioned during that climb. Yes sir, your motorcycle review is not only timely but also practical. Keep up the good works and ride safe... Greetings from the Philippines...
Great video. As I rode my triumph 800 only on road I changed to the 1200 explorer XC(luxury problem) but then I got caught by de light off road riding and took a course off road. What a heavy bike to grab from the ground (I'm 172 cm 80kg) 4 times in the afternoon. But a great bike to ride. Luckily the wife lets me to have a second bike. And seeing al the videos I bought a 2007 Yamaha XT660R (again a luxury problem) and hopefully I have great fun on that. Thanks for the tips an keep up the good work, it's appreciated 😀
I own a KTM 1190 R. It is big, but with the right crash crash bars it gets easier to pick it up, like the BMW 1200GS. It is great for lots of lugguage, speed and off road sections, but tire life is an issue. So a 50/50 compromise tire is needed. It is also very difficult to service, the fuel tank (23lt) needs to come off if you need to access the air box. And the seat is tolerable for 2 hours... My old KLR650 could do everything it can, just slower. Honestly if I were to go offroad into unknown countries for extended periods, I would opt for a single cylinder with a carburetor. Anyone can fix that. As always your videos give me something to think about. Please continue making these.
I love this bike. Light, powerful and it has great suspension. Actually before I bought my Tenere, I was think to take KTM 690. The price was about the same, but I have to add many additional thinks, like petrol tank, better seat, windscreen or maybe the hall fairing. Also I need to find a solution with sub frame, that's why I choose Yamaha. I think that I made the right choice, but I still miss that beast! Thank you for watching!
I’ve just bought a low mileage XT660R, my choice was base on price mainly. I looked at many other bikes and this had only 6000 miles and was fully loaded for adventure riding. It’s a 2007 that’s like new, yes to many it may be heavy but only cost £3k so the money I e save will pay for my next trip.
BMW GS 650 F - I find is the most comfortable bike, both for on road and for off road. I have had it since new (2004) It has 94 000 km on the clock - I have ridden from Richards Bay (east coast of South Africa) to the Epua Falls in Namibia. And to Mt Kilimanjaro. its not the fastest bike but hey I have seen a lot. I am 82 kg 6 foot tall - OH, AND I ONLY HAVE ONE ARM.
The best adventure bike is the one we have in the garage! Congratulations for your trip! Most of the people in your situation will not even think about motorcycle. Good luck on the future adventures!
As I said at the beginning, you can do it with any bike. How long trips? If you have plans to ride between 30-50,000kms per year, the engine will finish in two years time. On the other hand, light, economy, nice suspension, it is great bike. It's all depend from that question I asked - how long trips?
Motorcycle Adventures way less than those kilometers. I would not commute on it. But im plan it to take it from London all the way to the east coat, Asia. Your video perfectly describe what sort of bike do I need, Im just asking your personal opinion.
I think that you will be very happy once you get to Asia. On the highways in Europe, with this small engine you going to have a hard time, but it's all the matter of compromises. On the other hand the highlights in your journey are in Asia and yes, I think that your choice is right.
I looked at ergonomic site you posted. XF650 freewind looks very cosey. Is that a good bike. I am your size. Great, informative, well presented, honest and captivating videos. I'm a begginer, considering a bike for commuting. Freewind, Varadero125, or your favorite😊 Keep on ! Thanks! Greetings from Subotica, Serbia
You may want to re think the ktm 500 in terms of engine life, a New Zealand guy rode his bike from South America to Alaska and did 50000km or so with out touching the top end , so if you use quality oils these bikes have a lot of potential for adventure riding.
If you really want an adventure bike that fits the country your in, copy what the locals use. The locals will know how to fix it and parts will be readily available. The problem with Adventure bikes in the West, they are marketed to western egos which ultimately creates the wrong adventure bike.
Travelingman 1997 man you are so right! They will go buy the biggest BMW or KTM they can afford two or three towns from where they live because there's not a dealership near them! Duh! Where you gonna get it worked on or serviced. I am looking into a suzuki vstrom. Cheap reliable parts readily available and a dealer or two in any fair size city. I ain't riding it to Africa just 400 or 500 miles on an adventure!
c'mon guys, nobody says anything about F650GS (preferable Dakar) and I wonder why. Its a great adventure bike, it takes you to the end of the world and back, economical, light and still has fair off-road capabilities for its class. This is the one I would take with me to Ulan Bator at this moment.
Would I be right in suggesting an older bike with minimum electronics in case of breakdown. I loved my 1995 Africa Twin.. P.S Just found your channel, awesome..
grizzlysilverback I agree. I own a 2002 XRV 750 Africa. It has everything you need. You can fix It anywhere (in the rare case It breaks down). Cheap, reliable and beatiful. If you want New gadgets you can adapt them but not sure If you need them.
Please try to slow down your speech and try to wear your microphone. If you get too far away from the camera the sound is distorted for us guys who might have some hearing issues. Clarity counts.
Hi really appreciate the amount of info you share for all of us Riders. Can you tell something about new BMW G310R (no need of kidneys). I am planning to upgrade from current Suzuki GS150R
It's a new model of BMW (launched in 2016) and I know nothing about it. It is a a 300cc single cylinder with 34 h.p, should be good. I haven't seen it. Sorry!
Motorcycle Adventures I am really considering that bike too... After selling my 2017 Ducati Panigale, and deciding on a better, NOT so expensive, more comfortable cruising bike... I am towards the BMW GS310, since it's light, efficient, off-road friendly and relatively inexpensive...
Fantastic. I could not find someone share thier long motorbike jurney expirnces, and especially what we need to consider when we travel outside of Europe, let's say to Asia or Africa! In term of law and regulation ? For example is all motorbike allowed? Or do we need special driving licen and registration ...etc. ! Would you please share your experiences from one of your long trip.? How it was ? What we need to consider ? Thank you for the other videos
Motorcycle Adventures... thanx a lot .. I have found it ... Thank u . Is there any place where cumunities or experience people like yourself meet, we would like to keep in Dutch . .. I love travel , and my dream is to do one very long trip before getting old .... as u said life is very short .. ... See u on the go.
Great Video.. 😊😘😎 I need your opinion for taking an Indian cruiser bike... Like BAJAJ AVENGER CRUISE 220... Is this suitable for long journeys in most of the terrain??
gokul krishnan.s long rides are fine about 300-400 kms a day, but only on tarmac.. forget off-roads on a longish trip you'll be crying after 50kms on bad roads.. It's a good value for money cruiser..
There are 2 way to look at GSs 1200. Yes they are heavy on off road sections. But on road sections and bad road sections they just eat kilometers and demand for more. Suspension is genius on those bikes, dont feel bad road at all. And it is one of the premier choices if you travelling with a wife, she can sleep at 140km/h! So its a performance powerhouse on easier parts of journey. GSs are particulary popular in Western Russia because you have to cross like 1.5k just before you even get to the good parts and you know those roads like really well. You just want to skip it. Nevertheless, as those were experiences of my constant riding buddy - im more inclined to something lighter - like New Africa. Another way to look at it - bike must handle well on hardest part of journey and be ok on easier.
Hi, i own a 2018 ktm 390 duke. It is a small bike. And i was thinking of going on a trip with it? 1 weeke maybe 2. What is your opinion of this idea? And everyones opinion? Thanks in advance!
Hi, both are totally different bikes. First is very light, bullet proof machine, but very slow and vibrates a lot. Second is perfect motorcycle for long trips, but too big for off-road and too expensive. It's all depends from your tip of riding: Where? How many km per day? On or off road? Alone or with pylon? How tall and heavy are you and many more. When you answer these questions you will have the answer. Thank you for watching!
Hello , I am from india. You guys are really fantastic. You done a great job. Thanks a lot to make this kind of videos. My buddy told me about your channel & then I start to watch your videos. You give us nice hints and tips which is very valuable for us. Well , and another thing is I am also seriously thinking about to start motorcycle adventure.I will start my tour from next year, I am wondering to buy a triumph tiger 800 xca for me . I am 5' 10" high and my weight is 85 kg , what would you suggest? Is this motorbike good for me. ? I have a younger brother, he is as same as like me and he want bony t120 . what would you suggest ? please reply...!!!
Hi Chetan and thank you for watching! I will suggest to start with lighter and cheaper bike. Something like 400 or max 650, no more than 150-160kg. Once you gain some experience you can change it. It is just opinion, you don't need to lessen. Don't forget, rode safe!
Hi Steve, yes, I do have plans to make few reviews - clothes, saddle bags. tires and many more, but I am waiting for better weather. Thank you for watching!
Hello MA Very helpful information, I m a beginner in biking & I dnt hv enough budget to go with bigger specifications & brand. I love to buy BMW G310GS..😍😍 Hw is it..? & It has capabilities to hold off & on road or durt I love to bike which has go anywhere capability
bello mate, tour videos are amazing. i dediced To switch My Street bike intorno a ne adventure bike . i really love ktm 1090. i ma 180 cm tall And 100 weight... more or Less lire u are. .. is that a Good choice according To your rewiev? thanks for y. advice.😉 Luca
They are own by KTM now, so basically they are the same. I had Husqvarna, before, but it was from the old Italian factory TE 510. Any way it was trouble free bike. I use to ride off road with many KTM friends and I was the only guy with no problems.
If you want to learn more about the long motorcycle trips check the rest of the videos in the channel or by my book: "How to become a better long distance motorcycle rider" rtw-adventures.com/books-1.html
Motorcycle Adventures - I've had 4 BMW's, great bikes no arguement, but their electronics has drained my pocket a lot 😤
Honest, straight forward, and knowledgeable. Thank you! I've ridden my 2003 KLR 650 across Canada a couple times plus many other adventures and this is all really good advice. Subscribed!
KLR is well know and bullet proof machine. Ride safe and thank you for watching!
There's not enough average bike, 400cc, 500cc, this the best size for me, and for everyone! Not too heavy for trails, and completely comfortable at 90 or 100km/H on the road. DRZ400 or CBX 500 are such a good size!
I've found that sometimes what we think we want is not always what we know we want. Thanks for the good advice.
I love this guy. I wish I could count him as a personal friend. I would love to go on rides with him.
Make sure you have a good light. It may save your life. Great advice many thanks.

Thank you. BMW F 850 GS
Cool!
850 GSA
Everyone I know has a big bagger Harley. I ride a BMW F650GS. It's light weight and fun to ride. F' em if they don't like it, I bought it for me. :)
Exactly. It is your bike...

Rally Raid Honda CB500X. Light, agile, balanced, sufficient power, comfortable. I had a 1200 and I hated it off road: like riding and elephant.
John Swanson I agree completly! To me that is the Best bike in the market today. It has all the pros that he says on the video.

Another useful video from Pavlin. The issue is, I have so many things to think again...
Again wonderful video! Congratulations!
Indeed, must carefully select our motorcycles for pleasure in journeys!
Correct! It will be your riding friend for many kms. Ride safe!
I did my first off road adventure with a Yamaha Vega 115cc scooter and it went great!

Great video and some very good tips on bike selection!
thanks a lot for taking the time for making this, it's very helpful
I can confirm the seat part, it's just like you said
Ooou, the seat, yes, it is. Thank you for watching and ride safe!
250cc scooter shood be enoght for first time on 2 whells for trip from city to city?
Any bike is fine for this, but for new rider the best option is light and cheaper motorcycle. When you gain some skills you can change it.

Great presentation again Pavlin.

Thanks for the thoughtful videos. You rock!!

when are you coming to South Africa to ride. if you do ever come please contact me. be well
Thanks Daniel! Drop me an e-mail to have your details: rtw-adventures.com/contacts-1.html
Great great videos! Thank you very much! Ciao from Italy!
Thank you very much for watching!
I totally agree with you, basing on my personal experience.
Thanks man!
Good content. Question. What do you think about the honda crf250l or the upcoming rally? For long trips.
On the other hand the highlights in your journey are in Asia and yes, I think that your choice is right.
thanks for sharing this. I am from Higganum Connecticut USA
My Favorites: KLR650, Vstrom 650, or (sell kidney) Africa Twin!
how about EFI vs Carburetor? what do you think? great videos my friend. best quality channel on youtube! ride safe!
I think that the modern EFI are much more effective and I never heard about injection problems. Defect fuel pump yes, but EFI, never.
Hi man! Nice videos, how about a review of the dr650? Also, if you are from the USA where should you buy your bike for a Silk Road trip?
Lightweight, affordable, good shocks = dirt bike. So I use a small XR200. Anyway most of my long trips max = 800kms only every 3yrs. ( I'm 73) .
Good choice for the type of riding you have. Enjoy your trips!
Hi, my friend ride XF 650 Freewind. It is very good bike for adventure riding. It's a bit low for me. Thanks for watching!
Great videos, thanx for the info and advice..
Thank you for watching!
Have you conciderd the RE Himylayan Euro4?
You may want to re think the ktm 500 in terms of engine life, a New Zealand guy rode his bike from South America to Alaska and did 50000km or so with out touching the top end , so if you use quality oils these bikes have a lot of potential for adventure riding.
Yes, I understand that, but 50,000km are two max 3 long trips. Even if you make one per year, you have to change the bike every three years.
Motorcycle Adventures , you don't have to change bike just do a new top end on it 👍
Yes.. everything back to your budget...
Very nice and instructive.
Thank you,
That was an usefull advice .
I love my gold wing with knobies
Perfect explanation
Thank you for watching!
c'mon guys, nobody says anything about F650GS (preferable Dakar) and I wonder why. Its a great adventure bike, it takes you to the end of the world and back, economical, light and still has fair off-road capabilities for its class. This is the one I would take with me to Ulan Bator at this moment.
You are right, I really forget about that bike. It is one of the best ever. Thank you for watching!
parts availability in case they break down chain belts etc.
Royal Enfield Himalayan or KTM adventure 390. Which one do you suggest.? Kindly reply.
Would I be right in suggesting an older bike with minimum electronics in case of breakdown. I loved my 1995 Africa Twin.. P.S Just found your channel, awesome..
My opinion is the same, but we are 2017 and most of the people love new gadgets.
grizzlysilverback I agree.
CRF250L,XT660Z,DL650XT,CRF1000L, it's my choice of bikes
Model that covers all your points: used KTM LC4 640 Adventure or used/new LC4 690 Basel conversion (if you are tall enough)
if not: Yamaha Ténéré
and if you want nothing of the points mentioned above: Enfield Bullet or Simson Schwalbe !
Very good bikes, but I prefer my Yamaha. More reliable I think. Thank you for watching!
I love the maintence part so many blogs miss this godda do this stuff out in the boonies KISS
Im very happy of your videos i learned a lot of things i hope i can own one of your second hand helmet as my souvenier
Happy to hear that!
Also can u please share the name and model of your motorbike ? Tjanx
My bike is Yamaha XT 660 Z. Check the rest of the videos in the channel and you will find all the answers you need.
I need your opinion for taking an Indian cruiser bike...
KLR anywhere
Correct, the GS is a great bike for the purpose it's made. Thank you for watching!
BMW axle tramp due to rear drive is the pits and unfixable. Hates potholes.
True said, thanks brother.
Any time!
Hi, i own a 2018 ktm 390 duke. It is a small bike. And i was thinking of going on a trip with it? 1 weeke maybe 2. What is your opinion of this idea? And everyones opinion? Thanks in advance!
Thanks, useful information.
You are welcome!
Does liquid cooling have a remarkable difference than air cooling for long adventures?
Hi, do you mind to share a bit more about klr650 & BMW GS Adventure 1200. Because I'm still wondering which to choose. Thank you so much
Hi, both are totally different bikes. Thank you for watching!
thanks for shearing your knowlidge
Thank you for watching!
Motorcycle Adventures very honest reviews i ride 800xc from past 3 years and i very much second you. Stay blessed 👍
You are very good 😊, but what about royal Enfield Himalayan?
They are very well known and many times proofed motorcycles.
Most popular traveling bikes in Russia (huge country as you may know )) is Suzuki Djebel 250, Yamaha TTR250 Raid, Honda XR250...
thanks Sasha.
I realy like bmw gs 310 for my first bike. What do you guys think about? Do you have any sugestions?
It doesn't mean what we think, it will be your bike.
BMW has a 40% failure rate. Try a Suzuki DRZ 400 or even better DRZ 400SM.
Interesting stuff as ever!.....you mentioned tyres, are you going to do a tyre review sometime. .? Steve
Hi Steve, yes, I do have plans to make few reviews - clothes, saddle bags. tires and many more, but I am waiting for better weather. Thank you for watching!

Weight is the enemy! My best bet is a robust, simple, agile, single cylinder!
What is your opinion regarding an ABS-system for you kind of journeys?
I have a video about it. Just watch it.
What about tracer 700 as an adventure bike, what do you think?
Not good for OffRoad i know but what if im interested in roads only
I haven't test it, but I have heard a lot of good things about it. As I said many times, the bike is just a tool, the travel is what really matters!
Hey Man.
Just take a look on Mahindra MOJO.
Its a Indian motorcycle and I think sold in INDIA only. Still Have a look

Very good machine, proven in many adventures around the world.

Luca Locatelli yes, 1090 is great bike. Ride safe!
i want to ask you your opinion about husqvarna bikes
i like nuda 900 r and they sell around 7000 -9000 euro.
thank you
They are own by KTM now, so basically they are the same. I had Husqvarna, before, but it was from the old Italian factory TE 510. Any way it was trouble free bike. I use to ride off road with many KTM friends and I was the only guy with no problems.
Isn't Honda Africa Twin 1000 too heavy for offroad traveling as well?
Moonwalker0476 No.
