Brown haired rugged folk who literally have a wall across their country to defend from the ginger haired wildlings on the other side in Scotland. Plus the history of invasion and war with the ice people of Norway. And, y'know, the fact that it's in the North. Greyjoys are the rocky islands of Ireland, off to the West. Also, if you're worried about hair colour, the Lannisters can't be Italy! Germany is a much better fit overall.
Sure, my second option for the Starks and the North in general would be a Scandinavian country, or a mix of them, just based on geography. Much better than Romania to me. And Greyjoy would be my second choice for the UK, as seafaring island, like you say. I guess the island thing doesn't feel like such a big deal to me anymore since its now quicker to get a train from London to Paris than to most other cities in the UK. Though leaving the EU can be interpreted different ways of course... no one in the UK agrees, certainly...! I think part of my bias is really because the English War of the Roses is such a big influence on the story, and so many of the character names and actors, especially in the Northlands below the wall, are so British sounding. Anyway, it's all just fun :) There's no right answer!

Sure, my second option for the Starks and the North in general would be a Scandinavian country, or a mix of them, just based on geography. Much better than Romania to me. And Greyjoy would be my second choice for the UK, as seafaring island, like you say.
I guess the island thing doesn't feel like such a big deal to me anymore since its now quicker to get a train from London to Paris than to most other cities in the UK. Though leaving the EU can be interpreted different ways of course... no one in the UK agrees, certainly...!
I think part of my bias is really because the English War of the Roses is such a big influence on the story, and so many of the character names and actors, especially in the Northlands below the wall, are so British sounding.
Anyway, it's all just fun :) There's no right answer!
