    When I hear that climax where they are all singing "arabian nights" very loudly, I wanna join in so badly. Being allowed to freely put all my passion into my voice has always been the best thing to me in choir.

    I've seen a lot of shows on Broadway, but this was, by far, the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. From the first note until the last - the singing, the dancing, the instrumentalists - everything is brilliant!

    Instantly fell in love with this Genie, which was so unexpected considering how much I adored Robin Williams. You know it's a great show when you just start smiling a little into the opening number and it just transports you into full on happiness. Amazing performance all around!

    In 6th grade I went to see Aladdin as a chorus trip and the genie mentioned us in the beginning, saying something about the students who came there and pointed at my class. It was so amazing, I spent all my money on a teddy bear dressed in some snazzy clothes

      Melody Dyk well as far as I know, the broadway play hasn't been cancled, but the genie has been replaced because James Monroe Iglehart has chosen to do a role in Hamilton from now on, but Aladdin will still be happening, just not the same genie, I hope that helps ^.^ also I'm sorry for my late reply

  • @GanonGhidorah
    @GanonGhidorah 8 лет назад +9

    Every time I see scenes from this play, I love it more and more. Especially cause of Genie.
    But however, for the first time, I have to question the directing style with how the scene opened; because I feel I'm correctly assuming this is the Show's Intro.
    For the one thing; the song opened up on the Chorus. That's something that I don't believe Song's should do, unless they immediately want you pumped. Because Stage Musicals have the Luxury of Show and Don't Tell, I feel like a song should always open in a calmer fashion and then lead up to the Chorus. And then as the song goes on, it becomes bigger and louder and more exciting.
    If it were me directing, I'd have Genie disguised as a Merchant - much like in the movie. He'd slowly walk on stage from the side - or maybe even travel through the audience using the lamp to light his path. (That would help build atmosphere) I'd have the Agrabah Stage-Set in darkness under a very dim blue light, with the ensemble slowly moving about their routine. (Again - building atmosphere)
    When Genie walks onto stage, set to the music, he begins to sing the intro to the song.
    "Oh I come from a land; it's a far away place, where the Caravan Camels Roam."
    Then as he slowly makes his way to center-stage, he surely approaches the Chorus of the Song. Then as he - and he alone - sings the chorus of the song, the stage lights up to better reveal the Agrabah set-piece and shows just how colorful it is, as well as the ensemble on-stage. Their role becomes more prominent as they move from their routine positions and begin to simulate a "busy community".
    Genie then faces the audience and acknowledges them, finally adding the lines at the beginning. "Welcome to Agrabah. What? You've never been? Well...Let me tell you ALL about it."
    And then the song can finally commence with the Ensemble joining in the dance routine; it's as if Agrabah has come alive to perform this show. I admit that the end of the Scene was PERFECT; exactly how it should go, with the entire cast coming together to perform. It just needed a bit more subtlety in order to earn that ending; build up to it more properly.
    But that's just my opinion. Does anyone agree? Disagree? Feel free to let me know, and tell me what you would do.

      +GanonGhidorah I admittedly didn't read your whole comment, but I think they opted to do this opening Greek chorus style, as in, the chorus comes in at the opening, tells you exactly what you're about to see, and then the show starts. (Chorus here as in "all-knowing character" or "narrator", not as in "the refrain in a song.") I do get that you literally mean they start singing the "Arabian nights like Arabian days" lyrics first, instead of starting with a verse, like in the movie. But I think my comment is still relevant, as this into very much screams "Greek chorus, as used in Greek tragedies and comedies."
      *edit* I'd also like to point out that the show isn't the same as the movie, so there are a few changes.

    • @woods-raytheatricals7263
      @woods-raytheatricals7263 8 лет назад +3

      +GanonGhidorah They also cut a verse or two from the genie's opening, normally he has more of a solo opening before the chorus appears.

      Have you ever seen this on broadway? Well if you didn't, there is an overture and then the curtain comes actually down and the genie (JMI) has his own opening and his own set of lines that makes the audience laugh, but in this particular video they didn't show that. They just showed "Arabian Nights" which what the video is for, not the actual opening. Hope that helped!

    Uh . . . who's Aladdin's 3rd posse member? I get why Carpet had to be turned into a human - even on Broadway it's hard to make folks believe in a dancing rug. And I understand why Abu had to be turned into a human, especially if Iago was given the same treatment. But who's the 3rd guy supposed to be? Or are they all supposed to be Abu, and Carpet shows up later in the Cave of Wonders?

    • @Ranney165
      @Ranney165 9 лет назад +7

      The short answer is that there IS no Abu. The long answer is that Aladdin hangs around with three other thieves named Babkak, Omar, and Kasim.

      +ztslovebird I like the solution that California adventure gave to carpet. The person playing it moved very well and it looked entertaining. Am I the only one that thought the 3 "friends" made the show lose a bit of its Aladdin feeling? I also wished more focus to the Genie. the actor is AMAZING, he deserved more screen time in my opinion. But I guess I'm just being too picky :/

    • @ztslovebird
      @ztslovebird 8 лет назад +2

      Jessia Medeiros Agreed. Aladdin's plight as a penniless loner is less pronounced when he has 3 friends, and his receiving the three wishes while the friends have to be his entourage makes Aladdin seem more selfish and shallow.

    They should have study a lot more. With an excellent musical material and an enormous fantasy and theatrical material that could be used directly from A thousand and one nights, this show is the lack of everything. Wrong colors, wrong actors (I don´t know why, in every excerpt, the Genie is just standing center stage and when his voice can not do what a genie voice most suddenly appears a woman dressed in the uggliest costumes (in my opinion) seen on Broadway and do the job of the main character. What????? Suppose this show never should have take its way to Broadway. Absurd additions wtf with Aladdin's friends?
