Universal’s House of Horrors was a haunted house attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, which opened on March 31st, 2007, and closed on September 1st, 2014. In this video we take a look at the history of the former attraction within soundstage 13, the encounters with characters from Universal’s classic horror films, and the attraction’s closure and demolition for a new attraction, The Walking Dead.

I think it's a shame that Universal replaced something timless and classic in favor of something like The Walking Dead, which is arguably just a fad
It's almost a testament to how Hollywood has a habit of forgetting its roots
exactly
show's been running too long and now it's just plain bad

I have always felt that Universal missed the boat on this one by not turning House of Horror into a dark ride to rival Disney’s Haunted Mansion. They have the greatest IPs and technology to pull it off. They could even combine Universal Horror with Hammer Horror since they have US rights to most Hammer properties. And I would love to design it for them if they want some ideas.
US? United States rights? yes of course we have U.S. rights
Well they are building a theme land area revolved around the Universal Monsters in Florida by some point around the 2020’s, so we might get our wish after all.

Walking dead is gonna be so dated in 10 years
We as patreons should sign a petition to bring it back....
The only good thing about walking dead is how they leave it open during Hollywood horror nights and helps mitigate the lines for all the other mazes
*has flashbacks of running away dodging the scare actors while screaming*
Man I missed the house of horrors

Hey happy birthday 60 years
Hey Universal Hollywood I’m just saying you might wanna see about replacing the Walking Dead in the near future with this cause the show ain’t doing so well.
Princess/Queen CB ikr
I wouldn't doubt if they close it. They're closing down a ton of restaurants both in the park and city walk. They're also remodeling the whole lower lot. The Mummy ride will officially be gone soon. Universal is a shit show right now.
I could see the replace the walking dead with the Purge
Terror Home no mummy noooooooio!
Terror Home the mummy? Where’d you hear that your uncles godsons friends brother who works at universal? Hahaha
This is what got me and my sister into horror films. The first time she went through she was holding on to me and terrified, but after that she wanted to go through again and again. That Frankenstein set was so impressive. I miss this a lot. HHN fills the void but there was something special about this one.
I believe the Frankenstein set was based off of the one from Van Helsing. The previous attraction there was based off of said movie.
I remember having to walk through this and the Mummy one as a kid. It was really creepy.
All I remember was a corpse hitting glass and bugs, in the mummy. And the bridge over Frankenstein's lab.
I also remember kicking a small scareactor when the touched my shoulder.
same bro i never finished the maze
God i remember the body bag part. I have never shaked so much in my life. The maze wasn't even that scary. It was just at that particular section I was really scared. Now I have a weird sense of nostalgia. Thank you for the video!!

The Van Helsing walkthrough was my first childhood trauma! Yay! 😂

The Haunted Horror house was 10x better than The Walking Dead, and also took much longer to walk through. I remember my family got lost from the rest of the group and there was visually no one ahead or behind us which made the hanging body bag section hella creepy.
Thanks for putting so much work into these videos. Pretty awesome how you do an intro, a walkthrough, and even decide to include the experience after audiences leave the attraction like the gift shop.

This is my favorite permanent walkthrough Universal created. I loved that they went back to their roots for this one.
Why does Universal continually crap on their horror roots? They gave the genre a new meaning and helped shape it into what it is today. I’ve always wondered why I don’t see anything about the universal monsters in the park. It’s all Harry Potter, Kung Fu Panda, fast and the furious and Kong. This would’ve been an amazing attraction to see. I scare easily but I love the original universal monster movies. I wish they would at least have an exhibit showcasing a lot of the original stuff. The walking dead attraction will soon lose an audience. The show is apparently on its last legs. What then? Sorry for rambling but it just makes me sad to see Universal embracing their roots only to literally demolish them.
They don't just shit on their horror roots. They shit on ALL of their roots for the sake of what's in the now. Yeah, because Kung Fu Panda is going to have as much staying power as JAWS or Back to the Future....
Mr Maws so true. I hate to compare Universal to Disney but I have to. Disneyland still has a lot of the original rides that were at the park. The also update renovate and Nurture their older attractions. Matterhorn just got a new que update and animatronic. The haunted mansion gets a retheming for Christmas. It’s also got the hatbox ghost.
My point is that there is a way to do your history justice. Disneyland even still has great moments with mr Lincoln and they update that animatronic every few years.
I will say though I think California Adventure is their more “experimental” Park but it was also a park that was rushed when being built. I think now Disney is just starting to flesh it out with cars land Pixar Pier and the coming marvel land. If universal showed the same love of history that Disney has you’d see an updated Jaws ride with a new animatronic, an exhibit about the universal monsters and a walk through(like this), a ride through the history of cinema (like the great movie ride at WDW) on top of Harry Potter and king fu panda.
Thomas R that’s interesting to hear. I guess Disney could considered the outlier when it comes to theme park attractions. For example I’ve never heard for Disney telling Imagineers that they couldn’t do stuff.
To my earlier point I think Disney has just become timeless while Universal Horror has been allowed to fade away. I wish we could make a petition to bring some sort of lasting horror presence to Universal.
Nintendo world to come we will see how that goes
Who cares about Kung-Fu-Panda, it's a dead series already.
I really miss this Maze it was a classic. It’s been five years since it’s been gone and I’m still pissed off that it’s gone
Me too! It truly was my favorite 😭
0:30 I shouted out loud "IT'S CINEMASSACRE'S MOOOOOONSTER MADNESS!"
Ah! A man of culture!!
Hell yeah!
That Marvel Mania restaurant would have worked better today, given the popularity of the MCU.
It's looks like new conjuring movie house maze party oasr awesome picture awards TCM hollywood netflix original post office box office depot near saved by James wan knows all about it take about
It looked amazing. I just jumped with the “get out”!!!
Someone else mentioned it, but there was also a maze through the Grinch's Lair. You got to meet up with the Grinch (Jim Carey version) in the main room. Max meet and greet too. Outside was a snow play area and a slide down Mt. Crumpit.
A history video of the Castle Theater would be great, though I feel the world needs to know the joy and wonder that was the Adventures of Conan, a Sword and Sorcery Spectacular stage show. To date, the best show the park has ever done.
Oh yes I think it was from a Christmas event or so I think
God bless you with that SpongeBob reference.
spongebob's the best.
R.I.P Stephen Hillenburg
Don’t worry he’s living in the heavens with Stan lee and they could talk about there favorite characters
[Bad at Line art] Damn you. I’m probably gonna cry thinking about that. XD
Fantastic Four cheese pizza? Sounds delicious. Damn, I wish I was alive when Marvel Mania was open, it seemed cool.
I remember screaming and crying through the ride holding my grandpas hand and covering my head with a spongebob hat.
I went in there just one time when I was 13 and ran out crying. Kind of ironic seeing as HHN is now my favorite event to attend every year.
Van Helsing is one of my favorite movie of all time and I must have gone through that attraction over 100 times. I even knew some of the actors by name. That place meant the world to me. Any attraction can mean a number of things to anyone.
I always wondered what happened to this attraction!! I hadn’t gone for years and when I went in 2017 I was so confused!! The walk through was so cool I miss it 😫
No Creature from the Black Lagoon? Aww
The creature never gets any respect! Wonder why that is, he's just as important to the rest of the Universal monsters.
As far as I know, he had a musical and he's featured in the monsters cafe which is pretty sad imo
The musical at Universal Studios Hollywood that only lasted like a year? They did the creature dirty 😂
I kind of want you to take on the musical, just so more people could see it. It's ok if you don't.
Creature of the Black Lagoon: The Musical has been added to the list. I might make it an April Fool's video, as people won't believe it was a real thing 😂Thanks for the suggestion Datal-J.
I’m a huge hhn/universal nerd and was so excited when I went on vacation in Hollywood. This park was something i looked forward to, and I was especially excited to come face to face with my favorite classic monsters. The house of horrors closed the day before I went.............
I had no idea they ended the House of Horrors. I am so glad I was able to experience this! I honestly thought it was just a museum type looking at props and history of universal horror films. I didn't know I was gonna walk into each movie lol I should've read it.
Universal of eld: "We love the Hollywood Monsters!"
Universal now: "Well, we screwed up The Mummy. Guess that's that."
Well, they Are giving the invisible man a New try, and Appearently they Are making it a legit horror movie, so, there is still Hope
"did you miss me?"
bold of you to assume I know who you are.
Edit: the clip sparked a hyperfixation and now I very much know who he is
This unlocked a childhood memory. I use to be so scared to go in , but I still went anyways and I remember a weird scent throughout lol. I wish they brought this back and the mummy one
Wish I got to go to this but by the time I first went to USH back in 2015, This maze was long gone. Walking Dead maze doesn't compare to this
Edit: also they should bring back the Marvel Mania restaurant it would do so well considering how popular the MCU is now
Im p sure they'll have issues with the marvel restraunt because of how it's a Disney property now
@@stephaniezee9704 true. Disney should bring back Marvel Mania
I can't believe no one's talking about Jack at the end! AH I'M SO EXCITED FOR A VIDEO ON JACK!!!!!
I really miss this attraction. I would go through it multiple times every visit back when I had a pass. Such a great time and I'm sad to see the Universal Monsters underrepresented at USH.
Honestly I now miss this maze. I went to it twice but I couldn’t handle the ending but after going to horror night and knotts scary farm for the first time and Survived lol now I regret not going more often with my sister 😑.
I thought it was a nothing attraction when I first looked at covering the it but after doing the research I realized a lot of people liked it, as it was a different type of attraction when compared to everything else at the park. It also looks like it was a lot better than The Walking Dead attraction that replaced it.
Theme Park History yes it was much better; I’m not a fan of The Walking Dead; however, if they would have made it as a Laser tag walk through maze like knotts has at their Halloween event then it’s a different experience all year round.
Wow I wish this was still open. I would love to have done this and the Jaws attraction 😭😭😭😭
This was an INCREDIBLE attraction. I miss it so much. The Walking Dead queue is amazing, but the attraction itself is pretty lackluster.
There use to be a older version
In the 70's
Castle Dracula.
It had Frankenstein son in it...
Frankie.
I remember when the house of horrors had the Evil Dead living room /cellar door scene. So many memories this attraction once shared, and some even i didnt know about before. Classic USH.
I loved this maze so much that I’m glad USH made one for this year. As much as I was a fan of TWD, this classic monster maze was great. TWD is good but there’s something missing from it.
Im soo glad i got to walk through this❤️I’ll always remember when leather face chased me out at the end 😂
I remember going before it closed when I was 11/12 and being TERRIFIED. My dad eventually convinced me to go on, and I ended up loving it. I didn’t know that it got taken out though until now though :(
So many of these would have been my worst nightmare, kinda cool to take a tour with you guys tho. You just earnt a follow.
I remember going in this as a kid back when it first opened and I was terrified, but now I wish I could go back as an adult and appreciate the props and sets
I remember i once went, while i was walking i was just holding my mom as in hugging her from behind because i was too scared to see the monsters. At the end of the attraction my mom noticed i didnt had my cap on, so one of the "monsters" returned it to me, i was really embarrased
Im sorry it was removed but glad its back up!!
But yes please do Backdraft at Universal Studios as well as The Great Movie Ride at Disney MGM
bryce atu it isn’t back up
Great video! I never got to experience this. Sad it was removed.
Even though I already saw this I still rewatched it and left a like because you're a good Channel my dude. Best of luck and hopefully you can get over this.
I went in this when I was 11. I came out with the biggest smile. I been watching horror movies since I was 3 and that was nothing.
Looks like this building has seen a lot of action over the years! I like this channel as it shows some amazing footage of past attractions.
You had actually forgotten something. After the Chicken Run maze was closed down, for a brief time, and to promote Ron Howard’s live-action Grinch film that was coming out in theatres in 2000, it was turned into a maze based on the Grinch’s Lair on Mt. Crumpet, which literally had screen-used props and set pieces to make it look like it in the movie. I had been trying to find pictures around the internet for YEARS, with very little result 😔
Great video, nonetheless! Nothing but fond memories when the building was still around. I ate at Marvel Mania once when I was a kid (had some kind of Blooming Onion dish that was tasty), and saw the maze through its various themes and variations ♥️
I loved the House of Horrors. It was my favorite attraction at the park. I really think Universal should consider bringing it back in some form.
Dude I love your stuff I cant believe you don't have more subscribers because your videos are of great quality
man i really wish this was still open, now that ive seen these films i can actually appreciate the experience. back then i remember just trying to get through as fast and scare free as i could lol
Van Helsing: Fortress Dracula was always my favorite. Don’t give a damn what anyone says.
KatieVanHelsing I wish I could’ve been through that. Van Helsing is great.
3:53 i remember seeing this on a commercial for the ride or something on an old VHS tape. so i thought it was in the new mummy ride. when i went to universal studios with my family i was so scared of the ride [thinking it had ppl in costumes running around and scaring me] i noped the hell away from that ride
Hey! I just discovered your channel and am a fan-I quickly subscribed. I would love one on the Ghostbuster attraction found in Universal Florida during the 2000s?
They would make kids into ghostbusters in the cue and then put on the show. I loved it, but would love to learn about it as an adult now.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you for the sub Laura! The Ghostbusters Spooktacular has been added to the list, thank you for the suggestion.
omg i was starting to watch and realized i've seen this before! hope everything gets fixed soon, y'all's content is amazing!
I’ve always loved universal studios. Pure nostalgia for me I’ve never been to the Hollywood location though. Do they still have old rides or is it all super hero’s and kid stuff now?
Poopy Revenge of the Mummy is still there at least, although it was made to be a much shorter experience than the Orlando location due to space issues.
I remember going to the Van Helsing theme of this attraction and sheesh......as a kid it scared the shit out of me. I remember just standing there as one of these ghouls came up to me and growled and ran fast. Then I remember seeing a guy being chased by one during the spinning tunnel. Then as we were crossing this corridor, I thought okay im safe, people in front of me are passing by, and as I went through this doorway, a hand touched me and scared me again!!! I felt frustrated cause I felt targeted lol. But it was great memories nonetheless, and I was disappointed when I visited Universal Studios Hollywood and that Walking Dead attraction was not scary at all.
I remember walking through the Van Helsing part as a kid and the Werewolf ending scared the crap out me
When u showed that iron man in the tube I immediately remember seeing images of this restaurant when I was younger. Either that or they re used the style in another park somewhere because I know I’ve seen that before
Im so glad I went here on my birthday months before it was taken down
Great video! Maybe you can do the history of Spider Man Rocks! in Universal Studios Hollywood.
2:40 Great match cut!
If you could do a video on Stitch's Great Escape/Alien Encounter, that would be amazing!
Espectacular ! Gracias por estos vídeos. Es mi canal favorito !!!
they replaced Marvel Mania with Chicken Run Maze....FML
I had honestly forgotten about that terrible movie.
I wish they kept this maze instead
I use to love that attraction . I was sad when they took it off
Chicken run maze?! The fuuuuck?! Lmao!
Crazy, I got to see this when it was brand new. We went there on our honeymoon at the beginning of April 2007. It was the first walk through haunt I ever went through, and it inspired me to become a scare actor. It was so scary and the scenes where good, I hated the body bag room! the maze that replaced it the "Walking Dead" one was sad and lack luster it seemed shorter and the actors in there had no energy, it wasn't scary at all. I heard from an employee there that the building was deteriorating and that's why they had to close it. so sad as it was so much better that the new one.
Can you do the history of Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye
10/12/18 UPDATE: The original House of Horrors video that was uploaded on 10/5 was taken down due to a copyright claim. While we dispute whether or not the claim is legit, we have attempted to re-edit the video to avoid any further issues. If the strike is retracted and the original video is restored this video will be set to private. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
Bummer to hear that. Glad you re uploaded it because I didn't get a chance to watch it the first time, and when I finally did I saw that it was taken down
Happens to the best of us
I'm sorry that your video got taken down. Stupid RUclips
Is my suggestion still on the list for a future video? The muppet vision 3-D?
Theme Park History copy right claim? What are they trying to say that you infringed on?
I remember my mom made me go through the maze when I was about 7 or 8 and got the shit scared out of me, and I never went back in again. Kinda dumb because im super into horror now
This is fantastic! I didn't even know this existed. I would have loved to walk through all the different incarnations of this maze. Too bad they don't have something like that year 'round here in Florida's Universal park.
House of Horrors is better than The walking dead tbh
honestly that room of chucky dolls still scares me and i experienced it 10 years ago. 😭 it was an awesome walk through attraction though and i’m so sad they got rid of it.
LOL. Jack at the end was great. Love him and Chance as HHN hosts.
Them neglecting the Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon is criminal
It would cool if this attraction was in Orlando Florida as an all opened walkthrough haunted house.
I only walked through the Universal House Of Horrors once. I’m not a big fan of horror but at least I’m proud that I walked in the horror house.
I remember walking through this all the time getting scared and having fun lol man that was good times for sure
i went to universal for the first time when this was around wish i would have gone in it thanks for the video! wish they would bring it back
Van Helsing was the first attraction I ever went on as a kid and I barely remember it since I kept my eyes closed for the majority of it lmao
1:59-22:25 RIP to Stan Lee
Would love to see you guys do the Alfred Hitchcock edu/tainment and the Fifel Goes West park at Universal Studios Hollywood.
I was 7 when I went through scared the piss out of me
I don't understand why they made Walking Dead a permanent thing when everyone hated it being at Horror Nights every year. It sucks. The queue is always five minutes.
My anxiety is through the roof but yes, the Universal Monsters version of the walk-through is scarier than the Walking Dead one. I'd probably have a heart condition by the end of it.
I remember this haunted house it scared me when I was a kid
Thanks for this video I really appreciate it very much
You should do a video about the Universal Studio Tram Tour
Please do one on Terror on churchs street station! There is so much stories about that place
I remember when I was younger i didn’t even make it all the way in this maze I was so scared now I regret not going into it
When I went to universal as a kid, my dad and I went into this place because we thought it was an exhibit. We didn't know it was a maze and I got the shit scared out of me. Good times.
This video is a bit old so for anyone wondering why it's not at the park anymore, The Walking Dead attraction was closed on March 3rd 2020. It was demolished and rebuilt as the new ride The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash in 2021.
0:21 Noseferatu!!!!! (I couldn't resist)
I think we need to see a video on either the HULK ride, Hogwarts Castle ride, or MIB ride in Universal/Island of Adventure
I remember when I was a kid I went inside thinking I could do it UNTIL I was in the front of the line read the Rules and Conditions one of them stood out to me “Actors can touch you BUT you can’t “ and I instantly lost it and ran to the exit 😂😂 good nostalgia
I've never been through this maze personally. The first time I went to Universal was in 2007. I was 7 years old and there was no way in hell I was going through it at that age, I didn't come back to Universal again until I was a teenager but by then this was long gone and I went through the Walking Dead which I frankly thought was too brief and underwhelming. Seeing this made me sad and wish this was still in operation because it looks awesome. 7 year old me would be too scared to appreciate this but teenage, horror obsessed me would have been in ecstasy. Shame this had to go
