Nepal Micro-Hydro

  • Lighting mountain communities in Nepal through one simple solution
Access to clean and affordable modern energy is critical for social and economic development. Worldwide, about 1.5 billion have no access to electricity, and 1 billion more have access only to unreliable electricity networks.
In the Himalayan country, Nepal, the towering mountains are a formidable obstacle to the people who need modern energy. Only 20 percent of the mountain villages have access to electricity.
Since 1996, UNDP, its partners and the Government of Nepal have worked together with local communities to provide energy to remote areas through one clean, simple and plentiful means: water. Nearly 400 micro-hydro power plants have been built bringing energy to roughly half a million people.
Local communities themselves dig the channels to divert the water that powers the small plants. They also provide the labor to install the power lines and the light.
"Micro-hydro was introduced in Nepal before, but the difference UNDP made was to put community people at the center of the project so that they are the driver to introduce this technology then also maintain and then have full ownership," says Shoko Nodo, UNDP Country Director in Nepal.
Through these small hydro plants, big changes are happening. Clinics, schools, radio stations, businesses are all flourishing where once there was darkness and no electricity.
This five-minute movie on the micro-hydro power plants of Nepal is a sneak preview of a longer documentary that will air on Discovery Channel in 2013.

Chinglang Konyak First of all, there’s not a single country on this planet which helps the other one just out of sympathy! There’s always a hidden plan whether it be long term or short term. During the blockade caused by India, Nepalese government went ahead and bought gasoline products from China which resulted in utter disagreements from Indian authorities claiming it was against the trade treaty we had. See? It’s not really help to be honest. As for India neglecting northeast India, there’s always uneven development and priorities in all countries specially developing countries. So calm down and be respectful. Indians like yourself are the reasons why many Nepalese hate Indians

Sohil Paudel Mao forces seem to have done a good job of propaganda to make it look like India blocked your supplies. Their goal was to let down the India supporting mahadesis which of course will not be tolerated. Nepals main enemy are your own politicians, no need to blame anyone else.

We cannot deny that India is not just trying to have a control over Nepal, but it is actually doing it. There had been issues lately and in the past regarding the border patrol department of India changing the position of the border stones that divide the two countries. There has also been incidents where some innocent and patriotic protesters of Nepal being shot dead. Also, the political arena of Nepal is largely controlled by India resulting in the Nepalese being misrepresented in the world. However, these are not the greatest issues that Nepal faces. In my opinion, the people of Nepal must change and they must stop choosing the worst representatives. If we can, we must be able to identify the potential that new Nepal has as far as not being misrepresented and not ruining foreign relations is concerned. It is not that we do not have the courage to live by ourselves, but it is always good to have good friends all around the world who will help us transform ourselves. And by the way, we were always independent from foreign domination, and many have given their lives to save this nation,so I think that we are going to be independent in the future also.

No, a welder does not use 8kw. Most small welders can operate on less that 2kw. Most welding done in a small rural village will never require 8kw of welding. I've worked with some welders on the railroad that would draw every bit of 60kw and run off 440v 3 phase. Nothing within 100 miles of that place requires a welder that big. They are not welding locomotive frames.
