I remember being really confused when both Dr. Harrison and Lady Ludlow weren't in Cranford, now I'm excited that I have two novellas to read about these characters!
That's such a bummer about a third of this being used up on a story about the French Revolution. 😴😴😴

Ooo you will enjoy them, especially Mr Harrison's Confessions - I'm sure you will love that one!

Big time skimming of the French bit.

I have just finished My Lady Ludlow, and I LOVED it! The only place it suffered (terribly) is that middle section about the French aristocrats and the Revolution. It's a shame, because that story-in-a-story interrupted an otherwise engrossing read.
I've heard that *Cranford* *My Lady Ludlow* and *Mr. Harrison's Confessions* are all part of the Cranford Chronicles. I've read and enjoyed them all (in different ways!!), but I don't see how they are connected. Do you know?

I totally agree - the French Revolution bit is a bit tangential and annoying!
So, Cranford, My Lady Ludlow and Mr Harrison's Confessions aren't connected, but they were all made into the miniseries Cranford a few years ago, which combined them, and is why they're now often printed together.

I have yet to read "My Lady Ludlow" or indeed any of Elizabeth Gaskell's novellas *gasp*
(But I am taking "Cranford" along on holiday tomorrow!)

Oh, "Cranford" is an old friend and faithful companion! I re-read it at least once a year. Sorry I was unclear :-/

I find a lot of writers at the time, indeed even into the 20th c. often when off on tangents. One of the novels I liked very much was Beulah by the American author Augusta Jane Evans Wilson. It was about an orphaned brother and sister who were separated by adoption. No body wanted Beulah😥 and she spends most of the story trying to reunite with him and more importantly trying to keep a relationship with him. His adoptive parents were very weather and snobbish. They have course disapproved of poor Beulah. ( Sniffles) So every once in awhile as the reader is enjoying this tear jerker, Mrs. Wilson takes to her soapbox and yada yada yada. Her most noted work was St. Elmo, which my late partner owned and dropped in my lap one day. Sigh. Another momento mori in my little cottage of memories and Dust...well I gotta get cleaning..

That sounds like a really interesting book - I'll add it to my list.

Could that middle third be skipped when reading? (Yes, I would be willing.)

Probably. It does still have worth, it just feels tangential. I feel like it I ever reread My Lady Ludlow for a third time I might skip it..
