  • Hey everyone! Here's a demo of Eddie's Brown Sound, using Pariah Pickups. The bridge is a Pasadena White, the neck is a prototype and I'm playing my Music Man Axis guitar, straight through my Germino Lead 55 head with Celestion Greenbacks. Hope you enjoy!

    I've said it many times on your channel Jacob - I have heard/seen very, very few people who have ever come as close to Eddie's tone and playing feel as you do. Awesome work indeed and yes it's time for you to really blow up on youtube. Leverage that amazing tone and playing feel and become the best Jacob Deraps that you can be...

      @coreyweatherford3297 7 лет назад +4

      Man, he has a bluesy feel no doubt but I've never seen a blues player pick as hard as Eddie does. That's where a lot of that out of control tone comes from, the snappy attack, the twang, only all heavily distorted so it's a sound of his own.

    I think I said "GOD DAMN!" out loud about 8 times during that clip. There are people who can play some EVH licks, and there are people who have found a reasonable facsimile of The Brown Sound through a combination of effects and equipment. I have ::NEVER:: heard such a spot-on Brown tone in my life, outside of The Man himself of course, and you, Jacob, are clearly a student of the game, a brilliant technician, and a RARE F'n talent. Does my heart good, man. Bravo.

    I'm sure that some of you are familiar with this story, but for those of you that are not, here it is. Back in the day during a sound check before a show, Eddie was on stage dialing his sound and tone in for the night and Ted Nugent was backstage watching and listening shaking his head in disbelief of the incredible sound Eddie was getting playing with what Ted called, a bunch of junk duct taped together that made no sense especially next to his huge expensive state of the art rack mount set up. Ted couldn't quite believe it and wondered out on stage and asked Eddie if he could give his set up a try. Well, that's where Ted really began to understand just how god damn amazing Eddie really was when after hitting a few cords and ripping a few scales that what he was getting sounded nothing like what Ed was getting from that ducted taped junk. My point is this, Eddies sound and tone comes from his fingering and pick attack and timing, plus his equipment. That's the most impressive part of Jacobs covers that has stood out for me. Jacob has the most accurate fingering, pick attack, technique and timing when it comes to duplicating Eddies playing than anyone else I have ever heard, and it comes out very easily and naturally for him.

    • @tonezillap90
      @tonezillap90 6 лет назад +14

      mrsbieberfeverluv Thanks for sharing that. I'm sure a lot of younger players haven't heard it. That's the first thing I tell my students about learning VH songs. In fact I use it as an example of tone and creating their own sound. IMO, his timing is the hardest part of learning VH songs. He's very percussive..You kinda have to think like a drummer.

      I was around back then, even had the guitar mag with that story.
      The one thing I never understood tho what was Ted playing?
      Eruption or Cat Scratch Fever?
      In my mind knowing that would have influenced the outcome of that story through the years.
      I was playing through my rig once, when I handed my guitar to my son who also plays.
      The outcome? He sounded like himself - on my rig - with my tone coming out of the speaker.

    Well done Jacob! Well done! The 'brown' sound is inspired by the hands. The hands push the attack on the guitar which pushes the amp which responds by creating the sound. Simple, aggressive, and awesome! Again, well done!

    One of the things I note with EVH is the nasal frequency boost, most noticeable when solo tooling around the 2nd-5th frets to my ear.
    As well as the saturated preamp almost "drenching" the palm mutes in harmonic heaven overdrive, hard to describe but I know it when I hear it.
    You are not only in the ballpark on that sound, you're on the pitchers mound. Great job dialing it in.

Ted did that, plugged in and started playing and guess what? He sounded like Ted Nugent! A lot of Eddie's sound came from Eddie, not just the equipment.

I cant play even half as good as the guy in the video, but when all my guitar buddies come over, they all say "you sound just like Eddie..." I have the tone nailed with my rig. I keep practicing, but I will never be that good. But the gear does it for me...

      Along those same lines (paraphrasing from memory here) Edward had another famous guitarist ask if he could play through VH's rig. Edward said sure and the guitarists was flustered that he couldn't get the "brown sound" even though Edward would take the guitar and sound correct. Edward then asked if he could play through the other guy's rig... he did and he sounded like VH. Edward smiled and said "the tone's in my fingers."

    Hi, I noticed you’re always plugged to the “low sensitivity” input of your Germino: is it a stock Lead 55 or is it modded so that input has a different wiring? Would you share your amp settings? By the way, excellent playing as always!

    Utterly SAVAGE. You attack the living crap outta those strings, and I'm realizing and learning so much from watching how you just brutalize your strings to get so much of that incredible tone and attack. You are incredible. Thanks for all the great videos!
