I hope you get that bowfin. We have them in Glendale Lake and a ranger told me to kill them if I catch them. I don't kill anything I don't intend to eat or use for bait. I understand the snapping turtle blues. I caught an absolute monster in Shawnee Lake that destroyed my best friends heavy net. I decided he could keep the hook as a souvenir😂
That’s interesting that they told you to kill the Bowfin typically they don’t cause much harm to ecosystems unless they are truly invasive there. Northern Snakehead are an invasive species of fish and are commonly confused with Bowfin. Northern Snakeheads are supposed to be killed if caught. But if they’re in open water they’re pretty much here to stay

To my knowledge bowfin aren't indiscriminate killers. They have also always been in that lake and are generally well hidden. What bothered me about his statement is that they are unique and aren't found in every waterway in Pa. I only saw one caught. A man pulled a small one out of the spillway. I told him that I never saw a living bowfin and he said this is the last you'll see this alive. He pulled a knife slit its throat and tossed it to the ground🤷♂️ Both bowfin and snakehead belong to an ancient order but I never heard of problems with bowfin. People actually don't know much about them.
@@davekeller1052 Yeah that’s the problem most people need to learn more how to properly identify the fish that they catch because Bowfin are native to the area and have been for over centuries. Snakeheads have the same elongate body shape but a distinct “snake like” pattern down the side. In landlocked areas like a lake Snakehead do pose a threat to the ecosystem. But Bowfin should not be killed just because someone believes it’s a Snakehead, at least that’s what I believe is happening in this case.
I use 4lb line for castability but I’ve used 6lb and it’s worked fine I just wouldn’t go higher without using the float that comes with the kit or a split shot to help with casting distance

Warmouths get very large and taste good.
I’ve seen records of them getting pretty big, but never knew they were good eating. Makes sense though.
