Great point about the dew collectors. I loved them for their use providing imagery that was reminiscent of someone scything crops but underlining how very different Arrakis is by the crop being the water rather than the plant. Familiar yet alien.

@@AtrulionI'm not worried about that, from the trailers you can tell that Chani gets more fleshed out. Since Denis has avoided the interior monologues from the book, I think he uses her to voice Paul's trepidation about what is coming. I just hope he does not leave out some critical plot points, especially one about Gurney and Jessica. There is a point in the book that Paul takes the final leap, and it is because he does not 'see' something about Gurney. Just saying...

I have my ticket for next week's IMAX projection. SO EAGER!
FYI, Denis Villeneuve was interviewed on french tv recently (the tv show is called "La Quotidienne" on TF1). And he pretty much confirmed that Messiah was going to happen.
It's in French, but I can translate the relevant bit for you:
At one point, the journalist asks: "When will you make a third Dune movie, is Dune Messiah confirmed?"
Denis answers:"as soon as we have a good script"
Then the journalist insists "So it IS confirmed?"
Denis answers with a quiet "yes"

    • @loreparty
      @loreparty  4 месяца назад +2

We've also heard rumors that Messiah is already greenlit and they're just waiting for the ideal time to announce it (my guess is soon after the official release of Part Two).

To the comment about the voice, the inaccuracy may be making it seem more commonly known than it was in the dune universe. The baron knowing about it was a very hard won piece of info. They used it incredibly sparingly and usually fatally so it wouldn't become widely known and countermeasures would be found.

Just wanna throw in my perspective on something here. As someone who’s waiting to read the book until after this movie, I like the way the voice is used. I think it should be a bit of a supernatural power. I’ve heard Frank talk about how people do it irl, but I think in this Sci-Fi world it’s ok to exaggerate that a little bit. I want to think that the voice can take dominion over your mind for moment. Otherwise I think it’s too much of a stretch to see it working on people that much. Yeah your mom telling you to wash the dishes may work, but that’s also your mom. If a hobo on the street tells me to clip his toe nails, I’m gonna run away. Yknow? They treat it like it’s a super ability, and if it’s just a stern tone of voice then I can’t really buy that as a special ability.

Jason Momoa says that there is a 4 to 6 hour version of Dune 1 that was cut down and they missed major parts out of the book to cut it. I suspect that the same is true for Dune 2 and that if they released both versions, the longer version would get far more viewers. Denis says that he does not do 'Director's cuts' but he might find that the studio as well as the fans want EVERYTHING because the whole film with all the edited bits back in would be awesome. You might need to bring a picnic or have bathroom breaks - but they did that for Lawrence of Arabia and that was epic too.

@@king_supreme1102 We also know some of what was extracted.
      1. There's Duncan Idaho's trip to meet the Fremen. That should have started the movie and was quite long. Denis probably felt that he could show the Fremen and their sietches when Paul arrives there.
      2. The Banquet where the Atreides meets the locals
      3. The scene where they know that someone in the house is a traitor and Jessica talks with Yueh.
      4. The scene where Jessica falls in the desert and gets swallowed by quicksand but Paul digs her out.
      5. The scene with Paul and Chani's first son
      6. The scene where their son is murdered by the Harkonnens.
There's probably many more, but even some of the cast members such as Jason Momoa and Rebecca Fergusson were talking about scenes that were removed.

    • @AdeptCharon
      @AdeptCharon 4 месяца назад +1

Jason Momoa wasn't talking about an actual cut that ever existed.
And Denis won't make a different cut, because when he cuts something, even if it's something he loves, it's cut for a reason. And if there was a reason to cut it, he believes it should not see the light of day again. The man speaks in grim language around the subject, so I'm constantly surprised to see people think there is a chance there'd ever be a different cut lol

some thoughts about the city of Arrakeen feeling sterile and not lived-in, cuz I thought the same when I first saw Part 1:
    1) Denis’s style is just clean and minimal like that. Thought some parts of BR2049 were way too clean as well, for example, especially compared to the original BR movie. Would’ve loved to have seen a bustling marketplace on Arrakeen, but:
    2) I think we seldom read about the common folk in the first Dune book. iirc, the book makes a point of how separated/disconnected the nobility/houses are from the common people. Paul himself has no friends his age, only has his mentors like gurney and duncan. Gotta be holed up in their palace cuz they’re too paranoid about assassins. The daily hustle and bustle of Arrakeen is just a place the first Dune novel doesn’t go. Only time we see citizens from Paul’s perspective are pilgrims visiting those trees. Or in the novels, I recall the Atreides ending a cruel Harkonnen water-wasting custom and instead give water to beggars.
    3) Arrakeen is built to be a fortress that is shielded from the harsh elements. Ain’t no way we’re seeing anyone through all that concrete.

this review is a perfect example of why criticism as a form is a broken idea. you shouldn’t need to criticize just to criticize something. especially when it weakens the substance of overall review, like it does here. the voice in dv’s rendition is well executed. paul fails at the voice i part 1 because he hasn’t finished his training. the BG don’t use the voice all the time because people are aware when it’s used against them and are aware of its risks (eg when they gag jessica when trying to dispose of her and paul in part 1. note also the drastic lengths they go to to maintain plausible deniability in killing them so that they aren’t caught lying to a truthsayer aka bene gesserit). abusing it would be a quick way to lose counsel with the lords/ people they’re advising. but the fact that it works when they need it to make the bene gesserit incredibly lethal and powerful, even as social constraints balance its practicality. part 2 expanding on it by showing how it can be induce a sensual / hypnotic state underscore the mechanisms by which the bene gesserit have been so successful with their breeding program. their powers of seduction are persuasive. the film intentionally presents the bene gesserit as more powerful than even the harkonnens & emperor himself. which feels true to herbert’s intent.
also, the “telepathic” communication between the two reverend mothers at the end is true to the book. reverend mothers can speak to each others minds through some electromagnetic genetic phenomenon which is never fully explained but is nonetheless true to source.

Doesn't using the voice successfully in this movie imply Paul's strength has grown? There are also kind of power levels to it right? Like Paul silencing the Reverend mother Helen was supposed to be impressive because of how powerful she is. I haven't seen it so I'm just speculating

To me, it is weird to criticize the fact that the voice always works in Dune Part II because this is due to the people using it, the voice could always work now, when (probably) people like Paul, Jessica, or another powerful benegesirit use it because Paul is way stronger now, Jessica is a madre superiora and also Helen Galis morian is, is not like we are talking about common voice users, but really skilled ones

It's hard to explain without getting into spoilers but the voice simply doesn't happen as much in part 2 of the book as it does in Dune: Part 2. Choosing to ADD a bunch of instances of the voice is part of what I'm talking about.
We accept how often it happens in Dune because Frank set our in-world expectations and then stuck to them and I don't see that happening in this adaptation. It's still a 9/10 or even 10/10 movie, don't get me wrong, but maybe when everybody's seen it it'll be more clear what I was talking about here

Overrated. The people who think this film is a “masterpiece” are over selling this film.
It’s funny: it appears to me that people like this film because if you are fortunate enough to watch this on an IMAX screen (bigger than most screens) with exceptional sound, the film is good - No. A film is good if you can watch it on an iPhone, let’s say an action movie, and it still excites you; a drama that breaks-your-heart & makes you cry; and/or makes you think about what you watched, hours, after you finished the film.
I’ve read all six books - one thru four twice - and the Dune story is not about action; which many people think this story is what makes it good. No.
Because I’ve read the first book, twice, I know what’s missing & why this version of Dune is not a good representation of the story & plots of Dune.
I like part 1 better. It’s closer to what I love about the book. And how lucky for, Denis, that he has the technology of CGI to bring a good looking film to the screen. It looks good - won’t deny that - Geidi Prime is my favorite section; after we leave that planet, I got bored.
Honestly, the only actors who kept my attention was Charlotte Rampling & Lea Seydoux. Geidi Prime was the best part of the film. Butler kept my attention, while on the planet; on Arrakis, he didn’t. He became one note and boring.
I like Chalamet & Zendaya. They gave what was needed. But as the movie bored me, so did the characters (and by extension… the actors).
