This is why you don’t have test screenings with very little kids. It’s better to get kids that are like in middle school or at least have a theater with properly working air conditioning. I guess that was another issue.

I love how smoke for Thomas in the real world was created by an ATV with a smoke generator.
In case any of you would be curious on how Thomas and The Magic Railroad SHOULD have been produced, it I believe would be below, much of it having to do with the original scripts:
First of all, the removal of P.T. Boomer, while due to it being considered too frightening by the test audiences, only creates numerous plot holes (an example is Boomer being the reason Lily headed to Shining Time Station rather than Muffle Mountain), and he actually briefly still appears on a few scenes in the film, as well as in the trailer. Plus, Diesel 10 is still not really less frighting than Boomer, and then there is Sailor John in Sodor's Legends of the Lost Treasure, who is a similar villain as well. Thus, having Boomer remain in the film would have HIM who had crashed Lady due to his jealousy over Burnett Stone's relationship with Tasha, as well as his disbelief in magic. As a matter of fact in the final script, Burnett informs Diesel 10, "The magic you refuse to believe in will get the better of you!", when in reality, BOOMER (as I somewhat stated) was the one who was like that.
There would also have been given a reason Diesel 10 came to Sodor: here he was a new engine who Sir Topham Hatt brought to the island in order to help the steam engines, yet he just causes problems for them. His claw also would have been concealed beneath his roof.
George the Steamroller would have been one of Diesel 10's minions also. Also, Splatter and Dodge, while still dim-witted, were slavishly loyal to Diesel 10 and did not turn on him; George did instead, and he foiled Splatter and Dodge along with Junior just prior to the chase. Here, Diesel 10 also referred to the two diesels as "Spladge" rather than "Splodge."
Cranky was to have a non-speaking role here as well, where he dropped a fruit and vegetable crate on Splatter and Dodge when they asked Diesel 10 the reason he let Mr. Conductor escape. There also WERE plans for Edward to appear in this film, only for his model to not be finished in time.
There would have been given a reason Lily was visiting her grandfather Burnett as well: she had an unborn sibling. It was also stated her father was out at work. It would also have an adult Lily (who is now an engineer as well) narrating the tale to her children with her now-husband Patch in place of Mr. Conductor, while they are on a picnic are going through a Sodor scrapbook. The film would then have Lily and Patch walking with their horse in the shot viewing Shining Time Station at the end.
Plus, Burnett Stone would have been given the role as Lady's caretaker by the Conductor family. There would also have been a scene where Stacy Jones shows Lily a photograph of a young Burnett and Tasha dancing, while Boomer angrily watches from the sides.
Additional songs would have been used in the film as well, such as "The Island Song" and "Thomas' Anthem" in the intro sequence, as well as "Night Train" when Thomas and Percy were having their mail trains pulled. The songs would be played be the Jukebox Puppet Band, though usually off-screen in these cases (one or two Jukebox Puppet Band Thomas songs could have worked on-screen for the film, although all of the songs being on-screen for the film would perhaps take up too much film time).
Some addition Shining Time Station characters should have also been included in this film also, such as Horace Schemer, the Jukebox Puppet Band, and the children who appeared on Shining Time Station in its later years (though they would presumably have gotten different child actors, due to their previous ones being older, similar with Billy Twofeathers on how his actor got replaced in this film for some reason). Brain O'Connor may have departed acting when the series ended, but he has since made a comeback in the film Terrorists, and he even DID reprise his role as Schemer in a 2020 Thomas and the Magic Railroad parody on RUclips, so how come not in the actual film? The Shining Time Station characters had more screen time in the original script as well. The Shining Time Station children here would also accompany Thomas, Lady, Burnett Stone, Lily, Patch, Mr. Conductor, Junior through the Magic Railroad to Sodor.
Plus additional Thomas and Friends characters should have been included also, such as Duck, Oliver, Toad, Donald, Douglas, Bill, Ben, the Narrow Gauge Engines, Diesel, Mavis, Daisy, Derek, BoCo, Arry, and Bert. While they would pretty much all appear in the opening scene as the camera shows Sodor, a fair amount of them would attribute to the plot, even if their roles are more minor. If you would examples their scenes, here are a few:
1. During a meeting of Diesel 10 and his henchmen, the Narrow Gauge Engines distract him with their whistles (though in Rusty's case, his horn), rather than Toby with his bell.
2. The one with Arry and Bert would be where they join Diesel 10 on both sides as he was confronting James and Junior at Sodor Ironworks, only for them (James and Junior) to vanish with Junior's whistle's magic gold dust. Diesel 10 then says, "Thanks for the help twins, but getting on either side of mine would be Spladge's job. Or, with them on one side and George on the other." leaving Arry and Bert puzzled.
3. Donald and Douglas spotting and secretly chugging by Diesel 10's henchmen at night, rather than Percy.
There would also have been given a reason on Tidmouth Sheds shown being under repair: the railway was undergoing major repairs.
Even the Rainbow Tiger should have been added in as well; it could also have been portrayed by a different train, such as one from Strasburg Railroad like the Rainbow Sun with Norfolk and Western 475. Though, while I understand that Union Pacific 844 was being repaired and rebuilt and Norfolk and Western 611 was in its second retirement at the time, if both engines WERE able to reprise their roles, that would have been nice.
The engines were also to have different voice actors, including UK ones, which was changed to due the test audiences' reception as well. One such example is Michael Angelis as James and Percy, though he was deemed "too old" for the characters, yet he would have been more suiting than Canadian voice actors as Thomas & Friends is a BRITISH series, not to mention James' voice would also then sound nowhere as feminine. Another is Keith Scott as Diesel 10, which was also deemed too freighting by the test audiences, yet the character is not really less frightening than the former's voice acting either. A third is John Bellis as Thomas, due to his Liverpudlian tones resulting in him sound "too old". So what? Thomas & Friends as I stated is BRITISH, even the Canadian voice actors here are still using British accents. In fact, Britt Allcroft stated about John Bellis, "I have just heard the voice of Thomas. The man is exactly how Thomas would sound!" Plus, the Australian trailer still contains Thomas and Diesel 10's original voices. The former two engines were also to be present at the ending by the wishing well.
Sir Topham Hatt was planned to make a live action appearance as well, although this was also scrapped once no actor who was the correct size was able to be found, although I have seen people portraying him at live events on the internet that are slightly in different sizes, so should a certain specific one be quite that necessary? (At least, they could presumably have gotten an actor with the NEAREST size as possible...)
In addition, Sodor and its vehicles would have been portrayed with a more live-action scenery with CGI vehicles (since that many life-sized prop vehicles might have been too much for the crew; while that could sound slightly lazy, a couple scenes involving them would be too unsafe for life-sized prop vehicles and the people in them anyway, such as one where Boomer and Diesel 10 fell of the bridge into the sludge), for the film in order to fit in with the live-action human cast better, plus Lady with a CGI face for her Magic Railroad and Sodor scenes. In this case there would be no problems with Edward and George having their roles in the film.
There also WOULD be drivers and fireman driving the vehicles as in the TV series, several actually having break-vans included, Thomas working on his branch line, and Henry no longer using Welsh Coal as in The Railway Series. Plus, Bertie would also have a live-action driver for this film in place of a model one.
Adding on to all that, due to the film also being based on Shining Time Station, the title of the film would just be "The Magic Railroad." Lastly, for the end of the film, the adult Lily would say something for a set-up for the sequel; "But there's even more to this story; I will have to save all that for another time."
Now THIS would be the film done far more correctly. It perhaps would have also have even led to the film being successful enough to gain its sequel, as well as having Britt Allcroft remain as CEO of her company.
P.S. Here would have been an interesting plot for the sequel that I came with; it involves P.T. Boomer being join by some new henchmen, along with a couple steam engines which they own. The steam engines are the same model as Lady, yet villainous. Meanwhile, Diesel 10 is angered at George's betrayal, but forgets about it when a newer, smaller villainous diesel (who is partly more intelligent than Splatter and Dodge) arrives on Sodor, and he willingly takes George's spot in Diesel 10's gang. With Boomer and Diesel 10 each on a villainous path once more (though not exactly on the same one, due to Diesel 10 and his gang still, of course, disapproving of steam engines), it is up to the heroes (including George) to use the power of magic and friendship to finish it once and for all.

That's kind of a nitpick, the true downfall of this movie were those test screenings. Doug Lennox turned in a good performance here and it was just left on the cutting room floor.

When I first heard Diesel 10’s original voice by Keith Scott and saw P.T. Boomer in the trailer on DVD before seeing the P.T. Boomer chase video on RUclips when I was little around 8 or 9 I think, I wasn’t at all scared of P.T. Boomer or Keith Scott’s voice for Diesel 10, and now I really wished the director’s cut was released

Apparently Boomer was the original main villain of this movie, while Diesel 10 was the secondary villain. If you ask me, they both should’ve been the main villains, with Lady’s accident being caused by Diesel 10 and Boomer who had made an alliance to destroy Lady, with Boomer bullying Burnett into letting him being Lady’s conductor, just so he could have Diesel 10 crash her.

All these comments saying a leak is gonna hurt the chances of this version of the film from being released are just as immature as I was 10 years ago when I found out about this version and also very unaware on what actual legal action can happen.
1. Sony owns the footage and if they cared about it that much, this would’ve been taken down the day it was uploaded.
2. Film leaks help in a way to make the footage readily available in a better format. If enough support is shown towards this, Sony will want to invest.
3. The worst that happens to this man is a cease and desist letter, no fines, no “fbi,” no lawsuit.
4. Britt isn’t a factor anymore, she has no connection to the series and she’s forced to sit on the sidelines like the rest of us.
5. Doug Lennox, PT Boomer himself wanted to see the footage that he was in but never got to and now he’s dead so fuck off.
6. Peter Fonda and Russell Means never commented about it, but seeing a finished product is what actors love seeing at least once. Stage actors prefer to not see themselves, but televised ones do.

Originally Diesel 10 didn’t know who Lady or Burnet Stone were and same for Lady & Burnet not knowing who Diesel 10 is. Diesel 10 had the intent of making sodor engines miserable. Mr conductor didn’t know Boomer was back in town. PT Boomer originally grabbed onto Thomas cab when Thomas rolled down the mountain and got off while in the magic railroad. What prompted Diesel into chasing Thomas and Lady isn’t clear but he didn’t mind Boomer landing on his roof joining in the chase. Diesel knew the legend of the lost engine, But it’s not clear if he knew Lady was the lost engine. Diesel from the first draft obviously doesn’t like Mr. conductor very much. When Jr landed on Diesel’s roof, annoyed by this, he was just trying to do whatever he could to get Junior off his roof & getting more annoyed that Jr managed to hold on despite Diesel going over 100 MPH.

Okay, I see a lot of comments saying that Boomer is a useless character. I respectfully disagree with that statement. The REAL useless character was Mr. Conductor. Think about it, all he ever did was talk to the audience, talk to a ball and bat and go on a wild goose chase in the woods losing his mind! Alec Baldwin should've only just been the narrator in the movie and NOT a character! Also, it wasn't necessary for Shining Time Station to clash with the Thomas universe, I know Britt Allcroft just wanted to do something creative for a Thomas movie, but this is not the way to do it. I think the subplot with Lily and Burnett would have worked if it didn't involve magic, talking tumbleweeds, sentient rabbits, Mr. Conductor, Stacy Jones, Billy Twofeathers or the entirety of Shining Time Station! I think a story involving the bond of a girl and her grandfather should have been more compelling, especially when the grandpa was grieving the loss of his wife and needed to go through some emotional baggage. And Lady doesn't have to be a magical engine, she could just be an old engine that needs to be restored and with a real-life basis. Sodor should be more real and British with real life humans instead of wooden figures and the engines should NOT drive be themselves. The Thomas Characters from seasons 1-5 should've appeared and cameoed. Sir Topham Hatt should have more involvement in the film instead of being the Phone Guy (FNAF reference LOL), the same goes to Thomas, he's in the title and should have more screentime along with his friends. Lily should be a well written character and have more of a personality instead of asking a dog which train to take which is ridiculous, same goes to Burnett. I think Patch is a decent supporting character, so he's fine. And Boomer should've been more of a better written and compelling character to be THE FIRST human villain in Thomas & Friends universe, the first human to ever wanted to scrap an engine, and most importantly the one who owns and operates Diesel 10. Speaking of Diesel 10, I hate the final cut version of him, it had more to do with magic and Mr. Conductor instead of saying to scrap all the steam engines so diesels can take over. And what's with his voice in the final cut? It's too cartoony and too American for a British built diesel. The original cut with Keith Scott voicing him sounds way better and British. And I also hate the final cut because of Percy and James' voices, they sound too girly! They're guys! What the hell?! And I also hate the trend of Gordon being mean in the movie and the rest of the series! He and Thomas formed an alliance together, "United we stand, together we fall. You help me, and I help you." DOES THAT RING A BELL?! And Henry should NOT use special coal anymore! And the chase that led to the big viaduct seems dangerous in my opinion, it should've led to a smaller bridge that's breaking and needs repairs. I enjoy Junior as a comic relief more than the next guy, but getting himself fling by a windmill is dangerous.

Is this from the exact same workprint I later saw on the Blu-Ray? Because on the Blu-Ray, Thomas's line, "Run, Lady! Quickly! And I'm gonna help you." and Lily's narration's were placeholder recordings by Britt Allcroft, and special effects were not yet added.

On the subject of the film: No directors cut can convince me that this movie wasn't going to be awful to begin with. The writing and focus on pointless humans make this movie feel like less of a film based on Thomas and more of an unrelated steam engine direct to video movie, which isn't inherently a bad idea but the scenes on Sodor just make it feel bloated and inconsistent. The addition of a human villain honestly makes it worse, and cutting out Boomer had virtually no effect on the finished product so I think it was a good thing overall. Some intellectual properties do not deserve film adaptations and Shining Time Station is the perfect example of one. I think a Thomas movie can be done properly with the right people, but as we can see here the deviation from the source material runs rampant and takes away from what could have truly saved the franchise from it's 2004-2013 dork age but it did the exact opposite and I will forever be salty about it.
That being said, I do think it's a bit of a dick move to keep these clips up against the creators wishes. Personal feelings aside, it is a bit disrespectful uploading these. However, I think the overreactions and threats to notify the authorities over a 20 year old children's film that virtually nobody gives a shit about outside of like 12 people is hilarious. One part of me wants these to be taken down but the other part of me can't help but laugh. Is it morally wrong? Yeah. Is it illegal? Probably. Are you going to suffer any real consequences over this? Not a chance. Though I do understand that there is an audience for said director's cut, I don't think a series of unpolished clips would make Mattel not want to release the film in it's proper form and make money off of it, not to mention introduce it to today's children and sell Magic Railroad themed merchandise to a new audience. I think eventually the true version of this film will be released and these floating around on the internet probably won't effect it in any way.
Finally, a long comment not complaining about the Britt Allcroft stuff!

I disagree. Thomas’s world is miles more charming and has more substance than the generic middle of nowhere valley that they made Shining Time Station into within this movie. The plot was confusing start to finish and the human characters were some of the blandest cardboard cutout archetypes they could have used within the movie. It would have been much more easy to sell to a wider audience if they had just made the movie about talking trains doing talking train things but with higher stakes. I don’t mind the live action in this movie, and the CGI is amazingly ahead of its time for something that came out in 2000. If the movie was a CGI/Live Action hybrid (the regular models are fine though) focused on Sodor it would have done great justice towards the brand but they did the exact opposite.
@@miles.1203 In the movie Thomas' world is bland and the characters were slandered into having one note character traits. Plus their side plot isn't that interesting and doesn't have much to it except deisel 10 is causing havoc, which can basically just be it's own episode.
I believe that Shining time is the more interesting of the two, mostly because it has more going on and I think gold dust is a good concept that is developed throughout the film. I also like that it adds more world building and history to the original Shining Time Station.
I agree. The movie was doomed from the start. It had heart, and I give Britt and the cast credit for that. They did a good job, but the plot sucks, and bad guys are boring, P.T. Boomer especially. He is so unimportant to the plot until he attempts to blow up Muffle Mountain, at which point, the kids would have forgotten he was even a part of the movie, his role up until that point being so small and irrelevant.

I am so glad this was cut. I don't know what Nostalgia laced angel dust people are inhaling, but none of this is THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE AND FRIENDS. This overly melodramatic schlock about humans fighting and *destroying the universe* give me a break. Nobody would have ever gone to the theater to want to see that except the weird fans who get off to Thomas being randomly dark and disturbing for no good reason. This is, or was, a series about trains with faces doing yardwork and becoming better people. What the hell were they thinking.

@@j06films33 It's getting released through a 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray and DVD set to be released in September and all the deleted scenes from the original version will be on it. Although, they won't be included as a directors cut, instead, they're gonna be included as bonus features. Regardless, I see this as an absolute win.

@@lbsc1201 If anything, the leak only brought more attention to the fact that there was a ton of cut footage in the film. The studio's attempts to take down all the uploads of the workprint only created a Streisand Effect that brought the deleted footage more into the public eye, and because of that, we're now getting a Blu Ray release with the deleted scenes included on it. I don't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet that if the work phone had never been leaked, the upcoming Blu Ray would have been a standard bare bones release because not enough people would have cared.

Disagree. Because of this, it led to many laziness in this overrated film that led to a poor critical reception and became a box office bomb. Had they include some of his scenes and not focus too much on the humans by adding more characters from Thomas and Friends (including Duck, Edward, and George) by giving the engines some extended screen time, I think it could have ended as a modest success. But nope, it was the test audience’s fault.
