    F14 Back Stories and History.
The 2 seater Grumman F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy's air superiority fighter, tactical reconnaissance platform and its fleet defence interceptor . The F-14 replaced the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1974 and was replaced in 2006 by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. It appears in all Top Gun video games including Top Gun: Guts and Glory, Top Gun: Combat Zones and Top Gun: Hard Lock.
The aircraft first flew as far back as 1970 and deployed from Navy carriers in 1974 and was ultimately cancelled in 2006 with the advent of the U.S. Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet. The F-18 was faster, more maneuverable, and more high-tech than the Tomcat, and emerged as a new generation of carrier-launched fighters.
The F-14s initially designed to counter Russian MIG fighters during the Vietnam War, and were then used against Iraqi planes by the Iranian Air Force during the Iran-Iraq war; they reportedly shot down at least 160 Iraqi aircraft while only 12 to 16 Tomcats were destroyed, according to a 2006 Air & Space Magazine report.
The F-14s are still used by the Iranian Air Force, and some have raised a question as to whether they were retired prematurely by the U.S. Navy. This raises an interesting question regarding technical progress. While there is clearly value in human decision making faculties adding to air attack with two-seater planes using a Naval aviator to support the pilot, the advent of newer sensor technology may have supplanted the need for a second person in the plane.

    Hi Sir, greetings from Argentina.
As a 64 YO guy and former pilot myself, I saw the 1st Top Gun movie and immidiately felt in love with the TomCat; therefore, when I saw your 1st video of this assembly I subscribed wright away and I don´t regret it at all.
I had no idea how much work someone has to put into RC models, specially when I saw you so concirned to all the tiny small details. As a hand worker myself, I appreciate it very much. However, my anxienty grew more and more through every chapter of this series until today when I saw her flying. WHAT A SOUND!!!!!! That blew my mind! With my eyes closed, it felt almost like the real deal.
C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S TO YOU SIR! And also to the man who handled the RC controller. That landing with no flaps and high speed was simply flawless! (I wish most of real pilots with real planes can do the same).
I woulden´t had any problem if the video was 1 hour long, so please: more of that beautiful bird up in the air.
I wish you, your family and friends my best. Keep it coming; we´ll be very greatfull. Cheers from NE Patagonia, Argentina. (a dream place).

I highly appreciate all the hard work going into these RC jets. Espedcially when they look so absolutely realistic, especially in these beautiful photos from 1:23 to 1:32.
During flight, this F-14 Skymaster looked so real, the engine sound, the maneuvers. It takes an excellent RC pilot to bring such an airplane to life.

I worked on them in the Navy, then as a civil service structural mechanic at the Depot in Norfolk, Va.. Those flip up over wing fairings ? I used trim and fit them along with their attach fittings. I also did engine bay doors, which are critical on the F-14, as when they are locked in place they become load bearing structural components. While in the Navy I also worked on all of the hydraulic components that were sent to AIMD (Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Dept.) At NAS Oceana and on the USS Nimitz. I also did a lot of on aircraft for various airframe problems. Very nice model.

Immaculate aircraft, detail and flight! The 2 things I always hope for in a Maiden RC aircraft video is no other aircraft noise or flight on the field which you have aced, and the hope for a close up aerial flight video. A view from the RC pilot POV is okay. RC Flight videos with a drone in chase, or a zoom from the field is an excellent marketing tool. Thank you!

The real F-14 was louder because it was MUCH bigger, of course(!), but the sound of the RC engines doesn't sound that much different from what I remember of the F-14 when I saw it in person at the Dayton Air Show in 1990. They demo'd an F-14B with F110 engines at that airshow that year. They were still calling the F-14A+ but that changed the following year I think. The main reason they changed the designation of the re-engined airframes was because the Navy inventory computers couldn't tell the difference between "A" and "A+" so they were not getting unique parts that the F110 turbofan models needed. The radar and most avionics systems were the same in the B model as the A which was helpful for spares for the radar but other items like the radios and F110-specific gear were upgraded.
I was very impressed by what I saw of the F-14 in 1990. The plane seemed maneuverable for its size and was able to stay in sight of the crowd the entire time it flew. I saw an F-16 display and was less impressed by that demo. It did appear to accelerate and climb faster but it also was out of sight and in the clouds a lot of the time, too!
The Navy planes that flew at that airshows -- the F-14 and Blue Angels Legacy Hornets (A-models) -- flew more impressive demos and at slower speeds. The Angels flew a lot slower at points than that F-16 demo.

What a difference the flaps make on the fantastic landings by this excellent pilot. Seems like there's a noticeable amount of flap failures with these big jets. Doesn't surprise me as the flaps are large areas that stay extended at different positions when deployed, where the other surfaces do not. That's a lot of load for a servo going at these incredible speeds. I know for me, if I had only one flap go down at this speed, the jet would go into rapid roll mode before I would be able to get the flap back up and the plane hopefully back under control. Very dangerous situation. I would design a system where the flaps worked together with two servos. That way, if one servo went out, the other servo could maybe keep the flaps at 15 to 20% for a safer landing. Most people would have a hard time landing this beast with no flaps.

Something to think about with a twin servo setup. Depending on the servo, usually when they fry, they are very stiff and usually stuck. So a possibility in a twin servo setup is the single servo won't be able to overcome the stuck servo.

@@thelightersideofrc I was wondering about that but didn't know if that was be the case. That would make it TOO easy. Someone like you will figure it out, because it needs to be done. If the two servos were mounted side by side, and had one arm with pivot ends connecting them, and there was one rod mounted at the center of the arm like a T going back to the flap control, each servo would contribute X amount of throw back to the flaps in the down direction with full 2 servo force. If one servo locked up, you still would have X/2 distance of flap throw from where the servo locked up, and both flaps would still be acting together with no differential throw. When one servo was out, the good servo may not have enough power to operate the flaps in the down position, but it would allow for at least X/2 throw in the up position if needed. Most likely it wouldn't be needed because if the flaps were being activated in the first place, that would mean the plane was coming in for a landing, so you want the flaps down,

Awesome jet! Well done on that build. Your response to the gear coming down the first time tells the story of just how frustrating it was to get it working well. 😁

Thanks David! We found the stock actuators for the wing sweep were not reliable/strong enough to trust to bring the wings back forward during these flights. They have since been upgraded to more powerful units. Next flights on it should have wings moving.
