@@TommyBoy249r WHAT?
Tony: "Doesn't nominate reeve"
Hadestown: "We'll show you what you're missing" *Proceeds to make a number focused solely on reeve*
That probably was the point
Reeve doesn't deserve a Tony. HE's the weakest part.

I just noticed that at 0:59 Eurydice holds two coins to her eyes. A common greek belief is that you have to put two coins on the eyes of the dead so they can pay for the boat when they get to the underworld. This show man.
I thought it was one coin under the deceased’s tongue?
@@Jo-sv9io i looked a bit into it and both are commonly used! even though the one you said is most likely the original version of the myth lol
I think it was a reference to when Hades gave her the two coins to go to the underworld and she was considering going already, thus her calling out for Orpheus. A sped up version of the musical :)

I love this. Don't get me wrong, it gets me emotional and it's beautiful, but at 2:15 I couldn't stop laughing because reeve is just so TINY compared to him and he gets lifted into the air like he weighs nothing
I just noticed on Thanksgiving how tall that man is. So now I always look for him, it makes me smile
Timothy Hughes is 6’6 and Reeve is only 6’0 he looks so small compared to him lmao
Natalia W and Eva is like 5’3
I saw the show in October and my host is a friend of Reeve's so we got to go backstage to meet with him after the show. I also saw the dancer you're talking about. He's 6'7 and moves beautifully. He almost has to duck to go through the regular doorways and that's why Reeve looks so tiny in comparison. I never seen a man so large who also moves so elegantly.
he likes to feel tall
Does anyone have a good Hadestown slime tutorial that isn’t filmed vertically

Just saw this show 2 weeks ago. I had 4th row seats and was not prepared. This show has changed me. It’s phenomenal and the cast is exceptional. Thank you for this!
I saw this in early June before the Tony's and then in August and feel the same way. I cannot explain the brilliance to people that haven't seen it, but something tells me that you understand.
We saw it last week and I was blown away!!!! Second row...stunning!
@@melissamorris1797 I was in town over the weekend and we went to price tickets at the box office and thought they were too expensive since we had already seen it twice. Glad that you liked it.
Can you guys explain to me what this musical is about? I've just discovered it 😅
@@janakloster9881 It's about a poor woman who falls in love with a slow adult type of musician. She is hungry and needs to sign a deal with the devil to eat. When the musician finds out, he goes down to Hadestown to bring her back. Hades impressed by his character, but not willing to break the rules makes him a deal. He can lead her back to the top the same way he came (over the river Styx and past the dogs that guard Hades. He can never look back to see if she's there, he must trust that she is. If he looks back she stays in Hades. Pardon my Reader's Digest condensed version...
Andre De Sheilds has such an incredible and magnetic stage presence, he’s not the most incredible singer but he is certainly a wonderful storyteller. He is perfect for Hermes.
He's a legend. My mom worked with him on The Cotton Club.
His Hermes and the original Hermes are very different and both very good. I feel like they'd have weekly tea where they talk about their stupid sons
I mean he is over 70 so I think it's okay if his vocal chords are a bit worn out :)
@@dee4844mz i just made ur comment 69 likes i'm so sorry 😭
Honestly I wouldn't consider him a bad singer, that's like comparing Elton John to Johnny Cash, both have wildly different styles and tones, but both are regarded as amazing singers bc their voices fit what they are trying to accomplish musically.
I was so salty when Beetlejuice didn’t get the Tony and I loved the set design it was robbed of that tony but I wanted to see the hype around hadestown so I decided to check it out and MAN OH MAN DID IT DESERVE ITS TONY BECAUSE THIS SHOW LOOKS INCREDIBLE AND NOW I WISH I LIKED THIS SOONER CAUSE I THINK I MISSED A CHANCE TO SEE IT IN MY AREA :(
Yeah i definitely get why everyone was hyping about hadestown now, i still think beetlejuice was the best, but this is really good
I KNOW SAMEEE
Personally I still believe beetlejuice was the clear winner however Hadestown speaks more to the “Tony’s” crowd. I’m not mad at all that Hadestown won but I think beetlejuice should have taken it.
Hands down, the best show I have ever seen. Haven't seen Beetlejuice yet, but honestly hadestown is my new favorite musical
beetlejuice is great, but what Hadestown did with their set is just unreal
when eurydice shouted orpheus' name, a shiver ran through my entire body. i can't believe her talent.

Hadestown blew me away! So glad I saw the original talented cast. Their voices and harmonies and dancing are amazing, I can see why they won for best Set Design. Wanted to see it again during my trip.
M Kim yes!! They used every part of the set (if that makes sense) and the whole stage was used. Nothing was left empty and those little details in the cracks of the walls were beautiful. I wish people would stop underestimating the set because it’s one of the most simplistic but beautiful sets I’ve ever seen
@@dotdot550 I don't think they were underestimating it, their point was that Beetlejuice had better set design.
@Frances Del Rosario They actually have efficiently used the stage. AND THE SWINGING LIGHTS ADDED TO THE DRAMATIC SCENE OF WAIT FOR ME.
I bet they havent seen the whole play.
Forgive my ignorance, but is the original cast gone now? I'm about to buy tickets..
@Frances Del Rosario Thank you!
When this song ended when I saw the show (front row) I couldn't even clap. I was so moved, I was just staring into space trying to comprehend the beauty I had just experienced. Same after "Why we build the wall". I just sat there.
I wish I couldve seen it live but I had the same thing just watching a bootleg on youtube. Just sitting there crying. I love this musical so much
Thank you so much for posting this! I don’t know why CBS removed it from RUclips...
Michael Beaudoin right?! They kept the other performances
Yes! I’ve been looking for this video forever!
anniewigi And the videos are only available in the U.S.
Last time I checked CBS’ 2019 Tonys playlist they had changed a lot of the other performance videos to Private too, I think the only musical performance clip that was still available was Beetlejuice
*all rise for the national anthem*
Can I just praise the camerawork here? The low-angle shot with the swinging lamps was genius.
one word to describe how i felt the whole performance: *goosebumps*
Watching this on TV, I teared up
I love during the final moment, the lower voice underneath Reeve. It sounds so ominous and eerie. It really adds to the aspect of going into hell. I love the little details in this musical, they’re really little but they add so much to the show
Fun fact: My friend just renovated her house, and I walked in and realized her light fixtures were the exact same ones that they use in Hadestown. So I just bust out laughing when I see these lights, and she's all like "???" and I'm wheezing as I tell her that these are the same ones they use in Hadestown. Like, where did she find them? How- Just- What?
So where did she get them from?

This whole cast
the video can't capture how incredibly cool the lights were. as someone who had never looked into hadestown prior to seeing the musical, i was in absolute awe. that's when i knew i loved this musical.
The Fates sounded exactly like the studio recording, amazing! 😲
All my vocal coaches and choir teachers would be delighted with how pronounced the k in coming is. Initial consonants can be a pain in the butt
So I've only heard about Hadestown from a youtuber and a friend who showed me Way down Hadestown. I got more interested in seeing how it was after watching Hamilton on Disney+ so I looked up Hadestown and found this video. This performance single-handedly sold me on the whole musical. I've listened to the full album now and I absolutely love it so much!!!
ANYONE ELSE FREAK OUT AT 4:15 WHEN THAT LIGHT JUST BAAAARELYY MISSED HIM
I’ll just be here rewatching 1:18-1:22
I am a poor Black American man and this was first stage play that changed my perspective on the world for the better. Imagine if we allowed art to do that to every kid in the world.
i had tickets that were cancelled for corona, now i’m rewatching this video to try and compensate 😭😭😭
so nobody is gonna mention that Reeve's also is Dorian Grey in Penny Dreadful?
3:03 that high note is so PERFECT.
High note??
What high note? That is not how falsetto is supposed to sound.
@@ChienaAvtzon that’s because it’s not falsetto. It’s a heady mix. And he’s doing it flawlessly.
@@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913 - Dream on, the guy is tone deaf. It is shocking just how terrible an actor and vocalist Reeve Carney is.

Reeve Carney has such an angelic voice. I watched Hadestown for the first time a few days ago and let me tell you, I cried when I heard his voice. It was like listening to an otherworldly being sing
I am also incredibly new to Hadestown! I just watched and listened to the whole original broadway cast 3 days ago and i was so amazed by Reeve's voice in Chant! This Tony performance of Wait For Me is what got me into the musical too
@@wuttatota148 my pld theater teacher got me into it with this performance too! I had to come back to hear it after watching the musical fully
@@Em_Cee669 Yeah my 2nd time watching this after listening to the whole musical is even better now that i understand the context. I was so baffled that Reeve didn't get nominated for this he really deserves it
2:25
I could listen to Andre De Shields do literally anything.
2:27 why is nobody talking about the guy in the background who sang 'i'm coming'. He absolutely slayed
1:12
We do not deserve this man
No one:
Orpheus: LALALALALALAL LALA LALAA
I really like Euridycie, I sure hope nothing bad happens to her later
So, I just realized...
Orpheus looks behind him at "And I am not alone."
Eurydice's verse in "Doubt Comes In" states "You are not alone."
The attention to detail in Hadestown is both insanely clever and heartbreaking.
Okay. Can we get this on Disney+, Netflix or somewhere? All musical fans are not American you know.
so beautifully haunting, wish they'd broadcast the whole play
A proshot exists. Probably won’t be released until the show’s off Broadway and done touring.
Beetlejuice: get ready for a creepy show
Hadestown: ha ha hold my flower
I still love the one person that goes "WOO!!!" immediately after the performance ends. 10/10
This provided writing inspiration for me
Damn I think this song is going to pull me into this musical
I think that to
that’s what happened to me!!
Thank you so much for uploading this! This musical means so much to me, and I’ve been looking everywhere for the OG video after CBS took it down. A few weeks ago I had a pretty intense anxiety attack and happened to find this video. It felt like the universe was sending me a hug!
I was literally in full-on chills when they started singing. ive never heard it before lol.
That guy is a literal marvel. Seriously. He's so cool. He just reminds me of all the Jazz singers my dad used to listen to. I love Hadestown so much. Eva Noblezada is so beautiful. I would've loved to be there to see this. This is such a beautiful performance. Well done to ALL cast and musicians.
Thank you so much!! I’m not sure why they took down the Hadestown performance but kept all the others
The mics were different in this than when I saw it on Broadway! I could hear Reeve much better live
I guess they had a much fuller chorus? Like they had all the swings and u/s on with the regular workers
"I'm coming wait for me!" 😭😭
Wow. I just started listening to this musical today, only heard a few songs, and I already thinks it's incredible. And this is from the biggest Hamilton fan in the world.
@Gabrielle Nielsen
yeah same here XD i started listening to it yesterday, and omgoodness, it is amazing. i heard a song from it on channel 72 on sirius XM (the song was way down hadestown) I am not as salty that beetlejuice lost to hadestown, cuz this preformence is amazing ngl
Mkay as a Greek/italian this really hits home because these are the stories that my yia yia (grandma) told me. The myth about Orpheus and Eurydice was one of the ones she and my father had told me before we left Greece. This musical really hits home lmao.
Rewatching this for the umpteenth time, I realized just how important the circular stage Hadestown used in the London production (and I guess New York, even though I've never seen it there) is to the show! The sets are designed to fit it, with everything on the edges of the circle facing in to the show, and the choreography that implements the moving and rising parts of the stage, especially in "Wait For Me". It kinda loses something when you don't have the rotating stage for Orpheus to walk on, indicating his arduous journey into Hadestown. Nor do you have the impact of just how important Orpheus is to the workers of Hadestown, inciting them to riot, by not having the very center of the stage to lift him towards the heavens as the music swells into the crescendo of the song, and signals his role as the savior that will spark everyone else into action
Also, I chuckle every time I watch this because I always notice the man standing to the viewer's back left of Orpheus as you can hear/see him singing along with Reeve, and it's so relatable because I would be doing the exact same thing if I were a member of a Broadway musical chorus!
Reeve Carney is too precious for this world
If you watch this with close captions, the start says '[MYSTICAL MUSIC]' which tbf is pretty spot on.
pfft haha thanks i was trying to set the mood
God... even orpheus’s voice is heartbreaking. It adds to the devastation.
I would love to see Aaron Tveit in this role tho
Honestly I don’t think it would fit him
Here is why it's important to respect Reeve Carney:
Is he the weak link of this show? Maybe. But the OBC is STACKED, so being the weak link of a Best Musical is pretty cool.
Furthermore, this man survived Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark. He could have packed it in after that shit show, but he didn't. I would have. I would have moved to a small town in Canada after that debacle.

only thing I could critique about his musical is that orpheus was a brilliant singer and musician, i would've liked to see more hypnotising with the instrument. Orpheus strong point was to be a complete musician, he wans't just a lover, he tried to cheat his way to the underworld, because eurydice dies a human way, beaten bya snake, not because she was hungry. She was her muse, that's why he refused to let her go that easily.
fuck. Reeve Carney is so attractive

This was the first year I watched the Tonys and as soon as Hadestown came up on the screen I lost it because this performance was captivating. 6 months later (and after watching it live in October) I’m still IN LOVE with it and this performance always chills me to the bone.
I'm not sure if Monteverdi and Gluck are crying tears of joy or anguish right now, but I can tell you this is my favorite take on the Orpheus myth. How can you deny those soulful 1930's jazzy blues vibes?
That ending gave me chills. I love how how Hermes was singing with Orpheas softly when he was like I am not alone. And then Hermes comes to stand with next to him in the end.
